Abstract: The DUNE IDR describes the proposed physics program and technical designs of the DUNE Far Detector modules in preparation for the full TDR to be published in 2019. It is intended as an intermediate milestone on the path to a full TDR, justifying the technical choices that flow down from the high-level physics goals through requirements at all levels of the Project. These design choices will enable the DUNE experiment to make the ground-breaking discoveries that will help to answer fundamental physics questions. Volume 1 contains an executive summary that describes the general aims of this document. The remainder of this first volume provides a more detailed description of the DUNE physics program that drives the choice of detector technologies. It also includes concise outlines of two overarching systems that have not yet evolved to consortium structures: computing and calibration. Volumes 2 and 3 of this IDR describe, for the single-phase and dual-phase technologies, respectively, each detector module's subsystems, the technical coordination required for its design, construction, installation, and integration, and its organizational structure., Comment: 83 pages, 11 figures

53. COHERENT analysis of neutrino generalized interactions

Abstract: Effective neutrino-quark generalized interactions are entirely determined by Lorentz invariance, so they include all possible four-fermion non derivative Lorentz structures. They contain neutrino-quark non-standard interactions as a subset, but span over a larger set that involves effective scalar, pseudoscalar, axial and tensor operators. Using recent COHERENT data, we derive constraints on the corresponding couplings by considering scalar, vector and tensor quark currents and assuming no lepton flavor dependence. We allow for mixed neutrino-quark Lorentz couplings and consider two types of scenarios in which: (i) one interaction at the nuclear level is present at a time, (ii) two interactions are simultaneously present. For scenarios (i) our findings show that scalar interactions are the most severely constrained, in particular for pseudoscalar-scalar neutrino-quark couplings. In contrast, tensor and non-standard vector interactions still enable for sizable effective parameters. We find as well that an extra vector interaction improves the data fit when compared with the result derived assuming only the standard model contribution. In scenarios (ii) the presence of two interactions relaxes the bounds and opens regions in parameter space that are otherwise closed, with the effect being more pronounced in the scalar-vector and scalar-tensor cases. We point out that barring the vector case, our results represent the most stringent bounds on effective neutrino-quark generalized interactions for mediator masses of order $\sim 1\,$GeV. Abstract: Recent results from the Experiment to Detect the Global Epoch of Reionization Signature (EDGES) show an anomalous spectral feature at redshifts $z\sim 15-20$ in its 21-cm absorption signal. This deviation from cosmological predictions can be understood as a consequence of physics that either lower the hydrogen spin temperature or increases the radiation temperature through the injection of soft photons in the bath. In the latter case, standard model neutrino decays $\nu_i \to \nu_j\,\gamma$ induced by effective magnetic and electric transition moments ($\mu_\text{eff}$) are precluded by the tight astrophysical constraints on $\mu_\text{eff}$. We show that if mirror neutrinos are present in the bath at early times, an analogous mechanism in the mirror sector can lead to a population of mirror photons that are then "processed" into visible photons through resonant conversion, thus accounting for the EDGES signal. We point out that the mechanism can work for mirror neutrinos which are either heavier than or degenerate with the standard model (SM) neutrinos, a scenario naturally realized in mirror twin Higgs models., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

