We present the various science cases for building Band 1 receivers as part of ALMA's ongoing Development Program. We describe the new frequency range for Band 1 of 35-52 GHz, a range chosen to maximize the receiver suite's scientific impact. We first describe two key science drivers: 1) the evolution of grains in protoplanetary disks and debris disks, and 2) molecular gas in galaxies during the era of re-ionization. Studies of these topics with Band 1 receivers will significantly expand ALMA's Level 1 Science Goals. In addition, we describe a host of other exciting continuum and line science cases that require ALMA's high sensitivity and angular resolution. For example, ALMA Band 1 continuum data will probe the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect in galaxy clusters, Very Small Grains and spinning dust, ionized jets from young stars, spatial and flaring studies of Sgr A*, the acceleration sites of solar flares, pulsar wind nebulae, radio supernovae, and X-ray binaries. Furthermore, ALMA Band 1 line data will probe chemical differentiation in cloud cores, complex carbon chain molecules, extragalactic radio recombination lines, masers, magnetic fields through Zeeman effect measurements, molecular outflows from young stars, the co-evolution of star formation and active galactic nuclei, and the molecular content of galaxies at z ~ 3. ALMA provides similar to better sensitivities than the JVLA over 35-50 GHz, with differences increasing with frequency. ALMA's smaller antennas and shorter baselines, greater number of baselines, and single-dish capabilities, however, give it a significant edge for observing extended emission, making wide-field maps (mosaics), or attaining high image fidelity, as required by the described science cases., Comment: 74 pages; this document is a major revision of one posted previously as arXiv:0910.1609

We present a set of compelling science cases for the ALMA Band 1 receiver suite. For these cases, we assume in tandem the updated nominal Band 1 frequency range of 35-50 GHz with a likely extension up to 52 GHz; together these frequencies optimize the Band 1 science return. The scope of the science cases ranges from nearby stars to the re-ionization edge of the Universe. Two cases provide additional leverage on the present ALMA Level One Science Goals and are seen as particularly powerful motivations for building the Band 1 Receiver suite: (1) detailing the evolution of grains in protoplanetary disks, as a complement to the gas kinematics, requires continuum observations out to ~35 GHz (~9mm); and (2) detecting CO 3-2 line emission from galaxies like the Milky Way during the epoch of re-ionization, i.e., 6 < z < 10, also requires Band 1 receiver coverage. The range of Band 1 science is wide, however, and includes studies of very small dust grains in the ISM, pulsar wind nebulae, radio supernovae, X-ray binaries, the Galactic Center (i.e., Sgr A*), dense cloud cores, complex carbon-chain molecules, masers, magnetic fields in the dense ISM, jets and outflows from young stars, distant galaxies, and galaxy clusters (i.e., the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect). A comparison of ALMA and the Jansky VLA (JVLA) at the same frequencies of Band 1 finds similar sensitivity performance at 40-50 GHz, with a slight edge for ALMA at higher frequencies (e.g., within a factor of 2 for continuum observations). With its larger number of instantaneous baselines, however, ALMA Band 1data will have greater fidelity than those from the JVLA at similar frequencies., Comment: 62 pages, 16 figures

