Sour passion fruit has great relevance for Brazil by its socioeconomic importance. Although it is one of the most important fruit trees in the Brazilian fruit production, its productivity is still very low due to the lack of genotypes that are homogenous, productive, and adapted to the different regions of the country. This denotes the need for advances in genetic improvement of this fruit species. In this context, the objective of this work was to estimate genetic gains in sour passion fruit progenies under intrapopulation recurrent selection, using different restricted selection indexes: Kempthorne & Nordskog, Tallis, and James; and non-restricted selection indexes: Smith, Hazel, and Mulamba & Mock. Thus, 13 agronomic characteristics were evaluated in 118 full-sib families and three controls. The selection indexes used to obtain the genetic gains were Mulamba & Mock, Smith, Hazel, and Kempthorne & Nordskog, with the assignment of random weights. The Tallis index was applied to the restriction for fruit mass, and the restriction of James for productivity gains. The Genes program was used to analyze the selection indexes. The restricted selection indexes of Kempthorne & Nordskog, Tallis, and James are more suitable for the selection of full-sib families of sour passion fruit than the Smith, Hazel, and Mulamba & Mock non-restricted selection indexes, and can be applied in recurrent selection programs. The results indicate that the addition of the restrictions proposed by Tallis and James are not efficient for increasing gains when compared to the Kempthorne & Nordskog, since they obtained similar gains. O maracujazeiro azedo possui grande relevância para o Brasil pela importância socioeconômica. Embora seja uma das fruteiras de maior destaque na produção nacional, a produtividade ainda é muito baixa, pela falta de genótipos homogêneos, produtivos e adaptados as diferentes regiões do país, refletindo a necessidade do avanço com melhoramento genético. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar os ganhos genéticos com índices de seleção restrito diferentes: Kempthorne & Nordskog, Tallis e James e os índices não restritos: Smith, Hazel e Mulamba & Mock em progênies de maracujazeiro azedo sob seleção recorrente intrapopulacional. Desta forma, foram avaliadas 13 características agronômicas em 118 famílias de irmãos completos e três testemunhas. Os índices de seleção empregados para obtenção dos ganhos genéticos foram Mulamba & Mock, Smith, Hazel e Kempthorne & Nordskog com a atribuição de pesos aleatórios. O índice de Tallis foi aplicado a restrição para massa de fruto e o restrito de James para ganhos de produtividade. Para a análise dos índices de seleção foi utilizado o programa Genes. Os índices de seleção restritos de Kempthorne & Nordskog, Tallis e James são mais adequados à seleção de famílias de irmãos completos de maracujazeiro azedo do que os índices de seleção não restritos de Smith, Hazel e Mulamba & Mock, podendo ser aplicados em programas de seleção recorrente. Os resultados indicam que a adição das restrições propostas por Tallis e James não foram eficientes para o aumento de ganho, em comparação com Kempthorne & Nordskog, uma vez que obtiveram ganhos semelhantes.

A novel design based on genetic algorithm is proposed to construct a near-infrared Bragg reflector and an antireflection coating, which are supposed to be applied in the transparent organic photovoltaics. By incorporating the absorbing layer which composed of ClAlPc/C60 with the structure designed, it leads to a significant near-infrared absorption increase from 16.6% to 36.3% within 650-850 nm and high average visible-transparency of 72% within 400-580 nm at normal incidence. Moreover, the near-infrared absorption increases with the enlargement of the incident angle from 0° to 30°, where the average transmittance remains above 60% simultaneously. This design can further improve the balance between transparency in the visible for scenic sight view and sunlight absorption in near-infrared for high-efficiency electricity generation. The potential of adopting this novel design on transparent building-integrated photovoltaic modules, which dominate the landscape of the major cities, is tremendous.

