In November 2022, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) returned deep near-infrared images of Abell 2744 -- a powerful lensing cluster capable of magnifying distant, incipient galaxies beyond it. Together with the existing Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, this publicly available dataset opens a fundamentally new discovery space to understand the remaining mysteries of the formation and evolution of galaxies across cosmic time. In this work, we detect and measure some 60,000 objects across the 49 arcmin$^2$ JWST footprint down to a $5\,\sigma$ limiting magnitude of $\sim$30 mag in 0.32" apertures. Photometry is performed using circular apertures on images matched to the point spread function of the reddest NIRCam broad band, F444W, and cleaned of bright cluster galaxies and the related intra-cluster light. To give an impression of the photometric performance, we measure photometric redshifts and achieve a $\sigma_{\rm NMAD}\approx0.03$ based on known, but relatively small, spectroscopic samples. With this paper, we publicly release our HST and JWST PSF-matched photometric catalog with optimally assigned aperture sizes for easy use, along with single aperture catalogs, photometric redshifts, rest-frame colors, and individual magnification estimates. We present a joint analysis of the galaxy S04590 at $z=8.496$ based on NIRSpec, NIRCam, and NIRISS observations obtained through as part of Early Release Observations programme of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the far-infrared [CII]-$158\mu$m emission line detected by dedicated Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations. We determine the physical properties of S04590 from modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and through the redshifted optical nebular emission lines detected with JWST/NIRSpec. The best-fit SED model reveals a low-mass ($M_\star = 10^{7.2}-10^{8}\,M_{\odot}$) galaxy with a low oxygen abundance of $12+\log{\rm (O/H)} = 7.16^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$ derived from the strong nebular and auroral emission lines. Assuming that [CII] effectively traces the interstellar medium (ISM), we estimate the total gas mass of the galaxy to be $M_{\rm gas} = (8.0\pm 4.0)\times 10^{8}\,M_\odot$ based on the luminosity and spatial extent of [CII]. This yields an exceptionally high gas fraction, $f_{\rm gas} = M_{\rm gas}/(M_{\rm gas} + M_\star) \gtrsim 90\%$, though still consistent within the range expected for its low metallicity. We further derive the metal mass of the galaxy based on the gas mass and gas-phase metallicity, which we find to be consistent with the expected metal production from Type II supernovae. Finally, we make the first constraints on the dust-to-gas (DTG) and dust-to-metals (DTM) ratios of galaxies in the epoch of reionization at $z\gtrsim 6$, showing overall low mass ratios of logDGT $<-3.8$ and logDTM $<-0.5$, though consistent with local scaling relations and in particular the local metal-poor galaxy I Zwicky 18. In this paper we describe the survey design for the Ultradeep NIRSpec and NIRCam ObserVations before the Epoch of Reionization (UNCOVER) Cycle 1 \JWST Treasury program, which executed its early imaging component in November 2022. The UNCOVER survey includes ultradeep ($\sim29-30\mathrm{AB}$) imaging of $\sim$45 arcmin$^2$ on and around the well-studied Abell 2744 galaxy cluster at $z=0.308$ and will follow-up ${\sim}500$ galaxies with extremely deep low-resolution spectroscopy with the NIRSpec/PRISM during the summer of 2023, with repeat visits in summer 2024. We describe the science goals, survey design, target selection, and planned data releases. We also present and characterize the depths of the first NIRCam imaging mosaic, highlighting previously unparalleled resolved and ultradeep 2-4 micron imaging of known objects in the field. The UNCOVER primary NIRCam mosaic spans 28.8 arcmin$^2$ in seven filters (F115W, F150W, F200W, F277W, F356W, F410M, F444W) and 16.8 arcmin$^2$ in our NIRISS parallel (F115W, F150W, F200W, F356W, and F444W). Laboratory experiments were conducted to study particle migration and flow properties of non- Brownian, non-colloidal suspensions ranging from 10% to 40% particle volume fraction in a pressure-driven flow over and through a porous structure at low Reynolds number. Particle concentration maps, velocity maps and corresponding profiles were acquired using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique. The model porous medium consists of square arrays of circular rods oriented across the flow in a rectangular microchannel. It was observed that the square arrays of the circular rods modify the velocity profiles and result in heterogeneous concentration fields for various suspensions. As the bulk particle volume fraction of the suspension increases, particles tend to concentrate in the free channel relative to the porous medium while the centerline velocity profile along the lateral direction becomes increasingly blunted. Within the porous structure, concentrated suspensions exhibit smaller periodic axial velocity variations due to the geometry compared to semi-dilute suspensions (bulk volume fraction ranges from 10% to 20%) and show periodic concentration variations, where average particle concentration is slightly greater between the rods than on top of the rods. For concentrated systems, high particle concentration pathways aligned with the flow direction are observed in regions that correspond to gaps between rods within the porous medium., Comment: 36 pages, 11 Figures

The connection between the escape fraction of ionizing radiation ($f_{esc}$) and the properties of galaxies, such as stellar mass (M*), age, star-formation rate (SFR), and dust content, are key inputs for reionization models, but many of these relationships remain untested at high redshift. We present an analysis of a sample of 96 z~3 galaxies from the Keck Lyman Continuum Spectroscopic Survey (KLCS). These galaxies have both sensitive Keck/LRIS spectroscopic measurements of the Lyman continuum (LyC) region, and multi-band photometry that places constraints on stellar population parameters. We construct composite spectra from subsamples binned as a function of galaxy property and quantify the ionizing-photon escape for each composite. We find a significant anti-correlation between $f_{esc}$ and M*, consistent with predictions from cosmological zoom-in simulations. We also find significant anti-correlation between $f_{esc}$ and E(B-V), encoding the underlying physics of LyC escape in our sample. We also find no significant correlation between $f_{esc}$ and either stellar age or specific SFR (=SFR/M*), challenging interpretations that synchronize recent star formation and favorable conditions for ionizing escape. The galaxy properties now shown to correlate with $f_{esc}$ in the KLCS are Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width, UV Luminosity, M*, SFR, and E(B-V), but not age or sSFR. To date, this is the most comprehensive analysis of galaxy properties and LyC escape at high redshift, and will be used to guide future models and observations of the reionization epoch., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The $\rm{H}\alpha$-to-UV luminosity ratio ($L(\rm H\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$) is often used to probe SFHs of star-forming galaxies and it is important to validate it against other proxies for burstiness. To address this issue, we present a statistical analysis of the resolved