The accumulation of amyloid-β protein (Aβ) plays an early role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The precise mechanism of how Aβ accumulation leads to synaptic dysfunction and cognitive impairment remains unclear but is likely due to small soluble oligomers of Aβ (oAβ). Most studies have used chemical synthetic or cell-secreted Aβ oligomers to study their pathogenic mechanisms, but the Aβ derived from human AD brain tissue is less well characterized. Here we review updated knowledge on the extraction and characterization of bioactive human AD brain oAβ and the mechanisms by which they cause hippocampal synaptic dysfunction. Human AD brain-derived oAβ can impair hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) and enhance long-term depression (LTD). Many studies suggest that oAβ may directly disrupt neuronal NMDA receptors, AMPA receptors and metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs). oAβ also impairs astrocytic synaptic functions, including glutamate uptake, D-serine release, and NMDA receptor function. We also discuss oAβ-induced neuronal hyperexcitation. These results may suggest a multi-target approach for the treatment of AD, including both oAβ neutralization and reversal of glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity.

This study investigated KLF7’s effect on sugar induced retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) biological activity. The RGCs cells divided into blank group (RA), high sugar group (RB), high sugar+NC group (RC) and high sugar+KLF7 group (RD) (transfected with KLF7 mimic) followed by analysis cell proliferation by MTT, cell apoptosis by flow cytometry and protein expression by western blot and ROS level. RB and RC group showed significantly reduced KLF7 mRNA and protein level compared to RA group (P < 0.05) without different between RB and RC group (P > 0.05). RD group had significantly increased LKF7 and Sirt1 protein expression (F = 113.3, P < 0.0, 01), reduced cell proliferation (P < 0.05) and increased RGCs apoptosis rate (P < 0.05) compared with RB and RC group. After 24 h, RB and RC group presented significantly higher ROS level (P < 0.05) which was reduced in RD group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, KLF7 can change sugar induced retinal ganglion cell biological activity and reduce the oxidative stress level.

63. Compound porcine cerebroside and ganglioside injections improved anxiety and cognitive dysfunction through the NF-κB pathway in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury

- Abstract
Background Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) can cause hippocampal inflammation and apoptosis, resulting in anxiety and cognitive dysfunction. Compound porcine cerebroside and ganglioside injections (CPCGI) are used to treat encephalopathy, but its therapeutic effects and mechanism require further exploration. Methods We screened key genes associated with the ischemic stroke (IS) and predicted their binding sites with CPCGI. We subsequently injected CPCGI into a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rat model. 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining and behavioral testing were performed. Hippocampal neuronal apoptosis was assessed by immunofluorescence. IL-1β, TNF-α, and NF-κB pathway were detected by Western blotting. Oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R)-HT-22 cells were treated CPCGI for 72 h. Cell viability and NF-κB were also evaluated. Results H2AC20, RPL3, RPL13A, RPL9, RPS23, and RPLP0 were identified as key IS genes. CPCGI was confirmed to interact with these proteins via molecular docking. Functional enrichment reflected the critical role of the NF-κB pathway in CIRI. Infarct volume and behavioral impairments in MCAO rats, especially anxiety and cognitive dysfunction, were improved by CPCGI in a dose-dependent manner. Immunofluorescence confirmed that hippocampal neuronal apoptosis was rescued by the CPCGI. Western blotting revealed that inflammation and NF-κB phosphorylation were inhibited. In vitro experiments showed that CPCGI increased the survival of OGD/R-HT-22 cells and inhibited phosphorylation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. Conclusion CPCGI can alleviate anxiety and cognitive dysfunction in CIRI and thus improve psychoneurological symptoms in patients with IS. We confirmed that CPCGI alleviate inflammation and apoptosis in the hippocampus by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway.

Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been identified to participate in regulating multiple malignancies. Herein, this study aimed to explore the clinical significance, biological function, and regulatory mechanisms of circRNA lysophosphatidic acid receptor 3 (circLPAR3) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cell malignant phenotypes and Warburg effect. Methods The qRT-PCR and Western blot were used to detect the levels of genes and proteins. Glucose uptake and lactate production were detected to determine the Warburg effect. The effects of circLPAR3 on ESCC cell proliferation, apoptosis, and metastasis were evaluated by MTT, 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EdU), flow cytometry, wound healing, and transwell assays. The binding interaction between miR-873-5p and circLPAR3 or lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) was verified using dual-luciferase reporter and RIP assays. Xenograft mice models were established to conduct in vivo analysis. Results CircLPAR3 is a stable circRNA and was increased in ESCC tissues and cells. Functionally, circLPAR3 knockdown suppressed ESCC cell Warburg effect, proliferation, metastasis, and induced apoptosis in vitro, and impeded xenograft tumor growth and Warburg effect in ESCC mice models. Mechanistically, circLPAR3 served as a sponge for miR-873-5p, which targeted LDHA. Moreover, circLPAR3 could regulate LDHA expression by sponging miR-873-5p. Thereafter, rescue experiments suggested that miR-873-5p inhibition reversed the anticancer effects of circLPAR3 silencing on ESCC cells. Furthermore, miR-873-5p overexpression restrained ESCC cell Warburg effect and oncogenic phenotypes, which were abolished by LDHA up-regulation. Conclusion CircLPAR3 knockdown suppressed ESCC cell growth, metastasis, and Warburg effect by miR-873-5p/LDHA axis, implying a promising molecular target for ESCC therapy.

To help resolve the current debate on whether countries should vaccinate the whole population against Covid, we offer a new perspective by looking at the issue as a case of diversity versus standardization, which, we believe, is at the heart of the issue, moving away from the politics. While diversity and standardization are, to a large extent, opposites, they are also complementary in social, economic and technological development. Over-promoting or artificially suppressing one or the other will harm the creativity and efficiency of an economy. The optimal balance between diversity and standardization is that when facing a new problem of an unknown nature, we must diversify and create a competition to find the best methods for solving it. In the current covid crisis, we have done just that, and now we have a good set of vaccines, some better than others. Once the best methods are found, the government of a country should concentrate and adopt them as the standard for the entire nation for implementation. When we develop vaccines, we need some diversity, a diversity of ideas, approaches and chemistry. Once the best vaccines have been found, we need to have standardization to quickly vaccinate the entire population and realize the benefits of the vaccines.

66. Contentions in the study of China’s political economy: building common ground

PurposeA main challenge in studying China is that different views clash. A more serious challenge is that studies that are critical of or dissent from the Chinese government policies are labeled “anti-China” by the Chinese authorities, affecting the free academic exchange of ideas on China. This article discusses this issue and proposes a long-term solution.Design/methodology/approachThis is a perspective study and uses the qualitative approach to develop the authors’ arguments.FindingsThe authors argue that the contention in China-related studies is derived primarily from the different perspectives that scholars use. This study identifies two main perspectives: the China-centric view and the rest of the world’s view. The combination of the clash of perspectives and the interference of the Chinese state hinders the development of our knowledge regarding China. Using Rawls’ theory of justice and the veil of ignorance, the authors propose to build common ground for the China study community based on academic freedom, equality and the rule of law. This study further shows that building the common ground is feasible.Practical implicationsThe authors’ proposed common ground will help create a free environment for meaningful exchange between different perspectives and reduce the risks in China studies.Originality/valueThe authors’ angle to examine the contentiousness and riskiness of China studies is new. It is the first time that different perspectives on China studies are delineated and compared, the costs of the contentiousness and riskiness are assessed, and the long-term consequences of different paths are examined.

Glioma is the most common malignancy of the nervous system with high rates of recurrence and mortality, even after surgery. The 5‐year survival rate is only about 5%. NEK8 is involved in multiple biological processes in a variety of cancers; however, its role in glioma is still not clear. In the current study, we evaluated the prognostic value of NEK8, as well as its role in the pathogenesis of glioma. Using a bioinformatics approach and RNA‐seq data from public databases, we found that NEK8 expression is elevated in glioma tissues; we further verified this result by RT‐PCR, Western blotting and immunochemistry using clinical samples. Functional enrichment analyses of genes with correlated expression indicated that elevated NEK8 expression is associated with increased immune cell infiltration in glioma and may affect the tumour microenvironment via the regulation of DNA damage/repair. Survival analyses revealed that high levels of NEK8 are associated with a poorer prognosis; higher WHO grade, IDH status, 1p/19q codeletion, age and NEK8 were identified as an independent prognostic factor. These findings support the crucial role of NEK8 in the progression of glioma via effects on immune cell infiltration and suggest that it is a new prognostic biomarker.