Brazilian breeding programs usually aim at finding genotypes with early cycle and high grain yield. Thus, this study aimed to select early soybean lines with high grain yield for the Cerrado region. The experiment was carried out in the 2017-2018 season, in the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul, Campus Chapadão do Sul, and consisted of an augmented blocks design, using 196 lines and ten controls, with five replications for each control. The experiment evaluated the traits plant height, number of days to flowering, and grain yield. After verifying the genetic variability for all traits, two selection methods were evaluated, the direct selection in each trait and the simultaneous selection (to decrease plant height and number of days to flowering and increase grain yield, using the Mulamba and Mock index). The latter considered two scenarios were when establishing the economic weight: the coefficient of genotypic variation (CVg) and arbitrary weights. Direct selection on the variables had unsatisfactory results. The Mulamba and Mock revealed unsatisfactory results when using CVg as the economic weight and satisfactory results when using arbitrary weights. Los programas de mejoramiento en Brasil generalmente buscan encontrar genotipos de ciclo precoz y alto rendimiento de granos. Por lo tanto, este estudio tuvo como objetivo seleccionar líneas de soja precoces con alto rendimiento de granos para la región de Cerrado. El experimento se llevó a cabo en la temporada 2017-2018, en la Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul, Campus Chapadão do Sul, y consistió en un diseño de bloques aumentados, utilizando 196 líneas y diez controles, con cinco réplicas para cada control. El experimento evaluó los caracteres altura de la planta, número de días para la floración y rendimiento de granos. Después de verificar la variabilidad genética de todos los caracteres, se evaluaron dos métodos de selección, la selección directa en cada carácter y la selección simultánea (para reducir la altura de la planta y número de días para la floración y aumentar el rendimiento de los granos, utilizando el índice de Mulamba y Mock). Estos últimos consideraron dos escenarios a la hora de establecer el peso económico: el coeficiente de variación genotípica (CVg) y los pesos arbitrarios. La selección directa sobre las variables tuvo resultados insatisfactorios. El índice de Mulamba y el Mock revelaron resultados insatisfactorios al utilizar el CVg como peso económico y resultados satisfactorios al utilizar pesos arbitrarios. This study compared four selection indexes and the REML/BLUP methodology in an assessment of predicted genetic gains in the traits of interest. A total of 81 full-sib progenies derived from the third cycle of recurrent selection were assessed for one harvest in one environment. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with five plants per plot. The following traits were assessed: number of fruits, total yield, fruit mass, fruit longitudinal diameter, fruit transverse diameter, fruit pulp percentage, shell thickness and content of soluble solids. The Mulamba & Mock index produced the best results for the selection of progenies. The REML/BLUP method was the most efficient and selected progenies with predicted genetic gains better than the selection indexes tested. RESUMO. Tendo em vista a importância do cultivo do maracujazeiro, é de grande relevância o aprimoramento dos trabalhos de melhoramento genético a fim de possibilitar com maior rapidez o desenvolvimento de novas cultivares. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi comparar quatro índices de seleção e o método REML/BLUP na avaliação de ganhos genéticos preditos das características de interesse. Foram avaliadas 81 progênies de irmãos-completos, oriundas do terceiro ciclo de seleção recorrente, em uma safra, em um ambiente. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso com parcelas constituídas por cinco plantas. As características avaliadas foram: número de frutos, produção total, massa do fruto, diâmetro longitudinal do fruto, diâmetro transversal do fruto, porcentagem de polpa do fruto, espessura da casca e teor de sólidos solúveis totais. O índice de seleção de Mulamba & Mock proporcionou os melhores resultados para a seleção das progênies. O método REML/BLUP mostrou-se mais eficiente, tendo selecionado progênies com ganhos genéticos preditos melhores que os dos índices de seleção testados.