Research suggests that having a sexual growth mindset (SGM), or believing that a person can become a better sexual partner over time, may improve sexual relationships. The present research investigated the impact of SGMs on a new sexual outcome: sexual rejection sensitivity. In Study 1, adults in romantic relationships completed measures of SGM and sexual rejection sensitivity from their own and from their partner’s perspective ( N = 377; 49.9% women; M age = 29.1 years, SD age = 12.2 years). Findings show that perceived partner, but not own, SGM is associated with lower sexual rejection sensitivity, and sexual rejection sensitivity mediated the link between perceived partner SGM and own sexual satisfaction. In Study 2, we replaced perceived partner SGM with actual partner SGM by recruiting both members of 104 different-sex romantic couples ( M age = 43.9 years, SD age = 14.5 years). Study 2 finds that partner, but not own, SGM was negatively associated with sexual rejection sensitivity. Further, sexual rejection sensitivity was negatively associated with sexual satisfaction in Study 1 and for women in Study 2. This work demonstrates the importance of sexual partners’ implicit beliefs about sexuality (perceived or reported) in understanding sexual outcomes.

Objectives Early sexual initiation is known to be associated with deleterious health outcomes. The objective of this study was to evaluate factors (bullying, weight status, smoking and alcohol consumption, peer influence, relations with parents) associated with the initiation of sexual intercourse among Lebanese adolescents in schools. Methods A retrospective cohort was formed using a convenient sampling of Lebanese students (n=1635) in private schools from Beirut and Mount Lebanon. Results Younger age of adolescents at first sexual intercourse was significantly associated with finding it very easy to talk about things that worry them with an older brother, having a best friend who drinks sometimes compared to no drinking, and a best friend who smokes sometimes or every day compared to not smoking. Moreover, older age at the first sexual relationship was significantly associated with female gender (HRa=0.25), as was older age at first time drinking alcohol, first time getting drunk, and smoking cigarettes. Conclusion This study sheds light on some of the factors associated with age at first sexual intercourse in Lebanese adolescents.

Sexual health is critical to overall well-being, yet it is challenging and uncomfortable to discuss. Individuals frequently encounter uncertainty about their sexual health as they experience bodily changes, navigate romantic or sexual relationships, and explore their identities. In this study, we called on uncertainty management theory to guide an investigation of sexual health uncertainty. Specifically, we asked how people use social support to manage their sexual health uncertainty in online forums. Grounded theory analyses revealed that negative emotions, avoidance, and pursuing medical care prompted people to seek emotional and informational support online, and support served three functions: integrating information, assessing risk, and strategizing communication. The results point to stigma as a driving force in sexual health discussions online and imply practical recommendations for sexual education, communication about sexual topics, and patient-provider relationships.

Ce mémoire porte sur l’impureté dans la religion grecque et plus particulièrement sur le miasme causé par des évènements relevant de la vie intime. L’objectif de cette étude est de dresser un portrait complet de la vie intime par l’analyse des inscriptions religieuses et des documents littéraires. L’analyse de ces sources permet de dégager les modalités d’accès au temple et les processus purificatoires nécessaires pour recouvrer son état de pureté. De cet objectif en découle un second : formuler une théorie explicative sur l’origine de l’impureté en Grèce ancienne qui s’éloigne des théories interprétatives traditionnelles en misant davantage sur l’apport des sciences cognitives et la psychologie sociale à cette question. Divisée en quatre chapitres, la recherche porte d’abord sur l’impureté liée aux menstruations, un évènement profondément intime et peu étudié en raison de tabous modernes persistants. Le deuxième chapitre s’attarde quant à lui à l’impureté des relations sexuelles. Plus spécifiquement, cette deuxième section analyse les différences entre le miasme causé par des relations entre époux et par des relations extraconjugales. Le troisième chapitre du mémoire porte sur les évènements liés à la maternité, soit l’accouchement, l’avortement, la fausse-couche et l’allaitement. La mise en juxtaposition de plusieurs cas d’impureté permet de relever certaines tendances ou similarités. Finalement, le quatrième chapitre de cette étude consiste en l’exploration des théories biologiques et cognitives pouvant expliquer l’origine de l’impureté en Grèce ancienne. Cet ultime chapitre permet de conclure que l’impureté relève en partie de processus cognitifs et de réflexes qui ont été socialement renforcés par la religion grecque., This master’s thesis concern impurity in Greek religion and more specifically the miasma related to the intimate life. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive portrait of intimate life through the analysis of religious inscriptions and literary documents. The examination of these sources allow the identification of the modalities for entering the temple and the processes necessary to regain its state of purity. This first objective leads to a second: I aim to formulate an explanatory theory on the origin of impurity in ancient Greece that departs from the traditional and interpretative theories by taking into account the contribution of cognitive science and social psychology to this question. Divided into four chapters, the research first focuses on the impurity of menstruation, a deeply intimate event and little studied due to persistent modern taboos. The second chapter dwells on the impurity of sexual relations. More specifically, this second section analyzes the differences between the miasma caused by relationships between spouses and by extramarital relationships. The third chapter deals with events related to motherhood, namely childbirth, abortion, miscarriage and breastfeeding. The juxtaposition of several types of impurity allow the identification of certain trends or similarities. Finally, the fourth chapter consists of the exploration of the biological and cognitive theories that could explain the origin of impurity in Ancient Greece. This final chapter seek to conclude that impurity is partly due to cognitive processes and reflexes which have been socially reinforced by the Greek religion.