distribution of $\Sigma_{\rm{SFR}}$ as well as stellar age and their correlations with the globally measured $L(\rm H\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$ for a sample of 310 star-forming galaxies in two redshift bins of $1.37 < z < 1.70$ and $ 2.09 < z < 2.61$ observed by the MOSDEF survey. We use the multi-waveband CANDELS/3D-HST imaging of MOSDEF galaxies to construct $\Sigma_{\rm{SFR}}$ and stellar age maps. We analyze the composite rest-frame far-UV spectra of a subsample of MOSDEF targets obtained by the Keck/LRIS, which includes 124 star-forming galaxies (MOSDEF-LRIS) at redshifts $1.4 < z < 2.6$, to examine the average stellar population properties, and the strength of age-sensitive FUV spectral features in bins of $L(\rm H\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$. Our results show no significant evidence that individual galaxies with higher $L(\rm H\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$ are undergoing a burst of star formation based on the resolved distribution of $\Sigma_{\rm{SFR}}$ of individual star-forming galaxies. We segregate the sample into subsets with low and high $L(\rm H\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$. The high-$L(\rm H\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$ subset exhibits, on average, an age of $\log[\rm{Age/yr}]$ = 8.0, compared to $\log[\rm{Age/yr}]$ = 8.4 for the low-$L(\rm H\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$ galaxies, though the difference in age is significant at only the $2\sigma$ level. We define a new morphology metric called "patchiness" ($P$) that is sensitive to deviations from the average of a resolved distribution, does not require the galaxy center to be defined, and can be used on the spatially-resolved distribution of any galaxy property. While the patchiness metric has a broad range of applications, we demonstrate its utility by investigating the distribution of dust in the interstellar medium of 310 star-forming galaxies at spectroscopic redshifts $1.36

We present ultra-deep Keck/MOSFIRE rest-optical spectra of two star-forming galaxies at z=2.18 in the COSMOS field with bright emission lines, representing more than 20~hours of total integration. The fidelity of these spectra enabled the detection of more than 20 unique emission lines for each galaxy, including the first detection of the auroral [O II]$\lambda\lambda$7322,7332 lines at high redshift. We use these measurements to calculate the electron temperature in the low-ionization O$^+$ zone of the ionized ISM and derive abundance ratios of O/H, N/H, and N/O using the direct method. The N/O and $\alpha$/Fe abundance patterns of these galaxies are consistent with rapid formation timescales and ongoing strong starbursts, in accord with their high specific star-formation rates. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using auroral [O II] measurements for accurate metallicity studies at high redshift in a higher metallicity regime previously unexplored with the direct method in distant galaxies. These results also highlight the difficulty in obtaining the measurements required for direct-method metallicities from the ground. We emphasize the advantages that the JWST/NIRSpec instrument will bring to high-redshift metallicity studies, where the combination of increased sensitivity and uninterrupted wavelength coverage will yield more than an order of magnitude increase in efficiency for multiplexed auroral-line surveys relative to current ground-based facilities. We analyze the completeness of the MOSDEF survey, in which z ~ 2 galaxies were selected for rest-optical spectroscopy from well-studied HST extragalactic legacy fields down to a fixed rest-optical magnitude limit (H_AB = 24.5). The subset of z ~ 2 MOSDEF galaxies with high signal-to-noise (S/N) emission-line detections analyzed in previous work represents a small minority (<10%) of possible z ~ 2 MOSDEF targets. It is therefore crucial to understand how representative this high S/N subsample is, while also more fully exploiting the MOSDEF spectroscopic sample. Using spectral-energy-distribution (SED) models and rest-optical spectral stacking, we compare the MOSDEF z ~ 2 high S/N subsample with the full MOSDEF sample of z ~ 2 star-forming galaxies with redshifts, the latter representing an increase in sample size of more than a factor of three. We find that both samples have similar emission-line properties, in particular in terms of the magnitude of the offset from the local star-forming sequence on the [N II] BPT diagram. There are small differences in median host galaxy properties, including the stellar mass (M_*), star-formation rate (SFR) and specific SFR (sSFR), and UVJ colors; however, these offsets are minor considering the wide spread of the distributions. Using SED modeling, we also demonstrate that the sample of z ~ 2 star-forming galaxies observed by the MOSDEF survey is representative of the parent catalog of available such targets. We conclude that previous MOSDEF results on the evolution of star-forming galaxy emission-line properties were unbiased relative to the parent z ~ 2 galaxy population., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

We present a detailed study of a galaxy merger taking place at $z=1.89$ in the GOODS-S field. Here we analyze Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopic observations from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey along with multi-wavelength photometry assembled by the 3D-HST survey. The combined dataset is modeled to infer the past star-formation histories (SFHs) of both merging galaxies. They are found to be massive, with log$_{10}(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}) > 11$, with a close mass ratio satisfying the typical major-merger definition. Additionally, in the context of delayed-$\tau$ models, GOODS-S 43114 and GOODS-S 43683 have similar SFHs and low star-formation rates (log$_{10}$(SFR(SED)/$M_{\odot}/\rm{yr}^{-1}$) $<$ 1.0) compared to their past averages. The best-fit model SEDs show elevated H$\delta_{\rm{A}}$ values for both galaxies, indicating that their stellar spectra are dominated by A-type stars, and that star formation peaked $\sim0.5-1$ Gyr ago and has recently declined. Additionally, based on SED fitting both merging galaxies turned on and shut off star formation within a few hundred Myr of each other, suggesting that their bursts of star formation may be linked. Combining the SFHs and H$\delta_{\rm{A}}$ results with recent galaxy merger simulations, we infer that these galaxies have recently completed their first pericentric passage and are moving apart. Finally, the relatively low second velocity moment of GOODS-S 43114 given its stellar mass, suggests a disk-like structure. However, including the geometry of the galaxy in the modeling does not completely resolve the discrepancy between the dynamical and stellar masses. We aim to quantify the relation between the dust-to-gas mass ratio (DTG) and gas-phase metallicity of $z=$2.1-2.5 luminous galaxies and contrast this high-redshift relation against analogous constraints at z$=$0. We present a sample of ten star-forming main-sequence galaxies in the redshift range $2.1