58. Detailed analysis of cystic lesions in patients after open fetal repair and postnatal myelomeningocele closure.

Abstract: Purpose: We sought to evaluate the incidence, natural history, and management of cystic spinal lesions following myelomeningocele/myeloschisis closure. Methods: We performed a single-center retrospective review of all patients who underwent myelomeningocele/myeloschisis closure from 2013 to 2018 with follow-up to 5 years old. Results: We analyzed 100 fetal repairs and 81 postnatal closures from 305 total surgeries. Patients within this cohort systematically underwent serial MRI scans of the lumbar spine and had clinical follow-up until at least 5 years of age. Ninety-three (51.2%) developed radiographic evidence of cystic lesions with 28 (30.1%) requiring surgical intervention. Presence of cysts was higher in fetal repair (67/100, 67%) compared with postnatal (26/81, 32.1%; p < 0.01). Of the 93 patients with radiographic cysts, 28 (30.1%) underwent surgical resection at a median age of 27.6 months old ([Q1, Q3], [13.0, 48.6 months]). Fetal repair patients had a higher rate (26/67, 38.8%) of cysts requiring surgical resection compared with postnatal closure (2/26, 7.7%, p value < 0.01). Pathology demonstrated 18 of resected cysts were dermoid, 8 were epidermoid, and 2 were fibrous tissue. Post-operatively, no patients experienced a worsened ambulation status. Bladder compliance showed a non-significant trend toward improvement. Conclusions: Cystic lesions in myelomeningocele/myeloschisis patients are common findings that result in nerve root tethering. We propose regular screening in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients to circumvent nerve injury. Most cystic lesions do not require surgical resection though fetal repair is associated with a higher incidence of operative cysts. Pharmaceuticals such as antidepressants from wastewater treatment plants have been shown to modify the behavior of non-target aquatic species. We tested over 2000 snails (Physa gyrina) from a creek in Pennsylvania, USA for their righting behavior when exposed to different combinations of temperature (12°, 20°, and 25 °C) and antidepressant (venlafaxine and fluoxetine) concentration for one week or 48 hours. Snails exposed for one week righted significantly faster in warmer temperatures and in almost all concentrations of both antidepressants compared to controls. Snails exposed for 48 hours showed similar responses to warmer temperature as they did when exposed for one week, but only at the highest antidepressant concentrations did they right significantly faster than the controls. Exposure to venlafaxine at low concentration (1.56 µg/L) for 48 hours resulted in significant inhibition of righting, indicative of a non-monotonic dose response. We discuss the possible consequences of increased water temperature combined with antidepressant contamination on snail behavior as well as the possible physiological mechanisms of action explaining non-monotonic dose responses. Abstract: Background: Audio-only (phone) telemental health care can increase access to care, but its lack of nonverbal information may negatively impact care quality as compared to video or in-person visits. The objective of this work was to understand patient and provider attitudes toward phone care via a review of qualitative research. Methods: A qualitative evidence synthesis was conducted of peer-reviewed qualitative research published between 2013 and 2023. Studies were required to include qualitative data regarding patient and/or provider attitudes toward audio-only telemental health care. Results pertinent to phone care were extracted and underwent coding followed by theme identification. Results: We identified 2,065 abstracts and 29 articles were ultimately included in the synthesis; 27 of these studies were conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Five themes described benefits of phone care, nine described drawbacks, and three themes were neutral. Phone care was seen as easy to use, particularly for briefer check-ins or as a back-up option if video calls failed, and some patients preferred the privacy of not being seen. However, the loss of visual information during phone visits was considered particularly challenging in the treatment of more complex or severe patients; providers questioned whether they were able to provide high quality care, and patients reported feeling less supported and understood by their providers. Conclusions: The relative benefits and drawbacks of audio-only telemental health care must be carefully weighed against the options of video or in-person treatment based on patient needs and severity. Abstract: Future dark matter (DM) direct detection searches will be subject to irreducible neutrino backgrounds that will challenge the identification of an actual WIMP signal in experiments without directionality sensitivity. We study the impact of neutrino-quark non-standard interactions (NSI) on this background, assuming the constraints from neutrino oscillations and the recent COHERENT experiment data, which are relevant for NSI mediated by light mediators, $m_{\rm med} \lesssim{\cal O}$(GeV). We calculate the expected number of neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering events in a Xe-based ton-size dark matter detector, including solar neutrino fluxes from the $pp$ chain and CNO cycle as well as sub-GeV atmospheric fluxes and taking into account NSI effects in both propagation and detection. We find that sizable deviations from the standard model expectation are possible, but are more pronounced for flavor-diagonal couplings, in particular for electron neutrinos. Abstract: Accidental matter models are scenarios where the beyond-the-standard model physics preserves all the standard model accidental and approximate symmetries up to a cutoff scale related with lepton number violation. We study such scenarios assuming that the new physics plays an active role in neutrino mass generation, and show that this unavoidably leads to radiatively induced neutrino masses. We systematically classify all possible models and determine their viability by studying electroweak precision data, big bang nucleosynthesis and electroweak perturbativity, finding that the latter places the most stringent constraints on the mass spectra. These results allow the identification of minimal radiative accidental matter models for which perturbativity is lost at high scales. We calculate radiative charged-lepton flavor violating processes in these setups, and show that $\mu\to e \gamma$ has a rate well within MEG sensitivity provided the lepton-number violating scale is at or below $10^6$ GeV, a value (naturally) assured by the radiative suppression mechanism. Sizeable $\tau\to \mu \gamma$ branching fractions within SuperKEKB sensitivity are possible for lower lepton-number breaking scales. 66. Closing in on minimal dark matter and radiative neutrino masses