Residual sulfate (SO42- ) in precursor Ni0.8 Co0.15 Mn0.05 (OH)2 (pre-NCM) is commonly regarded as being harmful to Li[Ni0.8 Co0.15 Mn0.05 ]O2 (NCM) performance, leading to significant performance losses and also hampering the electrode fabrication. Therefore, manufacturers try their best to lower sulfate contents in pre-NCM. However, how the sulfate affects the cathode materials is not systematically studied. To address these issues, NCM was synthesized with different amounts of intentionally added sulfate (NH4 )2 SO4 in pre-NCM. It was demonstrated that anionic SO42- doped in NCM could influence the grain size in sintering process and stabilize the layer structure during the charge-discharge process at a certain doping amount. The first-principles calculations suggested that the SO42- doped in the transition metal layer could effectively facilitate Li+ diffusion in the lattice. SO42- doping could reduce the energy barrier for Li+ migration and then suppress drastic contraction of the c axis during cycling. The phase transition of H2 to H3 caused by c axis contraction was suppressed and the cycling performance was enhanced. The capacity retention could reach 80.9 (0.2 C) and 80.4 % (1 C) after 380 and 240 cycles in coin cells, respectively. These findings illustrate that a certain amount of sulfate could be beneficial to NCM cathodes.

This paper examines the ways in which three external governance mechanisms, namely market preferences, institutional investors, and debtholder monitoring, influence dividend payout decisions under a family-governance system. We find that family firms issue lower dividends when the dividend premium is high in the market. Institutional investors and family-controlled governance mechanisms interact to increase dividend payouts. Family firms under greater debtholder monitoring pay out more cash to shareholders. Our findings generate important policy implications.

Hidden Markov models are widely used for target tracking, where the process and measurement noises are usually modeled as independent Gaussian distributions for mathematical simplicity. However, the independence and Gaussian assumptions do not always hold in practice. For example, in a typical target tracking application, a radar is utilized to track a non-cooperative target. Measurement noise is correlated over time since the sampling frequency of a radar is usually far greater than the bandwidth of measurement noise. Besides, when target is maneuvering, the process and measurement noises are heavy-tailed and non-Gaussian due to intrinsic data generation mechanism. In this paper, we consider a linear pairwise Markov model (PMM) with Student's t noise to model non-cooperative single target tracking without clutter and missed detections. A PMM is more general than an HMM and can be used to model correlated measurement noise or correlated process and measurement noises. The Student's t distribution is one of the most commonly used heavy-tailed distribution and can be used to address irregular target motion. We mainly focus on solving the filtering problems for the model. First, we develop a filter for the case where noise statistics are accurately known. Second, we further consider the case of non-stationary Student's t noise, and propose a novel robust filter by employing a variational Bayesian method. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed filters is illustrated via simulation results.

Abstract The inhibition of foliar respiration by light is a crucial yet often overlooked component in estimating ecosystem respiration. However, current estimations of the light inhibition of ecosystem respiration are biased by ignoring the effects of moisture factors. We developed a novel physics‐constrained machine learning method to quantify the extent of light inhibition (Reli) driven by multiple factors in global ecosystems. Our findings revealed significant seasonal variations in light inhibition rate aligned with vegetation growth. Temperature predominantly influenced variations in Reli, and the temperature‐Reli relationship was regulated by vapor pressure deficit rather than soil water content. A reassessment of global ecosystem respiration revealed that current Earth system models (ESMs) overestimate ecosystem respiration in mid‐to‐high latitude dryland regions, with a global average light inhibition strength of 0.51 (±0.16). Knowledge from this study provides an accurate understanding of light inhibition driven by temperature and moisture coupling in simulating carbon cycle.