In this study we explored how the amount of kissing during the most recent sexual experience (specific kissing) and amount of kissing during the last year (global kissing) were both associated with the quality of the sexual relationship and overall relationship satisfaction and dissatisfaction. To understand these associations, we obtained surveys from a national sample of 878 participants who had been in a romantic relationship for at least two years. We evaluated their results through a structural equation model and found that for women the rates of specific kissing were associated with their ability to orgasm, sexual frequency, and indirectly to sexual satisfaction. For both men and women, measures of global kissing were associated with both sexual and relationship satisfaction but more strongly with measures of sexual and relationship dissatisfaction. These findings suggest that measures of kissing could be used as a bellwether of both the quality of the sexual relationship for women and of feelings of dissatisfaction about both the sexual and overall relationship for both sexes.

Two studies examined the proposal that implicit and explicit sexual motives are associated with the experience of pleasure in sexual situations, as well as with seeking out sexual pleasure. In Study 1, implicit and explicit motive scores of 145 heterosexually identified women and 152 heterosexually identified men were demonstrated to be independently associated with the experience of pleasure in response to videos of female–male sexual behavior, more consistently so for women than men. The implicit and explicit motive scales were also associated with the frequency of viewing erotic materials in daily life. The experience of pleasure within sexual relationships was additionally shown to be associated with sexual motives, although primarily implicit motives. In Study 2 involving 139 women and 65 men, implicit motive scales were associated with ratings of interest in a potential romantic partner. The results support the conceptualization of the two instruments as measures of sexual motivation. The difference between implicit versus explicit measures in the pattern of correlations involving acquainted versus non-acquainted individuals is consistent with research on ideal partner preference.

This study focused on heterosexual men’s attitudes and behaviors related to discussion of sexuality. Exploration of men’s discussion of sexuality is important because talking about sex can contribute to sexual subjectivity and build intimacy in sexual relationships. Comfort talking about sex, particularly with women partners, can also enhance communication regarding sexual issues. Heterosexually-identifying U.S. resident men (N = 742), ages 18–49, participated in an online study. Men answered questions about how often they discuss sex, who they discuss sex with, and their comfort level talking about sex. Findings indicated that men ages 18–29 discussed sex more often with other men than men ages 30–49. Also, men who are dating or engaged are significantly more likely to talk with both men and women about sex than men who are not in a relationship. These findings highlight that age and relationship status impact discussion of sexuality.