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar quatro índices de seleção e o método REML/Blup na avaliação de ganhos genéticos preditos das características de interesse ao programa de melhoramento do milho-pipoca UENF 14. Foram avaliadas 200 progênies de irmãos-completos, em uma safra, em dois ambientes (regiões Norte e Noroeste do Estado do Rio de Janeiro), com duas repetições, o que totalizou 800 observações. Avaliaram-se as características altura média de plantas, altura média de inserção da primeira espiga, estande final, tombamento, diâmetro de colmo, prolificidade, rendimento e capacidade de expansão dos grãos. Entre os índices de seleção testados, o de Mulamba & Mock proporcionou os melhores resultados para a seleção das progênies de irmãos-completos. O método REML/Blup mostrou-se muito eficiente, tendo selecionado progênies com desempenhos relativos elevados e com ganhos genéticos preditos melhores que os dos índices de seleção testados. As progênies selecionadas com uso do método REML/Blup, para maior rendimento de grãos, não são as mesmas selecionadas para maior capacidade de expansão. O índice de Mulamba & Mock e o método REML/Blup proporcionam os melhores ganhos preditos para a população UENF 14. The objective of this work was to compare four selection indices and the REML/Blup method in the evaluation of the predicted genetic gains for the characteristics of interest to the breeding program of the UENF 14 popcorn. Two hundred full-sib progenies were evaluated in one season, in two locations (North and Northwest Regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), with two replicates, totaling 800 observations. The characteristics evaluated were average plant height, average height of first ear insertion, final stand, tipping, stem diameter, prolificacy, grain yield and popping expansion. Among the selection indices tested, Mulamba & Mock's provided the best results for selection of full-sib progenies. The REML/Blup method proved to be very efficient, selecting progenies with high relative performance and better predicted genetic gains than those of the selection indices tested. The progenies selected using the REML/Blup method, for highest grain yield, are not the same as those selected for higher popping expansion. The Mulamba & Mock index and the REML/Blup method provide the best predicted gains for the UENF 14 population.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar indicadores efetivos da arquitetura de plantas em feijoeiro, para subsidiar, ou substituir, a avaliação por notas. Trinta e seis linhagens de feijão foram avaliadas quanto aos principais caracteres relacionados à arquitetura de plantas e a caracteres agronômicos, em duas safras. Os experimentos foram realizados em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, em Coimbra, MG. A análise de trilha indicou que o ângulo de inserção dos ramos, a altura das plantas na colheita e o diâmetro do hipocótilo foram os principais caracteres determinantes da arquitetura de plantas do feijoeiro. O diâmetro do hipocótilo esteve fortemente associado com a nota de arquitetura e possibilitou elevada acurácia e precisão de mensuração. Essa característica é facilmente mensurada e é indicador efetivo da arquitetura de plantas do feijoeiro. The objective of this work was to identify effective indicators of plant architecture in common bean, to subsidize or replace the evaluation by scores. Thirty-six common bean lines were evaluated regarding the main characters related to plant architecture and agronomic traits, in two harvest seasons. The experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates in Coimbra, MG, Brazil. Path analysis showed that the insertion angle of branches, plant height at harvest, and hypocotyl diameter were the main determinants of plant architecture of common bean. Hypocotyl diameter was strongly related to the architecture score, and allowed high accuracy and precision in measurement. This trait is easily measured and is an effective indicator of bean plant architecture.

