Abstract

ObjectiveDepression is highly prevalent yet underdiagnosed and undertreated among patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Collaborative care models have improved depression outcomes in primary care settings, and this study aimed to provide more information on testing such methods in specialty HCV care.MethodsHepatitis C Translating Initiatives for Depression Into Effective Solutions (HEPTIDES) was a randomized controlled trial that tested a collaborative depression care model in HCV clinics at four Veterans Affairs facilities. The HEPTIDES intervention consisted of an offsite depression care team (depression care manager, pharmacist, and psychiatrist) that delivered collaborative care. Participant interview data were collected at baseline and at six months. The outcome was depression severity measured with the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (SCL-20) and reported as treatment response (≥50% decrease in SCL-20 item score), remission (mean SCL-20 item score .5, N=245).ConclusionsDepression collaborative care resulted in modest improvements in HCV patient depression outcomes. Future research should investigate intervention modifications to improve outcomes in specialty HCV clinics.

53. Teaching Algebra Conceptually: Student Achievement

Abstract

This paper reports findings from the second year of a two-year study designed to develop approaches to teaching algebra in years 9 and 10. The aim of the research was to explore and develop teaching approaches to assist students to acquire a conceptual understanding of algebra, and to document the impact of these approaches on student outcomes. Previous work (Linsell, 2009) has detailed the strategies that students use to solve equations but there has been no research to date on teaching approaches that make use of these findings. The two main components of this study were a qualitative description of teaching approaches based on videos, teachers' diaries and meeting notes, and a quantitative analysis of student outcomes based on results from a previously developed assessment tool (Linsell, Savell, Johnston, Bell, McAuslan, & Bell, 2006). Approaches to teaching were not uniform between teachers, but all made extensive use of the diagnostic assessment information and recognised that algebraic thinking pervades the entire mathematics curriculum. Assessment of the students at the end of either one or two year's participation in the study showed significant improvements in algebraic strategies and knowledge compared to baseline, though there was little improvement during the second year. Furthermore, the measures of student outcomes displayed significantly higher values for students in this study compared to year 9 and year 10 students in Secondary Numeracy Project (SNP) schools, which are fairly representative of the population.

54. With Great Challenges Come Great Opportunities: Promising Practices of Texas Community Colleges

Abstract

Enrollment at Texas community colleges has increased substantially in recent years. Texas community colleges have a multitude of diverse missions, from academic degrees to technical certifications, remedial education, recreational self-fulfillment courses, and more. This diversity of student and community needs poses significant challenges to a community college's ability to produce successful outcomes for its students and community. TG's Center for Financial Aid Policy in Community Colleges commissioned a report to examine how high-performing Texas community colleges were meeting those challenges. In this report, a qualitative approach was used to gather descriptive information from three top-performing Texas community colleges: Northwest Vista College, Temple College, and Wharton County Junior College. This report provides a summary of recurring themes discovered among these institutions to help guide community colleges as they formulate future initiatives. (Contains 8 charts.)

55. Learning through an Aboriginal Language: The Impact on Students' English and Aboriginal Language Skills

Abstract

Aboriginal communities across Canada are implementing Aboriginal language programs in their schools. In the present research, we explore the impact of learning through an Aboriginal language on students' English and Aboriginal language skills by contrasting a Mi'kmaq language immersion program with a Mi'kmaq as a second language program. The results revealed that students in the immersion program not only had stronger Mi'kmaq language skills compared to students in the second language program, but students within both programs ultimately had the same level of English. Immersion programs can simultaneously revitalize a threatened language and prepare students for success in mainstream society. (Contains 1 table, 2 figures, and 1 footnote.)

