SummaryRab6 is a conserved small GTPase that localizes to the Golgi apparatus and cytoplasmic vesicles and controls transport and fusion of secretory carriers [1]. Another Rab implicated in trafficking from the trans-Golgi to the plasma membrane is Rab8 [2–5]. Here we show that Rab8A stably associates with exocytotic vesicles in a Rab6-dependent manner. Rab8A function is not needed for budding or motility of exocytotic carriers but is required for their docking and fusion. These processes also depend on the Rab6-interacting cortical factor ELKS [1], suggesting that Rab8A and ELKS act in the same pathway. We show that Rab8A and ELKS can be linked by MICAL3, a member of the MICAL family of flavoprotein monooxygenases [6]. Expression of a MICAL3 mutant with an inactive monooxygenase domain resulted in a strong accumulation of secretory vesicles that were docked at the cell cortex but failed to fuse with the plasma membrane, an effect that correlated with the strongly reduced mobility of MICAL3. We propose that the monooxygenase activity of MICAL3 is required to regulate its own turnover and the concomitant remodeling of vesicle-docking protein complexes in which it is engaged. Taken together, the results of our study illustrate cooperation of two Rab proteins in constitutive exocytosis and implicates a redox enzyme in this process.

A presente tese de doutoramento tem como objecto de análise o panorama geral acerca da interpretação do conflito que culminou com o processo de paz final em Angola, em 4 de Abril de 2002, enfatizando seus antecedentes e desdobramentos. O conflito será analisado sob quatro concepções diferentes e, em simultâneo, complexas e interligadas: a luta pela independência nacional, o conflito regional, o contexto inicial da Guerra Fria e o conflito propriamente interno que se lhe seguiu. O todo da dinâmica relacional que resultou dessas interacções em curso é encarado, ao longo do texto, como crescentemente inscrito no quadro maior de uma política externa angolana que foi emergindo com cada vez maior autonomia no seu enraizamento. O ponto focal deste trabalho mantém-se sempre nesse processo de emergência. Com isso, buscar-se-á identificar em que direcção essas pesquisas apontam, ou seja, para a questão do apuramento quanto a se existe uma predominância de alguma das linhas de análise, ou ainda, se há junção das quatro linhas analíticas acima identificadas como geradoras de uma explicação evolutiva do que foi o conflito que nos trouxe a Angola que conhecemos. The present doctoral thesis aims to analyse and emphasize the antecedents and consequences of the general environment regarding the interpretation of the conflict that led to Angola’s final peace process, on April 4, 2002. The conflict will be analysed under four different, as well as simultaneously complex and interrelated conceptions: the national independence struggle; the regional conflict; its initial cold war context; and the internal conflict in itself which followed. The whole of the relational dynamics resulting from their interactions involved are examined, throughout the text, as increasingly inscribed in the wider framework of an Angolan foreign policy which emerged as ever more autonomous in its rooting. The focus of this work is always placed on this process of emergence. The present work will seek to identify which direction present research efforts point to, namely whether there are predominant analytical trends or if, instead, the four analytical strands here identified are aligned and generate an evolutionary explanation to what the conflict which brought about the Angola we know stood for.

Tese de Doutoramento em Ciências Sociais, na especialidade de Ciência Política A investigação visa apresentar um novo modelo e processo de partilha do poder no Enclave angolano de Cabinda, que poderá contribuir para conferir um acréscimo de sustentação teórica e de rigor metodológico ao processo instituído pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 1/07, de 02 de Janeiro de Conselho de Ministros, que aprova o Estatuto Especial para a Província de Cabinda (EEC), resultado da Resolução no 27-B/06, de 16 de Agosto da Assembleia Nacional, que estabelece o Memorando de Entendimento para a Paz e Reconciliação na Província de Cabinda (MEPRC). Para isso, começa por identificar, entender e explicar as motivações e as causas de convivência menos saudável entre Luanda e Cabinda, o conhecimento da sociedade cabindesa e as possíveis redes de poder nela existentes. Depois, analisa os procedimentos aplicados no modelo do EEC, e em conhecidos modelos de regulação, contenção e gestão de conflitos político-identitários internos. A partir da articulação lógica daqueles conceitos e procedimentos, com recurso à imaginação criativa e a alguns casos paradigmáticos de uma arrumação contemporânea de relações, factos e processos sócio-culturais, históricos e políticos, foi concebido um modelo original de partilha do poder no Enclave de Cabinda. O desenvolvimento do modelo proposto tem por base o estudo e a análise das estratégias mais comuns e modelos paradigmáticos frequentemente recorridos pelos Estados nos cenários contemporâneos para a prevenção e resolução de conflitos internos, secessionistas, político-identitários ou sócio-culturais, desde as federações e arranjos territoriais das populações, os modelos democráticos, da divisão do espaço e do território à partilha de poder e ao pluralismo. ABSTRACT This research aims to bring forth a new approach and process of power-sharing over the Angolan Enclave of Cabinda, which may contribute to add theoretical arguing and methodology systematization to the process institutionalized by the Decree-Law No. 1/07, of January 2nd, of Ministry Council, that adopted the Especial Status of the Cabinda Province (EEC), in result to the Resolution 27-B/06, of August 16th, of National Assembly, establishing the Memorandum of Understanding for Peace and Reconciliation in Cabinda Province (MEPRC). To reach the above proposal, the research starts by identifying, understanding and explaining the motivations and causes of a less healthy relationship between Luanda and Cabinda, the knowledge of the Cabinda Society and possible networks of power that exist within it. After, the research analysis the processes applied to the model of EEC, based on known models of regulation, containment and management of internal political-identity conflicts. By articulating those concepts and processes, resorting to creative imagination and to some pragmatic cases of contemporary relations arranging, facts and sociocultural processes, historic and political, was designed an original model of power-sharing on the Enclave of Cabinda. The development of the proposed model is based on the analyses of common strategies and paradigmatic models usually applied by States in contemporary settings to prevent internal conflict and resolutions, secessionists, political-identity or sociocultural, from federations and territorial arrangement of populations, democratic models, of space division and territory to power-sharing and pluralism.
