Abstract

International audience; PUMA, antiProton Unstable Matter Annihilation, is a nuclear-physics experiment at CERN aiming at probing the surface properties of stable and rare isotopes by use of low-energy antiprotons. Low-energy antiprotons offer a very unique sensitivity to the neutron and proton densities at the annihilation site, i.e. in the tail of the nuclear density. Today, no facility provides a collider of low-energy radioactive ions and low-energy antiprotons: while not being a collider experiment, PUMA aims at transporting one billion antiprotons from ELENA, the Extra-Low-ENergy Antiproton ring, to ISOLDE, the rare-isotope beam facility of CERN. PUMA will enable the capture of low-energy antiprotons by short-lived nuclei and the measurement of the emitted radiations. In this way, PUMA will give access to the so-far largely unexplored isospin composition of the nuclear-radial-density tail of radioactive nuclei. The motivations, concept and current status of the PUMA experiment are presented.

Abstract

During bursty MHD events, transient ion cyclotron emission (ICE) is observed from deuterium plasmas in the large helical device (LHD) heliotron-stellarator. Unusually, the frequencies of the successive ICE spectral peaks are not close to integer multiples of the local cyclotron frequency of an energetic ion population in the likely emitting region. We show that this ICE is probably driven by a subset of the fusion-born protons near their birth energy E H = 3.02 MeV. This subset has a kinetic energy component parallel to the magnetic field, m H v ∥ 2 / 2 , significantly greater than its perpendicular energy m H v ⊥ 2 / 2 , for which v ⊥ ∼ V A , the AlfvĂ©n speed. First principles computations of the collective relaxation of this proton population, within a majority thermal deuterium plasma, are carried out using a particle-in-cell approach. This captures the full gyro-orbit kinetics of all ions which, together with an electron fluid, evolve self-consistently with the electric and magnetic fields under the Maxwellâ€"Lorentz equations. The simulated ICE spectra are derived from the Fourier transform of the fields which are excited. We find substantial frequency shifts in the peaks of the simulated ICE spectra, which correspond closely to the measured ICE spectra following the resonance condition ω = k ∥ v ∥ + n Ω H for n th proton harmonic. This suggests that the transient ICE in LHD is generated by the identified subset of the fusion-born protons, relaxing under the magnetoacoustic cyclotron instability. So far as is known, this is the first report of a collective radiation signal from fusion-born ions in anon-tokamak magnetically confined plasma. Disambiguation between two or more energetic ion species that could potentially generate complex observed ICE spectra is an increasing challenge, and the results and methodology developed here will assist this. Our approach is also expected to be relevant to ICE driven by ion beams with lower parallel velocities, for example in cylindrical plasma experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The results of the first experimental series to produce a plasma using the ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) in the large helical device (LHD) within the minority scenario developed at Uragan-2M (U-2M) are presented. The motivation of this study is to provide plasma creation in conditions when an electron cyclotron resonance heating start-up is not possible, and in this way widen the operational frame of helical machines. The major constraint of the experiments is the low RF power to reduce the possibility of arcing. No dangerous voltage increase at the radio-frequency (RF) system elements and no arcing has been detected. As a result, a low plasma density is obtained and the antenna-plasma coupling is not optimal. However, such plasmas are sufficient to be used as targets for further neutral beam injection (NBI) heating. This will open possibilities to explore new regimes of operation at LHD and Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. The successful RF plasma production in LHD in this experimental series stimulates the planning of further studies of ICRF plasma production aimed at increasing plasma density and temperature within the ICRF minority scenario as well as investigating the plasma prolongation by NBI heating.

Abstract

The isotope effect, which has been a long-standing mystery in the turbulent magnetically confined plasmas, is the phenomena that the plasma generated with heavier hydrogen isotope show a mitigated transport. This is on the contrary to what is predicted with the simple scaling theory, in which the heavier ions easily diffuse because of its larger gyro-radius. Thanks to the newly developed analysis method and a comprehensive parameter scan experiment in the steady-state plasmas in the Large Helical Device (LHD), the isotope effect was clearly observed in the self-organized internal transport barrier (ITB) structure for the first time. Comparing the ITB intensity in deuterium (D) and hydrogen (H) plasmas, two distinct hydrogen isotope effects are found: stronger ITB is formed in D plasmas and a significant edge confinement degradation accompanied by the ITB formation emerges in H plasmas. Abstract

The neutron emission profile of deuterium plasma in the Large Helical Device was measured with a multi-sightline vertical neutron camera under various magnetic field strength conditions. It was found that the line-integrated neutron emission profile shifts outward in the co-neutral beam (NB) case and inward in the counter NB case. Here, co- and counter directions correspond to enhance and reduce the poloidal magnetic field directions, respectively. The shift becomes more significant when the magnetic field decreased in strength. The experimentally obtained neutron emission profile was compared with the orbit-following models simulated through the DELTA5D code. The calculated neutron emission profiles vary according to the magnetic field strength because of the change of beam ion orbit and the slowing down due to the plasma parameter changes. Although a relatively narrow profile was obtained in the calculations at the inboard side for the co-NB case in the relatively low field condition, the profiles obtained through calculation and experiment were almost qualitatively aligned.

Abstract

Antiprotons as a probe to study short-lived isotopes remain unexploited despite past pioneering works with stable nuclei. In particular, low-energy antiprotons offer a very unique sensitivity to the neutron and proton densities at the annihilation site, i.e. in the tail of the nuclear density. Such studies with short-lived nuclei and low-energy antiprotons are the first motivation of the proposed antiProton Unstable Matter Annihilation (PUMA) experiment. Today, no facility provides a collider of low-energy radioactive ions and low-energy antiprotons: PUMA aims at transporting one billion antiprotons from CERN/ELENA to CERN/ISOLDE to perform the capture of low-energy antiprotons by short-lived nuclei, and probe in this way the so-far unexplored isospin composition of the nuclear-radial-density tail of radioactive nuclei.
