Sports performance, although depending on individuais'characteristics,also reflects the way coach-athlete relationship takes place in the sport preparation process. Social psychology of sport has developed the study of the interaction processes between those actors,aiming at having a better understanding of them and at having a conceptual basis to propose the management of that relationship in order to make it more productive in terms of social and sport dynamics. International research has been following difterent approaches in the study of this subject: (1) the social-emotional approach has been pointing out to the emotional component resulting from the interaction between coach and athlete, which may have both positive, or negative effects on the athlete's adapting behaviours, as well as on the affective balance of the dyad. Empirical research on satisfaction, drop out, self-esteem or self-efficacy are some examples of research topics in this field, as well as those produced within the scope of analytical psychology models; (2) the organisational approach takes into account the concept that sport teams are organisations that despite having specific characteristics, can be studied according to the models of organisational psychology. Thus, the relationship coach-athlete is studied under the leader-member perspective. Chelladurai's Multidimensional Model of Leadership in Sport considers the antecedents and consequences of leader's intervention, as well as the behaviours developed by him/her. It has been the most productive model regarding international research; (3) the behavioural approach has been investigating the coach's concrete behaviours in training or competition by means of observational methodologies, inspired by Smoll's & Smith's Mediational Model, which classifies the coach's behaviours in interactional categories. Therefore, the coach will be able to evaluate his/her effect upon the athlete and to introduce the needed changes in his/her behaviour. This article discusses these models referring to the main results in international research and also presents a model of coach's anxiogenic behaviours in the context of the sport training process.

La psicología del deporte evolucionó internacionalmente a partir de las necesidades sentidas en el mundo del deporte. A pesar de que podemos situar algunos orígenes remotos de esta área científica relacionados con el laboratorio de Wundt en Leipzig, como afirma Jaume Cruz Feliu (1997; 1991), la psicología académica no habría reconocido inicialmente valor al deporte que justificara integrarlo en su objeto de estudio. Por esta razón, fueron los centros de educación física y deporte los que llevaron a cabo los primeros trabajos de investigación sobre los factores psicológicos de la actividad física. Feige (1977), en un interesante artículo sobre la evolución de la psicología del deporte, sitúa a los finales del siglo XIX los trabajos pioneros de esta área científica que tuvieron lugar en los Estados Unidos y Alemania. Las cuestiones de aprendizaje motor surgieron naturalmente entre las preocupaciones iniciales de los investigadores de los centros de deporte que así pretendían profundizar su conocimiento sobre el comportamiento motor. Los primeros anos del siglo XX se centraron en la preocupación de ligar la teoría a la practica a través, sobretodo, de las investigaciones llevadas a cabo en los EEUU, Unión Soviética y Alemania que incidían sobre

A literatura refere que os métodos convencionais de otimização do desempenho demonstram uma eficácia reduzida, pelo que estratégias alternativas devem ser consideradas (Gardner & Moore, 2006, 2012; Palmi, & Planas, 2018; Solé, Carraça, Serpa, & Palmi, 2014). O estudo do mindfulness e compaixão tem sido alvo de um crescente interesse no domínio da Psicologia. A prática que se tornou o foco da tradição budista há 2.600 anos, tornou-se parte da Psicologia contemporânea e da investigação, sobretudo na área da redução de stress realizados na década de 70. Mais recentemente, a abordagem focada na flexibilidade psicológica, considerada uma das abordagens de "terceira geração" nas intervenções cognitivo-comportamentais, foi incluída nessa abordagem. Embora os estudos ligados ao treino de competências psicológicas convencionais tenham mostrado resultados positivos, mas também inconsistentes no desempenho atlético, as intervenções baseadas no mindfulness (Gardner, 2016; Kaufman, Glass, & Pineau, 2018) emergiram recentemente como uma ferramenta potencialmente benéfica para melhorar o desempenho dos atletas de elite. Deste modo a combinação da prática de Redução de Stress Baseado no Mindfulness, (Kabat-Zinn, 2003) com as intervenções focadas na compaixão e flexibilidade psicológica oferecem alternativas, baseadas na evidência, que promovem a melhoria do desempenho desportivo, e a prevenção de lesões em alta competição (Birrer, Rothlin, & Morgan, 2012; Solé, Carraça, Serpa, & Palmi, 2014). Neste sentido, a presente tese de Doutoramento tem como objetivo principal adaptar e avaliar a eficácia de um Programa Baseado no Mindfulness em Jogadores de Futebol (MBSoccerP). Adicionalmente pretendeu-se estudar os atributos que estão envolvidos no desempenho de alta competição, especialmente nas modalidades coletivas, de forma a determinar se as estratégias baseadas no mindfulness, flexibilidade psicológica e auto compaixão promovem estados de desempenho ótimo, redução de sintomas psicopatológicos (ansiedade) e menor supressão do pensamento. Desta forma, realizaram-se os seguintes estudos: iv Estudo 1: Otimização da Performance em Atletas de Elite: As Intervenções Baseadas no Mindfulness. O objetivo desta revisão foi sintetizar os resultados empíricos que retratam a eficácia dos programas baseados no mindfulness na optimização da performance em atletas de elite. Para a realização deste estudo, efetuou-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica de artigos originais publicados entre 1985 e março de 2017, recorrendo às bases de dados Medline, Psych info, Web of Science, Cochrane, Ebscohost, Isi Web of Knowledge. A pesquisa focou-se nas intervenções baseadas no mindfulness, performance desportiva, atletas de elite e, por último, nas diferentes combinações de conceitos. Todos os artigos foram reunidos tendo em conta o design, tipo de controlo, população, instrumentos e resultados. No total, foram selecionados 26 artigos condicentes com os critérios metodológicos do presente estudo, verificando-se maioritariamente a implementação dos programas MSPE e MAC no campo da Psicologia da performance desportiva. Os resultados evidenciam que os programas MAC e MSPE são eficazes na otimização do desempenho desportivo de elite. Conclui-se que, os programas baseados no mindfulness são um fator importante na otimização da performance em alta competição. Estudo 2: Mindfulness and Compassion Strategies on Elite Soccer: Conceptualization of Mindfulness-Based Soccer Program (MBSoccerP) Com o objetivo de complementar o primeiro estudo, desenhou-se um programa baseado no Mindfulness (MBSoccerP) para otimizar o desempenho desportivo, tendo por base a evidencia científica existente nesta área no contexto desportivo. O programa MBSoccerP será descrito de forma exaustiva e detalhada no capitulo 3 da presente tese. A conceptualização metodológica do estudo foi realizada com base em publicações científicas das bases de dados PUBMED, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Cochrane e ISI-Web