Sexual assertiveness is one of the main issues in the sexual relationships between couples. Since substance dependence might disrupt this relationship, the present cross-sectional study was conducted to assess and compare sexual assertiveness in women with and without substance-dependent partners living in Tehran, Iran. To assess sexual assertiveness, the Hurlbert Index of Sexual Assertiveness was used. The data then were compared between the study samples. Logistic regression analysis was performed. In all 300 women with and without substance-dependent partners entered into the study. The mean age of women was 37.31 ± 8.79 and 32.70 ± 7.24 years respectively. Infidelity is associated with negative effects on couples' relationships, yet some couples are able to overcome these and rebuild their relationship. Few studies have examined this process for couples who stay together after an affair. With a sample of 18 individuals (nine couples), this study explored similarities and differences between injured (i.e., partner who did not have the affair) and involved (i.e., partner who had the affair) partners' experiences across three categories of affair recovery: (a) commitment to the relationship, (b) dimensions of the attachment bond, and (c) healing process. Thematic analysis revealed similarities amongst both partners across categories: (a) frequent and quality communication, (b) mechanisms for rebuilding safety and trust, and (c) the importance of forgiveness. However, partners' experiences varied regarding (a) responses to needs for comfort, (b) their sexual relationship, and (c) responding to reminders. A discussion of these key findings and clinical implications are included.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar como a temática sexualidade é abordada nas escolas pelos professores de biologia do ensino médio. A pesquisa foi realizada com dez professores. A natureza da pesquisa foi qualitativa. Os resultados encontrados mostram que os professores, apesar dos obstáculos que dificultam a abordagem de temas relacionados à sexualidade, sabem da importância e necessidade de se debater essa temática com os estudantes, no entanto necessitam de recursos que os auxilie em suas práticas. Os resultados nos permitiram constatar, ainda, que a educação sexual é uma necessidade e, na opinião dos docentes, diz respeito a todos os professores, não devendo ser restrita aos docentes de biologia.

During the last couple of centuries, the English law dealing with sexual conduct has made a decisive shift towards a ‘consent-based model’ of rape law. But strikingly, deceptive sexual relationships (DSR) have been untouched by this development as lately reaffirmed by the Court of Appeal in R v Jason Lawrence. If rape is defined as sex without consent, then DSR ought to be no exception, because the general proposition of law is that consent induced by deception is no consent at all. In making a case for the criminalisation of DSR, this article (1) arrays the lack of uniformity in court’s jurisprudence on DSR and (2) brings along the sexual autonomy theory to support its case.

Because of the high rates of sexual assault on college campuses, it is important to examine factors that influence perceptions of healthy relationships and consent, including social media. Because college students are heavy users of social media, it is imperative to consider how social media can influence their participation in risky behavior, including the attitudes and norms around sex and relationships. Participants: Undergraduate college students were recruited to participate in a study that sought to understand how college students navigate romantic and sexual relationships. Methods: Participants (N = 392) completed a survey that assessed social media use, and how they perceived healthy relationship behavior and consent. Results: Results showed social media had more of an influence on perceptions of healthy relationships. However, the influence of social media on consent and healthy relationships is inconsistent across platforms; emphasizing the need for further research.

Chemsex involves mental and sexual health risks for users, which generate specific needs in primary care. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of the general practitioner (GP) in the identification of disorders and first aid offered to MSM chemsex users (CUs). Data were collected with a self-administered questionnaire offered to MSM patients consulting in six Parisian STI clinics. The primary endpoint was the number of GP visits reported by patients in the past 12 months between CUs and control. Three hundred sixty-four MSMs were included between October and December of 2018: 94 CUs (25.9%) and 270 control. The Transitions Catalyst Model suggests increased drinking during young adulthood is due to the notion that alcohol facilitates friendships and romantic/sexual relationships during a developmental period when these relationships are highly valued. However, little research has tested the utility of this model. We examined (1) whether young adults reported greater drinking and related consequences on months when friendships were more important to them or when they were dating casually, and (2) the extent to which social drinking motives explain these associations on a given month. Data were drawn from 752 young adults (ages 18–23 at screening) living in the Seattle, WA area (56.4% female). For 24 consecutive months, surveys assessed past month alcohol use and consequences, social drinking motives, friendship importance, and dating/relationship status. Bayesian multilevel models were conducted, adjusting for time-fixed and time-varying covariates. Analyses included 11,591 monthly observations. Between-persons, greater average friendship importance was associated with greater drinking. On months when participants reported greater friendship importance than their own average, they reported greater drinking and alcohol consequences. Those who reported more months of casual dating reported greater drinking and consequences on average. Relative to casual dating months, participants reported less drinking during months they were single or in a relationship and fewer consequences during months in a relationship. Associations were partially accounted for by social motives. Findings support the Transitions Catalyst Model. Effective strategies for reducing drinking and associated risks among young adults include brief interventions focused on how social drinking motives and relationships relate to drinking decisions.

In this paper the presence of the love seafaring topos in Flores de poetas ilustres de Espana (1605) is surveyed. Up to 15 poems in the anthology develop the topos. It works as a contract of intertextuality (pointing to Petrarchan poetry), and as an identifier of the programmatic nature of the collection.