Field experiments were conducted in 2010 and 2011 to evaluate maize with the objective of determining genetic variation and relationship among yield and yield component traits for simultaneous selection in dry and green maize. Phenotypic variance was mainly accounted for by the genetic component. Heritability was high for flowering, height and ear traits and grain yield. All the traits were positively correlated with grain yield, with the ear traits of kernel rows/cob and kernels/row on cob contributing most to grain yield. The high heritability coupled with the highest genetic advance observed for kernels per row on cob, kernel rows/cob and grain yield at 20% selection intensity indicates that concentrating on these three traits in selection programme will achieve a fast progress in selection. Maize is the principal crop and major staple food in the most countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. However, due to the influence of abiotic and biotic stress factors, maize production faces serious constraints. Among the agro-ecological conditions, the main constraints are: lack and poor distribution of rainfall; low soil fertility; diseases (maize streak virus, downy mildew, leaf blights, rusts, gray leaf spot, stem/cob rots) and pests (borers and storage pests). Among the socio-economic production constraints are: poor economy, serious shortage of trained manpower; insufficient management expertise, lack of use of improved varieties and poor cultivation practices. To develop desirable varieties, and thus consequently alleviate some of these constraints, appropriate breeding approaches and field-based methodologies in selection for multiple stress tolerance, were implemented. These approaches are mainly based on: a) Crossing selected genotypes with more desirable stress tolerant and other agronomic traits; b) Using the disease/pest spreader row method, combined with testing and selection of created progenies under strong to intermediate pressure of drought and low soil fertility in nurseries; and c) Evaluation of the varieties developed in multi-location trials under low and "normal" inputs. These approaches provide testing and selection of large number of progenies, which is required for simultaneous selection for multiple stress tolerance. Data obtained revealed that remarkable improvement of the traits under selection was achieved. Biggest progress was obtained in selection for maize streak virus and downy mildew resistance, flintiness and earliness. In the case of drought stress, statistical analyses revealed significant negative correlation between yield and anthesis-silking interval, and between yield and days to silk, but positive correlation between yield and grain weight per ear.

Na cultura do feijoeiro-comum, a influência ambiental e o comportamento diferencial dos genótipos aos ambientes têm sido relatados para vários caracteres de importância e que não se restringem à produtividade de grãos. A princípio, os produtores almejam cultivares com alta produtividade de grãos, precoces, arquitetura de planta ereta que propicie a colheita mecanizada direta, grãos com padrão comercial, além de serem resistentes às principais doenças. Diferentemente, os demais segmentos da cadeia produtiva anseiam por grãos com outros atributos. Para a indústria é importante que novas cultivares apresentem grãos com alta qualidade tecnológica e de beneficiamento. Para os consumidores, maior qualidade nutricional, culinária e funcional. Desse modo, essas características precisam ser combinadas para atender demandas de toda a cadeia e viabilizar a adoção de uma nova cultivar. E, para isso, os fatores que influenciam a manifestação fenotípica desses caracteres necessitam de mais estudos. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram: i) estudar o efeito da interação de genótipos com ambientes (GxA) para a produtividade de grãos associada aos caracteres agronômicos e de qualidade de grãos e ii) identificar genótipos de feijoeirocomum do grupo carioca que apresentem simultaneamente alta adaptabilidade e estabilidade para esses caracteres. Foram realizados 79 ensaios de Valor de Cultivo e Uso (VCU) com linhagens de feijoeiro-comum com grão carioca, distribuídos no Distrito Federal e nos Estados de Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Pernambuco, Bahia, Alagoas e Sergipe. Esses ensaios foram conduzidos nos anos de 2011, 2012 e 2013, nas épocas de semeadura da seca, inverno e águas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições e parcelas de quatro linhas com quatro metros de comprimento. Os ensaios foram constituídos por 17 genótipos de feijoeiro-comum do tipo de grão carioca: treze linhagens elite e quatro testemunhas (BRS Estilo, Pérola, BRS Sublime e CNFC 10762). Foram avaliados os caracteres agronômicos: produtividade de grãos, arquitetura de planta, tolerância ao acamamento e reação à antracnose, manchaangular, crestamento bacteriano comum e murcha de