of Science pesquisadas de 1985 a 2018 e com diferentes termos de pesquisa. Os resultados do estudo obtidos sugeriram a elaboração e implementação do programa MBSoccerP em atletas de futebol para testar a sua eficácia nos contributos intercorrentes (mindfluness, compaixão, flexibilidade psicológica) para melhorias integradas no desempenho desportivo. v Estudo 3: Programa baseado no Mindfulness para Futebol Profissional (MBSoccerP): estudo de eficácia em Atletas de Elite O objetivo deste estudo foi examinar a eficácia de um programa de mindfulness em atletas de futebol de elite - 2ª liga (MBSoccerP). Num plano quase-experimental com grupo de intervenção mindfulness (n = 28) e grupo de controlo (n = 29), foi testado o impacto do programa MBSoccerP e decorrentes relações e mecanismos de mudança. Os dados foram analisados recorrendo a t-student, correlações e a análises de covariância, para examinar possíveis efeitos e relações entre as variáveis antes e depois da intervenção MBSoccerP. Os resultados do estudo principal, a análise da covariância (medidas repetidas), indicaram que o grupo de intervenção (M = 25.68, SD = 3.42) melhorou significativamente nas subescalas Mindfulness_Agir Consciente, Mindfulness_ Não Reagir; nas subescalas Autocompaixão_Mindfulness, Autobondade e Condição Humana; na escala de Flow Disposicional, e no desempenho desportivo global dos atletas pela Ficha de Avaliação de Indicadores da Performance-Versões Atleta/Treinador. Verificou-se ainda a diminuição na subescala_ansiedade do Inventário Breve de Sintomas Psicopatológicos e na inflexibilidade psicológica, por comparação com o grupo de controlo. Os resultados sugerem que o MBSoccerP pode ser efetivo na otimização do desempenho, mindfulness, autocompaixão, flexibilidade psicológica e estado de flow. Estudo 4: Estudo piloto de um programa baseado no Mindfulness (MBSoccerP): O papel do mindfulness, autocompaixão e flexibilidade psicológica no estado de flow e desempenho desportivo em atletas de futebol de elite Neste estudo piloto procurou-se explorar os efeitos de um programa baseado no Mindfulness (MBSoccerP) numa amostra de 57 atletas profissionais de futebol. Testes t e correlações foram realizadas para examinar possíveis efeitos e relações entre as variáveis antes e depois da intervenção MBSoccerP. A regressão hierárquica também foi utilizada para avaliar a influência da flexibilidade psicológica, autocompaixão, e facetas de mindfulness nas medidas de desempenho desportivo e flow. Os resultados indicaram que as facetas mindfulness, a autocompaixão, a performance e o flow melhoraram do pré para a pós-teste, diminuindo o evitamento experiencial. Além disso, as facetas mindfulness foram preditoras de vi maior flow disposicional no pós-teste. A inflexibilidade psicológica foi preditor de um menor flow disposicional no pós-teste. Os resultados sugerem que o MBSoccerP pode ser eficaz na otimização do flow disposicional e desempenho desportivo. Estudo 5: O Treino Mindfulness e Compaixão no futebol profissional: efeitos, papéis e associações no flow, sintomas psicológicos e supressão de pensamento. O presente estudo explorou as relações entre autocompaixão, mindfulness, flexibilidade psicológica e índice de sintomas psicológicos (incluindo a ansiedade), supressão de pensamento e flow, através da implementação de treino mental focado no mindfulness, compaixão, e flexibilidade psicológica (MBPSoccerP) em atletas de futebol. Estudamos também a influência das facetas mindfulness, da flexibilidade psicológica, autocompaixão nas medidas de sofrimento psicológico, ansiedade, flow e supressão do pensamento. Num design quase experimental efetuou-se um estudo pré-pós teste, analisado com a estatística testes t emparelhados, correlações de Pearson e análise de regressão, realizadas numa amostra não clínica de jogadores de futebol - 2ª liga portuguesa (n = 57; M = 25,79 anos, DP = 3,3) Verificou-se que a autocompaixão, o mindfulness e a flexibilidade psicológica apresentaram uma associação negativa com o índice geral de sintomas psicológicos (incluindo ansiedade) e a supressão do pensamento, e uma associação positiva ao estado de flow disposicional. Estes resultados suportam que, a autocompaixão, o mindfulness e a flexibilidade psicológica explicaram a variação encontrada no índice geral de sintomas psicológicos (incluindo ansiedade), supressão de pensamentos e flow disposicional. Os resultados sugerem que as facetas mindfulness, a autocompaixão e o desenvolvimento da flexibilidade psicológica podem ser benéficos no cultivo de experiências desportivas mais positivas, mediando com maior frequência o estado de flow e diminuindo sofrimento psicológico e as preocupações ruminativas. Deste modo, e no seu cômpito geral, os resultados sugerem que o programa MBSoccerP pode ser efetivo na otimização do desempenho, nos traços mindfulness, na melhoria da autocompaixão, no aumento da flexibilidade psicológica e estado de flow. Contudo implicações práticas, assim como limitações e direções para futuras investigações são também enumeradas e debatidas nesta tese. Literature suggests that conventional methods of performance optimization demonstrate reduced effectiveness, so alternative strategies must be considered (Gardner & Moore, 2006; Neff & Germer, 2013; Mosewich, Crocker, & Kowalski, 2013; Palmi & Planas, 2018; Solé, Carraça, Serpa, & Palmi, 2014). However, psychology has increasingly become interested in the study and training of mindfulness and compassion. Mindfulness practice has deep roots in Buddhist tradition. More than 2,600 years ago, and in the late 1970s that mindfulness began to be studied by Psychology and reserach, specially, in stress reduction. More recently, So-called ’third wave’ cognitive and behavioural therapies represents a new generation of psychological therapies that are increasingly being used in the treatment of several difficulties and psychological problems and also foucus on the interplay of minfulness, compassion and psychological flexibility, namely the ACT Model. The importance of psychological skills training (PST) in the development of athletic performance is widely recognized. Therefore, Psychological skills are posited as effective for attaining optimal athletic performance, and the benefit of PST is widely reported. Although considerable scientific evidence is available regarding the efficacy of traditional psychological performance􀀀enhancement methods, some authors claim that sport psychology interventions have not been critically examined, and most studies investigating the efficacy of PST do not meet the criteria for evidence􀀀based empirical support. Hence, Recently, interest in mindfulness-based interventions has increased in sport psychology as a way to improve the performance of elite athletes (Gardner, 2016; Kabat-Zinn, 2003; Kaufman, Glass, & Pineau, 2018) Therefore the combination of MBSR practice (Kabat-Zinn, 2003) with interventions focused on compassion and psychological flexibility, offer evidence-based alternatives that promote performance improved and sport injuries prevention in high performance context (Birrer, Rothlin, & Morgan, 2012; Solé, Carraça, Serpa, & Palmi, 2014; Gardner, 2016, Kaufman, Glass, & Pineau, 2018; Moghadam, 2013; Mosewich, Crocker, & Kowalski, 2013). viii Hence, this Ph.D. thesis shows as main objective to adapt and evaluate the effectiveness of a mindfulness based program (MBSoccerP) in sport context. Additionally, it was intended to study the attributes that are involved in the performance of high competition, especially in team sports, in order to understand if strategies based on mindfulness, psychological flexibility and compassion promote optimal performance states, reduction of psychopathological symptoms (anxiety) and though suppression. Hence, a first literature review was conducted with the purpose of synthesizing the empirical results that portray the effectiveness of mindfulness-based programs in performance optimization in elite athletes. 