Sexual violence against women is commonly justified in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) despite international commitments to halt it. This study investigated the association between healthcare decision-making capacity and the justification of sexual violence among women in SSA. We used current datasets of 30 sub-Saharan African countries published between January 2010 and December 2018. The sample included 259,885 women who were in sexual unions. We extracted and analysed the data with Stata version 14. Chi-square test and multilevel logistic regression models were used to analyse the data. Results for the regression analysis were presented as adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The results showed that women who decided on their healthcare alone had lower odds [AOR=0.93; CI=0.91-0.96] of justifying sexual violence compared to those who were not deciding alone. We also found that women aged 45-49 [AOR=0.85; CI=0.82-0.89], those with higher education [AOR=0.26; CI=0.24-0.29], cohabiting women (AOR=0.82, CI=0.80-0.85], richest women [AOR= 0.58; CI=0.56-0.60], women living in urban areas [AOR=0.74; CI=0.73-0.76], and Christians [AOR=0.52; CI=0.51-0.54] had lower odds of justifying wife beating if a woman refuses to have sex with her partner. On the contrary, women who engaged in agriculture had higher odds of justifying sexual violence than those who were not working [AOR=1.07; CI=1.04-1.09]. Groups that should be prioritised with anti-sexual violence initiatives are the poor, rural residents, and young women. It is also vital to institute policies and interventions focused on educating men about women's right to make decisions, and why partner violence is unjust and intolerable.

Background: Persons with disabilities (PwDs) face barriers in accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services due to lack of knowledge and awareness, stigma and discrimination, and inadequate service provision. This study aimed to examine the determinants of SRH knowledge and awareness among PwDs in Ghana, and to explore their perceptions of the functionality of SRH services., Methods: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods study design was used to collect and analyse quantitative (n = 402) and qualitative (n = 37) data from PwDs in two districts in Ghana. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualitative data was analysed thematically., Results: Most of the participants had high awareness of SRH (94.3%), sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (92.5%) and HIV/AIDS (97.0%). Employment status was positively associated with SRH awareness [aOR = 1.62; 95% CI = 1.02, 2.59]. Disability type was a significant predictor of STI [aOR = 2.02; 95% CI = 1.39, 2.94] and HIV/AIDS [aOR = 2.32; 95% CI = 1.21, 4.44] awareness, with the visually impaired having higher odds than the physically disabled. Age group was also a significant predictor of STI awareness, with older respondents having higher odds than younger ones [aOR = 1.76; CI = 1.01,3.05 for 30-39 years; aOR = 2.48; CI = 1.22, 5.05 for 40-49 years]. The qualitative findings revealed four main themes: conceptualisation of SRH, active engagement in SRH information seeking, tensions between knowledge and religious beliefs and perceived utility of SRH services., Conclusion: Despite the high levels of SRH knowledge and awareness among PwDs, there are significant gaps and challenges related to disability type, age group, misconceptions, beliefs, and service non-functionality that limit the utility of SRH services. The findings call for tailored education to reduce misconceptions and put in pragmatic steps to deliver quality SRH services and information to PwDs. Further research is needed to assess the sexual lives of PwDs and explore the perspectives of all relevant stakeholders, including service providers and policymakers on how to enhance SRH outcomes for PwDs in Ghana., (© 2023. Background: Marital dissolution, which refers to being divorced or separated, is considered one of the most dramatic demographic events that significantly disrupt families. Unearthing the factors predicting marital dissolution would support actions to reduce the incidence of this phenomenon. The present study sought to examine the association between sex preference for children and marital dissolution segregated by place of residence., Methods: Data for the study were extracted from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) of 25 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Percentages were used to summarise the proportion of marital dissolution among women in sub-Saharan Africa. Binary logistic regression models were fitted to examine the association between sex preference for children and marital dissolution per place of residence. Results of the regression analysis were presented using adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with their respective 95% confidence interval (CI)., Results: The overall prevalence of marital dissolution was 5.92% (95% CI: 5.83-6.00), and this ranged from 1.63% (95% CI: 1.41-1.85) in Burkina Faso to 15.62% (95% CI: 14.70-16.54) in Mozambique. In urban sub-Saharan Africa, the overall prevalence of marital dissolution was 8.88% (95% CI:8.78-8.99), with the lowest prevalence in Mali (3.30%; 95% CI: 2.91-3.69) and the highest in Uganda (18.60%; 95% CI: 17.95-19.25). For rural sub-Saharan Africa, the pooled prevalence was 4.11% (95% CI: 4.03-4.18), with the lowest (0.80%; 95% CI: 0.65-0.95) and highest (14.40%; 95% CI: 13.51-15.29) prevalences in Burkina Faso and Mozambique, respectively. Compared to women with no sex preference, the preference for boys was less likely to result in marital dissolution (aOR = 0.87; 95%CI = 0.83-0.90) in both urban and rural areas, whereas the preference for girls was more likely to result in marital dissolution (aOR = 1.06; 95%CI = 1.02-1.10). When the results were disaggregated by place of residence, in both urban (aOR = 0.87; 95%CI = 0.80-0.95) and rural areas (aOR = 0.87; 95%CI = 0.82-0.92), women who preferred boys were less likely to experience marital dissolution compared to those who had no preference. However, the preference for girls showed no statistically significant association with marital dissolution., Conclusion: Our study has shown that sex preference for children has a significant association with marital dissolution in both rural and urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa. Whereas the preference for male children serves as a protective factor against marital dissolution, the preferences for females was found to increase the likelihood of marital dissolution. Thus, underscoring a need for anti-marital dissolution campaigns and initiatives to prioritise the sensitisation of society about the value of female children. Religious groups and leaders can leverage their platform to quell sex preferences and dissuade marital dissolution. Introduction: Intimate partner violence is a serious public health problem that transcends cultural boundaries in sub-Saharan Africa. Studies have reported that violence characteristics and perception are strong predictors of help-seeking among women. We assessed the prevalence and factors associated with help-seeking among female survivors of intimate partner violence in sub-Saharan Africa., Methods: We pooled data from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) of eighteen sub-Saharan African countries. The data were extracted from the women's files in countries with datasets from 2014 to 2021. A weighted sample of 33,837 women in sexual relationships: married or cohabiting who had ever experienced intimate partner violence within the five years preceding the survey were included in the analysis. Percentages with 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to present the results of the prevalence of help-seeking for intimate partner violence. We used a multilevel binary logistic regression analysis to examine the factors associated with help-seeking among survivors of intimate partner violence. The results were presented using adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with their respective 95% CI. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05., Results: Out of the 33,837 women who had ever experienced intimate partner violence in sub-Saharan Africa, only 38.77% (95% CI = 38.26-39.28) of them sought help. Ethiopia had the lowest prevalence of women who sought help after experiencing intimate partner violence (19.75%; 95% CI = 17.58-21.92) and Tanzania had the highest prevalence (57.56%; 95% CI = 55.86-59.26). Marital status, educational level, current working status, parity, exposure to interparental violence, women's autonomy in household decision-making, mass media exposure, intimate partner violence justification, wealth index, and place of residence were associated with help-seeking behaviour of intimate partner violence survivors., Conclusion: The low prevalence of help seeking among women who have experienced intimate partner violence in sub-Saharan Africa calls for the intensification of formal and informal sources of assistance. Education can play a critical role in empowering girls, which may increase future help-seeking rates. Through media efforts aimed at parental awareness, the long-term benefits of females enrolling in school could be achieved. However, concentrating solely on individual measures to strengthen women's empowerment may not bring a significant rise in help-seeking as far as patriarchal attitudes that permit violence continue to exist. Consequently, it is critical to address intimate partner violence from the dimensions of both the individual and violence-related norms and attitudes. Based on the findings, there should be public awareness creation on the consequences of intimate partner violence. Understanding the factors associated with women's autonomy to refuse risky sex is imperative to inform the development of policies and interventions to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, unsafe abortion, and maternal mortality. This study sought to examine the prevalence and factors associated with women's autonomy to refuse risky sex in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Data for the study were extracted from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) of thirty countries in SSA conducted from 2010 to 2020. We included a weighted sample of 260,025 women who were married or cohabiting in the final analysis. Percentages were used to present the results of the prevalence of women's ability to refuse risky sex. We used a multilevel logistic regression analysis to examine the factors associated with women's ability to refuse risky sex. Stata software version 16.0 was used for the analysis. We found that 61.69% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 56.22-67.15) of the women were autonomous to refuse sex if their partners have other women, and this was highest in Namibia (91.44% [95% CI: 90.77-92.18]) and lowest in Mali (22.25% [95% CI: 21.24-23.26]). The odds of autonomy in refusing risky sex was higher among women with higher education (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.88; 95% CI = 1.78-1.46) compared to those with no formal education. Employment status was also a significant predictor, with working women having higher odds of sex refusal compared to non-working women (aOR = 1.16; 95% CI = 1.13-1.18). Advocacy to improve women's autonomy to refuse risky sex must leverage the mass media as it emerged as a significant factor. Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) remains one of the most significant public health challenges globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Although HIV testing is a vital step for both prevention and treatment, its uptake is still low in SSA. We therefore examined HIV testing in SSA and its individual/household and community factors among women of reproductive age groups (15-49 y)., Methods: Demographic and Health Survey data collected between 2010 and 2020 from 28 SSA countries were used for this analysis. We analysed the coverage of HIV testing and individual/household and community factors on 384 416 women in the reproductive age groups (15-49 y). Bivariate and multivariable multilevel binary logistic regression analysis were conducted to select candidate variables and to identify significant explanatory variables associated with HIV testing and the results were presented using adjusted odd ratios (AORs) at 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: The pooled prevalence of HIV testing among women of reproductive age in SSA was 56.1% (95% CI 53.7 to 58.4), with the highest coverage found in Zambia (86.9%) and the lowest in Chad (6.1%). Age (45-49 y; AOR 0.30 [95% CI 0.15 to 0.62]), women's education level (secondary; AOR 1.97 [95% CI 1.36 to 2.84]) and economic status (richest; AOR 2.78 [95% CI 1.40 to 5.51]) were some of the individual/household factors associated with HIV testing. Similarly, religion (no religion; AOR 0.58 [95% CI 0.34 to 0.97]), marital status (married; AOR 0.69 [95% CI 0.50 to 0.95]) and comprehensive knowledge of HIV (yes; AOR 2.01 [95% CI 1.53 to 2.64]) were significantly associated individual/household factors for HIV testing. Meanwhile, place of residence (rural; AOR 0.65 [95% CI 0.45 to 0.94]) was found to be a significant community-level factor., Conclusion: More than half of married women in SSA have been tested for HIV, with between-country variations. Both individual/household factors were associated with HIV testing. Stakeholders should therefore consider all above-mentioned factors to plan an integrated approach to enhancing HIV testing through health education, sensitization, counselling and empowering older and married women, those with no formal education, those who do not have comprehensive HIV/AIDS knowledge and those in rural areas., (© The Author(s) 2023. Background: Sleep difficulty is an unmet public health concern affecting a vast proportion of the world's population. Poor sleep duration (short or long sleep length) and quality affect more than half of older people. Sleep difficulty is associated with negative health outcomes such as obesity and reduced longevity. We aimed to assess whether poor sleep duration and quality are significant risk factors for obesity in adults aged 15 and over in Australia by examining a nationally representative panel data., Methods: We used three waves (waves 13, 17, and 21) of the nationally representative Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey data. The study applied generalized estimating equations (GEE) logistic regression model to assess the relationship between sleep duration and quality with obesity., Results: The study found that the odds of being obese was significantly higher amongst the study participants with poor sleep duration (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.24, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16-1.32) and poor sleep quality (aOR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.02-1.38) compared with their counterparts who had good sleep duration and quality, respectively., Conclusion: Having short or long sleep at night and poor sleep quality are associated with an increased risk of obesity. Obesity poses a significant threat to the health of Australian adults. Background: Contraceptive continuation is an important factor that has significant implications on total fertility rates and reproductive health outcomes, like unintended pregnancies. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the factors that influence women's decision to continue the use of contraceptives. The present study examined the determinants of contraceptive continuation among women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)., Methods: Data for the study were extracted from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) of twenty-four (24) countries in SSA. Descriptive and multivariable binary logistic regression analysis were conducted. Frequencies, percentanges, and an adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals were used to present the results., Results: Compared to adolescents, adult women aged 45-49 years [aOR: 1.24; CI: 1.13-1.37] had higher odds of contraceptive continuation. The odds of contraceptive continuation were lower among those working [aOR: 0.96; CI: 0.93-0.98] compared to those not working. Also, the study shows that the likelihood of contraceptive continuation was lower among those exposed to family planning messages compared to those not exposed [aOR: 0.91; CI: 0.88-0.93]. Compared to women who used LARCs, women who used pills [aOR: 0.34; CI: 0.33-0.36], injectable [aOR: 0.42; CI: 0.40-0.43], other modern contraceptives [aOR: 0.72; CI: 0.68-0.75] or traditional methods [aOR: 0.50; CI: 0.478-0.523] were less likely to continue with their contraception. Women with one birth [aOR: 0.86; CI: 0.83-0.90] and those with 2 + births in the last five years [aOR: 0.54; CI: 0.512-0.56] reported lower odds of contraceptive continuation as compared to those with no births. Compared to women with no children living, those with 4 + children living had lower odds of contraceptive continuation [aOR: 0.62; CI: 0.57-0.67]. The study also found that the likelihood of contraceptive continuation was higher among those with secondary education [aOR: 1.08; CI: 1.04-1.12] as compared to those with no formal education. Contraceptive continuation was also higher among those who have information on choice [aOR: 3.91; CI: 3.82-4.01], and also higher among those who were undecided about having an additional child [aOR: 1.39; CI: 1.33-1.46]. Compared to West AfricaAngola, women from all other sub-regions were less likely to continue using contraceptives Comoros were more likely to continue with contraception [aOR: 1.49; CI: 1.24-1.78]., Conclusion: To improve contraceptive continuation among women of reproductive age, countries in SSA must invest heavily in advocacy and dissemination of family planning messages, and information of choice. Background: Contraceptive use is crucial to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3. Evidence of socioeconomic inequality in the use of modern contraceptives is essential to address the developing inequality in its utilisation given the low prevalence of contraceptive use among women in Benin. This study examined the socioeconomic inequalities in modern contraceptive use among women in Benin., Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of the 2017-18 Benin Demographic and Health Survey data. A weighted sample of 7,360 sexually active women of reproductive age was included in the study. We used a concentration curve to plot the cumulative proportion of women using modern contraception. Decomposition analysis was conducted to determine factors accounting for the socioeconomic disparities in modern contraceptive use., Results: We noted that the richest women had higher odds of modern contraceptive use (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.67, CI = 1.22-2.30) compared to the poorest women. Other factors that showed significant associations with modern contraception use were age, marital status, religious affiliation, employment status, parity, women's educational level, and ethnicity. We found that modern contraceptive use is highly concentrated among the rich, with rich women having a higher propensity of using modern contraception relative to the poor. Also, the disadvantaged to modern contraceptive use included the poor, those aged 45-49, married women, those working, those with four or more live births, rural residents, and women of Bariba and related ethnicity. Conversely, favourable concentration in modern contraceptive use was found among the rich, women aged 20-24, the divorced, women with two live births, the highly educated, those with media exposure, and women of Yoruba and related ethnicity., Conclusion: The study has shown that wealthy women are more likely to utilize contraceptives than the poor. This is because wealthy women could afford both the service itself and the travel costs to the health facility, hence overcoming any economic barriers to using modern contraception. Other factors such as age, marital status, religion, employment status, parity, mother's educational level, and ethnicity were associated with contraceptive use in Benin. The Benin government and other stakeholders should develop family planning intercession techniques that address both the supply and demand sides of the equation, with a focus on reaching the illiterate and under-resourced population without admittance to modern contraception., (© 2023. Early sexual debut is associated with increased risk of several sexual and reproductive health problems, including unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Hence, determining factors that promote early sexual initiation is significant to guide policy and inform interventions aimed to promote the health of young people through to adulthood. This study examined the prevalence of early sexual debut and its associated factors among young women in Mali. Using cross-sectional nationally representative data from the 2018 Mali Demographic and Health Survey, a total of 4063 young women aged 15-24 were included in the study. Multilevel binary logistic regression analysis was done to determine the factors associated with early sexual debut. The results were presented using adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The prevalence of early sexual debut in Mali was 17.8% (95% CI; 16-19.7%). Young women who attended higher school had lower odds of early sexual debut (aOR = 0.10, 95% CI; 0.01-0.82) compared to young women who had no formal education. Young women from richest households had lower odds of early sexual debut compared to those from the poorest households (aOR = 0.48, 95% CI; 0.27-0.82). Young women from households with large family size also had lower odds of experiencing early sexual debut compared to those in small family size (aOR = 0.81, 95% CI; 0.66-0.99). Furthermore, the odds of early sexual debut were lower among young women in Koulikoro (aOR = 0.59, 95% CI; 0.39-0.90), Sikasso (aOR = 0.35, 95% CI; 0.21-0.56), Segou (aOR = 0.40, 95% CI; 0.25-0.64), and Mopti (aOR = 0.44, 95% CI; 0.23-0.82) regions compared to young women in Kayes region. Higher odds of early sexual debut were found among currently employed compared to not currently employed young women (aOR = 1.74, 95% CI; 1.42-2.12) and currently married compared to not currently married young women (aOR = 4.64, 95% CI; 3.64-5.92). Young women from the Peulh ethnic groups compared to those from the Bambara ethnic groups were at a higher odds of early sexual debut (aOR = 1.43, 95% CI; 1.03-1.99). The findings suggest the need for interventions aimed at addressing early sexual debut among young women. These can include emphasizing the promotion and importance of female education, addressing the cultural practices that promote negative sexual norms/practices such as child marriages, and ensuring social change through efforts