We present observations of CO(3-2) in 13 main-sequence $z=2.0-2.5$ star-forming galaxies at $\log(M_*/M_{\odot})=10.2-10.6$ that span a wide range in metallicity (O/H) based on rest-optical spectroscopy. We find that CO(3-2)/SFR decreases with decreasing metallicity, implying that the CO luminosity per unit gas mass is lower in low-metallicity galaxies at $z\sim2$. We constrain the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_{\text{CO}}$) and find that $\alpha_{\text{CO}}$ inversely correlates with metallicity at $z\sim2$. We derive molecular gas masses ($M_{\text{mol}}$) and characterize the relations among $M_*$, SFR, $M_{\text{mol}}$, and metallicity. At $z\sim2$, $M_{\text{mol}}$ increases and molecular gas fraction ($M_{\text{mol}}$/$M_*$) decrease with increasing $M_*$, with a significant secondary dependence on SFR. Galaxies at $z\sim2$ lie on a near-linear molecular KS law that is well-described by a constant depletion time of 700 Myr. We find that the scatter about the mean SFR-$M_*$, O/H-$M_*$, and $M_{\text{mol}}$-$M_*$ relations is correlated such that, at fixed $M_*$, $z\sim2$ galaxies with larger $M_{\text{mol}}$ have higher SFR and lower O/H. We thus confirm the existence of a fundamental metallicity relation at $z\sim2$ where O/H is inversely correlated with both SFR and $M_{\text{mol}}$ at fixed $M_*$. These results suggest that the scatter of the $z\sim2$ star-forming main sequence, mass-metallicity relation, and $M_{\text{mol}}$-$M_*$ relation are primarily driven by stochastic variations in gas inflow rates. We place constraints on the mass loading of galactic outflows and perform a metal budget analysis, finding that massive $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies retain only 30% of metals produced, implying that a large mass of metals resides in the circumgalactic medium., Comment: 35 pages, 17 figures, submitted to ApJ

We investigate the conditions that facilitate galactic-scale outflows using a sample of 155 typical star-forming galaxies at $z$~2 drawn from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. The sample includes deep rest-frame UV spectroscopy from the Keck Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS), which provides spectral coverage of several low-ionisation interstellar (LIS) metal absorption lines and Ly$\alpha$ emission. Outflow velocities are calculated from the centroids of the LIS absorption and/or Ly$\alpha$ emission, as well as the highest-velocity component of the outflow from the blue wings of the LIS absorption lines. Outflow velocities are found to be marginally correlated or independent of galaxy properties, such as star-formation rate (SFR) and star-formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$). Outflow velocity scales with SFR as a power-law with index 0.24, which suggests that the outflows may be primarily driven by mechanical energy generated by supernovae explosions, as opposed to radiation pressure acting on dusty material. On the other hand, outflow velocity and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ are not significantly correlated, which may be due to the limited dynamic range of $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ probed by our sample. The relationship between outflow velocity and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ normalised by stellar mass ($\Sigma_{\rm sSFR}$), as a proxy for gravitational potential, suggests that strong outflows (e.g., > 200 km s$^{-1}$) appear ubiquitous above a threshold of log($\Sigma_{\rm sSFR}/\rm{yr}^{-1}\ \rm{kpc}^{-2}$) ~ -11.3, and that above this threshold, outflow velocity uncouples from $\Sigma_{\rm sSFR}$. The connection between the escape fraction of ionizing photons ($f_{\rm esc}$) and star-formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) is a key input for reionization models, but remains untested at high redshift. We analyse 35 z~3 galaxies from the Keck Lyman Continuum Survey (KLCS) covered by deep, rest far-UV spectra of the Lyman continuum (LyC) and high-resolution HST V$_{606}$ imaging, enabling estimates of both $f_{\rm esc}$ and rest-UV sizes. Using S\'ersic profile fits to HST images and spectral-energy distribution fits to multi-band photometry, we measure effective sizes and star-formation rates for the galaxies in our sample, and separate the sample into two bins of $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$. Based on composite spectra, we estimate <$f_{\rm esc}$> for both $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ subsamples, finding no significant difference in <$f_{\rm esc}$> between the two. To test the representativeness of the KLCS HST sample and the robustness of this result, we attempt to recover the well-established correlation between $f_{\rm esc}$ and Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width. This correlation is not significant within the KLCS HST sample, indicating that the sample is not sufficient for correlating $f_{\rm esc}$ and galaxy properties such as $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$. We perform stacking simulations using the KLCS parent sample to determine the optimal sample size for robust probes of the $f_{\rm esc}$-$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ connection to inform future HST LyC observing programs. For a program with a selection independent of ionizing properties, >= 90 objects are required; for one preferentially observing strongly-leaking LyC sources, >= 58 objects are required. More generally, measuring the connection between $f_{\rm esc}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ requires a larger, representative sample spanning a wide dynamic range in galaxies properties such as $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from ALMA 1.2mm continuum observations of a sample of 27 star-forming galaxies at z=2.1-2.5 from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. These galaxies have gas-phase metallicity and star-formation rate measurements from Hb, [OIII], Ha, and [NII]. Using stacks of Spitzer, Herschel, and ALMA photometry (rest-frame ~ 8-400$\mu$m), we examine the IR SED of high-redshift subsolar metallicity (~0.5 $Z_{\odot}$) LIRGs. We find that the data agree well with an average SED template of higher luminosity local low-metallicity dwarf galaxies (reduced $\chi^2$ of 1.8). When compared with the commonly used templates for solar-metallicity local galaxies or high-redshift LIRGs and ULIRGs, even in the most favorable case (with reduced $\chi^2$ of 2.8), the templates are rejected at >98% confidence level. The broader and hotter IR SED of both the local dwarfs and high-redshift subsolar metallicity galaxies may result from different grain properties, a clumpy dust geometry, or a harder/more intense ionizing radiation field that heats the dust to higher temperatures. The obscured SFR indicated by the FIR emission of the subsolar metallicity galaxies is only ~ 60% of the total SFR, which is considerably lower than that of the local LIRGs with ~ 96-97% obscured fractions. Due to the evolving IR SED shape, the local LIRG templates fit to mid-IR data can overestimate the Rayleigh-Jeans tail measurements at z~2 by a factor of 2-20, and these templates underestimate IR luminosities if fit to the observed ALMA fluxes by >0.4dex. At a given stellar mass or metallicity, dust masses at z~2.3 are an order of magnitude higher than those at z~0. Given the predicted molecular gas mass fractions, the observed z~2.3 dust-to-stellar mass ratios suggest lower dust-to-molecular gas masses than in local galaxies at the same metallicity., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 29 pages, 2 appendices, 10 figures, 3 tables

