62. Evidence for Conical Magnetic Structure in M-type BaFe12O19 Hexaferrite: A Combined Single-Crystal XMCD and Neutron Diffraction Study

Abstract

The magnetic ground state of BaFe12O19 (BFO) was investigated using X-ray absorption at 1.2 K and 1.5 K, respectively. The XMCD measurements on single-crystals of BFO in grazing incidence geometry reveal the canting of the spins away from the c-axis of the hexagonal unit cell. Single-crystal neutron diffraction studies reveal magnetic satellite peaks along the 00l reciprocal lattice row around the forbidden l = 2n +/- 1 positions confirming conical-type magnetic structure in the ground state of BFO. The observation of the conical magnetic structure of BFO opens the possibility of type-II multiferroicity in undoped BFO also., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

In this paper, our aim is twofold: First, by using the technique of gluing semigroups, we give infinitely many families of a projective closure with the Cohen-Macaulay (Gorenstein) property. Also, we give an effective technique for constructing large families of one dimensional Gorenstein local rings associated to monomial curves, which supports Rossi question, saying that every Gorenstein local ring has a non-decreasing Hilbert function. In the second part, we study strong indispensable minimal free resolutions of semigroup rings, focusing on the operation of the join of affine semigroups, which provide class of examples supporting Charalambous and Thoma question on the class of lattice ideal which has a strong indispensable free resolution., Comment: 12 Pages, comments are welcome

70. Large choroidal melanoma presenting as neovascular glaucoma

Abstract

Choroidal melanoma is a relatively rare tumour with a poor prognosis, though it is the most common primary malignancy of the eye among adults. Choroidal melanoma has been reported to present as acute angle closure glaucoma, secondary glaucoma, chronic uveitis, cataract, and staphyloma. We report a case of a28-year-old male presenting with features of neovascular glaucoma in the right eye and having initially been treated with anti-glaucoma medications. However, ultrasonography revealed a mushroom-shaped, elevated, solid lesion with low to moderate internal reflectivity and regular internal structure suggestive of choroidal melanoma. Histopathological examination along with the immunohistochemistry studies of the lesion following enucleation of the eye confirmed the diagnosis of malignant choroidal melanoma. We highlight with this case that large choroidal melanoma may rarely present with features of neovascular glaucoma. The etiology of neovascular glaucoma should be investigated carefully and a potentially life-threatening intraocular tumour should be excluded, although it is a rare presentation.

85. Bond Premium Cyclicality and Liquidity Traps

Abstract

Safe asset shortages can expose an economy to liquidity traps. The nature of these traps is determined by the cyclicality of the bond premium. A counter-cyclical bond premium opens the possibility of expectations-driven liquidity traps in which small issuances of government debt crowd out private debt and reduce output. In contrast, when the bond premium is pro-cyclical and the economy is in a liquidity trap, government debt is expansionary. In the data, we find evidence of a counter-cyclical bond premium. Large interventions can prevent the emergence of self-fulfilling traps, but they require sufficient fiscal capacity. In a quantitative model calibrated to the Great Recession, a promise to increase the government debt-to-GDP ratio by 20 percentage points precludes the possibility of self-fulfilling traps.