1st study: Enhance Sport Performance of Elite Athletes: The Mindfulness-Based Interventions The purpose of this review is to summarize the empirical findings on the effectiveness of mindfulness-based programs to enhance elite athletes sport performance. The search included original articles published from 1985 to March 2017, using Medline, Psych info, Web of Science, Cochrane, Ebscohost, Isi Web of Knowledge databases and references of retrieved articles.The main search terms were mindfulness programs, sport performance, elite athletes, in different combinations as needed. All articles were coded for their design, type of control, study population, and outcome measures. Search returned 26 articles, and set out 2 mainmindfulness-based interventions on the field of elite sport performance. Despite methodological limitations in theresearch design, the results show MAC and MSPE programs as effective on enhancing elite athlete’s sportsperformance. To confirm these preliminary results, further research, with improved experimental designs, isrecommended. Findings yielded mindfulness programs as an important factor on elite sport performance. In a second moment, another initial study (study 2) was developed, with the objective of developing the sessions, implement and determine the effectiveness of the implementation of the Mindfulness-based program (MBSoccerP) to optimize the sport performance, based on mindfulness evidence based programs developed in sport context. “Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement” (MSPE, Kaufman, Glass, & Pineau, 2018); “Applying Selfix Compassion in Sport” (Gilbert, 2009; Mosewich, Crocker, Kowalski, & DeLongis, 2013; Tirch, 2010); “Mindful Athlete” (Mumford, 2015); “Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment Appraoch” (MAC, Gardner, & Moore, 2007, 2012); Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction ( MBSR, Kabat-Zinn, 1985, 2003). The MBSoccerP program will be described in detail in chapter 3 of the present thesis. Study 2: Mindfulness and Compassion Strategies on Elite Soccer: Conceptualization of Mindfulness-Based Soccer Program (MBSoccerP) The difference between success and failure has become increasingly smaller in sport. A “third wave” approach in sport psychology has been used recently to increase the performance level of the elite athletes with very well-defined programs. (Birrer, 2012, Gardner, & Moore, 2007; Gross et al., 2016). Study findings yielded that high-level athlete’s meta-awareness and effective refocusing training by mindfulness-based programs were identified as important factors on performance training and competition (Carraça, Serpa, Palmi, & Rosado, 2018). Explore the conceptualization and implementation of the Mindfulness-Based Soccer Program (MBSoccerP) to optimize mindfulness, compassion in the elite soccer performance. Secondary aims are: understand the relationship between attributes of mindfulness traits and self-compassion - the impact on the state of sports performance and dispositional flow; the relation between psychological symptoms, experiential avoidance and consequent effect on the level of anxiety and sports performance. Letter to editor was conduct based on scientific publications and was retrieved from the PUBMED, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Cochrane, ISI-Web of Science databases searched from 1985 to 2018. The main references cited in reviews were also included in the review to ensure that no relevant studies were excluded. The main search terms were mindfulness-based interventions, sport performance, soccer, flow state, self-compassion, in different combinations as needed. The letter to editor allowed documenting advantages in participating in the Mindfulness- Based Soccer Program MBSoccerP with increase the attributes related to mindfulness, higher levels of self-compassion, acceptance flow state, sport performance, a lower overall index of psychopathological symptoms and physiological response to stress, less suppression of thoughts. Study findings yielded could suggest that MBSoccerP can be helpful to enhance x performance in sport. Thus, in a third phase, the main goal of this thesis was to adapt and evaluate the effectiveness of a Mindfulness-Based Program in Football Players (MBSoccerP). Study 3: The Mindfulness- Based Soccer Program (MBSoccerP): Effects on Elite Athletes Newly, 3º wave Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) programs suggest that mindfulness-based programs might be a powerful strategy to optimize performance and improve flow. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a Mindfulness-Based Soccer Program (MBSoccerP) on elite soccer athletes. In a quasi-experimental design with experimental (n = 28) and control group (n = 29), the effectiveness of MBSoccerP was tested. The results of an analysis of covariance with repeated measures indicate that the intervention group (M=25.68, SD=3.42) significantly improved in Mindfulness-act with awareness; Mindfulness non-react; Self-compassion mindfulness; Selfcompassion self-kindness; Selfcompassion common-humanity subscales; Dispositional flow state total scale; and decreased Brief Symptom Inventory anxiety subscale and experiential avoidance, as traits compared to the control group, and increase direct measures scores of sports performance Athlete´s Performance Self-Rating Scale and Coach´s Performance Self-Rating Scale. Results suggest that MBSoccerP can be effective in enhance elite soccer performance, self-compassion, psychological flexibility, mindfulness and flow. Additionally, it was intended to study the attributes that are involved in the performance of high competition, especially in collective modalities, in order to determine if strategies based on mindfulness, psychological flexibility and compassion promote optimal performance states. The multiple hierarchical regressions were thus used to evaluate the influence of the main constructs of the MBSoccerP program, described in study 4 and study 5. Study 4: A Pilot study of a Mindfulness- Based Program (MBSOCCERP): The Potential Role of Mindfulness, Self-Compassion and Psychological flexibility on flow and Elite Performance in Soccer Athletes. xi Mindfulness-based interventions have consistently demonstrated associations with multiple aspects of flow and sport performance. In this current pilot study, we sought to explore the effects of Mindfulness-based program for elite soccer athletes (MBSoccerP) training on self-compassion, mindfulness, and psychological flexibility, flow and sport performance outcomes on a sample of 57 elite soccer players (Portuguese 2ª league) from two different cohorts participated in this study. Also, we examined the relationship between mindfulness, psychological flexibility, and self-compassion at baseline-predicted flow and performance measures. Paired t-tests and correlations were conducted to examine changes and significant