The Baldwin, Philips, & Terlevich diagram of [O III]/H$\beta$ vs. [N II]/H$\alpha$ (hereafter N2-BPT) has long been used as a tool for classifying galaxies based on the dominant source of ionizing radiation. Recent observations have demonstrated that galaxies at $z\sim2$ reside offset from local galaxies in the N2-BPT space. In this paper, we conduct a series of controlled numerical experiments to understand the potential physical processes driving this offset. We model nebular line emission in a large sample of galaxies, taken from the SIMBA cosmological hydrodynamic galaxy formation simulation, using the CLOUDY photoionization code to compute the nebular line luminosities from H II regions. We find that the observed shift toward higher [O III]/H$\beta$ and [N II]/H$\alpha$ values at high redshift arises from sample selection: when we consider only the most massive galaxies $M_* \sim 10^{10-11} M_\odot$, the offset naturally appears, due to their high metallicities. We predict that deeper observations that probe lower-mass galaxies will reveal galaxies that lie on a locus comparable to $z\sim 0$ observations. Even when accounting for sample selection effects, we find that there is a subtle mismatch between simulations and observations. To resolve this discrepancy, we investigate the impact of varying ionization parameters, H II region densities, gas-phase abundance patterns, and increasing radiation field hardness on N2-BPT diagrams. We find that either decreasing the ionization parameter or increasing the N/O ratio of galaxies at fixed O/H can move galaxies along a self-similar arc in N2-BPT space that is occupied by high-redshift galaxies., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures. The combination of the MOSDEF and KBSS-MOSFIRE surveys represents the largest joint investment of Keck/MOSFIRE time to date, with ~3000 galaxies at 1.4<=z<=3.8, roughly half of which are at z~2. MOSDEF is photometric- and spectroscopic-redshift selected with a rest-optical magnitude limit, while KBSS-MOSFIRE is primarily selected based on rest-UV colors and a rest-UV magnitude limit. Analyzing both surveys in a uniform manner with consistent spectral-energy-distribution (SED) models, we find that the MOSDEF z~2 targeted sample has a higher median M_* and redder rest U-V color than the KBSS-MOSFIRE z~2 targeted sample, and a smaller median SED-based SFR and sSFR (SFR(SED) and sSFR(SED)). Specifically, MOSDEF targeted a larger population of red galaxies with U-V and V-J >=1.25, while KBSS-MOSFIRE contains more young galaxies with intense star formation. Despite these differences in the z~2 targeted samples, the subsets of the surveys with multiple emission lines detected and analyzed in previously published work are much more similar. All median host-galaxy properties with the exception of stellar population age -- i.e., M_*, SFR(SED), sSFR(SED), A_V, and UVJ colors -- agree within the uncertainties. In the next decade, deep galaxy surveys from telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope and Roman Space Telescope will provide transformational data sets that will greatly enhance the understanding of galaxy formation during the epoch of reionization (EoR). In this work, we present the Deep Realistic Extragalactic Model (DREaM) for creating synthetic galaxy catalogs. Our model combines dark matter simulations, subhalo abundance matching and empirical models, and includes galaxy positions, morphologies, and spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The resulting synthetic catalog extends to redshifts $z \sim 12 $, and galaxy masses $\log_{10}(M/M_{\odot}) = 5 $ covering an area of $1\, {\rm deg}^2$ on the sky. We use DREaM to explore the science returns of a $1\, {\rm deg}^2$ \emph{Roman} UDF, and to provide a resource for optimizing ultra-deep survey designs. We find that a \emph{Roman} UDF to $\sim 30\,m_{\rm AB}$ will potentially detect more than $10^6$ $M_{\rm UV}<-17$ galaxies, with more than $10^4$ at redshifts $z>7$, offering an unparalleled dataset for constraining galaxy properties during the EoR. We investigate the relationship between dust attenuation and stellar mass ($M_*$) in star-forming galaxies over cosmic time. For this analysis, we compare measurements from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey at $z\sim2.3$ and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) at $z\sim0$, augmenting the latter optical dataset with both UV Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and mid-infrared Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) photometry from the GALEX-SDSS-WISE Catalog. We quantify dust attenuation using both spectroscopic measurements of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ emission lines, and photometric measurements of the rest-UV stellar continuum. The H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ ratio is used to determine the magnitude of attenuation at the wavelength of H$\alpha$, $A_{{\rm H}\alpha}$. Rest-UV colors and spectral-energy-distribution fitting are used to estimate $A_{1600}$, the magnitude of attenuation at a rest wavelength of 1600\AA. As in previous work, we find a lack of significant evolution in the relation between dust attenuation and $M_*$ over the redshift range $z\sim0$ to $z\sim2.3$. Folding in the latest estimates of the evolution of $M_{{\rm dust}}$, $({M_{{\rm dust}}}/{M_{{\rm gas}}})$, and gas surface density at fixed $M_*$, we find that the expected $M_{{\rm dust}}$ and dust mass surface density are both significantly higher at $z\sim2.3$ than at $z\sim0$. These differences appear at odds with the lack of evolution in dust attenuation. To explain the striking constancy in attenuation vs. $M_*$, it is essential to determine the relationship between metallicity and $({M_{{\rm dust}}}/{M_{{\rm gas}}})$, the dust mass absorption coefficient, and dust geometry, and the evolution of these relations and quantities from $z\sim0$ to $z\sim2.3$., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJ

Reionisation-era galaxies often display intense nebular emission lines, both in rest-frame optical ([OIII]+H$\beta$) and ultraviolet (UV; CIII], CIV). How such strong nebular emission is powered remains unclear, with both active galactic nuclei (AGN) and hot stars considered equally viable. The UV continuum slopes of these early systems tend to be very blue ($\beta<-2$), reflecting minimal dust obscuration, young ages, and low metallicities. This contrasts with narrow-lined AGN at $z\sim2-3$, whose UV slopes are significantly redder ($\beta>-1$) than typical star-forming systems in the reionisation era. To investigate the properties of AGN in the reionisation era, we have conducted a search for potential examples of rare analogues with blue continua at intermediate redshift ($z\sim2-3$). Our goals are to determine whether AGN with intense line emission and blue continua exist and thereby to establish the range of rest-frame UV and optical line ratios in this population. In this paper we report the detection of a X-ray luminous AGN at $z=3.21$ (UDS-24561) with extreme [OIII]+H$\beta$ line emission (EW $=1300$ \r{A}) and a blue UV continuum slope ($\beta=-2.34$). MMT/Binospec and Keck/MOSFIRE spectra indicate rest-frame UV line ratios consistent with AGN photoionisation models and rest-frame optical lines with both a narrow component (FWHM $=154$ km$/$s) and extended broad wings (FWHM $=977$ km$/$s), consistent with outflowing gas. We present deep Keck/MOSFIRE $H$-band spectroscopic observations covering the [CIII],CIII]$\lambda\lambda1907,1909$ doublet for three $z\sim8$ galaxy candidates in the AEGIS field. Along with non-detections in two galaxies, we obtain one of the highest-redshift detections to-date of [CIII]$\lambda 1907$ for the galaxy AEGIS-33376, finding $z_{\rm spec}=7.945\pm0.001$. We measure a [CIII]$\lambda$1907 flux of $2.24\pm0.71\times10^{-18} \mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1} \mbox{ cm}^{-2}$, corresponding to a rest-frame equivalent width of $20.3\pm6.5 \unicode{x212B}$ for the single line. Given the not very constraining upper limit for CIII]$\lambda 1909$ based on strong sky-line contamination, we assume a [CIII]$\lambda$1907/CIII]$\lambda 1909$ doublet ratio of 1.5 and infer a total [CIII],CIII]$\lambda\lambda1907,1909$ equivalent width of $33.7\pm 10.8 \unicode{x212B}$. We repeat the same reductions and analysis on multiple subsets of our raw data divided on the basis of time and observing conditions, verifying that the [CIII]$\lambda 1907$ emission is present for AEGIS-33376 throughout our observations. We also confirm that the significance of the [CIII]$\lambda 1907$ detection in different subsets of our data tracks that of brighter emission features detected on the same multi-slit mask. These multiple tests suggest that the observed emission line is real and associated with the $z\sim 8$ target. The strong observed [CIII],CIII]$\lambda\lambda1907,1909$ in AEGIS-33376 likely indicates ISM conditions of low metallicity, high ionization parameter, and a hard ionizing spectrum, although AGN contributions are possible. This single detection represents a sizable increase in the current sample [CIII],CIII]$\lambda\lambda1907,1909$ detections at $z>7$, while $\textit{JWST}$ will provide the first statistical samples of such measurements at these redshifts., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; Accepted to ApJL

We present spatially resolved Hubble Space Telescope grism spectroscopy of 15 galaxies at $z\sim0.8$ drawn from the DEEP2 survey. We analyze H$\alpha$+[N II], [S II] and [S III] emission on kpc scales to explore which mechanisms are powering emission lines at high redshifts, testing which processes may be responsible for the well-known offset of high redshift galaxies from the $z\sim0$ locus in the [O III]/H$\beta$ versus [N II]/H$\alpha$ BPT (Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich) excitation diagram. We study spatially resolved emission line maps to examine evidence for active galactic nuclei (AGN), shocks, diffuse ionized gas (DIG), or escaping ionizing radiation, all of which may contribute to the BPT offsets observed in our sample. We do not find significant evidence of AGN in our sample and quantify that, on average, AGN would need to contribute $\sim$25% of the H$\alpha$ flux in the central resolution element in order to cause the observed BPT offsets. We find weak ($2\sigma$) evidence of DIG emission at low surface brightnesses, yielding an implied total DIG emission fraction of $\sim$20%, which is not significant enough to be the dominant emission line driver in our sample. In general we find that the observed emission is dominated by star forming H II regions. We discuss trends with demographic properties and the possible role of $\alpha$-enhanced abundance patterns in the emission spectra of high redshift galaxies. Our results indicate that photo-ionization modeling with stellar population synthesis inputs is a valid tool to explore the specific star formation properties which may cause BPT offsets, to be explored in future work., Comment: 27 pages, 26 figures. We present the first statistical analysis of kinematically-resolved, spatially-extended Ly$\alpha$ emission around $z = 2-3$ galaxies in the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS) using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). Our sample of 59 star-forming galaxies ($z_\mathrm{med} = 2.29$) comprises the subset with typical KCWI integration times of ~5 hours and with existing imaging data from the Hubble Space Telescope and/or adaptive optics-assisted integral field spectroscopy. The high resolution images were used to evaluate the azimuthal dependence of the diffuse Ly$\alpha$ emission with respect to the stellar continuum within projected galactocentric distances of $\lesssim 30$ proper kpc. We introduce cylindrically-projected 2D spectra (CP2D) that map the averaged Ly$\alpha$ spectral profile over a specified range of azimuthal angle, as a function of impact parameter around galaxies. The averaged CP2D spectrum of all galaxies shows clear signatures of Ly$\alpha$ resonant scattering by outflowing gas. We stacked the CP2D spectra of individual galaxies over ranges of azimuthal angle with respect to their major axes. The extended Ly$\alpha$ emission along the galaxy principal axes are statistically indistinguishable, with residual asymmetry of $\le$ 2% ($\sim 2 \sigma$) of the integrated Ly$\alpha$ emission. The symmetry implies that the Ly$\alpha$ scattering medium is dominated by outflows in all directions within 30 kpc. Meanwhile, we find that the blueshifted component of Ly$\alpha$ emission is marginally stronger along galaxy minor axes for galaxies with relatively weak Ly$\alpha$ emission. We speculate that this weak directional dependence of Ly$\alpha$ emission becomes discernible only when the Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction is low. Observations of reionization-era analogs at $z\sim3$ are a powerful tool for constraining reionization. Rest-ultraviolet observations are particularly useful, in which both direct and indirect tracers of ionizing-photon production and escape can be observed. We analyse a sample of 124 $z\sim3$ galaxies from the Keck Lyman Continuum Spectroscopic Survey, with sensitive spectroscopic measurements of the Lyman continuum (LyC) region. We present a method of removing foreground contamination from our sample using high-resolution, multiband Hubble Space Telescope imaging. We re-measure the global properties of the cleaned sample of 13 individually-detected LyC sources and 107 individually-undetected sources, including a sample-averaged absolute escape fraction of $f_{esc,abs}=0.06\pm0.01$ and a sample-averaged ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing ultraviolet flux density of $_{out}=0.040\pm0.006$, corrected for attenuation from the intergalactic and circumgalactic media. Based on composite spectra, we also recover a strong positive correlation between $_{out}$ and Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width (W$_\lambda$(Ly$\alpha$)) and a negative correlation between $_{out}$ and UV luminosity. As in previous work, we interpret the relationship between $_{out}$ and W$_\lambda$(Ly$\alpha$) in terms of the modulation of the escape of ionizing radiation from star-forming galaxies based on the covering fraction of neutral gas. We also use a W$_\lambda$(Ly$\alpha$)-weighted $_{out}$ to estimate an ionizing emissivity from star-forming galaxies at $z\sim3$ as $\epsilon_{\rm LyC}\simeq5.5\times10^{24}$erg s$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-3}$. This estimate, evaluated using the uncontaminated sample of this work, affirms that the contribution of galaxies to the ionizing background at $z\sim3$ is comparable to that of active galactic nuclei., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The complex structure of gas, metals, and dust in the interstellar and circumgalactic medium (ISM and CGM, respectively) in star-forming galaxies can be probed by Ly$\alpha$ emission and absorption, low-ionization interstellar (LIS) metal absorption, and dust reddening E(B-V). We present a statistical analysis of the mutual correlations among Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width (EW$_{Ly\alpha}$), LIS equivalent width (EW$_{LIS}$), and E(B-V) in a sample of 157 star-forming galaxies at $z\sim2.3$. With measurements obtained from individual, deep rest-UV spectra and spectral-energy distribution (SED) modeling, we find that the tightest correlation exists between EW$_{LIS}$ and E(B-V), although correlations among all three parameters are statistically significant. These results signal a direct connection between dust and metal-enriched HI gas, and that they are likely co-spatial. By comparing our results with the predictions of different ISM/CGM models, we favor a dusty ISM/CGM model where dust resides in HI gas clumps and Ly$\alpha$ photons escape through the low HI covering fraction/column density intra-clump medium. Finally, we investigate the factors that potentially contribute to the intrinsic scatter in the correlations studied in this work, including metallicity, outflow kinematics, Ly$\alpha$ production efficiency, and slit loss. Specifically, we find evidence that scatter in the relationship between EW$_{Ly\alpha}$ and E(B-V) reflects the variation in metal-to-HI covering fraction ratio as a function of metallicity, and the effects of outflows on the porosity of the ISM/CGM. Future simulations incorporating star-formation feedback and the radiative transfer of Ly$\alpha$ photons will provide key constraints on the spatial distributions of neutral hydrogen gas and dust in the ISM/CGM structure., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We analyze the rest-optical emission-line ratios of z~1.5 galaxies drawn from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. Using composite spectra we investigate the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) at z~1.5 and measure its evolution to z=0. When using gas-phase metallicities based on the N2 line ratio, we find that the MZR evolution from z~1.5 to z=0 depends on stellar mass, evolving by $\Delta\rm log(\rm O/H)\sim0.25$ dex at $M_*<10^{9.75}M_{\odot}$ down to $\Delta\rm log(\rm O/H)\sim0.05$ at $M_*>10^{10.5}M_{\odot}$. In contrast, the O3N2-based MZR shows a constant offset of $\Delta\rm log(\rm O/H)\sim0.30$ across all masses, consistent with previous MOSDEF results based on independent metallicity indicators, and suggesting that O3N2 provides a more robust metallicity calibration for our z~1.5 sample. We investigated the secondary dependence of the MZR on SFR by measuring correlated scatter about the mean $M_*$-specific SFR and $M_*-\log(\rm O3N2)$ relations. We find an anti-correlation between $\log(\rm O/H)$ and sSFR offsets, indicating the presence of a $M_*$-SFR-Z relation, though with limited significance. Additionally, we find that our z~1.5 stacks lie along the z=0 metallicity sequence at fixed $\mu=\log(M_*/M_{\odot})-0.6\times\log(\rm SFR / M_{\odot} yr^{-1})$ suggesting that the z~1.5 stacks can be described by the z=0 fundamental metallicity relation (FMR). However, using different calibrations can shift the calculated metallicities off of the local FMR, indicating that appropriate calibrations are essential for understanding metallicity evolution with redshift. Finally, understanding how [NII]/H$\alpha$ scales with galaxy properties is crucial to accurately describe the effects of blended [NII] and H$\alpha$ on redshift and H$\alpha$ flux measurements in future large surveys utilizing low-resolution spectra such as with Euclid and the Roman Space Telescope., Comment: 14 Pages, 9 figures, Accepted to MNRAS

We present results from the NIRVANDELS survey investigating the gas-phase metallicity ($\mathrm{Z}_{\mathrm{gas}}$, tracing O/H) and stellar metallicity ($Z_{\star}$, tracing Fe/H) of 33 star-forming galaxies at redshifts $2.95 < z < 3.80$. Based on a combined analysis of deep optical and near-IR spectra, tracing the rest-frame far ultraviolet and rest-frame optical respectively, we present the first simultaneous determination of the stellar and gas-phase mass-metallicity relationships (MZRs) at $z\simeq3.4$. In both cases, we find that metallicity increases with increasing stellar mass ($M_{\star}$), and that the power-law slope at $M_{\star} \lesssim 10^{10} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ of both MZRs scales as $Z \propto M_{\star}^{0.3}$. Comparing the stellar and gas-phase MZRs, we present direct evidence for super-solar O/Fe ratios (i.e., $\alpha$-enhancement) at $z>3$, finding $\mathrm{(O/Fe)}\simeq (2.54 \pm 0.38) \times \mathrm{(O/Fe)}_{\odot}$, with no clear dependence on $M_{\star}$., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS accepted

Using the near-IR spectroscopy of the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey, we investigate the role of local environment in the gas-phase metallicity of galaxies. The local environment measurements are derived from accurate and uniformly calculated photometric redshifts with well-calibrated probability distributions. Based on rest-frame optical emission lines, [NII]$\lambda6584$ and H$\alpha$, we measure gas-phase oxygen abundance of 167 galaxies at $1.37\leq z\leq1.7$ and 303 galaxies at $2.09\leq z\leq2.61$, located in diverse environments. We find that at $z\sim1.5$, the average metallicity of galaxies in overdensities with $M_*\sim10^{9.8}M_\odot, 10^{10.2}M_\odot$ and $10^{10.8}M_\odot$ is higher relative to their field counterparts by $0.094\pm0.051$, $0.068\pm0.028$ and $0.052\pm0.043$ dex, respectively. However, this metallicity enhancement does not exist at higher redshift, $z\sim2.3$, where, compared to the field galaxies, we find $0.056\pm0.043$, $0.056\pm0.028$ and $0.096\pm 0.034$ dex lower metallicity for galaxies in overdense environments with $M_*\sim10^{9.8}M_\odot, 10^{10.2}M_\odot$ and $10^{10.7}M_\odot$, respectively. Our results suggest that, at $1.37\leq z\leq2.61$, the variation of mass-metallicity relation with local environment is small ($<0.1$dex), and reverses at $z\sim2$. Our results support the hypothesis that, at the early stages of cluster formation, owing to efficient gas cooling, galaxies residing in overdensities host a higher fraction of pristine gas with prominent primordial gas accretion, which lowers their gas-phase metallicity compared to their coeval field galaxies. However, as the Universe evolves to lower redshifts ($z\lesssim2$), shock-heated gas in overdensities cannot cool down efficiently, and galaxies become metal-rich rapidly due to the suppression of pristine gas inflow and re-accretion of metal-enriched outflows in overdensities., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We use a sample of 532 star-forming galaxies at redshifts $z\sim 1.4-2.6$ with deep rest-frame optical spectra from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey to place the first constraints on the nebular attenuation curve at high redshift. Based on the first five low-order Balmer emission lines detected in the composite spectra of these galaxies (${\rm H\alpha}$ through ${\rm H\epsilon}$), we derive a nebular attenuation curve that is similar in shape to that of the Galactic extinction curve, suggesting that the dust covering fraction and absorption/scattering properties along the lines-of-sight to massive stars at high redshift are similar to those of the average Milky Way sightline. The curve derived here implies nebular reddening values that are on average systematically larger than those derived for the stellar continuum. In the context of stellar population synthesis models that include the effects of stellar multiplicity, the difference in reddening of the