BackgroundGenetic association studies have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) susceptibility. The aim of this study was to identify HHIP genetic variants associated with COPD, pulmonary function, and serum and sputum HHIP protein levels in Mexican mestizo smokers.Materials and MethodsAssociation analysis was performed by carrying out a case–control study in Mexican mestizo smokers comprised of two groups: tobacco-smoking subjects with COPD (COPD-TS, n = 222) and smokers without COPD (SWOC, n = 333). We evaluated three SNPs (rs13147758, rs1828591, and rs13118928) in the HHIP gene. Allele discrimination was accomplished by qPCR using TaqMan probes, and determination of protein levels in the serum and sputum supernatants (SS) was performed using ELISA.ResultsStatistically significant differences were observed in the rs13147758 GG genotype (adjusted p = 0.014, OR = 1.95) and the rs13147758-rs1828591 GA haplotype (p = 6.6E-06, OR = 2.65) in the case–control comparison. HHIP protein levels were elevated in SS samples from the COPD-TS group compared to those from the SWOC group (p = 0.03). Based on genotype analysis, HHIP protein levels were lower in the serum samples of rs13147758 GG genotype carriers in the COPD-TS group than in the serum samples of rs13147758 GG genotype carriers from the SWOC group (p < 0.05), but there were no differences in the sputum samples.ConclusionThe rs13147758 GG genotype and the rs13147758-rs1828591 GA haplotype are associated with susceptibility to COPD. Furthermore, an association in protein levels was observed between the HHIP rs13147758 genotype and COPD in Mexican mestizo smokers.

La instauración de la ventilación mecánica no invasiva impacta de forma negativa el estado nutricional del paciente con insuficiencia respiratoria aguda. El deterioro de la musculatura respiratoria, secundaria a la prescripción de ayuno, afecta la capacidad para sostener niveles adecuados de ventilación.

The constant indicators of a future where human and non‐human CPSs relationships consistently interact and where they allow each other to navigate through a set of non‐trivial goals is an interesting and rich area of research, discovery, and practical work area. The evidence of convergence has rapidly gained clarity, demonstrating that we can use complex combinations of sensors, artificial intelligence, and data to augment human life and knowledge. To expand the knowledge in this area, we should explain how to model, design, validate, implement, and experiment with these complex systems of interaction, communication, and networking, which will be developed and explored in this special issue. This special issue will include ideas of the future that are relevant for understanding, discerning, and developing the relationship between humans and non‐human CPSs as well as the practical nature of systems that facilitate the integration between humans, agents, robots, machines, and sensors (HARMS).

Tibiofibular dislocation is uncommon, and it is related to sport injuries as a result of an external rotation trauma with the knee in fully flexed position, and foot pointing inwards and downwards. It causes pain in the anterolateral aspect of the knee, motion is complete but painful. Diagnosis is clinical and radiological. This entity goes unnoticed in the emergency department (60%), with functional and biomechanic consequences if diagnosis is no immediate. The objective is to describe diagnostic experience and orthopedic treatment of an unusual knee condition. We present a 23-year-old patient who fell while skating. He refers a proximal protuberance in the lateral face of the left leg, inflammation, pain, and limitation for knee extension.

El auge exportador en Chile ha transformado las ciudades del norte, generando un rápido crecimiento urbano, cambiando estructuras y promoviendo proyectos emblemáticos, entre ellos espacios públicos como el parque Kaukari en Copiapó. Este responde a una necesidad de la ciudad, debido a la deficiencia de los espacios públicos en cuanto a cantidad y calidad, pero también se puede interpretar como parte de una lógica de crecimiento urbano, intrínsecamente vinculada a la reproducción del capital y a la liquidez financiera. En este sentido, es que el presente trabajo tiene como propósito recuperar la propuesta conceptual de la “máquina de crecimiento”, cuestionando su aplicabilidad al caso de ciudades mineras, bajo la influencia de un auge exportador. Lo hace discutiendo el vínculo conceptual entre el impulso generado por el auge minero, la materialización de liquidez en inversión inmobiliaria y la construcción de espacios públicos. Para ilustrar esta reflexión se presenta un análisis exploratorio de la distribución espacio-temporal de los permisos de edificación en Copiapó, y de ciertos elementos del discurso sobre proyectos de espacio público, particularmente el Parque Kaukari. Los resultados permiten reconocer cómo los discursos sobre este parque en particular se articulan con la lógica de crecimiento además de una orientación de los permisos de edificación presentados por empresas hacia las grandes obras de infraestructura. Se puede suponer que esto produce beneficios económicos para ciertos agentes, pero también se construye una nueva centralidad y el proyecto parque promete cumplir con algunas exigencias de la ciudadanía.