56. How Does Culture Shape Students' Perceptions of Scientists? Cross-National Comparative Study of American and Chinese Elementary Students

Abstract

For decades, researchers have been convinced that one stereotypic image of scientists existed among children worldwide (Chambers, 1983; Chiang & Guo, 1996; Fung, 2002; Maoldomhnaigh & Hunt, 1988; Newton & Newton, 1992, 1998; She, 1998; Song, Pak, & Jang, 1992). This study, however, moves beyond that stereotypic image and examines students' perceptions of scientists. The purpose of this study is to illustrate that students are influenced not only by the personal images they hold of scientists, but also by cultural impressions and the style of the science courses they experience in school. By combining a contemporary perspective and a creative method of analyzing student perceptions, a theoretical understanding of how students interpret scientists and their was developed. Elementary school children (N = 1,350) in the United States and China were enrolled in this study, and drawing exercises were utilized to provide new evidence and a fresh perspective regarding the way students perceive scientists. Based on the findings of this research, more American students included the traditional image of a science laboratory with chemicals in their pictorial depictions of scientists, while Chinese students included robots in their drawings. While students in both countries demonstrated misconceptions about scientists, this study identifies those misconceptions as significantly different, yet inherently related, to students' individual cultures, contrary to previous studies. This study also demonstrates that a child's environment can be influenced by their existing culture, and thus learning, or perceiving the role of scientists, can be directly influenced since each classroom is a culture of its own. Finally, this study demonstrates that a child's sense of who can be a scientist, where scientists work, and what scientists do is influenced by cultural experiences. Today, with fewer students pursuing science careers, these findings are especially noteworthy. (Contains 2 tables and 1 graph.)

This mixed-methods study was designed to determine the impact of attendance in the professional development series of the school leaders' organization for school leaders and leadership capacity in Tennessee public schools. The areas of focus of the study included leadership practices, instructional practices, and school culture as perceived by teachers and principals. In addition, the relationship between frequency of attendance in professional development sessions and student achievement as measured by universal screener data in reading and math, along with end-of-course data in English and math for high schools was examined. Lastly, the study determined the impact in the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years for principals of Tennessee public schools in the areas of enhanced leadership practices, improved instructional practices, and improved school culture as measured by teachers' responses on the Tennessee Education Survey (TES). Statistically significant differences were found in the student achievement in reading universal screening data, math universal screening data, and English end-of-course assessment data; however, there was no statistically significant difference found in math end-of-course assessment data. There was a statistically significant relationship between attendance in the professional development sessions and reading universal screening data and math universal screening data; however, the relationships between attendance in the professional development sessions and English end-of-course assessment data, along with math end-of-course assessment data was not realized. Finally, there were statistically significant differences found in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 TES in the areas of teachers' perceptions of the principals' leadership practices, instructional practices, and school culture. 64. Pre-Service Teachers' Attitudes toward Classroom Management in an Alternative Certification Program.

Abstract

This study investigated whether student teachers' attitudes toward classroom management would develop the same way in alternative certification (AC) teacher education programs as they would in traditional programs. Participants were 2 groups of Canadian student teachers at the end of their first or second year of a 2-year AC program. All participants had completed a baccalaureate degree prior to beginning the AC program. The participants completed the Attitudes and Beliefs in Classroom Control Inventory and a demographic inventory. Data analysis indicated that teachers in the AC program did not follow the same trajectory of classroom management attitudes as teachers in traditional teacher education programs, where attitudes do not generally change over the course of the program. Student teachers at the completion of the AC program had more interventionist attitudes about their roles in their relationships with students than did students who had completed only half of the AC program. There were no significant differences between any of the three age groups of AC preservice teachers. (Contains 59 references.) (SM)