curtobacterium, além dos caracteres de qualidade de grãos: aspecto visual dos grãos, rendimento de peneira, massa de 100 grãos, tempo de cocção e teor de proteína bruta. Realizaram-se as análises de variância individual e conjunta e, posteriormente, as análises de adaptabilidade e estabilidade, pelo método gráfico de Nunes, para todos os caracteres. O índice de soma de postos foi utilizado para a seleção dos genótipos com fenótipos favoráveis para os caracteres em conjunto, além da adaptabilidade e estabilidade conjunta. Foi detectada grande influência ambiental e interação de GxA na expressão fenotípica para os caracteres agronômicos e de qualidade dos grãos. Foi possível selecionar genótipos com superioridade para cada conjunto de caracteres. O emprego das estimativas de adaptabilidade e estabilidade aliada ao índice de seleção foi útil na avaliação do comportamento dos genótipos frente às variações ambientais. As linhagens CNFC 15033, CNFC 15070, CNFC 15025, CNFC 15049 e CNFC 15086 associaram boas médias fenotípicas, alta adaptabilidade e estabilidade para a maioria dos caracteres agronômicos. Os genótipos que se destacaram para os caracteres de qualidade de grãos foram CNFC 15097, CNFC 15038, CNFC 15025, CNFC 15033 e BRS Estilo. Com base nesses resultados, as linhagens CNFC 15025, CNFC 15033, CNFC 15097 e CNFC 15038 destacaram-se por associar características de interesse agronômico à boa qualidade dos grãos, além de serem adaptadas e estáveis às diferentes regiões de cultivo. Assim, essas linhagens elite tem potencial para serem indicadas como novas cultivares e/ou utilizadas como genitores em programas de melhoramento visando a melhoria desses fenótipos. In the common bean crop, environmental influence and the differential behavior of genotypes to environments they have been reported for various important traits, and not restricted to grain yield. Initially, the producers crave for cultivars with high grain yield, early, maturing, upright plant architecture that is conducive to direct mechanized harvesting, commercial grain size and disease resistant. Unlike, the other segments of the production chain crave for grains with other attributes. For industry it is important that new cultivars present grains with high technology quality and processing and for consumers higher nutritional, cuisine and functional quality. Thus, these characteristics need to be combined to meeting the demands of the entire chain and enable the adoption of a new cultivar. And for this, the factors that influence the phenotypic expression of these traits require more studies. The objetive of this study were i) to study the effect of the genotype x environment interaction (GxE) in the grain yield associated with agronomic and grain quality traits and ii) identify carioca common bean genotypes that have simultaneously high adaptability and stability for these traits. Were conducted 79 trials Cultivation Value and Use (CVU) with carioca common bean lines, distributed in Distrito Federal and States of Goiás, Distrito Federal, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Pernambuco, Bahia, Alagoas and Sergipe. These experiments were conducted in the years 2011, 2012 and 2013, the sowing times of dry, winter and rainy. The experimental design was a randomized block design with three replications and plots of four lines, with 4 m row. The experiments consisted of 17 carioca common bean genotypes: thirteen elite lines and four controls (BRS Estilo, Pérola, BRS Sublime e CNFC 10762). The agronomic traits were evaluated: grain yield, plant architecture, lodging and reaction to anthracnose, angular leaf spot, common bacterial blight and wilt bacterial wilt, in addition to grain quality traits: visual aspect of grain, sieve in yield, 100 100 weight, cooking time and crude protein concentration. Individual and combined analyses of variance were realizedand analysis of adaptability and stability, the Nunes graphical method, for all characters. The index posts sum was used for the selection of genotypes favorable phenotypes for most traits, in addition to adaptability and joint stability. High environmental influence and interaction GxE in phenotypic expression for agronomic traits and traits related to grain quality was detected. It was possible to select genotypes with superiority for each character set. The use of the estimates of adaptability and stability combined with selection index was useful in evaluating genotype performance against the environmental variations. The lines CNFC 15033, CNFC 15070, CNFC 15025, CNFC 15049 and CNFC 15086 combined phenotypic good sized, high adaptability and stability for most agronomic traits. The genotypes who stand out for grain quality characters were CNFC 15097, CNFC 15038, CNFC 15025, CNFC 15033 and BRS Estilo. From these results, CNFC 15025, CNFC 15033, CNFC 15097 and CNFC 15038 line highlighted by to associate traits of agronomic interest the high quality of grain, as well as being