such as creating employment or economic opportunities for families., (© 2023. Objective: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) constitute major public health problems because of their prevalence and contribution to mortality and morbidity worldwide. Healthcare seeking for STIs plays a significant role in the global prevention of STIs. We examined the prevalence and factors associated with healthcare seeking for STIs or STI symptoms among women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)., Methods: Data on 38 394 women of reproductive age from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys of 28 countries in SSA were analysed. Percentages were used to summarise the prevalence of healthcare seeking for STIs or STIs symptoms. The factors associated with healthcare seeking for STIs or STI symptoms were examined using multilevel binary logistic regression analysis. We presented the results using adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: Overall, the proportion of women with STIs or STI symptoms who sought healthcare was 66.1%, with the highest and lowest proportion found in Liberia (85.6%) and Ethiopia (37.9%) respectively. The likelihood of seeking healthcare for STIs or STI symptoms increased with increasing wealth quintile and level of education. Working women, older women, cohabiting women, women with comprehensive HIV/AIDS knowledge, women exposed to mass media, those who had no barrier to healthcare access, and those covered by health insurance had greater odds of seeking treatment for STIs or STI symptoms. Background: Access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services is a fundamental human right, but people with disabilities (PwDs) in low-and middle-income countries often face multiple barriers to utilisation. This study aimed to assess the level of SRH services utilisation and the enabling and inhibiting factors among PwDs in Ghana's Ashanti region., Methods: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods study design was employed, involving quantitative ( n  = 402) and qualitative ( n  = 37) data collection from PwDs. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualitative data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis., Results: The study found that only 33.8% of the PwDs had ever used SRH services. Utilisation was associated with sex, marital status and travel duration to health facility. The qualitative data revealed that factors at the individual, family/community and health facility levels influenced utilisation of SRH services, acting as both enablers and barriers., Conclusion: PwDs had relatively low utilisation of SRH services in Ghana's Ashanti region. To increase utilisation, it is recommended to address the stigma and discrimination towards PwDs, provide more training for healthcare providers, improve the accessibility of healthcare facilities, and strengthen the national health insurance scheme. Background: Birth registration is a crucial aspect of ensuring that children have access to their rights and benefits, including health care, education, and citizenship. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), birth registration rates remain low, with millions of children going unregistered each year. Understanding the predictors of birth registration among children in this sub-region is important for developing targeted interventions to improve registration rates. The study examines the predictors of birth registration among children in SSA., Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of secondary data pooled from the Demographic and Health Survey of 17 countries conducted from 2015 to 2021. A weighted sample of 162,500 children was included in the final analysis. We summarized the proportion of birth registration among children in SSA using a forest plot. We utilized a multilevel binary logistic regression analysis to examine the predictors of birth registration. The results were presented using adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: We found that 48.32% [48.15-48.49] of births in SSA were registered. The lowest and highest prevalence of birth registration were found in Ethiopia (2.70 [2.38-3.02]) and Sierra Leone (92.93 [92.36-93.50]), respectively. Increasing child's age was found to be significantly associated with a higher likelihood of birth registrations, with those aged 4 years [aOR = 1.55; CI = 1.49, 1.62] having the highest odds of birth registration compared to those aged below 1 year. Children born to mothers with primary [aOR = 1.17; CI = 1.11, 1.24], secondary [aOR = 1.44; CI = 1.34, 1.54], and higher education [aOR = 1.71; CI = 1.48, 1.99] were more likely to be registered than those born to mothers who had no formal education. Also, children born in health facilities were more likely to be registered [aOR = 1.60; CI = 1.48, 1.74] than those born at home. The odds of birth registration were significantly higher among children whose mothers received assistance during delivery [aOR = 1.88; CI = 1.72, 2.04], those in the richest wealth index [aOR = 3.91; CI = 3.54, 4.33], and those in rural areas [aOR = 1.92; CI = 1.76, 2.10]., Conclusion: There is low childbirth registration coverage in SSA. The predictors of this phenomenon are the child's age, maternal level of education, wealth index, place of residence, sub-region, maternal age, place of delivery, assistance during delivery, marital status, and sex of household head. Background: Globally, health insurance has been identified as a key component of healthcare financing. The implementation of health insurance policies in low and middle-income countries has led to a significant increase in access to healthcare services in these countries. This study assessed health insurance coverage and its associated factors among women of reproductive age living in rural Ghana., Methods: This study used a nationally representative data from the 2017/2018 Ghana Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (GMICS) and included 7340 rural women aged 15-49 years. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models were developed to assess the association between the explanatory and the outcome variable. Statistical significance was considered at p = 0.05., Results: The overall prevalence of health insurance coverage among rural women in Ghana was 51.9%. Women with secondary (aOR = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.38-2.14) and higher education (aOR = 4.57, 95% CI: 2.66-7.84) were more likely to have health insurance coverage than those who had no formal education. Women who frequently listened to radio (aOR = 1.146, 95% CI: 1.01-1.30) were more likely to have health insurance coverage than those who did not. Women who had a child (aOR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.50-2.17), two children (aOR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.27-1.98), three children (aOR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.10-1.80), and five children (aOR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.03-1.79) were more likely to have health insurance coverage than those who had not given birth. Women who were pregnant (aOR = 3.52, 95% CI: 2.83-4.38) at the time of the survey, and women within the richest households (aOR = 3.89, 95% CI: 2.97-5.10) were more likely to have health insurance coverage compared to their other counterparts. Women in the Volta region (aOR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.02-1.81), Brong Ahafo region (aOR = 2.82, 95% CI: 2.20-3.60), Northern region (aOR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.02-1.70), Upper East region (aOR = 2.13, 95% CI: 1.63-2.80) and Upper West region (aOR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.20-2.03) were more likely to have health insurance coverage than those in the Western region., Conclusion: Although more than half of women were covered by health insurance, a significant percentage of them were uninsured, highlighting the need for prompt policy actions to improve coverage levels for insurance. It was found that educational level, listening to radio, parity, pregnancy status, wealth quintile, and region of residence were factors associated with health insurance coverage. We recommend better targeting and prioritization of vulnerability in rural areas and initiate policies that improve literacy and community participation for insurance programs. Background: Traditional medicine (TM) plays a vital role in the Ghanaian health system by serving as an alternative healthcare delivery system for the majority of people. However, the quality of practice and level of TM practitioners' involvement in the integration of TM into the health system have not been fully investigated., Methods: This study employed a phenomenological qualitative study design to explore the perceptions, experiences and recommendations of TM practitioners in the Ashanti region regarding TM integration. Data were collected through individual interviews with 17 participants., Results: Participants had knowledge about TM integration. They cited effective alternative healthcare delivery and improved patient outcomes as the key benefits of TM integration. However, they reported a shortage of approved TM products, poor visibility of TM integration and poor relational coordination of care as factors hampering the integration. Participants recommended improved interprofessional relationships, provision of financial support and improved publicity of TM as possible strategies to enhance TM integration in Ghana., Conclusions: The findings of the study clearly demonstrate that the Ghanaian health system is currently operating a consumer-led, tolerant health system with a parallel (between orthodox and TM practitioners) healthcare delivery model. Background: Ending maternal mortality has been a significant global health priority for decades. Many sub-Saharan African countries introduced user fee removal policies to attain this goal and ensure universal access to health facility delivery. However, many women in Nigeria continue to deliver at home. We examined the reasons for home birth in settings with free maternal healthcare in Southwestern and North Central Nigeria., Methods: We adopted a fully mixed, sequential, equal-status design. For the quantitative study, we drew data from 211 women who reported giving birth at home from a survey of 1227 women of reproductive age who gave birth in the 5 y before the survey. The qualitative study involved six focus group discussions and 68 in-depth interviews. Data generated through the interviews were coded and subjected to inductive thematic analysis, while descriptive statistics were used to analyse the quantitative data., Results: Women faced several barriers that limited their use of skilled birth attendants. These barriers operate at multiple levels and could be grouped as economic, sociocultural and health facility-related factors. Despite the user fee removal policy, lack of transportation, birth unpreparedness and lack of money pushed women to give birth at home. Also, sociocultural reasons such as hospital delivery not being deemed necessary in the community, women not wanting to be seen by male health workers, husbands not motivated and husbands' disapproval hindered the use of health facilities for childbirth., Conclusions: This study has demonstrated that free healthcare does not guarantee universal access to healthcare. Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mineral density leading to enhanced bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk. The focus of this case-control study was to identify significant socioeconomic risk factors of osteoporosis in Pakistani women and examine how the risk increases for different levels of risk factors. A case-control study was conducted from November 2018 to August 2019 in two main hospitals in Faisalabad, Pakistan. Multiple logistic regression was used to explore the significant risk factors of osteoporosis and how the risk increases in cases (cases = 120) as compared to the control group (controls = 120) in the presence of these risk factors. The mean age ± standard deviation for cases and controls was 59.62 ± 10.75 and 54.27 ± 10.09, respectively. The minimum and maximum ages were 36 and 80 years, respectively. In addition to age, bone fracture, family history, regular physical activity, family size, use of meat, type of birth, breastfeeding, premature menopause, loss of appetite, and use of anticoagulants were significant risk factors with p -values less than 0.05. The risk prediction model with significant risk factors was a good fit with a p -value of 0.28, corresponding to the Hosmer-Lemeshow test value ( χ 2 = 9.78). Introduction: Premarital sexual intercourse (PSI) without adequate information and/or appropriate application of the relevant knowledge about sex before marriage, potentially has adverse effects on the sexual and reproductive health outcomes of vulnerable young women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study sought to examine the prevalence and predictors of PSI among young women aged 15-24 in SSA., Methods: Nationally representative cross-sectional data from 29 countries in SSA were extracted for the study. A weighted sample size of 87,924 never married young women was used to estimate the prevalence of PSI in each country. A multilevel binary logistic regression modelling approach was used to examine the predictors of PSI at p < 0.05., Results: The prevalence of PSI among young women in SSA was 39.4%. Young women aged 20-24 (aOR = 4.49, 95% CI = 4.34, 4.65) and those who had secondary/higher educational level (aOR = 1.63, 95% CI = 1.54, 1.72) were more likely to engage in PSI compared to those aged 15-19 and those with no formal education. However, young women who belonged to the Islamic religion (aOR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.56, 0.78); those who were working (aOR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.73, 0.78); belonged to the richest wealth index (aOR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.52, 0.58); were not exposed to radio at all (aOR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.81, 0.99); were not exposed to television at all (aOR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.46, 0.53); resided in rural areas (aOR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.70, 0.76); and those who were living in the East African sub-region (aOR = 0.32, 95% CI = 0.29, 0.35) were less likely to engage in PSI compared to those who were traditionalist, unemployed, belonged to the poorest wealth index, exposed to radio frequently, exposed to television frequently, resided in urban areas, and lived in the Southern Africa sub-region, respectively., Conclusion: Sub-regional variations in the prevalence of PSI exist amidst multiple risk factors among young women in SSA. Objective: The study examined high-risk fertility behaviour and its association with under-five undernutrition in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)., Design: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from 32 sub-Saharan African countries' Demographic and Health Surveys. A weighted sample of 110 522 mother-child pairs was included in final analysis. Multilevel binary logistic regression was used to examine the association between high-risk fertility behaviour and undernutrition. The results were presented using adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Setting: Thirty-two countries in SSA., Outcome Measure: Stunting, wasting, and underweight., Results: The pooled prevalence of stunting was 31.3%, ranging from 15.0% in Gabon to 51.7% in Burundi. Wasting was highest among children from Burkina Faso (19.1%) and lowest among those from South Africa (1.6%). The overall prevalence of wasting was 8.1%. The prevalence of underweight was 17.0%, with the highest among children in Niger (37.1%) and lowest in South Africa (4.8%). Mothers who gave birth at the age less than 18 years and those with short birth interval were more likely to have their children being stunted, wasted, and underweight. The odds of stunting and wasting were high among children born to women with high parity. Objective: The study assessed the prevalence of physical violence against pregnant women and its associated factors in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)., Design: We analysed cross-sectional data of 108971 women in sexual unions from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys of 26 countries in SSA. The predictors of physical violence were examined using a multilevel binary logistic regression. All the results were presented as adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Setting: Twenty-six countries in SSA., Participants: 108 971 women who had ever been pregnant., Outcome Measure: Physical violence during pregnancy., Results: Physical violence was identified in 6.0% of pregnant women in SSA. The highest prevalence (14.0%) was reported in South Africa, while Burkina Faso recorded the lowest (2.1%). Women who had primary (aOR=1.26, 95% CI=1.15, 1.38) and secondary education (aOR=1.15, 95% CI=1.01,1.32); those who were cohabiting (aOR=1.21, 95% CI=1.11, 1.32); those who were working (aOR=1.17, 95% CI=1.08, 1.28); and those whose partners had primary (aOR=1.15, 95% CI=1.04, 1.28) and secondary education (aOR=1.14, 95% CI=1.01, 1.28) were more likely to experience physical violence during pregnancy compared with those who had no formal education; those who were married; those who were not working, and those whose partners had no formal education, respectively. Moreover, women whose partners consumed alcohol (aOR=2.37, 95% CI=2.20, 2.56); those who had parity of four or more (aOR=2.06, 95% CI=1.57, 2.72); and those who perceived intimate partner violence (IPV) as a culturally accepted norm (aOR=1.55, 95% CI=1.44, 1.67) had higher odds of experiencing physical violence during pregnancy compared to those whose partners did not consume alcohol, those with parity zero, and those who did not perceive IPV as culturally accepted, respectively. On the contrary, women who were aged 35-39, those who were of the richest wealth index, and those in rural areas had reduced odds of experiencing physical violence during pregnancy., Conclusion: Based on the findings, community leaders are encouraged to liaise with law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce laws on gender-based violence by prosecuting perpetrators of IPV against pregnant women as a deterrent. Also, intensifying education on what constitutes IPV and the potential consequences on the health of pregnant women, their children, and their families will be laudable. The choice of caesarean section (CS) plays a significant role in maternal and neonatal health. However, suboptimal CS uptake suggests unmet obstetric care leading to adverse maternal and neonatal health. Considering that maternal health problems in Nigeria remain a public health problem, this present study aims to assess the prevalence and multilevel factors associated with caesarean section among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. Data from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey were analysed. Our analyses included 19,964 women of reproductive age, with their last birth within five years preceding the survey. Multilevel logistic regression analysis was carried out to examine the predictors of the caesarean section in Nigeria. The prevalence of CS among women of reproductive age in Nigeria was 3.11%. Women from the Yoruba ethnic group [aOR = 0.52; 95%(CI = (0.32-0.84)], with two children [aOR = 0.67; 95%(CI = 0.52-0.88)], three children [aOR = 0.49; 95%(CI = 0.36-0.66)], four children and above [aOR = 0.34; 95%(CI = 0.26-0.46)], those who practised Islam [aOR = 0.74; 95%(CI = (0.56-0.99)], and those that had a normal weighted baby [aOR = 0.73; 95%(CI = 0.60-0.99)] were less likely to report having a CS in Nigeria compared to those from Hausa/Fulani ethnic group, those who had one child, those who practised Christianity, and those who had a high weighted baby. Also, women residing in rural areas [aOR = 0.79; 95% (CI = (0.63-0.99)] and the South-South [aOR = 0.65; 95%(CI = (0.46-0.92)] were less likely to have CS compared to those residing in urban areas and North Central. The study concluded that several individual and community-level factors, such as religious belief, number of children, ethnicity, place of residence, and region of residence, were associated with CS utilisation in Nigeria. Background: Anaemia among women has been reported to be a significant contributor to hemorrhage, exacerbated risk of stillbirths, miscarriages, and maternal mortalities. Hence, understanding the factors associated with anaemia is imperative to develop preventive strategies. We examined the association between history of hormonal contraceptive use and risk of anaemia among women in sub-Saharan Africa., Methods: We analyzed data from the recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) of sixteen countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Countries with recent DHSs conducted from 2015 to 2020 were included in the study. A total of 88,474 women of reproductive age were included. We used percentages to summarize the prevalence of hormonal contraceptives and anaemia among women of reproductive age. We used multilevel binary logistic regression analysis to examine the association between hormonal contraceptives and anaemia. We presented the results using crude odds ratio (cOR) and adjusted odds ratios (aOR), with their respective 95 percent confidence intervals (95% CIs)., Results: On the average, 16.2% of women are using hormonal contraceptives and this ranged from 7.2% in Burundi to 37.7% in Zimbabwe. The pooled prevalence of anaemia was 41%, ranging from 13.5% in Rwanda to 58.0% in Benin. Women who used hormonal contraceptives were less likely to be anaemic compared to those who were not using hormonal contraceptives (aOR = 0.56; 95%CI = 0.53, 0.59). At the country-level, hormonal contraceptive use was associated with a reduced likelihood of anaemia in 14 countries, except for Cameroon and Guinea., Conclusion: The study underscores the importance of promoting the use of hormonal contraceptives in communities and regions that have a high burden of anaemia among women. Background: This study sought to investigate the association between urbanicity (rural-urban residency), the use of solid biomass cooking fuels and the risk of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) among children under the age of 5 in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)., Methods: Cross-sectional data from the most recent surveys of the Demographic and Health Survey Program conducted in 31 sub-Saharan African countries were pooled for the analysis. The outcome variables, cough and rapid short breath were derived from questions that asked mothers if their children under the age of 5 suffered from cough and short rapid breath in the past two weeks preceding the survey. To examine the associations, multivariable negative log-log regression models were fitted for each outcome variable., Results: Higher odds ratios of cough occurred among children in urban households that use unclean cooking fuel (aOR = 1.05 95% CI = 1.01, 1.08). However, lower odds ratios were observed for rural children in homes that use clean cooking fuel (aOR = 0.93 95% CI = 0.87, 0.99) relative to children in urban homes using clean cooking fuel. We also found higher odds ratios of short rapid breaths among children in rural households that use unclean cooking fuel compared with urban residents using clean cooking fuel (aOR = 1.12 95% CI = 1.08, 1.17)., Conclusion: Urbanicity and the use of solid biomass fuel for cooking were associated with an increased risk of symptoms of ARIs among children under five years in SSA. Thus, policymakers and stakeholders need to design and implement strategies that minimize children's exposure to pollutants from solid biomass cooking fuel. Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the associated factors and changes in childhood vaccination coverage over time in Bangladesh., Methods: Bangladesh's Demographic and Health Surveys from 2011, 2014, and 2017-18 provided data for this study on vaccination coverage among children aged 12 to 35 months. For three survey periods, multilevel binary logistic regression models were employed., Results: The overall prevalence (weighted) of full vaccination among children aged 12-35 months were 86.17% in 2011, 85.13% in 2014, and 89.23% in 2017-18. Children from families with high wealth index, mothers with higher education, and over the age of 24 and who sought at least four ANC visits, as well as children from urban areas were more likely to receive full vaccination. Rangpur division had the highest change rate of vaccination coverage from 2011 to 2014 (2.26%), whereas Sylhet division had the highest change rate from 2014 to 2017-18 (34.34%)., Conclusion: To improve immunization coverage for Bangladeshi children, policymakers must integrate vaccine programs, paying special attention to mothers without at least a high school education and families with low wealth index. Background: Diarrhoea remains the major cause of morbidity and mortality of children under five years in Africa. Several studies have shown that inadequate and unsafe water, lack of sanitation, and poor hygiene practices are complex issues for different pathogens and accountable for the occurrence of diarrhoea diseases. We assessed the combined effect of household's source of drinking water and type of toilet facility and residential wellbeing on the incidence of childhood diarrhoea in 33 Sub-Saharan Africa countries while accounting for relevant compositional and contextual factors., Methods: The 2010-2019 datasets from the Demographic and Health Surveys were drawn for analyses. The outcome variable used in this study was the incidence of childhood diarrhoea. Three negative log-log generalized linear regression models were then sequentially fitted to the data to examine the joint effect of household water and sanitation practices on child diarrhoea. The results were presented using crude odds ratios (CORs) and adjusted odds ratios (AORs) at 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Using ArcGIS software, maps were design to unveil the spatial distribution of key variables., Findings: Approximately 16% of the 307,741 mothers interviewed reported an incidence of diarrhoea disease among children under-five years in their households. The results showed that a household depending on an unimproved source of drinking water and with an unimproved type of toilet facility was not significantly associated with childhood diarrhoea. However, those with improved drinking water but an unimproved type of toilet facility had higher odds of reporting childhood diarrhoea (AOR = 1.020, 95% CI = 1.003-1-036) compared to those in households with both improved source of drinking water and type of toilet facility. Across the geographical regions, Eastern (aOR = 1.102, 95% CI = 1.084-1.120) and Central Africa (aOR = 1.102, 95% CI = 1.083-1.121) were more likely to experience child diarrhoea., Conclusion: Water and sanitation practices such as the source of drinking water and toilet facility, and geographic region had significant effects on childhood diarrhoea in sub-Saharan Africax. The findings suggest the need for multi-sectoral actions that recognise the geo-spatial and temporal characteristics identified in the study through regional to national policies. Women's ability to negotiate for safer sex has been found to be dependent on their household decision making power. However, there is paucity of studies investigating the association between women's household decision making power and safer sex negotiation in Ghana. Thus, we examined the association between women's household decision making autonomy and safer sex negotiation among Ghanaian women in sexual unions using the 2014 Ghana's Demographic and Health Survey. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, and multivariable logistic regression models were performed. Statistical significance was set at p < .05 at 95% confidence interval. The results showed high prevalence of safer sex negotiation among women with high household decision-making capacity (91.6%). Compared to women with low household decision making autonomy, those with high autonomy in household decision making were more likely to negotiate for safer sex (aOR = 2.06; CI = 1.32-3.21). Women aged 25-34 were more likely to negotiate for safer sex compared to those aged 15-24 (aOR = 1.50; CI = 1.07-2.11). Higher odds of safer sex negotiation were found among women with comprehensive HIV and AIDS knowledge (aOR = 1.49; CI = 1.09-2.05), women who had tested for HIV (aOR = 1.57; CI = 1.27-1.95) and those exposed to newspaper (aOR = 1.80; CI = 1.17-2.78) compared to those who had no comprehensive knowledge on HIV and AIDS, those who had never tested for HIV and those who were not exposed to newspaper, respectively. However, women who belonged to other ethnic groups and the Islamic religion had lower odds of safer sex negotiation compared to Akans (aOR = 0.68; CI = 0.48-0.96) and Christian women (aOR = 0.63; CI = 0.46-0.85). Women empowerment programmes need to be intensified to enable Ghanaian women with low household decision making autonomy to negotiate for safer sex with their partners. Persons with disabilities (PwDs) constitute about 16% of the global population and face many challenges in every society, including access to sexual and reproductive healthcare. The attitudes of healthcare providers (HPs) exert a major influence on PwDs accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH). A sequential explanatory mixed methods design was used to investigate the attitudes and perceptions of HPs towards PwDs and SRH delivery in Ghana's Ashanti region. Quantitative data analysis indicated that overall, 82% of HPs had received information on disability-related issues and had relatively positive attitude towards PwDs, which varied across sub-scales of the Attitude Towards Disability score and associated with their sociodemographic characteristics. HPs faced several challenges in SRH services delivery to PwDs, which included a lack of funding and training, and inadequate staff. Inductive thematic analysis of the qualitative data revealed eight overarching themes. The findings revealed that HPs had prejudice about the mental and sexual health abilities of PwDs. Inadequate skill set, inadequate resources, and limited funding were major challenges identified. Nonetheless, compassion and benevolence towards PwDs, improvision, economic and educational support, awareness creation, and referrals were strategies adopted to overcome these challenges. Mandatory training of HPs is recommended to ensure improved SRH service delivery to PwDs. Future research could explore the perceptions and coping strategies of PwDs.

Gender inequalities and social mores normalise gender-based violence in many settings. The goal of this study was to gain a more in-depth understanding of romantic and sexual relationships, consent, and gender-based violence among university students in Ghana. We used focus group discussions to explore individual factors influencing romantic and sexual relationships among students enrolled at a university in the Central Region of the country to inform the development and tailoring of future interventions. During a series of four focus group discussions comprising students recruited via convenience and snowball sampling, participants were asked to reflect on the nature of their romantic and sexual relationships. Demographic data and experiences of gender-based violence were also collected. The focus groups discussions were recorded and transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Five themes were developed from the data: (1) traditional gender roles; (2) self-control; (3) relationship-based consent; (4) cheating; and (5) non-verbal communication. This study suggests negative health and social ramifications of violence will continue until there is a resolution of conflicting social norms that result in different expectations about how men and women can address their sexual needs. Future programming and interventions for gender-based violence prevention should reflect on their impact across all ecological levels.

Background: Out of pocket payment for healthcare remains a barrier to accessing health care services in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Women's decision-making autonomy may be a strategy for healthcare access and utilization in the region. There is a dearth of evidence on the link between women's decision-making autonomy and health insurance enrollment. We, therefore, investigated the association between married women's household decision making autonomy and health insurance enrollment in SSA., Methods: Demographic and Health Survey data of 29 countries in SSA conducted between 2010 and 2020 were analyzed. Both bivariate and multilevel logistic regression analyses were carried out to investigate the relationship between women's household decision-making autonomy and health insurance enrollment among married women. The results were presented as an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI)., Results: The overall coverage of health insurance among married women was 21.3% (95% CI; 19.9-22.7%), with the highest and lowest coverage in Ghana (66.7%) and Burkina Faso (0.5%), respectively. The odds of health insurance enrollment was higher among women who had household decision-making autonomy (AOR = 1.33, 95% CI; 1.03-1.72) compared to women who had no household decision-making autonomy. Other covariates such as women's age, women's educational level, husband's educational level, wealth status, employment status, media exposure, and community socioeconomic status were found to be significantly associated with health insurance enrollment among married women., Conclusion: Health insurance coverage is commonly low among married women in SSA. Women's household decision-making autonomy was found to be significantly associated with health insurance enrollment. Background: Previous studies have demonstrated that exposure to interparental violence is associated with intimate partner violence justification in a variety of contexts. In this study, we examined the association between exposure to interparental violence and justification of intimate partner violence among women in Papua New Guinea., Methods: We used data from the 2016-18 Papua New