Abstract

I. Rhodium-Catalysed Carbometalation of Ynamides using Organoboron Reagents. As an expansion of existing procedures for the carbometalation of ynamides, it was discovered that [Rh(cod)(MeCN)2]BF4 successfully promotes the carbometalation of ynamides with organoboron reagents. A variety of organoboron reagents were found to be suitable for this reaction, but mostly the use of arylboronic acids was explored. The developed methodology provides β,β-disubstituted enamide products in a regio- and stereocontrolled manner. II. Palladium-Catalysed Hydroacyloxylation of Ynamides. In the presence of palladium(II) acetate, ynamides successfully underwent a hydroacyloxylation reaction with a variety of carboxylic acids. This carboxylic acid addition occurred highly regio- and stereoselectively to provide α-acyloxyenamides. Applications of the α-acyloxyenamide products were also investigated. III. Rhodium-Catalysed [2+2] Cycloaddition of Ynamides with Nitroalkenes. A novel rhodium catalyst system has been developed in order to promote the [2+2] cycloaddition reaction between ynamides and nitroalkenes. The reaction provides cyclobutenamide products and was diastereoselective in favour of the trans cyclobutenamide. Both the ynamide scope and the nitroalkene scope of the reaction have been explored.

74. How Picture Books on the National Science Teacher's Association Recommend List Portray Scientists

Abstract

This study utilized the Draw-A-Scientist Test Checklist (DAST-C) to assess the illustrations of scientists in the most recent three years of NSTA Recommends book lists. A total of 15,778 images were contained in the 148 books from those lists, of which 1,676 were of scientists. ANOVA procedures revealed no significant differences in stereotypical elements across the three years of books. However, three notable stereotypical elements were present in large percentages in books from all years: predominance of male images, non-minority scientists, and scientists who were not youthful.

Abstract

The changing representation of gay politicians in UK newspapers is an area which is underrepresented in political and media studies. It is an important subject because press representation of gay politicians has personal and public consequences; not only can the 'politicians concerned have their political and personal lives negatively affected, democracy can be compromised. Indeed, gay politicians may be less inclined to speak out on gay issues and free expression may be constrained. The thesis demonstrates: 1. How gay MPs in the UK are represented in newspapers 2. How representation has changed 3. An overarching frame of representation. Newspaper articles are analysed and politicians and campaigners interviewed. A literature/historical review contextualises analysis, taking into account socio-political factors. The thesis demonstrates that the press representation of gay politicians is governed by three interconnected frames: 1. The move towards recognition According to the premise of 'recognition,' marginalised groups are entitled to equal rights and respect, rather than a grudging tolerance, alongside recognition of their particularity. This thesis suggests society has moved from intolerance, to tolerance, to partial recognition of homosexuality; this process has been a halting one, although it is generally unidirectional. 2. Acceptability over time (in relation to heterosexual public space) Sexuality/sexual acts can be rated in terms of public acceptability (as in the acceptance of society) and heterosexual public space. Generally, public homosexuality has become more acceptable over the last fifty years (again, this has been a halting process), although still has some way to go to reach full acceptability. 3. Mediated personas as 'constructed reality' Gay politicians are represented in the media through the use of binary themes; using these themes, their personas (gradients of negative and positive) are created by and mediated through newspapers. The third frame helps to maintain negative and stereotypical representations of gay politicians.

80. Including Students Who Are Physically Handicapped with Nonhandicapped Peers through Integration in Non-Academic Activities.

Abstract

This practicum was designed to increase the inclusion of elementary-level students who have physical disabilities with their nondisabled peers in art, recess, and media center activities. Regular education classes were invited to join the art activities in the self-contained class for the students with physical disabilities, and a total of four regular classes participated in at least two sessions. Disabled and nondisabled students were teamed to produce multicultural art projects using ceramic clay. Students from the self-contained classroom also attended lunch at the same time as their same-age peers, went through the lunch line with them, sat at tables with them, and cleaned their tables together. Informal evaluation indicated that regular students began greeting the special education students when they encountered them on campus and the playground. Greetings of special education students to the regular education students were limited. In the beginning, regular education students were reluctant to assist the students with disabilities, but by the end of the classes they were independently working with each other. Teachers made many positive comments about the experience. (Contains 26 references.) (Author/JDD)

