Search

At the LHC, the measurement of the W mass with a precision of \cal{O}(10) MeV/c^2 is both mandatory and difficult. In the analysis strategies proposed so far, shortcuts have been made that are justified for proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron, but not for proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The root of the problem lies in the inadequate knowledge of parton density functions of the proton. It is argued that in order to reach a 10 MeV/c^2 precision for the W mass, more precise parton density functions of the proton are needed, and an LHC-specific analysis strategy ought to be pursued. 7 pp. (2019)., Monte Carlo event generators (MCEGs) are the indispensable workhorses of particle physics, bridging the gap between theoretical ideas and first-principles calculations on the one hand, and the complex detector signatures and data of the experimental community on the other hand. All collider physics experiments are dependent on simulated events by MCEG codes such as Herwig, Pythia, Sherpa, POWHEG, and MG5_aMC@NLO to design and tune their detectors and analysis strategies. The development of MCEGs is overwhelmingly driven by a vibrant community of academics at European Universities, who also train the next generations of particle phenomenologists. The new challenges posed by possible future collider-based experiments and the fact that the first analyses at Run II of the LHC are now frequently limited by theory uncertainties urge the community to invest into further theoretical and technical improvements of these essential tools. In this short contribution to the European Strategy Update, we briefly review the state of the art, and the further developments that will be needed to meet the challenges of the next generation.

A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig (version 7.1) is now available. This version introduces a number of improvements, notably: multi-jet merging with the dipole shower at LO and NLO QCD; a new model for soft interactions and diffraction; improvements to mass effects and top decays in the dipole shower, as well as a new tune of the hadronisation parameters., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. W ramach poszukiwań rozszerzonych scenariuszy łamania symetrii elektrosłabej, niniejsza praca doktorska przedstawia rozwój narzędzi fenomenologicznych oraz technik analizy danych doświadczalnych użytych w poszukiwaniu elektrycznie naładowanego bozonu Higgsa w eksperymencie ATLAS. Rozprawa podzielona jest na dwie części. Część pierwsza skupia się˛ na rozwoju narzędzi programistycznych służących do generowania precyzyjnych przewidywań dla procesów zawierających leptony τ w stanie końcowym, włączając sygnał, tło oraz ich interferencje˛ w Modelu Standar- dowym (MS) oraz modelach rozszerzających sektor łamania symetrii elektrosłabej. Przedstawione badania dotyczą˛ rozwoju programu TauSpinner. Jest to narzędzie pozwalające na modyfikowanie modelu fizycznego wygenerowanych próbek Monte Carlo w zakresie dynamiki procesu produkcji, bez konieczności ponownego ich generowania. Proces produkcji i rozpadu leptonu τ jest modyfikowany zgodnie ze zmienionym modelem fizycznym przy użyciu wag. W pracy przedstawiono nową wersję programu TauSpinner pozwalającą na wprowadzanie niestandardowych stanów i sprzężeń oraz badanie ich wpływu na procesy fuzji bozonów wektorowych. Badano również korelacje spinowe pary leptonów τ w procesach zawierających dodatkowo dwa twarde strumienie cząstek w stanie końcowym. Druga część rozprawy opisuje poszukiwania elektrycznie naładowanego bozonu Higgsa rozpadającego się na lepton τ oraz jego neutrino w eksperymencie ATLAS na Wielkim Zderzaczu Hadronów (ang.: LHC). Obserwacja eksperymentalna naładowanych bozonów Higgsa, H+, przewidywanych w wielu modelach rozszerzających sektor Higgsa, byłaby jednoznacznym dowodem fizyki wykraczającej poza MS. Ta część rozprawy poświęcona jest poszukiwaniu H+ w sygnaturach τ+jets i τ+lepton przy użyciu danych eksperymentu ATLAS kolejno z lat 2015-2016 oraz pełnego Run-II (2015-2018). W tej części praca skupia się na technikach analizy wielu zmiennych używanych do finalnej identyfikacji sygnału oraz na opartej na danych metodzie oszacowania tła pochodzącego od strumieni cząstek błędnie identyfikowanych jako hadronowo rozpadające się˛ leptony τ., As part of the search for extended scenarios of electroweak symmetry breaking the thesis presents development of phenomenological tools and analysis techniques used in the search for charged Higgs bosons with the ATLAS experiment. This thesis is divided in two parts. The first part is devoted to development of tools used for high precision pre- dictions for processes containing τ leptons in the final state, including signal, back- ground and their interference in the Standard Model (SM) and Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) electroweak symmetry breaking scenarios. The studies concern de- velopment of the TauSpinner program. TauSpinner is a software for modifying the physics model of Monte Carlo generated samples in case of the changed assump- tions about the event production dynamics without needing to re-generating events. With the help of weights the τ lepton production or decay processes can be modi- fied according to a new physics model. A new version of TauSpinner is presented which includes a mechanism for introducing non-standard states and couplings and studying their effects in vector-boson-fusion processes. Spin correlations of τ lepton pair in processes where final states include also two hard jets were also investigated. The second part of the thesis presents a search for charged Higgs bosons decay- ing to a τ lepton and its neutrino with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The experimental observation of charged Higgs bosons, H+, which are predicted by several models with an extended Higgs sector, would indicate physics beyond the SM. This part of the thesis is dedicated to the search for H+ using τ+jets and τ+lepton topologies in 2015+2016 and full Run-II (2015-2018) AT- LAS data-sets. In this part, focus is on multivariate analysis techniques used for setting up the final signal discriminant and the data-driven technique to estimate backgrounds arising from jets misidentified as hadronically decaying τ leptons., 153

