59. Alterations in lipid metabolism induced by recombinant bovine tumor necrosis factor-alpha administration to dairy heifers

Abstract

Endotoxin induces marked changes in lipid metabolism via its effects on cytokines. To evaluate the role of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) in mediating changes of lipid metabolism in ruminants, we performed a crossover saline-controlled study in Holstein heifers (n = 8; 394.0 kg average BW), investigating the metabolic effects of a single intravenous administration of recombinant bovine TNF (rbTNF, 5.0 [micro]g/kg). Blood samples were taken from a jugular vein at 0 (1100, just before injection), 0.5, 6, 12, and 24 h after each treatment. Dry matter intake in the heifers was not affected by single administration of the rbTNF. The rbTNF produced early as well as later hypertriglyceridemia (P < 0.05) in dairy heifers. The rbTNF also induced an early and sustained rise (P < 0.05) in the plasma NEFA concentration. Plasma retinol concentration was decreased (P < 0.05) at 24 h after rbTNF injection, whereas the [alpha]-tocopherol concentration was not significantly affected by rbTNF treatment. At 0.5 and 24 h, there was an increase (P < 0.05) in the plasma concentration of the very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) fraction in rbTNF-treated heifers. Between 6 and 24 h after rbTNF treatment, concentration of the low-density lipoprotein fraction declined (P < 0.05) but the high-density lipoprotein fraction was not altered in the rbTNF-treated heifers. These results indicate that TNF produces a hypertriglyceridemic response associated with an increase of the VLDL fraction and a disturbance of retinol metabolism in dairy heifers. Abstract

In this paper, we report the measurement relative to the production of forward neutrons in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV obtained using the LHCf Arm2 detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The results for the inclusive differential production cross section are presented as a function of energy in three different pseudorapidity regions: η > 10.76, 8.99 < η < 9.22 and 8.81 < η < 8.99. The analysis was performed using a data set acquired in June 2015 that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.194 nb−1. The measurements were compared with the predictions of several hadronic interaction models used to simulate air showers generated by Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays. None of these generators showed good agreement with the data for all pseudorapidity intervals. For η > 10.76, no model is able to reproduce the observed peak structure at around 5 TeV and all models underestimate the total production cross section: among them, QGSJET II-04 shows the smallest deficit with respect to data for the whole energy range. For 8.99 < η < 9.22 and 8.81 < η < 8.99, the models having the best overall agreement with data are SIBYLL 2.3 and EPOS-LHC, respectively: in particular, in both regions SIBYLL 2.3 is able to reproduce the observed peak structure at around 1.5–2.5 TeV.

In this paper, we report the production cross-section of forward photons in the pseudorapidity regions of η>10.94 and 8.99>η>8.81, measured by the LHCf experiment with proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV. The results from the analysis of 0.191nb−1 of data obtained in June 2015 are compared to the predictions of several hadronic interaction models that are used in air-shower simulations for ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. Although none of the models agree perfectly with the data, EPOS-LHC shows the best agreement with the experimental data among the models.

Abstract

The optical pick-up for DVD with CD (Compact Disc) compatibility is discussed. The difference of the substrate thickness between DVD and CD causes the different spherical aberration and prevents the laser beam from being focused into a diffraction limit spot size with only one objective lens. Several methods of reducing this aberration and possessing the compatibility with CD are proposed. The twin lens type optical pick-up is one solution of overcoming this problem. It incorporates objective lenses for both DVD and CD. Each lens results in an optimum focused spot without the extra spherical aberration for each type of disc.

Abstract

The seismic fragility of an embankment can be calculated considering the permanent seismic displacement obtained through the Newmark's sliding block analysis implemented using a Monte Carlo simulation with various soil and tensile strengths of the reinforcement. The above method is exact and precise; however, it has high calculation cost and is inefficient in practical tasks. This paper proposes a practical and straightforward method to estimate the seismic fragility of unreinforced and reinforced embankments subjected to earthquakes for practical seismic risk assessment. First, a strong seismic motions database adjusted by the Arias Intensity was created to calculate the seismic fragility of embankments. Then, the analytical models were implemented as unreinforced and reinforced embankment models with different embankment heights defined according to the railway design standard in Japan. The sensitivity analysis of the seismic fragility estimation of unreinforced and reinforced embankments was conducted with various embankment heights, average values of friction angle of the backfill soil, and tensile strength of the primary reinforcement. A practical and straightforward fragility curve estimation equation, with design parameters commonly used to check the embankment stability, is proposed for practical use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider forward experiment is ready to take data in the RHIC Run2017 √s = 510 GeV p-p collisions using the LHCf Arm1 detector. New accelerator data are valuable to verify the Feynman scaling of FX1 production and to study the evolution of the break of scaling in neutron production. Using the transversely polarized proton beam, asymmetric production of forward neutrons is precisely measured. That is useful to understand the fundamental meson exchange in the proton-proton collisions.