relation between variables before and after the MBSoccerP intervention. Also hierarchical regression was used to assess the influence of baseline psychological flexibility, self-compassion, and mindfulness facets on flow and sport performance measures at postintervention in this pre-/post-pilot study. Results suggested that mindfulness, self-compassion, direct forms of performance and flow improved from pre to post-intervention and psychological inflexibility decreased. Further, mindfulness predicted higher flow at post intervention while controlling for baseline mindfulness. Psychological inflexibility predicted lower dispositional flow at post intervention. Findings suggest that MBSoccerP may be effective for improving flow and performance. Study 5: Mindful Compassion Training on Elite Soccer: Effects, Roles and Associations on Flow, Psychological Distress and Thought Suppression. Research on mindfulness and self-compassion has suggested that these closely related constructs are also strongly related to flow, psychological distress, experiential avoidance and thought suppression. Despite the potential of this approach, literature in respect to the relation and role of these constructs in the sport context is scarce, particularly in soccer. The current study explored relations among self-compassion, mindfulness, psychological flexibility, and psychological distress (including anxiety), thought suppression and flow state, through the implementation of Mindfulness-Based Soccer Program (MBPSoccerP) for elite athletes. This study also analyzed the influence of baseline psychological flexibility, self-compassion and mindfulness facets on psychological distress, anxiety, flow and thought suppression measures at post-intervention. Methods: A quasiexperimental design was used and involved a pre-/post-pilot study and paired t-tests, pearson correlations and hieraquical regression analyses were conducted to determine the common xii and unique variance in sport context predicted by these constructs and to compare their relative predictive strength in a nonclinical sample of elite soccer players -Portuguese 2º league (n=57; Mage = 25.79 years, SD = 3.3) Results: Findings showed self-compassion, mindfulness and psychological flexibility were negative associated with psychological distress (including anxiety) and thought suppression; and positively related to flow. In support, self-compassion, mindfulness and experiential avoidance explained variance beyond psychological distress (including anxiety), thought suppression and flow. Conclusions: Results suggest that mindfulness, self-compassion and psychological flexibility development may be beneficial in cultivating positive sport experience and flow state and less psychological distress and thought suppression. Overall the results suggest that the MBSoccerP program can be effective in optimizing performance, and increasing mindfulness traits, self-compassion, psychological flexibility and flow state. The results suggest that mindfulness, self-compassion, and the development of psychological flexibility can be beneficial in cultivating more positive sport experiences, and more often mediating flow and reducing psychological distress and negative thought. It is concluded that, programs based on mindfulness, are an important factor in the optimization of performance in high competition. The aim of this thesis is to explore the origins and applications of psychological skills training programs based on mindfulness, selfcompassion and psychological flexibility in the context of elite soccer, in order to meet the aims and research questions of the main study and sub studies. Implications for practice, limitations and some of the directions for future research are also stated.

O presente conjunto de investigações pretendeu estudar a prevalência e os fatores determinantes do consumo de substâncias ilícitas que melhoram o desempenho, em praticantes de fitness em ginásios portugueses. Para a sua consecução, realizou-se um primeiro estudo cujo objetivo foi compilar as evidências disponíveis na literatura acerca da prevalência e conceptualização dos fatores psicossociais que podem influenciar o uso destas substâncias nesta população específica, baseado no modelo da Teoria do Comportamento Planeado (TCP) (Ajzen, 1991), nomeadamente, em Portugal, que justificassem, ou não, este trabalho. Seguidamente, procedeu-se à adaptação do “Questionário de Atitudes perante o Doping no Desporto” (Serpa et al., 2001), baseado no referido modelo (Ajzen, 1991), ao contexto do fitness, efetuou-se a sua distribuição e realizou-se a sua validação psicométrica, para avaliar os constructos incluídos no modelo teórico. No terceiro estudo, foi investigada a prevalência do uso deste tipo de substâncias na amostra obtida e a sua associação com os fatores sócio demográficos, perfil da prática de atividade física e modalidades praticadas. Foi ainda investigada a influência social dos pares neste tipo de comportamento, bem como os motivos para a toma, a forma de aquisição, vias de administração, efeitos colaterais e, também, hábitos tabágicos e de consumo de álcool. Por fim, foram identificados e analisados os preditores das intenções de consumo de substâncias ilícitas que melhoram o desempenho nestes praticantes e em que medida o género e a toma de substâncias influenciam os constructos considerados na TCP (atitudes, crenças, normas subjetivas e intenções). No total, participaram 453 utilizadores de ginásios, praticantes de várias modalidades, com idades compreendidas entre os 16 e os 79 anos. Os dados foram analisados através de modelos de equações estruturais, aplicando-se análises fatoriais de índole confirmatória, assim como, análises multigrupos, médias latentes e testes de invariância one-way Anova. Foi ainda utilizada regressão logística múltipla binária, teste Qui-Quadrado ou simulação de Monte Carlo ou teste Exato de Fisher. Foram calculados odds ratios e os respetivos intervalos de confiança de 95%. Os resultados do primeiro estudo revelaram que existe uma prevalência considerável no consumo de substâncias que varia de acordo com a área geográfica estudada, tendo implicações em termos de saúde pública, sendo de fundamental importância o estudo dos fatores psicossociais que influenciam este comportamento. Não foi encontrado qualquer estudo formal sobre a situação em Portugal. No estudo seguinte, verificou-se boas propriedades psicométricas do instrumento para avaliar as atitudes face ao consumo de substâncias ilícitas que melhoram o desempenho no fitness, podendo ser aplicado como ferramenta de diagnóstico e identificação. Os resultados do terceiro estudo comprovaram a utilização deste tipo de substâncias no contexto do fitness português, nomeadamente, o consumo de diuréticos e esteroides anabolisantes, bem como a associação com as demais variáveis consideradas (género, habilitações académicas, perfil de prática e modalidades praticadas), tendo-se verificado a influência social dos pares como peça chave neste tipo de comportamento. Os resultados do quarto estudo asseveraram as fortes relações entre as atitudes, normas subjetivas e as crenças, sendo todos eles preditores das intenções para o uso de substâncias, destacando-se as normas subjetivas, como o principal preditor. Verificaram-se diferenças entre os géneros e entre os que não tomam e tomam estas substâncias, em relação aos constructos considerados na TCP. Implicações para a intervenção, limitações