Rozprawa doktorska koncentruje się na opisie rozpadów bozonów pośredniczących, takich jak bozony W i Z z dodatkową emisją pary leptonów w stanie końcowym. Pomimo, iż ten proces stanowi małą poprawkę do obliczeń na poziomie Borna to jest on ważny dla precyzyjnych pomiarów w LHC. W rozprawie został szczegółowo przedstawiony opis algorytmu generatora PHOTOS oraz krótkie opisy algorytmów programów KORALW, SANC oraz TAUOLA. Programy te mogą być stosowane do uzyskania przewidywań dla wspomnianych wyżej procesów. W rozprawie przedstawiono wyniki dla szeregu obserwabli, które są ważne dla badań prowadzonych w eksperymentach LHC i Belle II. Obserwable te zostały użyte do oszacowania systematycznych błędów związanych emisją par leptonów w poszczególnych programach. Dodatkowo stworzono narzędzie do porównywania rozkładów wygenerowanych przez PHOTOS z precyzyjnymi wynikami. Następnie w programie PHOTOS został zaimplementowany i przetestowany precyzyjny element macierzowy odpowiadający za emisję dodatkowej pary leptonów w stanu końcowym dla niespolaryzowanego procesu 2f→Z/γ*→2f. Przewidywania tak udoskonalonego programu PHOTOS dla przekróju czynnego procesów e+e-→Z→e+e-µ+µ- oraz e+e-→Z→ µ+µ -µ+µ doprowadziły do powjększenia przekróju czynnego o 5.4% i o 4.6% odpowiednio, te przekrojw czynne są na poziomie 10-4, jeżeli porównywać z Z→ll. Otrzymane poprawki mają największe znaczenie dla „twardej” części rozkładów dodatkowych par laptonów. W pracy zaproponowano, zaimplementowano w generatorze PHOTOS oraz przetestowano trzy różne przybliżone elementy macierzowe opisujące emisję dodatkowych par leptonów ze stanu końcowego dla procesu 2f→Z/γ*→2f. Pokazano, że numerycznie te trzy elementy macierzowe nie różnią się znacznie od precyzyjnego elementu macierzowego. W pracy pokazano także, iż rozkłady kwadratu masy inwariantnej pary leptonów, wygenerowanych przez PHOTOS używając wprowadzone poprawki, są znacznie bliższe precyzyjnym rozkładom referencyjnym w przypadku emisji najtwardszych dodatkowych par leptonów. Rozbieżności w stosunku do rozkładów referencyjnych dla przypadku mionów została zmniejszona z czynnika 4.2 do 7%, a w przypadku elektronów z czynnika 2.5 do 17%. Opierając się na testowanych przybliżeniach, zaproponowano efektywną faktoryzację elementu macierzowego dla przypadku niespolaryzowanego procesu 2f→Z/γ*→4f. Zaproponowana faktoryzacja rozdziela element macierzowy na poziomie Borna od części, która opisuje emisję dodatkowej pary leptonów w stanie końcowym. Następnie dyskutuje się uogólnienie części opisującej emisję dodatkowej pary leptonów oraz sugeruje się możliwość ją zastosowania do opisu elementu macierzowego niespolaryzowanego procesu 2p→Z/γ*→4f. Proponuje się badanie zastosowania tak otrzymanej faktoryzacji do opisu emisji dodatkowych par leptonów ze stanu końcowego, do procesów innych niż niespolaryzowany proces 2f→Z/γ*→2f., The thesis presents results for final state emissions of additional leptonic pairs in decays of heavy intermediate states such as Z and W boson. This process constitutes small correction. Presentations of PHOTOS algorithm and short presentations of KORALW, SANC, TAUOLA algorithms are given. Numerical distributions of relevance for LHC and Belle II observables are shown. They are used in discussions of systematic errors in the predictions of pair emissions as implemented in the programs. Testing framework is developed allowing comparison of spectra by PHOTOS with an exact one solutions. Exact matrix element of extra pair emission from the final state of 2f→Z/γ*→2f spin summated process has been installed into PHOTOS and tested. Improved PHOTOS prediction for e+e-→Z→ e+e-µ+µ- and e+e-→Z→ µ+µ -µ+µ- is higher by respectively 5.4% and 4.6% of their contributions, these contributions are at the level of 10-4 if calculated with respect to the Z→ll. This improvement is localized mostly in the hard part of the additional lepton pair spectrum. Three approximated matrix elements of extra pair emission from the final state of 2f→Z/γ*→2f process has been proposed for PHOTOS and has been tested. Numerically these matrix elements are as good as exact one. An improvement in PHOTOS generated spectrum of invariant mass squared of muon pair is reduction of discrepancy (from factor of 4.2 to 7%) with reference spectrum for the hardest extra pair emissions. An improvement in PHOTOS generated spectrum of invariant mass squared of electron pair is reduction of discrepancy (from factor of 2.5 to 17%) with reference spectrum for the hardest extra pair emissions. Basing on a tested approximation, an effective factorization of matrix element of 2f→Z/γ*→4f spin summated process is proposed to separate Born level matrix element from the factorized part describing extra pair emission from the final state. Generalization of this factorized part is discussed. Applicability of effective factorization to the matrix element of 2p→Z/γ*→4f spin summated process is suggested. Future research in order to verify applicability of obtained factorized part describing final state extra pair emission to other than 2f→Z/γ*→2f spin summated processes is suggested., 144