Study region: Heihe River Basin (HRB), Northwest China. Study focus: The study proposes an analytical scheme to identify trend, periodicity, and scale-correlation in climate, water, land, and vegetation resources over the past four decades using multivariate remote sensing data. New hydrological insights for the region: Heat and precipitation resources in the HRB have increased at rates of 14.27℃ yr−1 and 1.26 mm yr−1, respectively. The glacier area has decreased by 47.47 %. Additionally, the increase in upstream precipitation (2.82 mm yr−1) and glacier meltwater effectively replenishes runoff, soil water, and groundwater. The implementation of the ecological water diversion project (EWDP) in 2000 has contributed to enhancing runoff and lake storage capacity. The 9.28 % increase in vegetation cover (including cropland, forest, grassland, and shrubland) indicates an improvement in the hydrothermal conditions of the HRB. Additionally, the magnitude and direction of interactions among various natural resources vary across multiple spatial scales and time scales. The effect of hydrothermal coupling on vegetation is more prominent at the interdecadal scale. Vegetation growth in the upstream area is primarily influenced by thermal condition, while moisture plays a significant role in the midstream and downstream areas. Knowledge from this study contributes to the informed allocation of natural resources and offer policymakers valuable insights to enhance eco-environmental sustainability.

Sphingosine kinase1 (SphK1) is an oncogenic enzyme that regulates tumor cell apoptosis, proliferation and survival. SphK1 has been reported to promote the development of non‑small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), although the underlying mechanism remains to be determined. The aim of the present study was to examine the expression and function of SphK1 in NSCLC and to explore the underlying molecular mechanism. The results of the present study demonstrated that SphK1 expression was upregulated in NSCLC tissues and cell lines. Overexpression of SphK1 increased the proliferation and migration of NSCLC cells. Additionally, overexpression of SphK1 induced expression of antiapoptotic and migration‑associated genes, such as Bcl‑2, matrix metallopeptidase 2 and cyclin D1. Of note, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) was also activated in the SphK1‑overexpressing cells. By treatment with a STAT3 inhibitor, it was demonstrated that the SphK1‑induced changes in expression of target genes, as well as the increase in proliferation and migration of NSCLC cells were mediated by STAT3. In conclusion, the effects of SphK1 overexpression on the development of NSCLC were demonstrated to be mediated by the activation of STAT3. These results suggested that inhibition of the SphK1‑STAT3 axis may be a potential strategy for the treatment of NSCLC.

The burr influences the surface quality and the performance of the part. Nowadays, vibration-assisted drilling (VAD) is used to decrease the exit burr size. However, further analysis of the VAD burr formation mechanism is required. A mathematical burr prediction model of low-frequency VAD is proposed for the aluminum 7075-T6 alloy cutting. This model includes material deformation mechanisms, multi-region thrust force, and VAD kinematic characteristics. In the material deformation process of VAD, the Johnson-Cook model and fracture model are considered. The results indicate that the experimental burr height is consistent with the model prediction values, and the deviation is less than 8%. The average burr height of VAD decreases by 49.5 %–52.6 % compared with conventional drilling (CD). The parameter analysis shows that the vibration amplitude had the highest sensitivity to the burr height. In the Multivariate regression analysis (MRA), the regression coefficient sum of vibration-related parameters’ absolute values (0.676) approximates the sum of other parameters’ absolute values (0.817).

PurposeThis study examines a new type of corruption that has not previously been studied but that significantly affects the world. Traditionally, corruption has referred to individuals or organizations that bribe state officials. The author examines a phenomenon in which the briber is actually the government of a country that bribes the rest of the world in order to gain influence and propose a framework to explain it.Design/methodology/approachA multi-case qualitative method is used to compile and analyze evidences and develop my arguments. Specifically, the author compiles information on and analyzes the Confucius Institutes, the training of future foreign leaders, influencing the influencers, the Thousand Talents Plan, the Belt and Road Initiative and foreign aid.FindingsThe findings reveal the existence of state-sponsored bribery of the world.Social implicationsState-sponsored bribery is a threat to the world. Recognizing it is the first step to curb it. Reducing the bribery by China's state will benefit the world and China.Originality/valueState-sponsored bribery is originally defined and documented. A framework about the motivations and capabilities of state-sponsored bribery is proposed, the effects of and responses to such a bribery are reviewed, and policies to curb it are suggested.