La condrodisplasia de Grebe es un trastorno raro autosómico recesivo que pertenece al grupo de las osteocondrodisplasias. Clínicamente se caracteriza por un severo dismorfismo con una marcada micromelia y deformidad de las extremidades inferiores y superiores. Conocer este tipo de síndrome orienta a dar mejores diagnósticos y permite el diagnóstico diferencial con patologías más comunes, como la acondroplasia. Se presenta una paciente de 35 años con diagnóstico de síndrome de Grebe desde los 10 años. El síndrome de Grebe tiene una muy baja incidencia; por este motivo, es poco conocido por el cuerpo médico en general y aun menos para los ortopedistas, quienes serán los encargados de tratar a estos pacientes. Abstract Grebe syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that belongs to the group of osteochondrodysplasias. Clinically, it is characterized by severe dysmorphism, marked micromelia and deformities of the lower and upper limbs. Recognition of this syndrome allows to give better diagnoses and to establish a differential diagnosis with more common pathologies, such as achondroplasia. We present a 35-year-old woman with diagnosis of Grebe syndrome at the age of 10. Grebe syndrome has a very low incidence; therefore, it is unknown by general physicians and still less by orthopedic surgeons, who will treat these patients.

Supplemental oxygen (SO) increases survival in hypoxemic patients. In hypoxia, mammals respond by modulating O2-sensitive transducers that stabilize the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor-1-alpha (HIF-1α), which transactivates the genes that govern angiogenesis and metabolic pathways. Residing at high altitudes exposes millions of people to hypoxemia with potential adverse consequences on their health. We aimed to identify markers of hypoxemia that can be used in the evaluation of patients in addition to pulse oximetry and arterial blood gases, especially those that could respond after 1 month of oxygen use. We performed a prospective pilot study at 2240 m above sea level, with repeated measurements before and after (b/a) 1-month home oxygen therapy in 70 patients with lung diseases, of which 24/20 have COPD, 41/39 obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and 5/2 with interstitial lung diseases (ILD), all of them having chronic hypoxemia, as well as 70 healthy subjects as controls. Proteins evaluated included HIF-1α, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and erythropoietin (EPO). Among the main results, we found that hypoxemic patients had normal levels of HIF-1α but increased EPO compared with healthy controls. VEGF levels were heterogeneous in the sample studied, similar to the control group in COPD, slightly increased in OSA, and decreased in fibrosis. With oxygen treatment, the HIF-1α and EPO decreased in COPD and OSA but not in fibrosis, and VEGF remained constant over time. In conclusion, erythropoietin and HIF-1α identified hypoxemia initially and responded to oxygen. In pulmonary fibrosis, HIF-1α, EPO, and VEGF increased with oxygen therapy, which is likely linked to the disease’s pathogenesis and clinical course rather than hypoxemia.

El aprendizaje de los estudiantes de Medicina de Pregrado en ambiente simulado constituye una alternativa en la obtención de competencias técnicas y no técnicas. Objetivo: Desarrollar un fantoma e implementar un taller modular de entrenamiento de paracentesis abdominal en ambiente simulado para estudiantes de Medicina. Métodos: Se diseñaron y desarrollaron modelos para la realización de paracentesis abdominal en la Escuela de Diseño de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC) y se implementó un taller para alumnos de 4to año de Medicina de la PUC, utilizando un enfoque constructivista, sesiones de entrenamiento simulado con debriefing basadas en el modelo plus-delta y evaluación pre y post-procedimiento siguiendo los principios de evaluación para el aprendizaje. Resultados: Se desarrollaron 3 prototipos hasta llegar a un modelo definitivo de alta fidelidad basado en la percepción de 20 expertos. 237 alumnos asistieron a un taller de paracentesis abdominal en el Centro de Cirugía Experimental y Simulación Universidad Católica (UC). Este consistió en una actividad práctica grupal (7-8 alumnos por sesión) que incluyó: una evaluación pre-sesión, un vídeo instruccional, una demostración en tiempo real en el fantoma por parte de un docente, la realización guiada del procedimiento por parte de los alumnos, debriefing y cierre de la sesión. Conclusiones: Un modelo de enseñanza en ambiente simulado es posible de ser diseñado e implementado exitosamente en un centro educacional para estudiantes de Medicina de Pregrado. Este taller de paracentesis permite entrenar a los alumnos en la realización de paracentesis abdominal en un ambiente seguro para los alumnos y pacientes y puede ser implementado a bajo costo en otros centros o instituciones.