nebular lines and stellar continuum may imply molecular cloud crossing timescales that are a factor of $\gtrsim 3\times$ longer than those inferred for local molecular clouds, star-formation rates that are constant or increasing with time such that newly-formed and dustier OB associations always dominate the ionizing flux, and/or that the dust responsible for reddening the nebular emission may be associated with non-molecular (i.e., ionized and neutral) phases of the ISM. We present rest-optical spectroscopic properties of a sample of four galaxies in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ALMA HUDF). These galaxies span the redshift range $1.41 \leq z \leq 2.54$ and the stellar mass range $10.36\leq\log(M_*/{\rm M}_{\odot})\leq10.91$. They have existing far-infrared and radio measurements of dust-continuum and molecular gas emission from which bolometric star-formation rates (SFRs), dust masses, and molecular gas masses have been estimated. We use new $H$- and $K$-band near-infrared spectra from the Keck/MOSFIRE spectrograph to estimate SFRs from dust-corrected H$\alpha$ emission (SFR(H$\alpha$)) and gas-phase oxygen abundances from the ratio [NII]$\lambda 6584$/H$\alpha$. We find that the dust-corrected SFR(H$\alpha$) is systematically lower than the bolometric SFR by a factor of several, and measure gas-phase oxygen abundances in a narrow range, $12+\log(\mbox{O/H})=8.59-8.69$ ($0.8-1.0\: (\mbox{O/H})_{\odot}$). Relative to a large $z\sim 2$ comparison sample from the MOSDEF survey, the ALMA HUDF galaxies scatter roughly symmetrically around the best-fit linear mass-metallicity relation, providing tentative evidence for a flattening in the SFR dependence of metallicity at high stellar mass. Combining oxygen abundances with estimates of dust and molecular gas masses, we show that there is no significant evolution in the normalization of the dust-to-gas ratio DGR vs. metallicity relation from $z\sim0$ to $z\sim2$. This result is consistent with some semi-analytic models and cosmological simulations describing the evolution of dust in galaxies. Tracing the actual form of the DGR vs. metallicity relation at high redshift now requires combined measurements of dust, gas, and metallicity over a significantly wider range in metallicity., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted to ApJ Letters

We investigate the evolution of galaxy gas-phase metallicity (O/H) over the range $z=0-3.3$ using samples of $\sim300$ galaxies at $z\sim2.3$ and $\sim150$ galaxies at $z\sim3.3$ from the MOSDEF survey. This analysis crucially utilizes different metallicity calibrations at $z\sim0$ and $z>1$ to account for evolving ISM conditions. We find significant correlations between O/H and stellar mass ($M_*$) at $z\sim2.3$ and $z\sim3.3$. The low-mass power law slope of the mass-metallicity relation is remarkably invariant over $z=0-3.3$, such that $\textrm{O/H}\propto M_*^{0.30}$ at all redshifts in this range. At fixed $M_*$, O/H decreases with increasing redshift as dlog(O/H)/d$z=-0.11\pm0.02$. We find no evidence that the fundamental metallicity relation between $M_*$, O/H, and star-formation rate (SFR) evolves out to $z\sim3.3$, with galaxies at $z\sim2.3-3.3$ having O/H within 0.04~dex of local galaxies matched in $M_*$ and SFR on average. We employ analytic chemical evolution models to place constraints on the mass and metal loading factors of galactic outflows. The efficiency of metal removal increases toward lower $M_*$ at fixed redshift, and toward higher redshift at fixed $M_*$. These models suggest that the slope of the mass-metallicity relation is set by the scaling of the metal loading factor of outflows with $M_*$, not by the change in gas fraction as a function of $M_*$. The evolution toward lower O/H at fixed $M_*$ with increasing redshift is driven by both higher gas fraction (leading to stronger dilution of ISM metals) and higher metal removal efficiency, with models suggesting that both effects contribute approximately equally to the observed evolution. These results suggest that the processes governing the smooth baryonic growth of galaxies via gas flows and star formation hold in the same form over at least the past 12~Gyr., Comment: 36 pages, 19 figures, accepted to ApJ. We present results on the properties of neon emission in $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies drawn from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. Doubly-ionized neon ([NeIII]3869) is detected at $\geq3\sigma$ in 61 galaxies, representing $\sim$25% of the MOSDEF sample with H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, and [OIII]$5007$ detections at similar redshifts. We consider the neon emission-line properties of both individual galaxies with [NeIII]3869 detections and composite $z\sim2$ spectra binned by stellar mass. With no requirement of [NeIII]3869 detection, the latter provide a more representative picture of neon emission-line properties in the MOSDEF sample. The [NeIII]3869/[OII]3727 ratio (Ne3O2) is anti-correlated with stellar mass in $z\sim2$ galaxies, as expected based on the mass-metallicity relation. It is also positively correlated with the [OIII]$5007$/[OII]$3727$ ratio (O32), but $z\sim2$ line ratios are offset towards higher Ne3O2 at fixed O32, compared with both local star-forming galaxies and individual H~II regions. Despite the offset towards higher Ne3O2 at fixed O32 at $z\sim2$, biases in inferred Ne3O2-based metallicity are small. Accordingly, Ne3O2 may serve as an important metallicity indicator deep into the reionization epoch. Analyzing additional rest-optical line ratios including [NeIII]$3869$/[OIII]$5007$ (Ne3O3) and [OIII]$5007$/H$\beta$ (O3H$\beta$), we conclude that the nebular emission-line ratios of $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies suggest a harder ionizing spectrum (lower stellar metallicity, i.e., Fe/H) at fixed gas-phase oxygen abundance, compared to systems at $z\sim0$. These new results based on neon lend support to the physical picture painted by oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulfur emission, of an ionized ISM in high-redshift star-forming galaxies irradiated by chemically young, $\alpha$-enhanced massive stars., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted to ApJ Letters

We analyze the rest-optical emission-line spectra of $z\sim2.3$ star-forming galaxies in the complete MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. In investigating the origin of the well-known offset between the sequences of high-redshift and local galaxies in the [O III]5008/H$\beta$ vs. [N II]6585/H$\alpha$ ("[N II] BPT") diagram, we define two populations of $z\sim2.3$ MOSDEF galaxies. These include the "high" population that is offset towards higher [O III]5008/H$\beta$ and/or [N II]6585/H$\alpha$ with respect to the local SDSS sequence and the "low" population that overlaps the SDSS sequence. These two groups are also segregated within the [O III]5008/H$\beta$ vs. [S II]6718,6733/H$\alpha$ and the [O III]4960,5008/[O II]3727,3730 (O$_{32}$) vs. ([O III]4960,5008+[O II]3727,3730)/H$\beta$ (R$_{23}$) diagram, which suggests qualitatively that star-forming regions in the more offset galaxies are characterized by harder ionizing spectra at fixed nebular oxygen abundance. We also investigate many galaxy properties of the split sample and find that the "high" sample is on average smaller in size and less massive, but has higher specific star-formation rate and star-formation-rate surface density values and is slightly younger compared to the "low" population. From Cloudy+BPASS photoionization models, we estimate that the "high" population has a lower stellar metallicity (i.e., harder ionizing spectrum) but slightly higher nebular metallicity and higher ionization parameter compared to the "low" population. While the "high" population is more $\alpha$-enhanced (i.e., higher $\alpha$/Fe) than the "low" population, both samples are significantly more $\alpha$-enhanced compared to local star-forming galaxies with similar rest-optical line ratios. These differences must be accounted for in all high-redshift star-forming galaxies -- not only those "offset" from local excitation sequences., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