Abstract

Huntington's disease (HD), an incurable neurodegenerative disorder, has a complex pathogenesis including protein aggregation and the dysregulation of neuronal transcription and metabolism. Here, we demonstrate that inhibition of sirtuin 2 (SIRT2) achieves neuroprotection in cellular and invertebrate models of HD. Genetic or pharmacologic inhibition of SIRT2 in a striatal neuron model of HD resulted in gene expression changes including significant down-regulation of RNAs responsible for sterol biosynthesis. Whereas mutant huntingtin fragments increased sterols in neuronal cells, SIRT2 inhibition reduced sterol levels via decreased nuclear trafficking of SREBP-2. Importantly, manipulation of sterol biosynthesis at the transcriptional level mimicked SIRT2 inhibition, demonstrating that the metabolic effects of SIRT2 inhibition are sufficient to diminish mutant huntingtin toxicity. These data identify SIRT2 inhibition as a promising avenue for HD therapy and elucidate a unique mechanism of SIRT2-inhibitor-mediated neuroprotection. Furthermore, the ascertainment of SIRT2's role in regulating cellular metabolism demonstrates a central function shared with other sirtuin proteins.

Abstract

Nurses play a major role in the health care delivery system; therefore, education of nurses is critical to successful prevention programs for persons with HIV. Little is known about nurses' knowledge of HIV in India. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a nurse-led train-the-trainer HIV education program on improving the HIV knowledge of nurses. A group of senior nurses (N = 10), were responsible for training a cohort of 10 nurses each, totaling 100 nurses. The 2-day training program included HIV epidemiology and etiology, infection control, psychosocial support, counseling, modes of transmission, natural history of the disease, symptoms of early and late disease, diagnostic testing, and legal and ethical issues. Pre- and posttest scores were calculated using a self-administered structured questionnaire that measured HIV-related knowledge in terms of cognitive and transmission knowledge. Paired t-tests indicated that both measures of HIV knowledge improved significantly from pretest to posttest.

Abstract

The purpose of this article was to investigate the personal and social barriers experienced by methadone maintained clients when seeking treatment for alcohol abuse along with strategies for engaging such clients in treatment programs. A qualitative design using semi-structured focus groups was used to obtain the perspectives of 41 methadone-maintained clients in Los Angeles, California. Sessions were recorded, transcribed, and content-analyzed. Attitudes of health care providers were considered critical factors for engaging clients in treatment programs. Other facilitators included incentives and forms of support (emotional, financial, or material aid), whereas barriers consisted of lack of provider knowledge and insensitivity to acquiring needed resources. Clients also discussed the importance of personal attributes in achieving successful behavioral change, such as personal motivation. The findings suggest that healthcare providers' strategies designed to boost motivation, combined with various types of support, may prove successful in alcohol reduction among methadone-maintained clients.

Abstract

The purpose of this research (N = 160) was to describe and compare substance abuse treatment in two programs under managed care: one residential (RT) and one outpatient (OP). Clients in both settings improved significantly from before to after treatment in relation to substance use and quality of life. However, intensity of treatment (hours of care/week) was much greater in RT and days of sobriety were significantly higher after treatment in RT than in OP (p = .04). Intensity was negatively related to incidents of substance use during treatment (SUdT), which predicted substance use after treatment; SUdT averaged .2 for RT, and 1.6 for OP (p = .0001). Importantly, treatment was completed by 74 patients (over 90%) from RT, with 8 dropping out, and 53 (almost 70%) of those in OP completed treatment while 25 dropped out. Intensity, as seen in the RT program, rather than duration, was more effective in substance use reduction and treatment completion.