Due to the tendency to unify an oral and accusatory process system in Colombia, which is relatively recent compared to the consolidated one in its procedural history, this essay seeks to highlight the philosophical and literary foundations that underlie the apparent conflict between writing and orality, revealing the surreptitious question of the validity of legal norms, as well as their manifestations as models of social coercion. In order to do so, we examine some founding accounts of the law as a written prescription and as an oral prescription in order to analyze, later and from Foucault’s perspective, the legal system of ancient Greece and the birth of a contemporary orality structured from the written text.

Ibogaine is an atypical psychedelic alkaloid, which has been subject of research due to its reported ability to attenuate drug-seeking behavior. Recent work has suggested that ibogaine effects on alcohol self-administration in rats are related to the release of Glial cell Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF) in the Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA), a mesencephalic region which hosts the soma of dopaminergic neurons. Although previous reports have shown ibogaine’s ability to induce GDNF expression in rat midbrain, there are no studies addressing its effect on the expression of GDNF and other neurotrophic factors (NFs) such as Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) or Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in distinct brain regions containing dopaminergic neurons. In this work, we examined the effect of ibogaine acute administration on the expression of these NFs in the VTA, Prefrontal Cortex (PFC), Nucleus Accumbens (NAcc) and the Substantia Nigra (SN). Rats were i.p. treated with ibogaine 20 mg/kg (I20), 40 mg/kg (I40) or vehicle, and NFs expression was analyzed after 3 and 24 h. At 24 h an increase of the expression of the NFs transcripts was observed in a site and dose dependent manner. Only for I40, GDNF was selectively upregulated in the VTA and SN. Both doses elicited a large increase in the expression of BDNF transcripts in the NAcc, SN and PFC, while in the VTA a significant effect was found only for I40. Finally, NGF mRNA was upregulated in all regions after I40, while I20 showed a selective upregulation in PFC and VTA. Regarding protein levels, an increase of GDNF was observed in the VTA only for I40 but no significant increase for BDNF was found in all the studied areas. Interestingly, an increase of proBDNF was detected in the NAcc for both doses. These results show for the first time a selective increase of GDNF specifically in the VTA for I40 but not for I20 after 24 h of administration, which agrees with the effective dose found in previous self-administration studies in rodents. Further research is needed to understand the contribution of these changes to ibogaine’s ability to attenuate drug-seeking behavior.

This investigation frames on the exploration and experimentation of a new bio-based material, composed from the utilization of the fungi mycelium that decomposes wood and sub-products of the agricultural industry. In Chile, more than 3000 fungi species are registered (Mujica y Vergara, 1980), of which only 10% have being described. The geography and weather of this country stimulate the fungi development, especially in the central and the south side, which has the right variables for their life. For this research, the wood rotting fungus of the basidiomycetes division was collected, identified and reproduced. In particular with the Pleorotus ostreatus and the Trametes versicolor species. From this research it is intended to obtain a typology of possible bio-based materials. On the other side, the agricultural industry generate a big amount of waste. According to odepa, in the years 2015- 2016 the waste of cereal crop was of 2.1 millons tons. (odepa, 2016). The physical and mechanical properties of this material are being evaluated, for it application in design areas, defining it possible use.

The urban planning ideas proposed by Jane Jacobs in the 1960s remain relevant to this day, promoting a perspective on the relationship between urban morphology and the community that takes into consideration the experiences of the people themselves in the planning of cities. With Jacobs’ ideas in mind, this article seeks to explore the urban territory of Santiago, Chile, and to assess the vitality of its neighborhoods with their diversity of morphological, architectural, and spatial characteristics. The results reveal a spatial reality that differs considerably from typical interpretations of this and other cities across Latin America, characterized by a strong radial center–periphery dynamic interspersed with sub-centers of high vitality, mainly in the form of rural towns and villages that, over time, became absorbed into the urban fabric of Santiago, along with social housing estates located on what used to be the urban periphery.

