Microphone arrays are useful measurement devices for estimating the location and strength of sound sources. Numerous comparative studies have been conducted regarding the performance of acoustic imaging methods in the past, but literature lacks of a systematic investigation on the role of the hardware on the measurements. This research focuses on the performance differences between two 63-microphone arrays: one with digital MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) microphones and the other with analog condenser microphones. Both systems are used on an aeroacoustic experiment performed in an anechoic open-jet wind tunnel featuring two airfoils (NACA 0012 and NACA 0018) equipped with trailing-edge serrations. Whereas both arrays provided similar frequency spectra when analyzing trailing-edge noise emissions (which are in agreement with previous research), the analog array seems to offer source maps of higher quality with a higher dynamic range (lower sidelobe level). Moreover, the results of the digital array featuring trailing-edge serrations show a noise increase at the higher frequencies (4 kHz) with respect to the straight-edge case, which is not expected from the findings of previous experimental research. The results of the analog array do not present such behavior. In this study, we examine the mechanisms leading to 29Si incorporation into highly enriched 28Si films deposited by hyperthermal ion beams at elevated temperatures in the dilute presence of natural abundance silane (SiH4) gas. Enriched 28Si is a critical material in the development of quantum information devices because 28Si is free of nuclear spins that cause decoherence in a quantum system. We deposit epitaxial thin films of 28Si enriched in situ beyond 99.99998 % 28Si onto Si(100) using an ion beam deposition system and seek to develop the ability to systematically vary the enrichment and measure the impact on quantum coherence. We use secondary ion mass spectrometry to measure the residual 29Si isotope fraction in enriched samples deposited from ≈ 250 °C up to 800 °C. The 29Si isotope fraction is found to increase from < 1 × 10−6 at the lower temperatures, up to > 4 × 10−6 at around 800 °C. From these data, we estimate the temperature dependence of the incorporation fraction, s, of SiH4, which increases sharply from about 2.9 × 10−4 at 500 °C to 2.3 × 10−2 at 800 °C. We determine an activation energy of 1.00(8) eV associated with the abrupt increase in incorporation and conclude that below 500 °C, a temperature independent mechanism such as activation from ion collisions with adsorbed SiH4 molecules is the primary incorporation mechanism. Direct incorporation from the adsorbed state is found to be minimal.

Nowadays, aircraft noise is one of the major problems to be dealt with by the aerospace industry and especially suffered by the residents living in the vicinities of airports. The enforcement of noise control environmental laws around airports is hindered due to the large variability observed in the noise levels for flyovers of the same aircraft type. These variations are not properly considered by the current assessment tools, such as the Noise-Power-Distance tables. In this paper, a measurement campaign was performed in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport using a 32 microphone array, where 115 flyovers of landing aircraft were recorded in order to determine these variations for various aircraft types and investigate the causes. It was assumed that the main cause of this variability are the differences in the emitted aircraft noise, since previous experience confirmed that the effect of the variable atmosphere (for the distances considered) is negligible. A strong correlation was found between the noise levels and the fan rotational speed (determined from the spectrograms), with almost 40% of the observed total noise variation explained by the engine settings variation. The use of a microphone array allows for acoustic imaging, thus discerning the noise of the aircraft elements from those of other sound sources. It was shown that for many aircraft types the turbofan engines were the main noise sources. After applying functional beamforming to the acoustic data focusing on the engines location, this correlation is even higher, explaining over 62% of the noise level variability.

Conventional beamforming is a common method to localize sound sources with a microphone array. The method, which is based on the delay-and-sum beamforming, provides an estimate value for the source strength at a given spatial position. It suffers from low spatial resolution at low frequencies, high side lobe levels and requires the user to initialize a two dimensional scan area at a certain distance from the array which can trouble source identification. In this work we use the global optimization method Differential Evolution to efficiently search for source locations. The source locations maximizes the agreement between the modelled signal and measurement. This method also allows for inclusion of more unknowns, such as environmental parameters or a search in three dimensions. Using simulated data, results show that the acoustic source can be identified very accurately with good spatial resolution.