Abstract

Potato wart disease is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Synchytrium endobioticum. DNA extraction from compost, purified spores and crude wart tissue derived from tuber galls of infected potatoes often results in low S. endobioticum DNA concentration or highly contaminated with DNA coming from other microorganisms and the potato host. Therefore, Illumina sequencing of these samples generally results in suboptimal recovery of the nuclear genome sequences of S. endobioticum. A hybridization-based target enrichment protocol was developed to strongly enhance the recovery of S. endobioticum DNA while off-target organisms DNA remains uncaptured. The design strategy involved creating a set of 180,000 molecular baits targeting both gene and non-gene regions of S. endobioticum. The baits were applied to whole genome amplified DNA samples of various S. endobioticum pathotypes (races) in compost, from purified spores and crude wart tissue samples. This was followed by Illumina sequencing and bioinformatic analyses. Compared to non-enriched samples, target enriched samples: 1) showed a significant increase in the proportion of sequenced bases mapped to the S. endobioticum nuclear genome, especially for crude wart tissue samples; 2) yielded sequencing data with higher and better nuclear genome coverage; 3) biased genome assembly towards S. endobioticum sequences, yielding smaller assembly sizes but higher representation of putative S. endobioticum contigs; 4) showed an increase in the number of S. endobioticum genes detected in the genome assemblies. Our hybridization-based target enrichment protocol offers a valuable tool for enhancing genome sequencing and NGS-based molecular detection of S. endobioticum, especially in difficult samples. 97. Increasing Teacher Confidence in Teaching and Technology Use through Vicarious Experiences within an Environmental Education Context

Abstract

Providing teacher candidates opportunities to engage in experiences modeling effective technology integration could improve confidence/comfort in using technology and support skill development and transfer. A purposeful sample of 424 candidates in an educational technology course was administered the Technology and Teaching Efficacy Scale to assess efficacy levels in teaching and use of technology. The course employed environmental education (EE) lessons as foundational curriculum. Findings suggest candidates, who participated in an educational technology course that included repeated exposure to experience-based EE lessons, which mimicked vicarious mastery experiences, gained understanding/awareness of practices in teaching, leading to an increased sense of preparedness and teaching self-efficacy.

Abstract

The authors sought to gain insight on how students view group learning and development as part of their business education experience. Specifically, the authors categorize benefits and challenges using S. A. Wheelan's (2005) integrated model of group development. Additionally, they investigate (from the students' perspective) best practices that instructors can implement to improve students' group work experience. As group work is critical in business classrooms, the authors suggest instructors should focus more on the earlier stages of group development by assigning groups based on students' strengths and weaknesses, offering a better introduction to groups, and assigning more group-related time or meetings during class.

Abstract

BackgroundCross-sectional studies support sexual transmission of human T lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-I/II; however, prospective incidence data, particularly for HTLV-II, are limited.MethodsA cohort of 85 HTLV-positive (30 with HTLV-I and 55 with HTLV-II) blood donors and their stable (>or=6 months) heterosexual sex partners were followed biannually over the course of a 10-year period.ResultsFour of 85 initially seronegative sex partners of HTLV-I and -II carriers seroconverted, for an incidence rate (IR) of 0.6 transmissions/100 person-years (py) (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.2-1.6). This includes 2 HTLV-I transmissions/219 py (IR, 0.9 transmissions/100 py [95% CI, 0.1-3.3]) and 2 HTLV-II transmissions/411 py (IR, 0.5 transmissions/100 py [95% CI, 0.06-1.8]), with no significant difference by HTLV type. There were 2 male-to-female (IR, 1.2 transmissions/100 py [95% CI, 0.1-4.3]) and 2 female-to-male (IR, 0.4 transmissions/100 py [95% CI, 0.05-1.6) transmissions. HTLV-I or -II proviral load was 2 log10 lower in newly infected partners than in index positive partners who transmitted HTLV (P=.007).ConclusionsThe incidence of sexual transmission of HTLV-II may be similar to that of HTLV-I, and female-to-male transmission may play a more important role than previously thought. HTLV-I and -II proviral load may be lower in sexually acquired infection, because of a small infectious dose.