With an elevation of 1000 m above sea level, once the coastal mountain range is crossed, the Atacama Desert receives the highest levels of solar radiation in the world. Global horizontal irradiations over 2500 kWh/(m2 year) and a cloudiness index below 3% were determined. However, this index rises to 45% in the coastal area, where the influence of the Pacific Ocean exists with a large presence of marine aerosols. It is on the coastal area that residential photovoltaic (PV) applications are concentrated. This work presents a study of the soiling impact on PV modules at the coastline of Atacama Desert. The current–voltage characteristics of two multicrystalline PV modules exposed to outdoor conditions were compared, while one of them was cleaned daily. Asymptotic behavior was observed in the accumulated surface dust density, over 6 months. This behavior was explained by the fact that as the glass became soiled, the probability of glass-to-particle interaction decreased in favor of a more likely particle-to-particle interaction. The surface dust density was at most 0.17 mg·cm−2 per month. Dust on the module led to current losses in the range of 19% after four months, which in turn produced a reduction of 13.5%rel in efficiency.

This work aimed to study the effects of static magnetic fields (SMFs) on cell cultures. A glass flask was filled with a liquid medium, which was surrounded by permanent magnets. Air was introduced through a tube to inject bubbles. Two magnet configurations, north and south, were used as perturbation. Scenedesmus obliquus and Nannochloropsis gaditana, growing in Medium 1 and 2, were subjected to the bubbly flow and SMFs. Differences between media were mainly due to conductivity (0.09 S/m for Medium 1 and 4.3 S/m for Medium 2). Joule dissipation ( P ) increased with the magnetic flux density ( B 0 ), being 4 orders of magnitude higher in Medium 2 than in 1. Conversely, the time constant ( τ P ) depended on B 0 , being nearly constant for Medium 1 and decreasing at 449 s/T for Medium 2. Dissipation occurred with the same τ P (235 s) in Medium 1 and 2 at B 0 = 0.5 T. In Species 1, the SMF effect was inhibitory. For Species 2, a higher enzymatic activity was observed. For superoxide dismutase, the relative difference was 78% with the north and 115% with the south configuration compared to the control values. For the catalase, differences of 29% with the north and 23% with the south configuration compared to control condition were obtained.

The lack of current treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) highlights the need of a comprehensive understanding of the biological mechanisms of the disease. A consistent neuropathological feature of ALS is the extensive inflammation around motor neurons and axonal degeneration, evidenced by accumulation of reactive astrocytes and activated microglia. Final products of inflammatory processes may be detected as a screening tool to identify treatment response. Herein, we focus on (a) detection of arachidonic acid (AA) metabolization products by lipoxygenase (LOX) and prostaglandin endoperoxide H synthase in SOD1G93A mice and (b) evaluate its response to the electrophilic nitro-oleic acid (NO2-OA). Regarding LOX-derived products, a significant increase in 12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12-HETE) levels was detected in SOD1G93A mice both in plasma and brain whereas no changes were observed in age-matched non-Tg mice at the onset of motor symptoms (90 days-old). In addition, 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) levels were greater in SOD1G93A brains compared to non-Tg. Prostaglandin levels were also increased at day 90 in plasma from SOD1G93A compared to non-Tg being similar in both types of animals at later stages of the disease. Administration of NO2-OA 16 mg/kg, subcutaneously (s/c) three times a week to SOD1G93A female mice, lowered the observed increase in brain 12-HETE levels compared to the non-nitrated fatty acid condition, and modified many others inflammatory markers. In addition, NO2-OA significantly improved grip strength and rotarod performance compared to vehicle or OA treated animals. These beneficial effects were associated with increased hemeoxygenase 1 (HO-1) expression in the spinal cord of treated mice co-localized with reactive astrocytes. Furthermore, significant levels of NO2-OA were detected in brain and spinal cord from NO2-OA -treated mice indicating that nitro-fatty acids (NFA) cross brain–blood barrier and reach the central nervous system to induce neuroprotective actions. In summary, we demonstrate that LOX-derived oxidation products correlate with disease progression. Overall, we are proposing that key inflammatory mediators of AA-derived pathways may be useful as novel footprints of ALS onset and progression as well as NO2-OA as a promising therapeutic compound.