PurposeAnswering the call to study important issues in the real world (Buckley et al., 2017; Delios, 2017; Phan, 2019), and motivated by the trade war between the US and China, the authors look beyond it to examine the more fundamental issues behind it. From a political economy perspective, the authors examine the interplay of government, society and firms in China to identify new phenomena that may impact business with, and research on, China.Design/methodology/approachA multi-case qualitative method is used to present and analyze evidence and develop our arguments. Specifically, we use scholarly sources, anecdotal evidence, reports, statistics and government documents and policies to support our arguments.FindingsAfter four decades of economic reform, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) controls every aspect of the society. Living, working and doing business are not a right but a privilege granted by the party. To a great degree, state-owned firms are business units/subsidiaries, and private/foreign firms are franchisees of the party, with the party leader being the CEO of China, Inc. The interplay between China and other countries is essentially a competition between a huge corporation and other states.Practical implicationsAt the firm level, our study suggests that for MNCs dealing with Chinese firms, they need to know that Chinese firms are units of China, Inc. Practitioners should take into account the long-term strategic goals of the CCP as well as business considerations when dealing with Chinese partners or competitors.Social implicationsAt the country level, our study shows that other countries dealing with China must be aware that they are dealing with a huge corporation.Originality/valueThat the CCP runs China as a corporation is a new perspective that will help the international community reexamine global competition.

It is increasingly accepted that early cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease results in considerable part from synaptic dysfunction caused by the accumulation of a range of oligomeric assemblies of amyloid β-protein (Aβ). Most studies have used synthetic Aβ peptides to explore the mechanisms of memory deficits in rodent models, but recent work suggests that Aβ assemblies isolated from human (AD) brain tissue are far more potent and disease-relevant. Although reductionist experiments show Aβ oligomers to impair synaptic plasticity and neuronal viability, the responsible mechanisms are only partly understood. Glutamatergic receptors, GABAergic receptors, nicotinic receptors, insulin receptors, the cellular prion protein, inflammatory mediators, and diverse signaling pathways have all been suggested. Studies using AD brain-derived soluble Aβ oligomers suggest that only certain bioactive forms (principally small, diffusible oligomers) can disrupt synaptic plasticity, including by binding to plasma membranes and changing excitatory-inhibitory balance, perturbing mGluR, PrP, and other neuronal surface proteins, down-regulating glutamate transporters, causing glutamate spillover, and activating extrasynaptic GluN2B-containing NMDA receptors. We synthesize these emerging data into a mechanistic hypothesis for synaptic failure in Alzheimer's disease that can be modified as new knowledge is added and specific therapeutics are developed.

Among transition metal phosphides, CoNiP was considered to be the most promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to replace the precious metal platinum for its excellent catalytic performance and durability. In this work, an approach combining impregnation with calcination and phosphorization was used to prepare highly dispersed CoNiP nanoparticles on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs). The CoNiP/NCNTs catalysts exhibited the advantages of low overpotential and high durability. The content of sodium hypophosphite as phosphorization agent was a crucial factor to affect the performance of the catalysts. The optimized CoNiP/NCNTs with an appropriate content of sodium hypophosphite exhibited best performance with an onset-overpotential of 44 mV and a overpotential of 75 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5M H2SO4. After the chronopotentiometry measurement for 24h, the overpotential presented a decrease of only 6 mV, indicating its excellent durability.

PURPOSE This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of levodopa as a therapeutic drug in the treatment of children and adults with amblyopia. METHODS We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis with randomized controlled trials of levodopa and placebo in the treatment of amblyopia. All data were identified and extracted from the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane libraries, and the Chinese knowledge resource integration database. RESULTS After screening the literature and evaluating the quality, 11 studies met the criteria from 308 studies. The mean difference of LogMAR visual acuity between levodopa and the placebo group was -0.1031 (95% confidence interval, -0.11 to -0.09; P < 0.0001). The improvement of visual acuities of the subgroup of younger patients with amblyopia was significantly higher than that of the placebo group (P < 0.0001). Increasing the dosage of levodopa and prolonging the treatment can significantly improve the curative effect. CONCLUSIONS Levodopa is effective in the treatment of amblyopia by prolonging the treatment, especially for young patients.