Abstract: We study one-loop radiative neutrino mass models in which one of the beyond-the-standard model fields is either a hypercharge-zero fermion quintet (minimal dark matter) or a hypercharge-zero scalar septet. By systematically classifying all possible one-loop such models we identify various processes that render the neutral component of these representations (dark matter) cosmologically unstable. Thus, our findings show that these scenarios are in general not reconcilable with dark matter stability unless tiny couplings or additional ad hoc symmetries are assumed, in contrast to minimal dark matter models where stability is entirely due to the standard model gauge symmetry. For some variants based on higher-order loops we find that $\alpha_2$ reaches a Landau pole at rather low scales, a couple orders of magnitude from the characteristic scale of the model itself. Abstract: The ATLAS collaboration (and also CMS) has recently reported an excess over Standard Model expectations for gauge boson pair production in the invariant mass region $1.8-2.2$ TeV. In the light of these results, we argue that such signal might be the first manifestation of the production and further decay of a heavy CP-even Higgs resulting from a type-I Two Higgs Doublet Model. We demonstrate that in the presence of colored vector-like fermions, its gluon fusion production cross-section is strongly enhanced, with the enhancement depending on the color representation of the new fermion states. Our findings show that barring the color triplet case, any QCD "exotic" representation can fit the ATLAS result in fairly large portions of the parameter space. We have found that if the diboson excess is confirmed and this mechanism is indeed responsible for it, then the LHC Run-2 should find: (i) a CP-odd scalar with mass below $\sim 2.3$ TeV, (ii) new colored states with masses below $\sim 2$ TeV, (iii) no statistically significant diboson events in the $W^\pm Z$ channel, (iv) events in the triboson channels $W^\pm W^\mp\,Z$ and $ZZZ$ with invariant mass amounting to the mass of the CP-odd scalar., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Abstract: Hyperreflexia associated with spasticity is a prevalent neurological condition characterized by excessive and exaggerated reflex responses to stimuli. Hyperreflexia can be caused by several diseases including multiple sclerosis, stroke and spinal cord injury (SCI). Although we have previously identified the contribution of the RAC1‐PAK1 pathway underlying spinal hyperreflexia with SCI‐induced spasticity, a feasible druggable target has not been validated. To assess the utility of targeting PAK1 to attenuate H‐reflex hyperexcitability, we administered Romidepsin, a clinically available PAK1 inhibitor, in Thy1‐YFP reporter mice. We performed longitudinal EMG studies with a study design that allowed us to assess pathological H‐reflex changes and drug intervention effects over time, before and after contusive SCI. As expected, our results show a significant loss of rate‐dependent depression – an indication of hyperreflexia and spasticity – 1 month following SCI as compared with baseline, uninjured controls (or before injury). Romidepsin treatment reduced signs of hyperreflexia in comparison with control cohorts and in pre‐ and post‐drug intervention in SCI animals. Neuroanatomical study further confirmed drug response, as romidepsin treatment also reduced the presence of SCI‐induced dendritic spine dysgenesis on α‐motor neurons. Taken together, our findings extend previous work demonstrating the utility of targeting PAK1 activity in SCI‐induced spasticity and support the novel use of romidepsin as an effective tool for managing spasticity. In situations where there are no alternatives, nonhuman primates are used in biomedical research to study disease to develop lifesaving therapies. Captive management and routine healthcare necessitate that animals undergo potentially stressful medical procedures, such as physical examination, drug or fluid administration, blood collection, and other essential health management protocols. Implementing behavioral management strategies including enrichment, social interaction, and cooperative training fosters positive coping with these stressors, empowering them to actively participate in their own care. This can reduce stress and anxiety during required procedures, making medical care more efficient and less invasive, while also allowing veterinarians to perform examinations and administer treatments without compromise to the benefit of overall animal health and welfare, as well as improved clinical outcomes. In this study, we explore the broad impact of behavioral management on the experience of primates undergoing routine veterinary care, emphasizing its contributions in improving animal welfare, scientific rigor, and efficiency in care and monitoring practices. Medical procedures necessary for routine care can induce stress in both the veterinary and human clinical situations. In the research environment, nonhuman primates undergo procedures like physical examination, blood sampling, and intravenous drug or fluid administration either as a part of routine veterinary care or during the modeling of clinical disease and interventions under study. Behavioral management techniques, such as training for cooperation, allow caregivers to train primates to voluntarily engage in various medical procedures. This approach reduces stress and anxiety associated with necessary procedures, thereby enhancing efficiency and minimizing the invasiveness of medical care. Consequently, veterinary evaluation and care can be provided without compromise, resulting in enhanced clinical outcomes and overall better health. In this study, we explored the impact of the behavioral management program implemented at our center on a subset of animals undergoing routine veterinary care, focusing on the overall experience, including animal welfare, scientific rigor, and efficiency in terms of economics and time. We investigated its impact on key factors, such as the total procedure and recovery time, incidence of side effects, and welfare indicators, revealing a significant positive influence on animal care. Furthermore, through case studies, we illustrate how behavioral management facilitates timely medical care and monitoring, effectively mitigating stressors that could otherwise impair health and welfare, enabling the provision of care that would have otherwise been unachievable. A thoughtfully designed primate behavioral management program, integrating cooperation and participation with veterinary care, forms the cornerstone of superior animal welfare, enhanced clinical care, and more accurate scientific outcomes. Abstract: Discrete Abelian symmetries ($\mathbb{Z}_N$) are a common "artifact" of beyond the standard model physics models. They provide different avenues for constructing consistent scenarios for lepton and quark mixing patterns, radiative neutrino mass generation as well as dark matter stabilization. We argue that these symmetries can arise from the spontaneous breaking of the Abelian $U(1)$ factors contained in the global flavor symmetry transformations of the gauge invariant kinetic Lagrangian. This will be the case provided the ultra-violet completion responsible for the Yukawa structure involves scalar fields carrying non-trivial $U(1)$ charges. Guided by minimality criteria, we demonstrate the viability of this approach with two examples: first, we derive the "scotogenic" model Lagrangian, and second, we construct a setup where the spontaneous symmetry breaking pattern leads to a $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry which enables dark matter stability as well as neutrino mass generation at the 2-loop order. Using a diagrammatic approach, we identify two different interesting categories of neutrino mass models: (i) Genuine 2-loop models for which both, tree-level and 1-loop contributions, are guaranteed to be absent. And (ii) finite 2-loop diagrams, which correspond to the 1-loop generation of some particular vertex appearing in a given 1-loop neutrino mass model, thus being effectively 2-loop. 86. Explaining the CMS Higgs flavor violating decay excess