Guinea Demographic and Health Survey. We included 2839 women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in a sexual union (married and cohabiting) in the study. We used a multivariable binary multilevel regression analysis to examine the association between interparental violence and justification of intimate partner violence. We presented the results of the regression analysis using crude odds ratio (cOR) and adjusted odds ratios (aORs), with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: Women exposed to interparental violence were 1.26 (95%CI = 1.05, 1.53) times more likely to justify intimate partner violence than those who were not exposed. Women who resided in the Highlands (aOR = 2.50, 95%CI = 1.78, 3.51), Momase (aOR = 1.96, 95%CI = 1.40, 2.75), and Islands (aOR = 1.42, 95%CI = 1.01, 1.99) were more likely to justify intimate partner violence compared to those in the Southern region. Women who were exposed to one (aOR = 1.38, 95%CI = 1.06, 1.82) mass media were more likely to justify intimate partner violence compared to those who had no exposure to mass media. On the other hand, women aged 25-34 years (aOR = 0.66, 95%CI = 0.48, 0.91) and 35-49 years (aOR = 0.66, 95%CI = 0.44, 0.97) were less likely to justify intimate partner violence compared to those aged 15-24 years., Conclusions: Our study has shown that exposure to interparental violence is a predictor of intimate partner violence justification. This study suggests the need for conscious and continuous efforts to identify and assist women who have been exposed to interparental violence to help prevent its transition to later life. Policies and interventions should be developed and implemented to curtail children's exposure to domestic violence in their households. Also, laws and policies need to condemn any violence and demystify community justification and acceptance of intimate partner violence, taking into consideration the significant sociodemographic characteristics of the women highlighted in the study., (© 2023. Objective: We examined the association between partner alcohol consumption and the experience of intimate partner violence among women in Papua New Guinea., Design: We performed a cross-sectional analyses of data extracted from the 2016-2018 Papua New Guinea Demographic and Health Survey. We included 3319 women in sexual unions. Multilevel binary logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between partner alcohol consumption and intimate partner violence, controlling for the covariates. Results from the regression analysis were presented using the crude odds ratios (cORs) and adjusted odds ratios (aORs), with 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Setting: Papua New Guinea., Participants: Women aged 15-49 years in sexual unions., Outcome Measures: Physical, emotional, and sexual violence., Results: The prevalence of physical, emotional and sexual violence among women in sexual unions in Papua New Guinea were 45.9% (42.4 to 47.7), 45.1% (43.4 to 46.8) and 24.3% (22.9 to 25.8), respectively. The level of partner alcohol consumption was 57.3%. Women whose partners consumed alcohol were more likely to experience physical violence (aOR=2.86, 95% CI=2.43 to 3.37), emotional violence (aOR=2.89, 95% CI=2.44 to 3.43) and sexual violence (aOR=2.56, 95% CI=2.08 to 3.16) compared with those whose partners did not consume alcohol., Conclusion: This study found a relatively high prevalence of intimate partner violence among women in Papua New Guinea. Most importantly, this study found partner alcohol consumption to be significantly and positively associated with intimate partner violence. Background: High-risk fertility behaviours such as too early or advanced age at delivery, shorter birth interval, birth order and a higher number of live births to a woman often lead to adverse maternal and child health outcomes. We assessed high-risk fertility behaviours and their associated factors among women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)., Methods: Data on 200 716 women pooled from the demographic and health surveys of 27 countries conducted between 2010 and 2020 in SSA were analysed. High-risk fertility behaviour from four indicators, mother aged <18 years at the time of delivery; mother aged >34 years at the time of delivery; mother of a child born after a short birth interval (<24 months) and mother of high parity (>3 children), was derived. Multi-level multi-variable logistic regression analyses were carried out and the results were presented as adjusted odds ratios at 95% confidence interval., Results: Women who were in polygamous marriages had higher odds of single and multiple high-risk fertility behaviour compared with their counterparts who were in monogamous marriages. Women with middle or high maternal decision-making power had higher odds of single and multiple high-risk fertility behaviours compared with those with low decision-making power. Single and multiple high-risk fertility behaviours were lower among women with access to family planning, those with at least primary education and those whose partners had at least primary education compared with their counterparts who had no access to family planning, those with no formal education and those whose partners had no formal education., Conclusion: Family structure, women's decision-making power, access to family planning, women's level of education and partners' level of education were identified as predictors of high-risk fertility behaviours in SSA. These findings are crucial in addressing maternal health and fertility challenges. Background: Child marriage among women has become a major threat to the rights of women, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The marriage of girls below age 18 y is a major public and global health challenge. Therefore, this study examined the spatial pattern and factors associated with child marriage in Nigeria., Methods: The data were sourced from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. The study included a total of 4283 young women aged 20-24 y. The findings were provided in the form of spatial maps and adjusted ORs (aORs) with 95% confidence interval (CI)., Results: Hotspot areas for child marriage in Nigeria were located in Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Niger, Borno, Gombe, and Adamawa. The prevalence of child marriage in Nigeria was 41.50%. The likelihood of child marriage in Nigeria was high among those currently working (aOR=1.31; 95% CI 1.11 to 1.55) compared with young women who were not working. On the other hand, young women whose partners had secondary education and above (aOR=0.57; 95% CI 0.45 to 0.73) were less likely to report child marriage in Nigeria compared with those whose partners had no education., Conclusions: The findings of the study indicate that there are several hotspots in Nigeria that need to be targeted when implementing interventions aimed at eliminating child marriage in the country., (© The Author(s) 2022. Sexual violence has proven to be associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We examined the association between sexual violence and self-reported STIs (SR-STIs) among women in sexual unions in 15 sub-Saharan African countries. This was a cross-sectional study involving the analysis of data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) from 15 countries in SSA. A total sample of 65,392 women in sexual unions were included in the final analysis. A multilevel binary logistic regression analysis was carried out and the results were presented using adjusted odds ratios (aOR) at 95% Confidence Interval (CI). Women who experienced sexual violence in the last 12 months were more likely to self-report STIs compared to those who did not experience sexual violence [aOR = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.59-1.94]. Compared to women in Angola, those who were in Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Liberia were more likely to self-report STIs while those in Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe were less likely to self-report STIs. The study has revealed variations in the country level regarding the prevalence of sexual violence and SR-STI in the last 12 months among women in sexual unions in the selected countries. This study has demostrated that sexual violence in the last 12 months is associated with SR-STIs among women in sexual unions. Moreover, factors that predict SR-STIs were observed in this study. Policymakers and agencies that matter could consider the factors identified in this study when designing policies or strengthening existing ones to tackle STIs among women in SSA. To accelerate the progress towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3, its imperative efforts and interventions must be intensified in SSA to reduce sexual violence which will go a long way to reduce SR-STIs among women.

Background: Contraceptives afford individuals the opportunity to meet their reproductive needs and reduce maternal mortality. We aimed at assessing the trend and inequalities of contraceptive use in Ghana based on the 1993-2014 Ghana Demographic and Health Surveys., Methods: We used the World Health Organization's Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (HEAT) software in analysing the data. We adopted two approaches for the analysis. First, we disaggregated inequalities in contraceptive use using four equity stratifiers: wealth index, education, residence, and region. Second, summary measures (D), (PAR), (R), and (PAF) were also employed. A 95% uncertainty interval (UI) was constructed for point estimates to measure statistical significance., Results: Contraceptive prevalence increased from 20.3% in 1993 to 26.7% in 2014. The contraceptive prevalence among women aged 20-49 increased from 20.6% [95% UI = 19.1, 22.3] in 1993 to 26.8% [95% UI = 24.9, 28.9] in 2014 and this exceeded the increase that was recorded among those aged 15-19 (from 13% [95 UI = 8.7, 19] to 18% [95% UI = 11.5, 28.6]), in the same period. It was evident that substantial inequality existed with respect to contraceptive use, from 1993 to 2014, with widest inequality occurring in 2003 (PAF = 2.7, 95% UI = -16.6-21.9; D = 17.4, 95% UI = 12.7-22.1). In terms of wealth index, the least inequality was observed in 2014 (PAR = 1.3, 95% UI = -1-3.6; D = 5.9, 95% UI = -0.1-12). Regarding education, the widest inequality occurred in 1993 (PAF = 138.6, UI = 132.1-145.1; D = 40.1, 95% UI = 34.4-45.9). With place of residence, the widest gap in inequality occurred in 1993 (PAF = 51.2, 95% UI = 46.2-56.3; D = 15.3, 95% UI = 11.8-18.7). There was inequality in contraceptive use with respect to sub-national regions. In 2014, the Difference (D = 21, 95% UI = 14.6-27.4) and the PAF (PAF = 20.9, 95% UI = 11.2 - 30.5) measures revealed substantial absolute and relative regional inequality between the regions., Conclusion: There was a steady increase in contraceptive use from 20.3% in 1993 to 26.7% in 2014. Nevertheless, the percentage change is minimal. The trends of inequality indicate that inequalities in contraceptive use was evident across the dimension of age, place of residence, wealth index, education, and region. Yet, there was a substantial reduction in inequalities related to contraceptive use in 2014. Therefore, targeting adolescents, women in rural areas, low wealth quintile, and those with no formal education is key to substantially improving contraceptive use across the country., (© 2023. Introduction: Evidence suggests that childhood exposure to