e direções futuras para a investigação são também apresentadas e discutidas. The present investigation aimed to study the prevalence and determinants of illicit performance-enhancing substances (PES) use in gym users. Therefore, a first study was carried out to compile the available evidence in the literature about the prevalence and conceptualization of the psychosocial factors that may influence the use of these substances in this specific population, based on the model of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), (Ajzen, 1991), namely in Portugal, whether or not they justified this work. In addition, the "Doping Attitudes Questionnaire in Sport" (Serpa et al., 2001) was adapted to the context of fitness, its distribution was made, and their psychometric validation was performed to evaluate the constructs included in the theoretical model (Ajzen, 1991). In the third study, the prevalence of the use of this type of substance in the sample obtained was investigated and its association with the socio demographic factors, profile of the practice of physical activity and modalities practiced. It was also investigated the social influence of peers in this type of behavior, as well as the reasons for taking, the way of acquisition, ways of administration, side effects and smoking habits and alcohol consumption. Finally, predictors of the intention to use PES among these gym users were identified and analyzed and whether gender and use of PES influence the TPB variables (attitudes, beliefs, subjective norms and intentions). In total, 453 gym users, practitioners of various modalities, aged between of 16 and 79 years participated in the study. The data were analyzed through structural equation models, applying factorial analyzes of a confirmatory nature, as well as multi-group, latent mean analyzes and One-Way Anova test. We also used binary multiple logistic regression, Chi-square test or Monte Carlo simulation or Fisher's exact test. Odds ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals were calculated. The results of the first study revealed that there is a considerable prevalence in the consumption of substances that varies according to the geographic area studied, having implications in terms of public health, and being of fundamental importance the study of the psychosocial factors that influence this behavior. No formal studies were found on the situation in Portugal. In the following study, we verified good psychometric properties of the instrument to evaluate the attitudes towards the consumption of PES in the fitness, being able to be applied as a tool of diagnosis and identification. The results of the third study confirmed the use of this type of substances in the Portuguese fitness context, namely the consumption of diuretics and anabolic steroids, as well as the association with other variables considered (gender, academic qualifications, practice profile and practiced modalities), and the social influence of peers has been a key factor in this type of behavior. The results of the fourth study asserted the strong relationships between attitudes, subjective norms and beliefs, all of which are predictors of PES use intentions, standing out subjective norms as the main predictor. There were differences between gender and between PES users and nonusers in terms of the TPB´s variables. Implications for the practice, limitations and future directions for the research are discussed.

A presente investigação tem como principal objetivo compreender a relevância de diversos fatores sociodemográficos e psicossociais inerentes ao desenvolvimento do talento em contexto desportivo, numa perspectiva multidimensional. Procedeu-se a uma avaliação quantitativa de jogadores de futebol, integrados num clube de elite, com idades compreendidas entre os 13 e os 19 anos. No sentido de avaliar os construtos psicológicos considerados no presente estudo (motivação, perfecionismo, suporte parental, resiliencia, coping e compromisso) foram utilizados os seguintes questionários: Sport Motivation Scale - SMS (Pelletier et al., 1995); Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale – MPS (Frost, Marten, Lahart, & Rosenblate, 1990); Own Memories of Parental Rearing – EMBU (Perris, Jacobson, Lindstörm, Von Knorring, & Perris, 1980); Resilience Scale – RS (Wagnild & Young, 1993); Athletic Coping Skills – ACSI 28 (Smith, Schutz, Smoll, & Ptacek, 1995); e Elite Athlete Commitment Scale – EACS (Ramadas, Serpa, Rosado, Gouveia & Maroco, 2013). A significância da variável nível de prestação (elite/sub-elite; dispensados/retidos) sobre os diversos constructos psicológicos foi avaliada através da análise da covariância multivariada (MANCOVA), da análise de equações estruturais (CBSEM) e da técnica de míninos quadrados parciais (PLS). Os jogadores mais bem sucedidos (jogadores de elite e jogadores retidos) percecionaram maior suporte parental, demonstraram níveis mais elevados de compromisso, resiliência, autodeterminação, capacidade de adaptação e confronto, assim como um perfeccionismo ajustado. No que concerne às variáveis sociodemográficas, constatou-se que os jogadores retidos jogam predominantemente no segundo ano do respetivo grupo de idade e têm uma idade inferior aos jogadores dispensados. Os resultados obtidos poderão constituir um relevante suporte para futuros programas educacionais que incidam sobre temáticas relacionadas com os compromissos necessários à prossecução e manutenção de níveis de elite, estratégias de coping, gestão da rotina diária, e o papel dos pais no processo de formação do jovem desportista. Current research aims to understand the relevance of several socio-demographical and psychosocial variables within talent development process on a multidimensional basis. A quantitative evaluation was implemented with the participation of youth players from an elite football club, aged between 13 and 19. To access the athletes psychological constructs considered in this study (motivation, perfectionism, parental support, resilience, coping skills and commitment) the following questionnaires were administered: Sport Motivation Scale - SMS (Pelletier et al., 1995); Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale – MPS (Frost, Marten, Lahart, & Rosenblate, 1990; Own Memories of Parental Rearing – EMBU (Perris, Jacobson, Lindstörm, Von Knorring, & Perris, 1980); Resilience Scale – RS (Wagnild & Young, 1993); Athletic Coping Skills – ACSI 28 (Smith, Schutz, Smoll, & Ptacek, 1995); and Elite Athlete Commitment Scale – EACS (Ramadas, Serpa, Rosado, Gouveia, & Maroco, 2013). Multivariate repeated-measures analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), covariance-based structural equation model (CBSEM) and partial least squares (PLS) were conducted to determine the effect of performance level on the different constructs. The most succeeded players (elite and selected ones) felt more supported by their parents, demonstrated higher levels of commitment, resilience, self-determination, coping skills, as well as, an adjusted perfectionism. Moreover, selected players are younger e play predominantly in the second year of the respective age group. Present results constitute a relevant support to future educational programs, particularly those that focus on topics such as the requirements to achieve and maintain elite levels, coping strategies, daily routine management and the role of parents on youth sport participation.