Este reportaje investiga los cambios que se dieron en torno al libro infantil en la década del noventa en Uruguay: la forma de pensar al libro desde un punto de vista ético y estético, la manera de contar historias, los temas sobre los que escribir, la importancia de las ilustraciones, el auge de las ventas y el nuevo lugar de la literatura infantil en la cultura uruguaya. Asimismo, este trabajo busca reunir en una misma historia las voces de los diferentes protagonistas de ese cambio, que sentó las bases para el modelo actual de libro infantil. En este sentido, no solo se abordan las transformaciones, sino también las diferentes batallas que debieron librarse para combatir varias convenciones y estructuras obsoletas, en un Uruguay que comenzaba a dejar atrás la dictadura.

A new student generation, denominated generation Y emerged as a consequence of structural changes in a higher education globalization context as well as the social and technologic development. Some of the generation Y characteristics are: digital natives, the most diverse generation, at once more connected and more isolated, facing the worst economy in recent memory, more immature and dependent, with a pragmatic vision of studies and with useful searching information skills.This paper focused a comprehensive and structural vision of generation Y college students. This vision, multidimensional and multilevel, has been constructed with two types of evidence: the first one it’s about some secondary evidence sources (research studies, institutional reports), with special focus on strong methodological issues; the second one is founded on primary evidence from a group of junior faculty of University of Barcelona. The multidimensional vision included such aspects as: social and academic background, transition to higher education, modes and types of studies, and learning styles. The multilevel analysis focuses on students of several countries (especial attention on European students), national Spanish students, and student from some specifics universities. A singular objective of this paper is to have the possibility of contrasting the similitude of the double vision generated from the two typologies of examined evidence

Una nueva generación de estudiantes, la denominada generación Y ha emergido como consecuencia de los cambios estructurales en el contexto de globalización de la Educación Superior y del desarrollo social y tecnológico. Una generación caracterizada por ser nativos digitales, muy diversos social y culturalmente, conectados y a la vez solitarios, inmersos en una situación de crisis económica, más inmaduros y dependientes, pragmáticos en sus estudios y con una gran capacidad para obtener información. En este artículo se ofrece una visión comprensiva y estructurada de los estudiantes universitarios de esta generación. La visión, multidimensional y multinivel, se construye a partir de dos tipologías de evidencias: diferentes fuentes de evidencia secundaria (investigaciones o informes periódicos institucionales), con especial atención a la fortaleza metodológica de tales fuentes; la segunda procede de la evidencia primaria aportada por un grupo de profesorado novel de la U. de Barcelona. La multidimensionalidad de la visión toma en consideración los siguientes aspectos: background social y académico, transición a la educación superior, modos y conducta de estudio y estilos de aprendizaje. En el análisis multinivel se considera el ámbito internacional (con especial atención a los estudiantes europeos), el ámbito nacional (estudiantes españoles) y el ámbito institucional (universidades específicas). Un objetivo singular de este trabajo es el de ofrecer la posibilidad de contrastar la similitud o no de la doble visión que emerge de las dos tipologías de evidencias aportadas.

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a miniaturized Rat-race hybrid implemented in substrate CER-60 with microstrip transmission lines in a novel space-filling curve. This circuit is the main research's result of the project PS 3206funded by the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. The hybrid achieves a miniaturization of 73 %, it operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, with an optimum operating frequency 2.56 GHz and a fractional band width of17.15%.