interparental violence increases the risk of intimate partner violence (IPV) experience or perpetration in adolescence or adulthood. However, it is unclear if exposure to interparental violence increases the risk of IPV among women in Papua New Guinea. This study, therefore, seeks to fill this gap in the literature by examining the association between childhood exposure to interparental violence and IPV among women in Papua New Guinea., Methods: We used data from the most recent 2016-18 Papua New Guinea Demographic and Health Survey. We included 3,512 women in our analyses. Past-year experience of IPV was the outcome variable in this study. Exposure to interparental violence was the key explanatory variable. We used a multilevel binary logistic regression to examine the association between exposure to interparental violence and IPV., Results: We found a higher probability of experiencing IPV among women exposed to interparental violence [aOR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.13, 1.86] relative to women who were not exposed. Furthermore, we found that women living in rural areas had a lower likelihood of IPV experience [aOR = O.50, 95% CI = 0.32, 0.80] compared to those in urban settings. Finally, a greater odd of IPV experience was found among women staying in the Highlands Region [aOR = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.06, 1.96] compared to those staying in the Southern Region., Conclusion: Exposure to interparental violence was found to be significantly associated with IPV among women in Papua New Guinea. The findings of this study suggest the need for proven operational strategies to reduce IPV, such as improving anti-IPV laws in Papua New Guinea. We recommend the development and implementation of intercession strategies to reduce the experience and justification of violence among women exposed to interparental violence. Background: Adolescent girls and young women are vulnerable populations who are at risk of several adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes, including unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, unsafe abortions, and death from pregnancy-related complications. In this study, we examined the correlates of repeat pregnancies among adolescent girls and young women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)., Methods: We extracted data from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) of 31 countries in SSA. Countries whose surveys were conducted from 2010 to 2020 were included in the study. A total of 108,572 adolescent girls and young women (15-24 years) were included in the study. We used a multilevel mixed-effect binary logistic regression analysis to examine the correlates of repeat pregnancies among adolescent girls and young women in SSA., Results: We found that adolescent girls and young women aged 20-24 [aOR = 2.36; 95%CI = 2.22, 2.51], those married [aOR = 7.52; 95%CI = 6.81, 8.30], living with a partner [aOR = 7.51; 95%CI = 6.87, 8.21], and those who had sexual intercourse before age 20 [aOR = 1.41; 95%CI = 1.33, 1.51] had higher odds of experiencing repeat pregnancies compared to those aged 15-19, those never in a union, those whose first sexual intercourse occurred at age 20 and above, respectively. Respondents exposed to listening to radio [aOR = 1.12; 95%CI = 1.06, 1.18] and those who justified intimate partner violence [aOR=1.13; 95%CI = 1.07, 1.19] had higher odds of experiencing repeat pregnancies compared to those who never listened to radio and those who did not justify intimate partner violence, respectively. Young women who had attained secondary or higher educational level [aOR = 0.83; 95%CI = 0.78, 0.90], those exposed to reading newspaper or magazine [aOR = 0.90; 95%CI = 0.82, 0.98], those residing in rural areas [aOR = 0.92; 95%CI = 0.86, 0.98], and those belonging to the richer [aOR = 0.87; 95%CI = 0.80, 0.95] and richest [aOR = 0.68; 95%CI = 0.61, 0.76] wealth quintile were less likely to experience repeat pregnancies., Conclusion: The correlates of repeat pregnancies include age, age at first sexual intercourse, marital status, exposure to media, justification of intimate partner violence, wealth index, educational attainment, and place of residence. The findings underscore the need for governments and policymakers in SSA to implement policies that target the most at-risk groups: those with no formal education, the poor, and adolescent girls. Background: In low-resource settings with weak health systems, the WHO recommends clinical breast examination (CBE) as the most cost-effective breast screening modality for women. Evidence shows that biennial CBE leads to significant downstaging of breast cancer in all women. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in Lesotho with a weaker healthcare system and a low breast cancer screening rate. This study investigated the prevalence and factors associated with the uptake of CBE among women of reproductive age in Lesotho., Methods: This study used cross-sectional data from the 2014 Lesotho Demographic and Health Survey. A sample of 6584 reproductive-age women was included in this study. We conducted both descriptive and multivariable logistic regression analyses. The study results were presented in frequencies, percentages, and adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with their corresponding confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: The prevalence of CBE uptake was 9.73% (95% CI: 8.91, 10.61). Women who were covered by health insurance (aOR = 2.31, 95% CI [1.37, 3.88]), those who were pregnant (aOR = 2.34, 95% CI [1.64, 3.35]), those who had one to three children (aOR = 1.81, 95% CI [1.29,2.52]), and women who frequently read newspapers or magazines (aOR = 1.33, 95% CI [1.02,1.72]) were more likely to undergo CBE than their counterparts. Women who were aware of breast cancer (aOR = 2.54, 95% CI [1.63,3.97]), those who have ever had breast self-examination (BSE) within the last 12 months prior to the study (aOR = 5.30, 95% CI [4.35,6.46]), and those who visited the health facility in the last 12 months prior to the study (aOR = 1.57, 95% CI [1.27,1.95]) were also more likely to undergo CBE than their counterparts. Women residing in the Qacha's-nek region (aOR = 0.42, 95% CI [0.26,0.67]) were less likely to undergo CBE than those in the Botha-bothe region., Conclusion: The study found a low prevalence of CBE uptake among reproductive-age women in Lesotho. Factors associated with CBE uptake include health insurance coverage, being pregnant, those who had one to three children, exposure to media, breast cancer awareness, ever had BSE, and those who visited a health facility. In recent times, intimate partner has gained significant attention. However, there is limited evidence on the spatial distribution and predictors of intimate partner violence. Therefore, this study examined the spatial distribution and predictors of intimate partner violence in South Africa. The dataset for this study was obtained from a cross-sectional survey of the 2016 South Africa Demographic and Health Survey. We adopted both spatial and multilevel analyses to show the distribution and predictors of intimate partner violence among 2,410 women of reproductive age who had ever experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetime in South Africa. The spatial distribution of intimate partner violence in South Africa ranged from 0 to 100 percent. Western Cape, Free State, and Eastern Cape were predicted areas that showed a high proportion of intimate partner violence in South Africa. The likelihood of experiencing intimate partner violence among women in South Africa was high among those who were cohabiting [aOR = 1.41; 95%(CI = 1.10-1.81)] and women who were previously married [aOR = 2.09; 95%(CI = 1.30-3.36)], compared to women who were currently married. Women who lived in households with middle [aOR = 0.67; 95%(CI = 0.48-0.95)] and richest wealth index [aOR = 0.57; 95%(CI = 0.34-0.97)] were less likely to experience lifetime intimate partner violence compared to those of the poorest wealth index. The study concludes that there is a regional variation in the distribution of intimate partner violence in South Africa. A high prevalence of intimate partner violence was found among women who live in the Western Cape, Free State, and Eastern Cape. Background: Adverse obstetric outcomes have been commonly associated with early childbearing in many low-and middle-income countries. Despite this evidence, scholarly information on early childbearing in the sub-Saharan African region, especially Nigeria, is limited. This study examines the predictors of young maternal age at first birth among women of reproductive age in Nigeria using multi-level analysis., Methods: Data from the most recent Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey conducted in 2018 were analyzed. A total of 29,949 women of reproductive age (15-49 years) were considered for the study. Descriptive statistics using weighted percentage and chi-square test of independence (χ2) were first used to describe the variables of interest. This procedure was followed by a multilevel analysis of factors associated with young maternal age at first birth in Nigeria at p<0.05 level of significance., Results: Approximately 36.80% of the sample population had their first birth before the age of 18. Mothers residing in the North-East region [aOR = 1.26; 95% (CI = 1.13-1.42)] and practicing Islam [aOR = 1.17; 95% (CI = 1.05-1.29] were more likely to have their first birth before the age of 18 than those in the North-Central region and those practicing Christianity. Living in communities with medium literacy level [aOR = 0.90; 95% (CI = 0.82-0.99)] and high literacy level [aOR = 0.71; 95% (CI = 0.62-0.81)], being within richest wealth index [aOR = 0.61; 95% (CI = 0.53-0.71)] and being Yoruba [aOR = 0.46; 95% (CI = 0.39-0.56)] were associated with lower odds of young maternal age at first birth., Conclusion: More than one-third of women of reproductive age in Nigeria had given birth to their first child before 18 years. The continuous increase in the prevalence of hypertension in Ghana has led to various interventions aimed at controlling the disease burden. Nonetheless, these interventions have yielded poor health outcomes. Subsequently, the Pan-African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR), established a 10-point action plan for inclusion in policies to aid control of hypertension. This scoping review assessed the adherence of health policies to the 10-point action plan towards hypertension control/reduction in Ghana. Eight health policies met the inclusion criteria and were assessed. The programme evaluation and policy design framework were used for synthesis and analysis of extracted data. Overall, there was poor adherence to hypertension control observed in the policies. Specifically, there were low levels of integrating hypertension control/reduction measures, a poor task-sharing approach, and poor financial resource allocations to tackle hypertension control/reduction in most of the policies. There was also low support for research to produce evidence to guide future interventions. For Ghana to achieve the global target of reducing hypertension by the year 2025, its health policies must adhere to evidence-based interventions in hypertension management/control. The study recommends a follow-up study among hypertension patients and healthcare professionals to evaluate the factors militating against hypertension management/control in Ghana.