O estudo teve como objetivo investigar as motivações de idosos para praticar atividades físicas. Foi utilizado como instrumento, o Questionário de Motivação de Idosos Praticantes de Atividades Físicas (QMIPAF), construído e validado por Lucena & Serpa (2008). O questionário é composto de duas partes distintas, porém complementares, sendo que a primeira tem como meta conhecer as características sociodemográficas e de atividades físicas dos idosos. A segunda parte é constituída por 35 questões que objetiva investigar a motivação dos idosos para praticar atividades físicas. As questões são agrupadas em sete Dimensões referentes ao construto motivação que são: Interesse Pessoal; Contextual; Interação Social; Saúde; Psicológica; Habilidade Motora e Estética. Cada Dimensão contém cinco questões que são respondidas numa escala tipo Likert com cinco (5) alternativas de respostas. Os dados coletados foram tratados e analisados estatisticamente, no software SPSS, versão 13.0. A amostra foi constituída por 536 sujeitos, sendo 479 mulheres com média de idade de 68,3 anos e 57 homens com 70,7 anos, praticantes de ginástica (78,4%), dança (17,4%) hidroginástica (17,5%), caminhada (24,6%), outras atividades físicas complementares, nas cidades de João Pessoa, Cabedelo e Santa Rita, no Estado da Paraíba. Em relação ao estado civil, 44%, são casados, 36% são viúvos e 17% são solteiros. A maioria tem baixo nível de escolaridade, sendo 11,6% analfabetos, 42,0% alfabetizados, 17,2% o ensino fundamental, 13,2% o ensino médio e 10,1% concluíram o ensino superior. A Dimensão Habilidade Motora, com média de 4,25 foi a principal motivação dos idosos para praticar atividades físicas, seguida das Dimensões da Saúde (4.17), Psicologia (4.14), Interação Social (3,97), Interesse Pessoal (3.79), Estética (3,45), e Contextual (3,36). Nas 35 questões do QMIPAF os idosos citaram ser extremamente importante, praticar atividades físicas para: ser fisicamente saudável (Interesse Pessoal), exercitar-se por conta própria (Contextual), participar de eventos (Interação Social), melhorar o aparelho locomotor (Saúde), sentir-se autovalorizado (Psicológica), melhorar o equilíbrio (Habilidade Motora), e melhorar a forma física (Estética). Na comparação entre as Dimensões e as variáveis sociodemográficas, foi observado que os idosos na faixa dos 60-79 anos, são mais motivados para praticar atividades físicas, que os sujeitos com mais de 80 anos, diferenciando estatisticamente nas Dimensões da Saúde (p=0,035) Habilidade Motora (p=0,018). Em síntese, são sujeitos mais jovens motivados intrinsecamente para melhorar o aparelho locomotor e o equilíbrio. O foco motivacional das mulheres foi aliar o exercício físico como meio de melhorar a depressão (Psicológica) diferenciando-se estatisticamente (p=0,009) dos seus pares do sexo oposto. Foi encontrada na Dimensão da Interação Social, varias diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre escolaridade e gênero. Nesse sentido observou-se que os idosos de baixa e média escolaridade são mais motivados que os de nível escolar superior, para exercitar-se com objetivos de fazer novas amizades (p=0,037) e interagir com outros grupos (p=0,045). Entre gênero, os homens são motivados para trabalhar em equipe diferenciando-se estatisticamente das mulheres (p=0,011). Na Dimensão da Habilidade Motora, os 54 sujeitos da amostra portadores de nível escolar superior são motivados para melhorar a resistência física, diferenciando-se dos sujeitos de escolaridade inferior (p= 0,012). Estes resultados estão relacionados a diversos fatores como mais experiência e mais tempo de prática de atividades físicas, que possuem, e à motivação para determinado objetivo, como a promoção social, cultural, e notadamente a saúde. Observou-se que a motivação é baseada em três grandes tendências: a) contatos interpessoais, visando conhecimentos e relacionamentos; b) a saúde, na busca de um melhor equilíbrio e locomoção; c) a psicológica com foco nas motivações intrínseca e extrínseca para a melhora da depressão e o mais importante, a autovalorização do individuo. Para os idosos da amostra, a prática regular da atividade física mostrou-se importante para melhorar sua qualidade de vida, e o bem-estar físico e psicológico. Tendo em consideração os objetivos propostos para esta tese sobre a construção e validação deste questionário, podemos afirmar que as suas qualidades psicométricas comprovaram a validade do instrumento, demonstrando que a sua estrutura fatorial possui índices bastante aceitáveis de validade e de confiabilidade. Entretanto, devemos registrar que o resultado da investigação não pode ser generalizado como conclusivo, pois será necessária a aplicação e desenvolvimento de novos estudos com idosos praticantes de atividade físicas em outras regiões do Brasil, o que para tanto sugerimos o emprego do QMIPAF em outras populações. This study had the objective to investigate the motivations of the elderly to practice physical activities. As an instrument, the Survey of Motivation of the Elderly Who Practice Physical Activities was used (QMIPAF), made and validated by Lucena & Serpa (2008). The survey is composed by two distinct parts, but complementary, and that the first had the goal to know the socio demographic characteristics and the physical activities of the elderly. The second part is constituted by 35 questions that objectified to investigate the motivation of the elderly to practice physical activities. The questions were put together in seven Dimensions to the construct motivation that are: Contextual, Social Interaction, Health, Psychological, Motor and Aesthetics Ability. Each Dimension has five questions that were answered in a scale type Likert, with five (5) alternative answers. The data collected was statistically treated and analyzed by the SPSS software, version 13.0. The sample was constituted by 57 men, 70,7 of age, practitioners of gymnastics (78,4%), dance (17,4%), hydro gymnastics (17,5%), walking (24,6%) and other complementary physical activities, in the cities of João Pessoa, Cabedelo e Santa Rita, in Paraiba State. When it comes to marital status, 44% are married, 36% are widowers and 17% are single. The majority has low level of education, and that 11,6% are illiterate, 42% are literate, 17,2% finished basic education, 13,2% secondary school and 10,1% higher education. The Dimension Motor Ability, with an average of 4,25, was the main motivation for the elderly to practice physical activities, followed by the Dimension of Health (4,17), Psychological (4,14), Social Interaction (3,97), Personal Interest (3,79), Aesthetics (3,45) and Contextual (3,36). In the 35 questions from the QMIPAF, the subjects surveyed said that it was extremely important to practice physical activities because they were physically healthy (Personal Interest), exercise on your own account (Contextual), take part in events (Social Interaction), improve the locomotor apparatus (Health), feel self valued (Psychological), improve the equilibrium (Motor Ability) and improve physical shape (Aesthetics). Comparing the Dimensions and the variable socio demographics, it was observed that the elderly between 60-79 years of age are more motivated to practice physical activities than the subjects with more than 80 years old, being statistically different in the Dimensions of Health (p=0,018) and Motor Ability (p=0,018). In syntheses, they are young subjects, motivated intrinsically to improve the locomotor apparatus and the equilibrium. The motivational focus was to ally the physical exercise also as a way to become better from depression (Psychological), being statistically different (p=0,009) from their pairs of the opposite sex. Several differences statistically significant were found in the Dimension of Social Interaction, between schooling and gender. Accordingly, it was observed that the elderly with low and average schooling are more motivated than the ones with higher education to exercise with the objective to make new friends (p=0,037) and interact with other groups (p=0,045). Between the genders, the men are more motivated to work in group, being statistically different from the women (p=0,011). In the Dimension of Motor Ability, the 54 subjects of the sample with higher education are motivated to improve physical resistance, differently from the ones with basic education (p=0,012). These results are related to several factors, like the amount of time and experience in the physic-sportive environment, that both groups have, and the motivation for certain objective, like the social, cultural and, specially, the health rise. Moreover, it was observed that the motivation is based on three great tendencies: the interpersonal contacts, aiming the knowledge and the exchange of knowledge; the health, seeking a better equilibrium and locomotion; the psychological, focusing the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, to become better from depression, and, mainly, the self-worth of the subject. For the elderly of the sample, a regular practice of physical activity is important to improve their life quality and psychological and physical welfare. Considering the objectives proposed for this thesis, about the construction and validation of this survey, we could conclude that the psychometric qualities prove the validity of the instrument, showing that its factorial structure has very acceptable indices of validity and reliability. However, we must register that the result of this investigation cannot be generalized as conclusive, because it will be necessary the application and development of new studies with elderly who practice physical activities in other regions of the north, center-west and south Brazil.