Context. Molecular clouds near the H II regions tend to harbor more luminous protostars. Aims. Our aim in this paper is to investigate whether or not radiation-driven implosion mechanism enhances luminosity of protostars near regions of high-ionizing fluxes. Methods. We performed numerical simulations to model collapse of cores exposed to UV radiation from O stars. We investigated dependence of mass loss rates on the initial density profiles of cores and variation of UV fluxes. We derived simple analytic estimates of accretion rates and final masses of protostars. Results. Radiation-driven implosion mechanism can increase accretion rates of protostars by 1-2 orders of magnitude. On the other hand, mass loss due to photo-evaporation is not large enough to have a significant impact on the luminosity. The increase of accretion rate makes luminosity 1-2 orders higher than those of protostars that form without external triggering. Conclusions. We observed the HH 211 jet in the submillimeter continuum and the CO(3-2) and SiO(8-7) transitions with the Submillimeter Array. The continuum source detected at the center of the outflow shows an elongated morphology, perpendicular to the direction of the outflow axis. The high-velocity emission of both molecules shows a knotty and highly collimated structure. The SiO(8-7) emission at the base of the outflow, close to the driving source, spans a wide range of velocities, from -20 up to 40 km s^{-1}. This suggests that a wide-angle wind may be the driving mechanism of the HH 211 outflow. For distances greater than 5" (1500 AU) from the driving source, emission from both transitions follows a Hubble-law behavior, with SiO(8-7) reaching higher velocities than CO(3-2), and being located upstream of the CO(3-2) knots. This indicates that the SiO(8-7) emission is likely tracing entrained gas very close to the primary jet, while the CO(3-2) is tracing less dense entrained gas. From the SiO(5-4) data of Hirano et al. we find that the SiO(8-7)/SiO(5-4) brightness temperature ratio along the jet decreases for knots far from the driving source. This is consistent with the density decreasing along the jet, from (3-10)x10^6 cm^{-3} at 500 AU to (0.8-4)x10^6 cm^{-3} at 5000 AU from the driving source., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. In January 2003, the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) detected about 1400 young stars during a 13.2 day observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). This paper studies a well-defined sample of 28 solar-mass COUP sources to characterize the magnetic activity of analogs of the young Sun and thereby to improve understanding of the effects of solar X-rays on the solar nebula during the era of planet formation. We find that active young Suns spend 70% of their time in a characteristic state with relatively constant flux and magnetically confined plasma with temperatures kT_2 = 2.1 * kT_1. During characteristic periods, the 0.5-8 keV X-ray luminosity is about 0.03% of the bolometric luminosity. One or two powerful flares per week with peak luminosities logL_x ~ 30-32 erg/s are typically superposed on this characteristic emission accompanied by heating of the hot plasma component from ~2.4 keV to ~7 keV at the flare peak. The energy distribution of flares superposed on the characteristic emission level follows the relationship dN/dE ~ E^-1.7. The flare rates are consistent with the production of sufficiently energetic protons to spawn a spallogenic origin of some important short-lived radionuclides found in ancient meteorites. The X-rays can ionize gas in the circumstellar disk at a rate of 6 10^-9 ionizations per second at 1 AU from the central star, orders of magnitude above cosmic ray ionization rates. The estimated energetic particle fluences are sufficient to a account for many isotopic anomalies observed in meteoritic inclusions., Comment: 49 pages, 12 figures. We have analyzed a number of intense X-ray flares observed in the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP), a 13 days observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Analysis of the flare decay allows to determine the size, peak density and magnetic field of the flaring structure. A total of 32 events (the most powerful 1% of COUP flares), have sufficient statistics for the analysis. A broad range of decay times (from 10 to 400 ks) are present in the sample. Peak flare temperatures are often very high, with half of the flares in the sample showing temperatures in excess of 100 MK. Significant sustained heating is present in the majority of the flares. The magnetic structures which are found, are in a number of cases very long, with semi-lengths up to 10^12 cm, implying the presence of magnetic fields of hundreds of G extending to comparable distance from the stellar photosphere. These very large sizes for the flaring structures ($ >> R_*) are not found in more evolved stars, where, almost invariably, the same type of analysis results in structures with L <= R_*. As the majority of young stars in the ONC are surrounded by disks, we speculate that the large magnetic structures which confine the flaring plasma are actually the same type of structures which channel the plasma in the magnetospheric accretion paradigm, connecting the star's photosphere with the accretion disk., Comment: Accepted to ApJS, COUP special issue

We present the result of a systematic search for the iron Kalpha fluorescent line at 6.4 keV among 1616 X-ray sources detected by ultra-deep Chandra observations of the Orion Nebula Cluster and the obscured Orion Molecular Cloud 1 population as part of the Chandra Orion Ultra-deep Project (COUP). Seven sources are identified to have an excess emission at 6.4 keV among 127 control sample sources with significant counts in the 6.0-9.0 keV band. These seven sources are young stellar objects (YSOs) characterized by intense flare-like flux variations, thermal spectra, and near-infrared (NIR) counterparts. The observed equivalent widths of the line cannot be attributed to the fluorescence by interstellar or circumstellar matter along the line of sight. The X-ray spectral fits and NIR colors of the 6.4 keV sources show that these sources have X-ray absorption of > 1x10^22 cm^(-2) and NIR excess emission, which is not expected when the fluorescence occurs at the stellar photosphere. We therefore conclude that the iron fluorescent line of YSOs arises from reflection off of circumstellar disks, which are irradiated by the hard X-ray continuum emission of magnetic reconnection flares., Comment: 11 pages, 6 postscript figures, accepted for publication in ApJS. In order to compare the x-wind with observations, one needs to be able to calculate its thermal and ionization properties. We formulate the physical basis for the streamline-by-streamline integration of the ionization and heat equations of the steady x-wind. In addition to the well-known processes associated with the interaction of stellar and accretion-funnel hot-spot radiation with the wind, we include X-ray heating and ionization, mechanical heating, and a revised calculation of ambipolar diffusion heating. The mechanical heating arises from fluctuations produced by star-disk interactions of the time dependent x-wind that are carried by the wind to large distances where they are dissipated in shocks, MHD waves, and turbulent cascades. We model the time-averaged heating by the scale-free volumetric heating rate, $\Gamma_{\rm mech} = \alpha \rho v^3 s^{-1}$, where $\rho$ and $v$ are the local mass density and wind speed, respectively, $s$ is the distance from the origin, and $\alpha$ is a phenomenological constant. When we consider a partially-revealed but active young stellar object, we find that choosing $\alpha \sim 10^{-3}$ in our numerical calculations produces temperatures and electron fractions that are high enough for the x-wind jet to radiate in the optical forbidden lines at the level and on the spatial scales that are observed.
