Abstract

In this work we study rapidly rotating stars by considering the Rastall theory of gravity. We obtain and solve the equations by numerical methods for two usual parametrization of polytropic stars. Then the mass-radius relations, moments of inertia and other results of interest are obtained and compared with the ones for non-rotating stars.

Abstract

In this paper, we deal with the global exact controllability to the trajectories of the Boussinesq system. We consider 2D and 3D smooth bounded domains. The velocity field of the fluid must satisfy a Navier slip-with-friction boundary condition and a Robin boundary condition is imposed to the temperature. We assume that one can act on the velocity and the temperature on an arbitrary small part of the boundary. The proof relies on three main arguments. First, we transform the problem into a distributed controllability problem by using a domain extension procedure. Then, we prove a global approximate controllability result by following the strategy of Coron et al [J. Eur. Math. Soc., 22 (2020), pp. 1625-1673], which deals with the Navier-Stokes equations. This part relies on the controllability of the inviscid Boussinesq system and asymptotic boundary layer expansions. Finally, we conclude with a local controllability result that we establish with the help of a linearization argument and appropriate Carleman estimates., Comment: 48 pages

Abstract

Authentic learning opportunities replicating working environments will enhance learners' employability and intrinsic motivation. Within most undergraduate curricula, opportunities for students to experience hands-on learning opportunities which mimic public health practice are limited. A pilot university cook and eat programme (the Cook School) was developed based upon community cook and eat programmes. The aim was to enable trained undergraduate Nutrition students to facilitate healthy eating activities to their peers, as a voluntary co-curricular activity. Two cook and eat programmes, each of five weeks duration, were offered to undergraduate students (12 participants per programme). Cooking was delivered by trained chefs and the healthy eating components were facilitated by trained undergraduate Nutrition students. Participants did not know beforehand that sessions would include nutrition information & activities in addition to cooking. Facilitators identified 'employability' as a key driver for their participation in this project. Their post-course evaluations suggested that key employability skills like team work, time management, communication and organisation were enhanced by involvement in the Cook School. Participants suggested that attending Cook School improved their knowledge of healthy eating. Whether this translates into improved diets long term is currently unknown. This pilot project offered undergraduate Nutrition students a unique opportunity to gain key employability skills within an authentic learning environment, working in partnership with their peers.

88. Systematics, biogeography and conservation of Bald Uakaris (Cacajao Lesson, 1840)

Abstract

Uakaris, genus Cacajao, possess adaptations to their unripe seed-focused diet and habitat preference for Amazonian flooded forest habitats. These include large procumbent canines (shared by the other 2 Pitheciinae, Chiropotes and Pithecia, large home ranges, and large group sizes). The diversity, evolution and phylogenetics of Pitheciinae are limited to few studies and their geographic distribution to a few records and localities. The overall goal of this study is to investigate the phylogenetic relationship of bald uakaris, genus Cacajao, using molecular data, and to get new information on its genetic diversity and geographic distribution to assess their taxonomic classification. The molecular analysis of the mitochondrial DNA supports the origin of the ancestral of Cacajao in the Western Amazon with the sister genus Chiropotes expanding to the Guiana and Brazilian shields during the Pleistocene. Therefore, the genus Cacajao had its diversification influenced by the formation of the flooded forests of Western Amazon during the process of drainage of the Pebas Lake. The ddRAD analysis supported the reciprocal monophyly of bald uakaris, with all clades including only individuals with exclusive diagnostic characters. Therefore, bald uakaris can be classified as follow: Cacajao calvus (I. Geoffroy, 1847), C. rubicundus (I. Geoffroy and Deville, 1848), C. ucayalii (Thomas, 1928), and C. novaesi (Hershkovitz, 1987). I provide an update of the geographic distribution of each species of bald uakari and how the predicted scenarios of deforestation and climate change can affect the four species by 2050. Cacajao novaesi has the more restricted geographic distribution occurring only between Gregorio and Tarauacá rivers. All other bald uakaris occur in a patchy distribution. The synergistic effects of climate change and deforestation will imply in habitat loss in the future scenarios, and along with hunting of C. ucayalii and C. novaesi, will result in a population decrease. Studies on the feeding ecology in different field sites and the population status for each taxon are the priorities for the research of bald uakaris.