Mestrado em Psicologia do Desporto Esta investigação em Psicologia do Desporto encontra-se dividida em três estudos que se complementam e que seguem uma linha de pensamento. Primeiramente, é apresentada uma revisão de literatura sobre o tema em si, para melhor entendermos o estado da mesma e quais as direcções a seguir. Em seguida efectuou-se a validação e adaptação do Inventário de Competências Mentais no Desporto, para a população portuguesa, no qual 52 dos 75 itens iniciais foram eliminados, dando origem a um último instrumento constituído por 23 itens finais, onde estão presentes os seguintes factores: Auto-Confiança, Ansiedade, Motivação/Volição, Visualização Mental, Persistência, Atitude Positiva, Emoção Positiva e Concentração. Com o instrumento validado e adaptado à população Portuguesa, o terceiro estudo é relativo à diferenciação entre dois grupos de atletas no que diz respeito às competências psicológicas apresentadas pelos mesmos. Assim, com uma amostra total de 251 participantes, divididos num grupo de atletas talentos (N=40) praticantes masculinos de futebol da selecção nacional de sub-19, e num grupo de atletas comuns (N=211), praticantes masculinos de futebol do campeonato nacional de sub-19, da presente época de 2011/2012. Aqui foram delineadas quais as competências psicológicas que melhor caracterizam os talentos desportivos, bem como quais delas podem predizer de uma forma mais fidedigna o desenvolvimento do talento, através da comparação entre as competências que discriminam com significância os dois grupos de atletas. Aqui, os resultados mais relevantes dão ênfase à Auto-Confiança, à Persistência e à Ansiedade (ou controlo da mesma), o que indica que os atletas talentos possuem e fazem melhor uso destas competências psicológicas.

Mestrado em Psicologia do Desporto A investigação na área dos talentos desportivos tem enfatizado a procura das componentes que diferenciam atletas de elite dos restantes, procurando encontrar justificações para a excelência desportiva. O propósito essencial desta investigação visa analisar os factores que determinam o processo de desenvolvimento do talento, entre eles, a genética, a prática e os factores psicológicos. Neste sentido desenvolveram-se duas investigações distintas mas complementares. Num primeiro estudo, reconhecendo a importância das características psicológicas no processo de desenvolvimento do talento, propusemo-nos adaptar o questionário Mental Skills Inventory for Sport (MSIS; Menkehorst, 2006) para a população portuguesa, aferindo as suas qualidades psicométricas. No que respeita ao segundo estudo, procurámos analisar o impacto das características da prática sobre o talento desportivo recorrendo a uma amostra de 251 atletas de futebol, todos do género masculino, com idades compreendidas entre os 16 e os 18 anos (M= 17.44; DP= 0.593). Os dados recolhidos compreendem a idade de início e tipo de prática desportiva geral e competitiva no futebol bem como número de treinos e horas por semana. Os resultados evidenciam uma relação significativa entre a prática diversificada a mais que um desporto e o número de horas e treinos por semana no que respeita ao talento desportivo.

Dissertação de Mestrado em Psicologia do Desporto Desde há 20 anos que a investigação tem afirmado a importância do suporte parental durante o desenvolvimento desportivo da criança. Neste âmbito, o presente trabalho abordou, ao longo de cinco capítulos, o tema do envolvimento parental no futebol. O primeiro capítulo reporta à apresentação do estudo desenvolvido, assinalando as suas principais características relativamente ao problema levantado, propósito, pressupostos, limitações, pertinência, e definições operacionais. No segundo capítulo foi intento desenvolver conceptualmente o modelo do envolvimento parental (Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 2005), originalmente oriundo da investigação em contexto académico, capaz de congregar determinadas valências para responder a questões que a investigação no contexto desportivo presentemente ainda não conseguiu solucionar: a) porque os pais se envolvem; b) que características apresentam as formas de envolvimento; e c), como é que o envolvimento influencia o contexto de realização da criança na prática desportiva. O terceiro capítulo consiste num estudo cujo principal objectivo foi analisar as características psicométricas das versões portuguesas das onze escalas independentes que oferecem consistência aos Níveis I e II do modelo do envolvimento parental de Hoover-Demsey e Sandler (2005). A amostra é constituída por 206 pais e mães de jovens jogadores de futebol de vários níveis competitivos, com idades compreendidas entre os 9 e os 18 anos. As análises à consistência interna confirmaram as boas características psicométricas das escalas e a sua potencial utilidade para a futura investigação e intervenção psicológica em contexto desportivo. O quarto capítulo é relativo a um estudo que procurou analisar as diferenças entre as características do envolvimento de pais de talentos e de não talentos em futebol. Um inventário constituído por onze escalas independentes foi administrado a 162 pais e mães de crianças e jovens praticantes de futebol de vários níveis competitivos. Os pais foram classificados de acordo com o nível de mestria desportiva dos filhos (talento e não talento). Especificamente, os pais de talentos comparativamente com os pais de não talentos, demonstraram ter mais consciência do papel parental, percepcionaram mais invocações para o envolvimento oriundas do filho, e reportaram encorajar e reforçar mais frequentemente os filhos. Por sua vez, os pais de não talentos revelaram percepcionar mais invocações para o envolvimento oriundas do treinador em comparação com os pais de talentos. Os resultados corroboram a hipótese de que o padrão de envolvimento parental diferencia-se segundo o nível de mestria das crianças e jovens em futebol. Finalmente, o quinto capítulo refere-se a um estudo cujo objectivo foi avaliar as características do padrão do envolvimento parental durante as etapas de desenvolvimento em futebol. Um inventário que incluiu doze escalas referentes ao envolvimento parental foi administrado a 206 pais e mães de crianças e jovens praticantes de futebol de vários níveis competitivos. Os pais foram classificados em três grupos, de acordo com as etapas de desenvolvimento desportivo dos filhos. Em geral, as percepções parentais das invocações oriundas do clube, do treinador e do jovem atleta são as variáveis que mais explicam as actividades de envolvimento dos pais. Especificamente, os pais cujos filhos praticam futebol correspondente à etapa de iniciação reportaram percepcionar mais oportunidades para o envolvimento concedidas pelo treinador do que os pais envolvidos nas etapas de especialização e investimento, e percepcionam mais significativamente invocações para o envolvimento oriundas do filho comparativamente aos pais da etapa de investimento; os pais de jovens atletas praticantes na etapa de especialização percepcionam mais as responsabilidades acerca do seu papel na prática desportiva do que os pais nas etapas de iniciação e investimento, bem como, procuram modelar mais os comportamentos dos filhos na prática desportiva do que os pais na etapa de iniciação. Em resumo, os resultados sugerem a capacidade preditiva do modelo do envolvimento parental no desporto, sendo apresentadas algumas implicações para a investigação e prática sobre esta temática. ABSTRACT: For the past 20 years, research has revealed the importance of parental support in the development of children’s sporting abilities. This five-chapter study deals with the issue of parental involvement in soccer. The first chapter is related to the presentation of the study: its problem, purpose, assumptions, limitations, relevance, and operational definitions. The purpose of the second chapter is to present the model of parental involvement (Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 2005), originally developed for an academic context, but useful for answering certain questions in the context of sport investigation, which currently remain unanswered: a) why do parents get involved?, b) what characteristics are present in their involvement?, and c) how does their involvement affect children’s achievement in sport? The third chapter consists of a study aimed at assessing the psychometric properties of the Portuguese versions of eleven independent scales which are consistent with levels I and II of the Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler model of parental involvement. The sample consisted of 206 mothers and fathers of young soccer players at various competitive levels, between the ages of 9 and 18. The results confirmed the quality of the psychometric properties of these measures and their potential value for future psychological research and intervention in the context of sport. The fourth chapter consists of a study aimed at examining the features of parental involvement in talented and non-talented young soccer players. An inventory including eleven independent scales was administered to 162 mothers and fathers of young soccer players at various competitive levels. These parents were classified according to the level of their child’s sporting talent. Results suggest that, in comparison with the parents of non-talented children, the parents of talented children demonstrate more parental role consciousness, perceive more invitations for involvement from the young athlete and report more encouragement and reinforcement behaviour during youth sporting activities. In contrast, parents of non-talented children perceive more invitations for involvement from the coach. The results corroborate the hypothesis that parental involvement differs depending on the child’s level of talent in soccer. Finally, the fifth chapter consists of a study aimed at examining the pattern of parental involvement during the different stages of development in soccer. An inventory that included twelve scales of parental involvement in sport was administered to 206 mothers and fathers of young soccer players at various competitive levels. Parents were classified into three different groups according to their child’s stage of soccer development. In general, results suggest that perceptions of invitations from the sporting club, the coach, and the child were the strongest predictors of parental involvement. More specifically, results suggest that, compared to parents whose children play soccer at a specialization or investment level, parents whose children play at a beginner level report more perceptions of invitations for involvement from the coach and, compared to parents whose children play at a specialization level, perceive more invitations for involvement from the young athlete. In addition, parents whose children play at a specialization level present more role responsibility in comparison to parents of children at a beginner or investment level, and exhibit more modeling behaviors compared to parents whose children play at a beginner level. In conclusion, these results support the predictive capacity of the model of parental involvement in sport and present some implications for research and practice on parental involvement.

O presente conjunto de investigações pretendeu estudar o envolvimento parental na competição desportiva de crianças e jovens. Baseado no modelo do envolvimento parental no desporto (Teques & Serpa, 2009), o estudo permitiu concretizar dois objectivos fundamentais. Primeiro, desenvolver um conjunto de escalas válidas e fidedignas para aceder aos constructos incluídos no modelo teórico. Segundo, testar as hipóteses fundamentadas na estrutura conceptual do modelo com o propósito de compreender (1) a razão porque os pais se envolvem no desporto dos filhos, (2) quais os comportamentos utilizados pelos pais durante o envolvimento, e (3) como é que o envolvimento influencia o contexto de realização do jovem atleta. No total, participaram voluntariamente 1620 pais e 1665 jovens atletas de vários desportos individuais e coletivos, com idades compreendidas entre os 9 e os 18 anos. A prossecução dos objectivos teve por base uma série de três estudos independentes. Os resultados do primeiro estudo sugerem que as crenças do papel parental, a auto-eficácia, a perceção das invocações oriundas do treinador e do jovem atleta, o tempo e energia disponíveis, e os conhecimentos e competências relacionam-se com as atividades de envolvimento dos pais. No segundo estudo, os resultados demonstraram que as perceções dos comportamentos parentais de encorajamento, reforço, instrução, e modelagem medeiam a relação entre os comportamentos reportados pelos pais e as variáveis psicológicas de auto-eficácia, auto-eficácia social, motivação intrínseca, e estratégias de autorregulação dos jovens. Os resultados do terceiro estudo indicam que as perceções dos comportamentos dos pais relacionam-se com a realização desportiva através dos efeitos de mediação da auto-eficácia, autoeficácia social e das estratégias de autorregulação. Implicações para a intervenção, limitações e direções futuras para a investigação são também discutidas. The present investigation focused on parental involvement in youth competitive sport. Based on the model of parental involvement in sport (Teques & Serpa, 2009), the study was designed to accomplish two major goals. The first was to develop valid and reliable measures for assessing constructs included in the model. The second was to test model-driven hypotheses about the relationships between the variables of the model with the purpose to examine (1) the reason parents decide to become involved in youth sport, (2) the mechanisms they use during their involvement, and (3) how their involvement influence youth achievement in sport. In total, 1620 parents and 1665 youth athletes, aged between 9 and 18 years from various competitive sports, volunteered for the study. The investigation was completed in a series of three independent studies. In the first study, a structural equation model demonstrated that the parental role beliefs, parental self-efficacy, perceptions of child and coach invitations, self-perceived time and energy, and knowledge and skills predicted parents’ involvement activities. In the second study, results supported the hypothesized model in which athletes’ perceptions of parents’ encouragement, reinforcement, instruction, and modelling mediated the relationship between parents’ reported behaviors and the athletes’ self-efficacy, social self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation, and self-regulation. The results of the third study revealed that perceptions of parenting practices appear to be related to both motivational and self-regulated behaviours, which, in turn, were associated with youth achievement in sport. Implications for the practice, limitations and future directions for the research are discussed.