Background: Mother and newborn skin-to-skin contact (SSC) plays a key role in breastfeeding practices of mothers. In this study, we examined the association between mother and newborn SSC and timely initiation of breastfeeding in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)., Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized nationally representative data from the Demographic and Health Surveys of 17 countries in SSA from 2015 to 2020. Multilevel binary logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between mother and newborn SSC and timely initiation of breastfeeding. The results are presented using adjusted odds ratios (aOR), with 95% confidence interval (CI)., Results: The pooled prevalences of mother and newborn SSC and timely initiation of breastfeeding were 45.68% (95% CI = 34.12-57.23) and 62.89% (95% CI = 55.67-70.11), respectively. Mothers who practiced newborn SSC were more likely to practice timely initiation of breastfeeding compared to those who did not practice SSC [aOR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.58, 1.78] and this persisted after controlling for all the covariates [aOR = 1.38, 95% CI = 1.29, 1.47]. At the country level, mother and newborn SSC increased the odds of timely initiation of breastfeeding in Angola [aOR = 1.99, 95% CI = 1.44, 2.76], Cameroon [aOR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.02, 1.99], Ethiopia [aOR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.16, 2.28], Guinea [aOR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.10, 2.60], Liberia [aOR = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.33, 3.12], Malawi [aOR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.02, 2.12], Mali [aOR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.10, 1.84], Sierra Leone [aOR = 1.87, 95% CI = 1.23, 2.83], South Africa [aOR = 2.59, 95% CI = 1.41, 4.76], Tanzania [aOR = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.27, 2.01], Uganda [aOR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.02, 1.99], Zambia [aOR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.50, 2.30], and Zimbabwe [aOR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.24, 2.21]., Conclusion: The prevalence of SCC was relatively low but timely initiation of breastfeeding was high. Mother and newborn SSC is a strong predictor of timely initiation of breastfeeding in SSA. Background: Today, an estimated 7.3% (50 million) of all children <5 y of age suffer from wasting, with more burden in African countries including Guinea. Investigating inequalities in childhood wasting is essential for designing efficient programs and interventions, but no related evidence exists in Guinea. This study aimed to examine the trends in the prevalence of childhood wasting and the extent of sex, socio-economic and geographic-based disparities in Guinea., Methods: Data from the 1999, 2005 and 2012 Guinea Demographic and Health Surveys and the 2016 Guinea Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, with a total of 16 137 children <5 y of age were included for analysis. For inequality analysis, we used the 2019 updated World Health Organization Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (HEAT) software. Inequality was measured using four summary measures (difference [D], population attributable risk [PAR], ratio [R] and population attributable fraction [PAF]) for five equity stratifiers (economic status, education, place of residence, sex and subnational region). We computed 95% confidence intervals (CIs) around the points estimates to measure statistical significance., Results: The findings revealed a pro-rich (R=1.68 [95% CI 1.11 to 2.24]), pro-urban (PAR=-1.04 [95% CI -1.90 to -0.18]) and subnational region (D=8.11 [95% CI 4.85 to 11.36]) inequalities in childhood wasting across all surveys. Except in 2005, education-based disparities (PAF=-18.2 [95% CI -36.10 to -0.26]) were observed across all survey years, but not sex-based disparities. An approximately constant inequality pattern was seen across all dimensions., Conclusions: This study showed inequalities in childhood wasting in Guinea with a disproportionately higher risk of wasting among children from disadvantaged subpopulations/mothers, including uneducated, poorest/poor, rural residents and regions. Policies that target disadvantaged populations need to be considered in order to ensure social protection, access to a wholesome diet and universal and quality health services., (© The Author(s) 2022. Women's ability to negotiate for safer sex has effects on their sexual and reproductive health. This study investigated the association between safer sex negotiation and parity among women in sub-Saharan Africa. The data were sourced from the Demographic and Health Surveys of 28 sub-Saharan African countries conducted from 2010 to 2019. A total of 215,397 women aged 15-49 were included in the study. Multilevel logistic analysis was conducted to examine the association between safer sex negotiation and parity among women in sub-Saharan Africa. The results were presented as adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and the significance level set at p <0.05. The overall prevalences of safer sex negotiation and high parity among women in sub-Saharan Africa were 82.7% and 52.1%, respectively. The prevalence of high parity ranged from 32.3% in Chad to 72.1% in Lesotho. The lowest prevalence of safer sex negotiation was in Chad (16.8%) while the highest prevalence was recorded in Rwanda (99.7%). Women who had the capacity to negotiate for safer sex were less likely to have high parity compared with those who had no capacity to negotiate for safer sex (aOR = 0.78, CI: 0.75-0.81). Other factors that were associated with high parity were age, educational level, marital status, exposure to media, contraceptive use, religion, wealth quintile, sex of household head, and place of residence. The study identified significant association between safer sex negotiation and high parity among women of reproductive age in sub-Saharan Africa. It is worth noting that women's ability to negotiate for safer sex could reduce high parity among women in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, policies and programmes aimed at birth control or reducing high parity among women could be targeted at improving their capacity to negotiate for safer sex through education.

Two commonly linked harmful practices that negatively impact the health of girls and women in sub-Saharan Africa, and threaten their development and quality of life, are female genital mutilation and girl-child marriage. The central focus of the study was to investigate the association between female genital mutilation and girl-child marriage in sub-Saharan Africa. Data from the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys of twelve sub-Sahara African countries were pooled. A total of 14,748 women aged 20-24 were included in the study. A multilevel logistic regression analysis was employed, with reported adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The overall prevalence of FGM in the twelve countries was 52.19%, with the highest prevalence in Guinea (97.17%). The overall prevalence of girl-child marriage in the twelve countries was 57.96%, with the highest prevalence in Chad (78.06%). Women who had never experienced female genital mutilation were less likely to experience girl-child marriage (aOR=0.76, CI=0.71-0.82) compared with those who had ever experienced female genital mutilation. Age 24 (aOR=0.47, CI=0.43-0.52), secondary/higher level of education (aOR=0.31, CI=0.28-0.35), richest wealth quintile (aOR=0.56, CI=0.47-0.66), exposure to mass media (aOR=0.81, CI=0.74-0.88) medium community literacy level (aOR=0.63, CI=0.57-0.69) and low community socioeconomic status (aOR=0.67, CI=0.49-0.92) were found to be protective against girl-child marriage. The findings reveal that female genital mutilation is associated with girl-child marriage in sub-Saharan Africa. The continued practice will adversely affect the reproductive health outcomes of girls in the sub-region. Policies aimed at eliminating female genital mutilation and girl-child marriage should focus on compulsory basic education, poverty alleviation and increasing access to mass media. Further, campaigns should cover more communities with lower literacy levels and medium socioeconomic status.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is predominant in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and has serious adverse effects on the physical, psychological, and reproductive health of those who experience it. For reproductive health outcomes, experiencing IPV has been linked to higher odds of unintended pregnancies that can result in abortion. Hence, we examined the association between IPV and pregnancy termination among women in SSA. This study used data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHSs) of 25 countries in SSA, which adopted a cross-sectional study design. Bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression models were used to examine the association between IPV and pregnancy termination. The results were presented as crude odds ratios (cORs) and adjusted odds ratios (aORs), with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The prevalence of IPV and pregnancy termination were 40.8% and 16.5%, respectively. The odds of pregnancy termination was higher among women who had experienced IPV [cOR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.52-1.61] compared to those who had never experienced IPV. This persisted after controlling for potential confounders [aOR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.51-1.61]. At the country level, IPV had a significant association with pregnancy termination in all the countries considered, except Sierra Leone and Namibia. These findings highlight the need for laws and policies to protect women from IPV in SSA, especially in the countries that recorded higher odds of IPV and pregnancy termination.

Background: Utilization of contraceptives remains low in several countries in sub-Saharan Africa despite evidence of its benefits. Several factors are associated with contraceptive use. However, little is known about the association between women's decision-making capacity and the utilization of contraceptives in Mali. This study sought to determine the effect of women's household decision-making power on contraceptive use in Mali., Methods: This study involved a cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2018 Mali Demographic and Health Survey. A total of 7893 married women were included in the final analysis. A binary logistic regression analysis was conducted with statistical significance set at p < 0.05., Results: Contraceptive use among married women in Mali was 17.1%. The odds of using contraceptives were higher among women with joint decision-making with their husbands on how to spend respondent's earnings [aOR = 1.79; 95% CI = 1.12, 2.85], joint decision-making with their husbands on what to do with their husband's earnings [aOR = 1.43; 95% CI = 1.12, 1.83], and joint decision-making with husband on large household purchases [aOR = 1.32; 95% CI = 1.10, 1.59]. Deciding alone on a visit to family or relatives was associated with lower odds of contraceptive use [AOR = 0.72; 95% CI = 0.58, 0.89]., Conclusion: The study has revealed that joint household decision-making is positively associated with contraceptive use. Therefore, to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3, the ministry for the advancement of women, children and families and related stakeholders must unearth strategies to empower women in joint decision-making and encourage men's involvement in contraceptive decision-making., (© 2022. Background: Vitamin A deficiency is considered a public health issue, particularly among children under 5 years. Vitamin A supplementation is among the ten key essential nutrition actions put in place to tackle malnutrition in children and helps to reduce under-five mortality by almost a quarter in Vitamin A deficient areas. We, therefore, examined inequalities in Vitamin A uptake among children 6-59 months in Ghana., Methods: We used data from the 2003, 2008, and 2014 Ghana Demographic and Health Surveys. The WHO's HEAT version 3.1 software was used for all the analyses. We adopted six equity stratifiers (maternal age, economic status, level of education, place of residence, sex of the child, and region) to disaggregate Vitamin A supplementation among children 6-59 months. Four measures were used to compute inequality, namely, Difference (D), Population Attributable Risk (PAR), Population Attributable Fraction (PAF) and Ratio (R)., Results: Over the 11-year period, the proportion of children who received Vitamin A supplementation declined from 78.6% to 65.2%. There were inequalities by maternal age, particularly in 2003 (D = 13.1, CI: 2.3, 23.9; PAF = 0.5, CI: - 12.3, 13.2). The widest inequality in Vitamin A supplementation by economic status was noted in 2003 (D = 8.8, CI: 3.3-14.2; PAF = 8.3, CI: 5, 11.5). In terms of sex, the indices revealed mild inequality in Vitamin A supplementation throughout the period studied. For education, the highest inequality was observed in 2014 (D = 11.6, CI: 6.0, 17.1), while the highest inequality in terms of place of residence was observed in 2003 (D = 4.0, CI: - 0.1-8.4). In the case of region, substantial inequality was noted in 2014 (D = 34.7, CI: 22.6, 46.8; PAF = 21.1, CI: 15.3, 27)., Conclusions: We conclude that there is a need for the government of Ghana to deploy targeted interventions to enhance the uptake of Vitamin A supplementation among the most disadvantaged subpopulations. Interventions targeted at these disadvantaged populations should be pro-poor in nature. In addition, the inequalities in the dimension of place of residence were mixed, favoring both rural and urban children at different points. This calls for a comprehensive and all-inclusive approach that enhances Vitamin A supplementation uptake in an equitable manner in both areas of residence.