stable and adapted to different cropping regions. Thus, these breeding lines have potential to be indicated as new cultivars and/or used as parents in breeding programs aimed at improving these phenotypes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi selecionar cultivares de laranja doce de maturação precoce, adequadas para o mercado de frutas in natura e para o processamento industrial, por meio de índices de desempenho. Índices de desempenho para citros foram estabelecidos com base em dados coletados em experimento conduzido na região sudoeste do Estado de São Paulo, envolvendo 12 cultivares de laranja doce de maturação precoce. Resultados pioneiros foram obtidos na identificação de cultivares superiores. Em comparação com a laranja 'Hamlin', cultivar padrão de maturação precoce, identificaram-se as laranjas 'Valência 2' e 'Salustiana' com potencial para o mercado de frutas in natura, e a laranja 'Westin', para o processamento industrial. The objective of this work was to select adequate early-maturing sweet orange cultivars for the fresh fruit market and for industrial processing using performance indexes. Performance indexes for citrus were established from data collected in an experiment carried out in the southwest region of the state of São Paulo, involving 12 early-maturing sweet orange cultivars. New results were obtained by identifying cultivars with superior characteristics. In a comparison with 'Hamlin' sweet orange, a standard early-maturing cultivar, 'Valência 2' and 'Salustiana' were considered better materials for the fresh fruit market, whereas 'Westin' sweet orange was identified as a superior cultivar for orange juice processing.

We report the one-pot amplification and isolation of a nanomolar receptor in a multibuilding block aqueous dynamic combinatorial library using a polymer-bound template. By appropriate choice of a poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-based support, nonselective ion-exchange type behaviour between the oppositely charged cationic guest and polyanionic hosts was overcome, such that the selective molecular recognition arising in aqueous solution reactions is manifest also in the analogous templated solid phase DCL syntheses. The ability of a polymer bound template to identify and isolate a synthetic receptor via dynamic combinatorial chemistry was not compromised by the large size of the library, consisting of well over 140 theoretical members, demonstrating the practical advantages of a polymer-supported DCL methodology.

No presente estudo, objetivou-se formar supercaracteres para seleção simultânea de variáveis relacionadas à produção e qualidade dos frutos em famílias de irmãos completos e, ou, meios-irmãos de maracujazeiro amarelo (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa). Avaliaram-se 113 famílias e 11 variáveis, no Delineamento I de Comostock e Robinson, em blocos ao acaso com três repetições. A análise de fatores estabeleceu três supercaracteres: tamanho do fruto (TF), produtividade (PROD) e rendimento de indústria (RI). Para grande maioria das variáveis originais, foram verificados sinais de cargas fatoriais que refletem o verdadeiro sentido da seleção em programas de melhoramento de maracujá. Detectou-se variabilidade genética nos níveis hierárquicos de genitor masculino e genitoras femininas dentro de genitor masculino, nos supercaracteres TF, PROD e nas respectivas variáveis originais que os compuseram. O supercaractere RI não apresentou variabilidade em função da não-existência desta nas variáveis que o constituíram. Houve ganhos genéticos preditos, em sentido desejado, nas variáveis formadoras dos supercaracteres tamanho do fruto e produtividade. Portanto, estes podem ser utilizados na seleção simultânea de caracteres relacionados ao tamanho do fruto e à produtividade. This study aimed to establish super-traits for simultaneous selection of variables related to fruit yield and quality in full-sibs and/or half-sib families of yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa). The Design I of Comstock and Robinson was used, in random blocks with three replications, to evaluate 113 families and 11 variables. Three super-traits were determined by factor analysis: fruit size (TF), productivity (PROD) and industry yield (RI). Signals of factorial charge reflected the true sense of selection in passion fruit breeding programs for most original variables. Genetic variability was detected at the hierarchical levels of male parent and female parent within the male parent for the super-traits TF, PROD and for the respective original variables that represented it. There was no variability in super-trait RI since it was absent in the variables that represented it. Genetic gains were obtained in the desired sense in the determinant variables of the super-traits fruit size and productivity. Consequently, these can be employed in the simultaneous selection of traits related to fruit size and productivity.