Abstract: Direct searches for lepton flavor violating Higgs boson decays in the $\tau \mu$ channel have been recently reported by the CMS collaboration. The results display a slight excess of signal events with a significance of 2.5$\sigma$, which translates into a branching ratio of about $1$%. By interpreting these findings as a hint for beyond the standard model physics, we show that the Type-III 2HDM is capable of reproducing such signal while at the same time satisfying vacuum stability, perturbativity, electroweak precision data, measured Higgs standard decay modes and low-energy lepton flavor violating constraints. We have found that the allowed signal strength ranges for the $b\bar b$, $WW^*$ and $ZZ^*$ standard channels shrink as soon as BR$(h\to\tau\mu)\sim 1$% is enforced. However, in the presence of new interactions these processes are possible and can affect the resulting $B-L$ asymmetry in an important way. A prominent example is provided by models with spontaneous lepton number violation, where the existence of new dynamical degrees of freedom can play a crucial role. In this context, we provide a model-independent discussion of the effects of right-handed neutrino annihilations. We show that in the weak washout regime, as long as the scattering processes remain slow compared with the Hubble expansion rate throughout the relevant temperature range, the efficiency can be largely enhanced, reaching in some cases maximal values. Moreover, the $B-L$ asymmetry yield turns out to be independent upon initial conditions, in contrast to the "standard" case. Abstract: In terms of its eigenvector decomposition, the neutrino mass matrix (in the basis where the charged lepton mass matrix is diagonal) can be understood as originating from a tribimaximal dominant structure with small deviations, as demanded by data. If neutrino masses originate from at least two different mechanisms, referred to as "hybrid neutrino masses", the experimentally observed structure naturally emerges provided one mechanism accounts for the dominant tribimaximal structure while the other is responsible for the deviations. We demonstrate the feasibility of this picture in a fairly model-independent way by using lepton-number-violating effective operators, whose structure we assume becomes dictated by an underlying $A_4$ flavor symmetry. We show that if a second mechanism is at work, the requirement of generating a reactor angle within its experimental range always fixes the solar and atmospheric angles in agreement with data, in contrast to the case where the deviations are induced by next-to-leading order effective operators. We prove this idea is viable by constructing an $A_4$-based ultraviolet completion, where the dominant tribimaximal structure arises from the type-I seesaw while the subleading contribution is determined by either type-II or type-III seesaw driven by a non-trivial $A_4$ singlet (minimal hybrid model). 90. Scalar triplet flavored leptogenesis: a systematic approach