The electrolyte erosion on the surface of active electrode material is recognized as a critical factor affecting the electrochemical performance of LiNixCoyMn1 − x − yO2 cathode materials. In this study, a LiF-modified LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (LNMC811) cathode material was successfully constructed via wet chemical method by heating treatment. Electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy studies prove that a LiF coating layer (approximately 10 nm) is tightly wrapped on the LNMC811 surface. Consequently, the LiF-modified LNMC811 shows amazing rate capability and wonderful cycling retention, presenting 90% and 75% of the initial discharge capacity at 1 C and 2 C after 100 cycles, respectively, in contrast with 52% capacity retention for bare LNMC811. The wonderful electrochemical property of LNMC811@LiF is caused by the incorporation of the LiF layer which helps to inhibit the deleterious side reactions between the electrolyte and active materials.

'China, Inc.' enjoys the agility of a firm and the vast resources of a state. Meanwhile, foreign firms competing with Chinese firms can find themselves matched against the mighty Chinese state. The Rise of China, Inc. will interest many readers: it will compel business scholars to rethink state-firm relationships; assist multinational business practitioners in formulating effective strategies; aid policy-makers in countering China's expansion; and inform the public of the massive corporate organisation China has become, and how democracies can effectively deal with it.

This work reports a novel carrier flotation protocol for removing scaling cations from an oilfield produced water source which significantly reduces the collector consumption by employing natural minerals such as quartz, montmorillonite and talcum as the scaling cations carriers. The scaling cations uptake onto all carrier minerals exhibited homogeneous and monolayer adsorption, which was mainly dominated by physisorption. After adding oleate collector, the scaling cations removal rate was further enhanced, which was attributed to its high affinity with the scaling cations. Notably, the talcum flotation process simultaneously offered a high scaling cations removal rate (76.1%) and mineral recovery rate (98.3%), which achieved a sediment yield reduction of 72.2%. By summarizing the characterization results, the scaling cations removal mechanisms were also proposed. Moreover, high regeneration efficiencies (86.1% and 84.8% for quartz and talcum regeneration within three cycles) were achieved by the proposed regeneration protocol. This carrier flotation protocol with its low collector consumption offered technical promise for scaling cations removal from oilfield produced water. HIGHLIGHTS Novel carrier flotation protocol to remove scaling cations from produced water.; Outstanding scaling inhibition and carrier mineral recycle efficiencies simultaneously achieved.; Comprehensive removal mechanisms of scaling cations are explored.; Spent carrier minerals could be effectively regenerated.

To investigate the correlation and predictive value of serum matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) level with cognitive dysfunction and total imaging load in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD).A total of 80 patients with CSVD who were admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University between April 2019 and April 2020 were enrolled. All subjects underwent T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T2WI, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), diffusion weighted imaging (DWI), serum sample collection, and assessment of cognitive function at a specific time-point after admission. According to the results of the neuropsychological test, subjects were divided into cognitive dysfunction group (n=40) and normal cognitive function group (n=40). The total imaging load was estimated according to the neuroimaging findings. Serum MMP-9 level was measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Beside, serum MMP-9 level and total imaging load were compared between the two groups.Serum levels of MMP-9 and plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) were negatively correlated with cognitive function (P0.05). Serum MMP-9 level was found as a significant factor for diagnosing cognitive impairment due to CSVD (area under the curve (AUC), 0.756; sensitivity and specificity were 97.5% and 75.0%, respectively). THcy level was also found as significant factor for diagnosing cognitive impairment due to CSVD (area under the curve (AUC), 0.727; sensitivity and specificity were 97.5% and 75.0%, respectively).Serum MMP-9 level and tHcy level were significantly correlated with cognitive function in patients with CSVD. Serum MMP-9 level has a specific correlation with the total imaging load in patients with CSVD. It plays an important role in diagnosing cognitive impairment in patients with CSVD.