Thermal anomalies have become more severe, frequent and well-documented across the Caribbean for the past 30 years. This increase in temperature has caused coral bleaching resulting in reef decline. At Los Roques National Park, Venezuela, temperature has been monitored at four reef sites. In mid-September 2010, seawater temperature reached 30.85°C at 5 m depth in Los Roques, an archipelago only slightly affected by previous bleaching events. For example, bleaching in Los Roques in 2005 was mild compared to the rest of the Caribbean and to the results in this study. In 2010, seawater temperatures remained above 29.0°C from mid-August until the first week of November, resulting in +16 Degree Heating Weeks by that time. Our annual survey of four reef sites indicated that 72% of 563 scleractinian colonies were partial or totally bleached (white) or pale (discolored) in October 2010. In February 2011, there were still 46% of coral colonies affected; but most of them were pale and only 2% were bleached. By February, coral cover had declined 4 to 30% per transect, with a mean of 14.3%. Thus, mean coral cover dropped significantly from 45 to 31% cover (a 34% reduction). In addition to bleaching, corals showed a high prevalence (up to 16%) of black band disease in October 2010 and of white plague (11%) in February 2011. As a consequence, coral mortality is expected to be larger than reported here. Reef surveys since 2002 and personal observations for more than 20 years indicated that this bleaching event and its consequences in Los Roques have no precedent. Our results suggest that reef sites with no previous record of significant deterioration are more likely to become affected by thermal anomalies. However, this archipelago is relatively unaffected by local anthropogenic disturbance and has a high coral recruitment, which may contribute to its recoveryDurante las últimas décadas las anomalías térmicas han sido más frecuentes y severas en el Caribe, quedando pocos arrecifes exentos de eventos masivos de blanqueamiento (EMB). En el Parque Nacional Los Roques, Venezuela, un archipiélago poco afectado previamente por EMB, la temperatura del agua a 5m de profundidad alcanzó 30,85°C en septiembre 2010, y fue >29,0°C entre mediados de agosto y la primera semana de noviembre en cuatro arrecifes. El 72% de 563 colonias de escleractinios estaban blanqueadas o pálidas para octubre de 2010, mientras que para febrero 2011, el 46% de las colonias aún estaban afectadas. Para febrero 2011, la cobertura béntica coralina promedio disminuyó de 45 a 31%. Además, los arrecifes mostraron una alta prevalencia (de hasta 16%) de enfermedad de banda negra en Octubre 2010, y de plaga blanca (11%) en Febrero 2011. Como consecuencia, es probable que la mortalidad coralina resulte mayor a la reportada acá. Sin embargo, Los Roques es poco afectado por perturbaciones antropogénicas y cuenta con un alto reclutamiento de corales, lo cual podría contribuir a su recuperación

This study describes the severity of the 2005 bleaching event at 15 reef sites across Venezuela and compares the 1998 and 2005 bleaching events at one of them. During August and September 2005, bleached corals were first observed on oceanic reefs rather than coastal reefs, affecting 1 to 4% of coral colonies in the community (3 reef sites, n=736 colonies). At that time, however, no bleached corals were recorded along the eastern coast of Venezuela, an area of seasonal upwelling (3 reefs, n=181 colonies). On coastal reefs, bleaching started in October but highest levels were reached in November 2005 and January 2006, when 16% of corals were affected among a wide range of taxa (e.g. scleractinians, octocorals, Millepora and zoanthids). In the Acropora habitats of Los Roques (an oceanic reef), no bleached was recorded in 2005 (four sites, n=643 colonies). At Cayo Sombrero, a coastal reef site, bleaching was less severe in 1998 than in 2005 (9% of the coral colonies involving 2 species vs. 26% involving 23 species, respectively). Our results indicate that bleaching was more severe in 2005 than in 1998 on Venezuelan reefs; however, no mass mortality was observed in either of these two events. Rev. Biol. Los primeros corales blanqueados se observaron en agosto y septiembre 2005, en arrecifes oceánicos en lugar de costeros, afectando entre 1 y 4% de las colonias coralinas (3 arrecifes, n= 736 colonias). Para ese momento, tampoco se había detectado blanqueamiento en áreas oceánicas de la costa este de Venezuela (3 arrecifes, n= 181 colonias), donde ocurre una surgencia estacional. En arrecifes costeros, el blanqueamiento comenzó en octubre pero alcanzó su máximo entre noviembre 2005 y enero 2006, afectando hasta el 16% de los organismos de una variedad de taxa (e.g. escleractinios, octocorales, Millepora, zoántidos). En los hábitats de Acropora de Los Roques, no se observó blanqueamiento en el 2005 (4 sitios oceánicos, n= 643 colonias). En Cayo Sombrero, un arrecife costero, el blanqueamiento fue menos severo en 1998 comparado con el de 2005 (9% de colonias coralinas de 2 especies vs. 26% de colonias de 23 especies, respectivamente).Estos resultados indican que el blanqueamiento del 2005 fue más severo que el de 1998 en los arrecifes de Venezuela, sin embargo, no ocurrió mortalidad masiva asociada a ninguno de los dos eventos.