Abstract: Type-II seesaw is a simple scenario in which Majorana neutrino masses are generated by the exchange of a heavy scalar electroweak triplet. When endowed with additional heavy fields, such as right-handed neutrinos or extra triplets, it also provides a compelling framework for baryogenesis via leptogenesis. We derive in this context the full network of Boltzmann equations for studying leptogenesis in the flavored regime. To this end we determine the relations which hold among the chemical potentials of the various particle species in the thermal bath. This takes into account the SM Yukawa interactions of both leptons and quarks as well as sphaleron processes which, depending on the temperature, may be classified as faster or slower than the Hubble rate. We find that when leptogenesis is enabled by the presence of an extra triplet, lepton flavor effects allow the production of the $B-L$ asymmetry through lepton number conserving CP asymmetries. This scenario becomes dominant as soon as the triplets couple more to leptons than to SM scalar doublets. In this case, the way the $B-L$ asymmetry is created through flavor effects is novel: instead of invoking the effect of $L$-violating inverse decays faster than the Hubble rate, it involves the effect of $L$-violating inverse decays slower than the Hubble rate. We also analyze the more general situation where lepton number violating CP asymmetries are present and actively participate in the generation of the $B-L$ asymmetry, pointing out that as long as $L$-violating triplet decays are still in thermal equilibrium when the triplet gauge scattering processes decouple, flavor effects can be striking, allowing to avoid all washout suppression effects from seesaw interactions. 91. Cloistered Baryogenesis

Abstract: The cosmological matter-antimatter asymmetry can arise from the baryon number conserving CP asymmetry in two body decays of heavy particles, when the two final states carry equal and opposite baryon number, and one couples directly or indirectly to electroweak sphalerons so that its baryon asymmetry gets partly reprocessed into a lepton asymmetry, while the other remains chemically decoupled from the thermal bath with its baryon content frozen. After sphaleron switchoff the decay of the decoupled particles inject in the thermal plasma an unbalanced baryon asymmetry, giving rise to baryogenesis. We highlight the features of this mechanism in a type-I seesaw model extended by adding a new colored scalar coupled to the heavy Majorana neutrinos. 92. An eigenvector based approach to neutrino mixing

Abstract: We propose a model-independent analysis of the neutrino mass matrix through an expansion in terms of the eigenvectors defining the lepton mixing matrix, which we show can be parametrized as small perturbations of the tribimaximal mixing eigenvectors. This approach proves to be powerful and convenient for some aspects of lepton mixing, in particular when studying the sensitivity of the mass matrix elements to departures from their tribimaximal form. In terms of the eigenvector decomposition, the neutrino mass matrix can be understood as originating from a tribimaximal dominant structure with small departures determined by data. By implementing this approach to cases when the neutrino masses originate from different mechanisms, we show that the experimentally observed structure arises very naturally. We thus claim that the observed deviations from the tribimaximal mixing pattern might be interpreted as a possible hint of a ``hybrid'' nature of the neutrino mass matrix., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

93. LSP sneutrino decays into heavy standard model pairs

Abstract: In bilinear R-parity violation (BRpV), in which the superpotential includes a bilinear term between the lepton doublet and the up-type Higgs superfields, a sneutrino LSP can decay into pairs of heavy standard model states: W's, Z's, tops or Higgs bosons. These finals states can dominate over the traditionally considered bottom pair final state. This would lead to unique and novel supersymmetric signals with each supersymmetric event possibly producing two pairs of these heavy standard model fields. We investigate this possibility and find that the branching ratio into heavier states dominates when the bilinear term is much smaller than the sneutrino vacuum expectation value for a given sneutrino flavor. When BRpV is the only source of neutrino masses these decays can only dominate for one of the sneutrino generations. Abstract: When the standard model is extended with right-handed neutrinos the symmetries of the resulting Lagrangian are enlarged with a new global U(1)R Abelian factor. In the context of minimal seesaw models we analyze the implications of a slightly broken U(1)R symmetry on charged lepton flavor violating decays. We find, depending on the R-charge assignments, models where charged lepton flavor violating rates can be within measurable ranges. In particular, we show that in the resulting models due to the structure of the light neutrino mass matrix muon flavor violating decays are entirely determined by neutrino data (up to a normalization factor) and can be sizable in a wide right-handed neutrino mass range., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. We review the mechanism in general type-I, type-II and type-III seesaw models. 98. Leptogenesis in flavor models with type I and II seesaws

Abstract: In type I seesaw models with flavor symmetries accounting for the lepton mixing angles the CP asymmetry in right-handed neutrino decays vanishes in the limit in which the mixing pattern is exact. We study the implications that additional degrees of freedom from type II seesaw may have for leptogenesis in such a limit. We classify in a model independent way the possible realizations of type I and II seesaw schemes, differentiating between classes in which leptogenesis is viable or not. We point out that even with the interplay of type I and II seesaws there are generic classes of minimal models in which the CP asymmetry vanishes. Finally we analyze the generation of the lepton asymmetry by solving the corresponding kinetic equations in the general case of a mild hierarchy between the light right-handed neutrino and the scalar triplet masses.