BACKGROUND: The physiological mechanisms which underlie amblyopia are predicted using animal models which assess the impact of amblyogenic factors on visual function. This study used monocular-deprived mice as an amblyopic model to assess visual function by flash visual evoked potentials (fVEP), behavioral assessment, and visual plasticity. METHODS: A total of 294 C57BL/6J mice (both genders) were used in this study. The mice were divided into the normal control (NC) group and monocular deprivation (MD) group. After mice were anesthetized with pentobarbital, fVEP was recorded. Long-term potentiation (LTP) was recorded from primary visual cortex slices. Behavioral assessment of visual function was performed using a visual water trapezoidal-shaped pool with a release chute, a hidden platform, and a middle divider. RESULTS: All fVEP results showed that N1 waves and P2 waves were repeatable and N1–P2 amplitude was the most stable indicator. The amplitude of N1–P2 of MD eyes was significantly lower than that of non-deprived eyes or NC eyes. LTP failed to be induced in the visual cortex V1 area corresponding to deprived eyes in the MD group but could be induced successfully in the visual cortex V1 area corresponding to non-deprived eyes in the MD group. Behavioral vision testing also showed a longer time to reach the platform in MD mice compared to NC mice. The correlation coefficient suggested that LTP is the better indicator for visual impairment. CONCLUSIONS: The fVEP can be utilized as an index of amblyopic changes in mice, which correlates well with behavioral results.

98. Association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and vitamin D dietary supplementation and risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among adults with hypertension

Abstract Background The relationship between vitamin D status and mortality among adults with hypertension remains unclear. Methods This prospective cohort study involved a sample of 19,500 adults with hypertension who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001 to 2018. We utilized a weighted COX proportional hazard model to assess the association between vitamin D status and mortality. This statistical model calculates hazard ratios (HR) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results The study indicated that lower serum 25(OH)D concentration was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality among individuals with hypertension. Specially. Those with concentrations between 25.0 and 49.9 nmol/L (HR = 1.71, 95%CI = 1.22–2.40) and less than 25.0 nmol/L (HR = 1.97, 95%CI = 1.15–3.39) had higher hazard ratios for all-cause mortality. Individuals with hypertension who took vitamin D supplements had a lower risk of all-cause mortality, but not the risk of CVD mortality (HR 0.75, 95%CI 0.54–1.03), compared to those who did not supplement (HR = 0.76, 95%CI = 0.61–0.94). Subgroup analysis further revealed that vitamin D supplementation was associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality among individuals without diabetes (HR = 0.65, 95%CI = 0.52–0.81) and individuals without CVD (HR = 0.75, 95%CI = 0.58–0.97), and a decreased risk of CVD mortality among individuals without diabetes (HR = 0.63, 95%CI = 0.45–0.88) and without CVD (HR = 0.61, 95%CI = 0.40–0.92). Furthermore, higher-dose vitamin D supplementation was also associated with a greater reduction in all-cause mortality among hypertensive individuals, and there was the potential synergistic effect of combining normal-dose calcium and vitamin D supplementation, showing a superior effect on mortality compared to low-dose supplementation in adults with hypertension. Conclusions This prospective cohort study demonstrated a significant association between lower serum 25 (OH)D concentration and increased all-cause mortality among adults with hypertension. Furthermore, the study found that vitamin D supplementation had a strong and significantly positive correlation with reduced all-cause and CVD mortality among hypertensive individuals without diabetes or CVD. This positive correlation suggests that vitamin D supplementation could potentially be an effective strategy to reduce the risk of mortality in this specific group of people.

Globally, the rise in the environmental awareness on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has spurred the development of carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies, including membrane separation. Among the membrane separation technologies, dual-phase carbonate membrane is feasible for post-combustion carbon capture given its high thermal and chemical stabilities at high temperatures. The integration of carbon capture and dry reforming of methane (DRM) in a catalytic dual-phase carbonate membrane reactor to function as a single device for syngas production is an emerging area of research. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review on the progress of the dual-phase carbonate membranes and membrane reactors in carbon capture and syngas production. The working mechanism and performance of three types of carbonate membranes in CO2 separation from various aspects (i.e., material selection, membrane configuration, modifications on the materials, and operating conditions) are thoroughly examined. Additionally, an overview of the reactions involved (i.e., DRM, steam reforming of methane (SRM), and partial oxidation of methane (POM)) and catalyst design (i.e., nickel-based supported with metal oxides and zeolites) is provided. A detailed comparison of the performance of the catalytic dual-phase ceramic-carbonate membrane reactor using different types of catalysts for syngas production is presented. Finally, the review is concluded with a discussion of the challenges, recommendations, and future insights on the development of dual-phase carbonate membranes and membrane reactors.