In spite of their economic importance, coral reef communities of the world are rapidly decreasing, and an adequate management planification is needed. The benthic and fish communities of Dos Mosquises Sur and Madrizquí at Los Roques National Park, and Caiman and Cayo Norte at Morrocoy National Park, in Venezuela were monitored during 2003 and 2004. The CARICOMP method was used to describe the benthic community, and the AGRRA protocol was applied to the fish community assessment. The benthic cover of five broad living categories (i.e. corals, algae, sponge and octocorals) differed across the sites (Nested ANOVA, p < 0.05), but there were no statistical differences between parks. Despite being on different parks, the benthic cover in Dos Mosquises Sur and Cayo Norte was similar (76% based on Bray-Curtis), whereas Caiman differed greatly (57- 68%) from all other sites. The cover of hard coral, algae, sponges and octocorals was similar between 2003 and 2004 in all four sites. Similarly, the fish community structure of both parks did not change over time, and was dominated by herbivores (Pomacentridae, Scaridae and Acanthuridae). However, commercially important carnivores (e.g. Lutjanids and Serranids) were more abundant in Los Roques than in Morrocoy. Although it was expected that the benthic cover and fish community would reflect greater differences between Los Roques and Morrocoy, only the fish community appeared healthier in Los Roques, whereas Cayo Norte (Morrocoy), had a coral cover similar or higher than both sites of Los Roques. Thus, our results suggest that in Venezuela, oceanic reef sites are not necessarily ‘healthier’ (i.e. higher coral cover) than land-influenced coral communities. The addition of three new sites and the reincorporation of Caiman has improved and expanded the monitoring capabilities in Venezuela and it represents the first step towards the consolidation of a coral reef monitoring program for the country. Epub 2010 May 01.En este estudio se describe la condición de las comunidades bentónicas e ictícolas en cuatro arrecifes que fueron monitorizados durante 2003 y 2004 en Venezuela: Dos Mosquises Sur y Madrizquí en el Parque Nacional Archpiélago Los Roques y Caimán y Cayo Norte en el Parque Nacional Morrocoy. Para ello, empleamos los protocolos de CARICOMP y AGRRA para describir la comunidad bentónica e ictícola, respectivamente. La cobertura de los cinco principales grupos bentónicos difirió entre arrecifes (ANOVA anidado, p < 0.05) más no entre parques. A pesar de pertenecer a diferentes parques la estructura de la comunidad bentónica entre Dos Mosquises Sur y Cayo Norte mostró un índice de similitud (Bray-Curtis) de 76%, mientras que Caiman difirió entre 57 y 68% con respecto a todos los arrecifes. Como se esperaba, la cobertura coralina, algas esponjas y octocorales no cambió entre 2003 y 2004. De forma similar, la comunidad de peces tampoco cambió en el tiempo y estuvo dominada por especies de herbívoros (Pomacentridae, Scaridae and Labridae). Sin embargo, en Los Roques los carnívoros de importancia comercial (e.g. lutjanidos y serranidos) fueron más abundantes que en Morrocoy. Aunque se esperaba encontrar diferencias en la comunidad bentónica e ictícola de Los Roques y Morrocoy, solo la de peces reflejó las diferencias, encontrándose en mejor estado de salud en Los Roques, mientras que CNOR, localizado en Morrocoy, presentó una cobertura similar o ligeramente mayor que los arrecifes localizados en Los Roques. Por lo tanto, los resultados de este estudio muestran que los arrecifes oceánicos no necesariamente se encuentran en mejor estado que los costeros. La inclusión de 3 nuevos sitios y la reincorporación de Caimán ha expandido y mejorado las capacidades de monitoreo de Venezuela y representa el primer paso hacia la creación de un sistema de monitoreo de arrecifes en el país.