The observed empirical relation between the star-formation rates (SFR) of low-redshift galaxies and their radio continuum luminosity offers a potential means of measuring SFR in high redshift galaxies that is unaffected by dust obscuration. In this study, we make the first test for redshift evolution in the SFR-radio continuum relation at high redshift using dust-corrected H$\alpha$ SFR. Our sample consists of 178 galaxies from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) Survey at $1.4 < z < 2.6$ with rest-frame optical spectroscopy and deep 1.5 GHz radio continuum observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) GOODS North field. Using a stacking analysis we compare the observed radio continuum luminosities with those predicted from the dust-corrected H$\alpha$ SFR assuming a range of $z\sim0$ relations. We find no evidence for a systematic evolution with redshift, when stacking the radio continuum as a function of dust-corrected H$\alpha$ SFR and when stacking both optical spectroscopy and radio continuum as a function of stellar mass. We conclude that locally calibrated relations between SFR and radio continuum luminosity remain valid out to $z\sim 2$., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. We study the properties of 55 morphologically-identified merging galaxy systems at z~2. These systems are flagged as mergers based on features such as tidal tails, double nuclei, and asymmetry. Our sample is drawn from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey, along with a control sample of isolated galaxies at the same redshift. We consider the relationships between stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and gas-phase metallicity for both merging and non-merging systems. In the local universe, merging systems are characterized by an elevated SFR and depressed metallicity compared to isolated systems at a given mass. Our results indicate SFR enhancement and metallicity deficit for merging systems relative to non-merging systems for a fixed stellar mass at z~2, though larger samples are required to establish these preliminary results with higher statistical significance. In future work, it will be important to establish if the enhanced SFR and depressed metallicity in high-redshift mergers deviate from the "fundamental metallicity relation," as is observed in mergers in the local universe, and therefore shed light on gas flows during galaxy interactions., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 5 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We present constraints on the massive star and ionized gas properties for a sample of 62 star-forming galaxies at $z\sim2.3$. Using BPASS stellar population models, we fit the rest-UV spectra of galaxies in our sample to estimate age and stellar metallicity which, in turn, determine the ionizing spectrum. In addition to the median properties of well-defined subsets of our sample, we derive the ages and stellar metallicities for 30 high-SNR individual galaxies -- the largest sample of individual galaxies at high redshift with such measurements. Most galaxies in this high-SNR subsample have stellar metallicities of $0.001

We present new measurements of the spatial distribution and kinematics of neutral hydrogen in the circumgalactic and intergalactic medium surrounding star-forming galaxies at z ~ 2. Using the spectra of ~ 3000 galaxies with redshifts +/- 0.4 from the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS), we assemble a sample of more than 200,000 distinct foreground-background pairs with projected angular separations of 3 - 500 arcsec and spectroscopic redshifts, with <$z_{fg}$> = 2.23 and <$z_{bg}$> = 2.57. The ensemble of sightlines and foreground galaxies is used to construct a 2D map of the mean excess Ly$\alpha$ optical depth relative to the intergalactic mean as a function of projected galactocentric distance (20 < $D_{tran}$/pkpc < 4000) and line-of-sight velocity. We provide information on the line-of-sight kinematics of H I gas as a function of projected distance $D_{tran}$. We compare the map with cosmological zoom-in simulation, finding qualitative agreement between them. A simple two-component (accretion, outflow) analytical model generally reproduces the observed line-of-sight kinematics and projected spatial distribution of H I. The best-fitting model suggests that galaxy-scale outflows with initial velocity $v_{out}$ ~ 600 km/s dominate the kinematics of circumgalactic H I out to $D_{tran}$ ~ 50 kpc, while H I at $D_{tran}$ > 100 kpc is dominated by infall with characteristic $v_{in}$ < $v_c$, where $v_c$ is the circular velocity of the host halo ($M_h$ ~ $10^{12} M_\odot$). Over the impact parameter range 80 < $D_{tran}$/pkpc < 200, the H I line-of-sight velocity range reaches a minimum, with a corresponding flattening in the rest-frame Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width. These observations can be naturally explained as the transition between outflow-dominated and accretion-dominated flows. We derive the UV-optical stellar dust attenuation curve of galaxies at z=1.4-2.6 as a function of gas-phase metallicity. We use a sample of 218 star-forming galaxies, excluding those with very young or heavily obscured star formation, from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey with H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, and [NII]$\lambda 6585$ spectroscopic measurements. We constrain the shape of the attenuation curve by comparing the average flux densities of galaxies sorted into bins of dust obscuration using Balmer decrements, i.e., H$\alpha$-to-H$\beta$ luminosities. The average attenuation curve for the high-metallicity sample (12+log(O/H)>8.5, corresponding to $M_*\gtrsim10^{10.4}\,M_{\odot}$) has a shallow slope, identical to that of the Calzetti local starburst curve, and a significant UV 2175A extinction bump that is $\sim 0.5\times$ the strength of the Milky Way bump. On the other hand, the average attenuation curve of the low-metallicity sample (12+log(O/H) $\sim 8.2-8.5$) has a steeper slope similar to that of the SMC curve, only consistent with the Calzetti slope at the $3\sigma$ level. The UV bump is not detected in the low-metallicity curve, indicating the relative lack of the small dust grains causing the bump at low metallicities. Furthermore, we find that on average the nebular reddening (E(B-V)) is a factor of 2 times larger than that of the stellar continuum for galaxies with low metallicities, while the nebular and stellar reddening are similar for galaxies with higher metallicities. The latter is likely due to a high surface density of dusty clouds embedding the star forming regions but also reddening the continuum in the high-metallicity galaxies., Comment: 20 pages and 9 figures and 1 appendix, accepted for publication in ApJ