La ciudad de Rosario y su aglomerado urbano cuentan con una población aproximada de 1.100.000 habitantes, y se sitúa en la provincia de Santa Fe (Argentina). En esta ciudad la producción de la vivienda social se realiza básicamente desde los organismos públicos, registrándose también algunas experiencias gestionadas por cooperativas. En el contexto de crisis de la última década y por las condiciones de pobreza de los asentamientos irregulares surgen las iniciativas productivas (microemprendimientos) como una respuesta ante la falta de trabajo, contando con el apoyo de organismos municipales en Rosario. Este trabajo está centrado en proyectos de vivienda social vinculados a emprendimientos productivos, desarrollados por articulación de diversos actores sociales. Se toman como referencia distintas experiencias que vinculan el hábitat con iniciativas productivas para los sectores de bajos recursos: *Programa Agricultura urbana. *Programa Rosario Hábitat. *Cooperativas de viviendas. *Asistencia técnica de Colegios profesionales. La investigación se orienta a formular recomendaciones para la gestión participativa de la vivienda social y su articulación con emprendimientos productivos. Como parte de la investigación se prevé la organización de un Taller de capacitación, como instancia de formación para la gestión del hábitat promoviendo equipos multidisciplinarios para proyectos de vivienda social vinculados a iniciativas productivas.

Acute compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency and its diagnosis is more difficult in obtunded or insensate patients. We present the case of a 34-year-old woman who sustained a Gustilo-Anderson grade III open midshaft femur fracture with an isolated femoral vein injury treated with direct repair. She developed lower leg compartment syndrome at 48 hours postoperatively, necessitating fasciotomies. She was subsequently found to have a DVT in her femoral vein at the level of the repair and was started on therapeutic anticoagulation. This case highlights the importance of recognition of isolated venous injuries in a trauma setting as a risk factor for developing compartment syndrome.

Se presenta un modelo matematico para la prediccion de la conductividad termica de hidrocarburos liquidos, incluyendo compuestos que tienen oxigeno en su estructura. Se utilizo como fluido de referencia la familia de las normal parafinas a presion atmosferica y se agragaron dos factores de correccion para cuantificar el efecto de la geometria molecular y la ppolaridad. Se empleo el principio de estados correspondientes para generalizar el modelo y aplicarlo a presiones diferentes a la atmosferica. Se confronto el modelo contra mas de 600 datos experimentales y se obtuvo un error promedio al 5%

BACKGROUND: The rising temperature of the world's oceans has become a major threat to coral reefs globally as the severity and frequency of mass coral bleaching and mortality events increase. In 2005, high ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean resulted in the most severe bleaching event ever recorded in the basin. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Satellite-based tools provided warnings for coral reef managers and scientists, guiding both the timing and location of researchers' field observations as anomalously warm conditions developed and spread across the greater Caribbean region from June to October 2005. Field surveys of bleaching and mortality exceeded prior efforts in detail and extent, and provided a new standard for documenting the effects of bleaching and for testing nowcast and forecast products. Collaborators from 22 countries undertook the most comprehensive documentation of basin-scale bleaching to date and found that over 80% of corals bleached and over 40% died at many sites. The most severe bleaching coincided with waters nearest a western Atlantic warm pool that was centered off the northern end of the Lesser Antilles. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Thermal stress during the 2005 event exceeded any observed from the Caribbean in the prior 20 years, and regionally-averaged temperatures were the warmest in over 150 years. Comparison of satellite data against field surveys demonstrated a significant predictive relationship between accumulated heat stress (measured using NOAA Coral Reef Watch's Degree Heating Weeks) and bleaching intensity. This severe, widespread bleaching and mortality will undoubtedly have long-term consequences for reef ecosystems and suggests a troubled future for tropical marine ecosystems under a warming climate.

Infections caused by mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), are a major public health issue worldwide. An accurate diagnosis of mycobacterial species is a challenge for surveillance and treatment, particularly in high-burden settings usually associated with low- and middle-income countries. In this study, we analyzed the clinical performance of two commercial PCR kits designed for the identification and differentiation of MTBC and NTM, available in a high-burden setting such as Ecuador. A total of 109 mycobacteria isolates were included in the study, 59 of which were previously characterized as M. tuberculosis and the other 59 as NTM. Both kits displayed great clinical performance for the identification of M. tuberculosis, with 100% sensitivity. On the other hand, for NTM, one of the kits displayed a good clinical performance with a sensitivity of 94.9% (CI 95%: 89–100%), while the second kit had a reduced sensitivity of 77.1% (CI 95%: 65–89%). In conclusion, one of the kits is a fast and reliable tool for the identification and discrimination of MTBC and NTM from clinical isolates.
