51. Atomic force microscopy and spectroscopic studies of crosslinking induced changes in the extracellular matrix that influence nanomechanical properties

Includes bibliographical references (pages 119-122) The tissue microenvironment has received significant attention in recent decades since the revelation that it contains biophysical and biochemical cues that influence critical cellular behaviour such as proliferation,differentiation, migrations and survival. In this thesis, atomic force microscopy is used on a simple type I collagen model. The data shows that current assumptions in the literature attributing the bimodal distribution of modulus values found in tissue to proteoglycan and collagen may not be valid. The data suggests that the bimodal values are both related to collagen. The effect of glutaraldehyde cross-linking on the nanomechanical profile was examined, revealing a significant distortion. Infrared spectroscopy was used to further investigate the changes of the chemical environment due to cross-linking.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 127-139) In this thesis, problems from three areas of general relativity are investigated: - Exact solutions of the Einstein field equations of gravitation.- Dynamics of spacecraft and celestial bodies in the first post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity. - Relativistic orbit determination of spacecraft and interplanetary probes including non-gravitational perturbations. The first part of this thesis examines standard methods adopted when deriving exact, analytical spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein filed equations. The second part of this thesis is concerned with the well-known post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity. We consider two separate problems, namely, the relativistic two-body and two-centre Euler problems respectively. The final part of this thesis suggests a framework for general relativistic orbit determination which includes non-gravitational perturbations.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 117-131) The percentage of world elderly population is increasing, and it is estimated by 2050 more than 20% of the population will be over 65 years and older. The falls are a commonly identified risk of elders worldwide, resulting in mortalities, fatal or non-fatal injuries. This thesis is an exploratory research for enabling the robots to assist autonomously in fall recovery from a robotic vision perspective by providing a framework, dataset, and algorithms to plan observations, recognise fall recovery sub-activities and guide the person to get up safely. It is promising that with the advancements in the robotics research front, next-generation home care robots would be capable of assisting in elder falls autonomously.

Abstract: Electric vehicles (EVs) are likely to become very popular within the next few years. With possibly millions of such vehicles operating across the smart cities, smart grid energy providers can be directly impacted by the charging of EV batteries. In order to reduce this impact and optimize energy saving, in this article, we propose a coordinated model for scheduling the plug-in of EVs for charging and discharging energy. The model is based on a new decentralized Fog architecture for smart grid in order to reduce the completion and communication delay of EV energy demand scheduling. To enhance the scheduling of EV demands and predict the future energy flows, we propose a plug-in system of EVs based on calendar planning. We develop a mathematical formalism based on Markov chains using a multipriority queuing theory with cut-off discipline in order to reduce the waiting time to plug-in. We implement three planning algorithms in order to assign priority levels and then optimize the plug-in time into each EV public supply station. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article that proposes a model that tries to save energy by planning the plug-in of EVs using a cut-off priority queuing model and a decentralized Fog architecture. We evaluate the performances of our solution via extensive simulations using a realistic energy loads from the city of Toronto, and we compare it with other recent works.

The data collected during enrolment and after commencement into a course provides an important source of information to assist with identifying potential risk indicators associated with poor academic performance and attrition. Both predictive and descriptive data mining techniques have been applied to educational data to discover the significant reasons of student performance. Predictive techniques generate models of student academic performance while the descriptive techniques search for interesting student progressive indicators.In this thesis, we have studied data mining approaches for identifying the influencing factors of student academic outcomes.

Abstract: We conducted preregistered replications of 28 classic and contemporary published findings, with protocols that were peer reviewed in advance, to examine variation in effect magnitudes across samples and settings. Each protocol was administered to approximately half of 125 samples that comprised 15,305 participants from 36 countries and territories. Using the conventional criterion of statistical significance (p < .05), we found that 15 (54%) of the replications provided evidence of a statistically significant effect in the same direction as the original finding. With a strict significance criterion (p < .0001), 14 (50%) of the replications still provided such evidence, a reflection of the extremely highpowered design. Seven (25%) of the replications yielded effect sizes larger than the original ones, and 21 (75%) yielded effect sizes smaller than the original ones. The median comparable Cohen’s ds were 0.60 for the original findings and 0.15 for the replications. The effect sizes were small (< 0.20) in 16 of the replications (57%), and 9 effects (32%) were in the direction opposite the direction of the original effect. Across settings, the Q statistic indicated significant heterogeneity in 11 (39%) of the replication effects, and most of those were among the findings with the largest overall effect sizes; only 1 effect that was near zero in the aggregate showed significant heterogeneity according to this measure. Only 1 effect had a tau value greater than .20, an indication of moderate heterogeneity. Eight others had tau values near or slightly above .10, an indication of slight heterogeneity. Moderation tests indicated that very little heterogeneity was attributable to the order in which the tasks were performed or whether the tasks were administered in lab versus online. Exploratory comparisons revealed little heterogeneity between Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) cultures and less WEIRD cultures (i.e., cultures with relatively high and low WEIRDness scores, respectively). Cumulatively, variability in the observed effect sizes was attributable more to the effect being studied than to the sample or setting in which it was studied. Abstract: International audience; We have provided critical evaluations of new potential testbeds for the evaluation of SDN-based WMNs. We evaluated the R2Lab wireless testbed platform at INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, France. This testbed has 37 customisable wireless devices in an anechoic chamber for reproducible research in wireless WiFi and 4G/5G networks. Our work presents the first initial evaluation of the testbed for wireless multi-hop experiments , using traditional WMN routing protocols. Our results demonstrate the potential for SDN experiments. We believe this is an important contribution in its own right, since experimental validation is a key research methodology in this context, and trust in the validity of experimental results is absolutely critical.

Abstract: In order to optimally schedule electric vehicles (EVs) energy charging and discharging demands, we propose in this paper a multi-level fog (MLF) model architecture. EVs energy demands in MLF are planned as charging and discharging calendars to handle with EVs energy demands in smart grid environment. Our work integrates a priority queuing model based on markov chain analysis to schedule EVs energy calendars and allocate computing resources. Furthermore, we use the distributed feature of fog networks to cover micro grids. To this end, and to ensure the efficiency of resources allocation, we further propose two workload placement mechanisms for smart grid environment. Extensive simulations are performed under accurate assumptions and realistic environment based on real energy loads in the city of Toronto. The obtained results indicate the efficiency of the proposed MLF model in enhancing smart grid performance and saving EVs energy.

Abstract: Industry 4.0 or industrial Internet of things (IIoT) has become one of the most talked-about industrial business concepts in recent years. Thus, to efficiently integrate Internet of things technology into industry, the collected and sensed data from IIoT need to be scheduled in real-time constraints, especially for big factories. To this end, we propose in this paper a hierarchical fog servers’ deployment at the network service layer across different tiers. Using probabilistic analysis models, we prove the efficiency of the proposed hierarchical fog computing compared with the flat architecture. In this paper, IIoT data and requests are divided into both high priority and low priority requests; the high priority requests are urgent/emergency demands that need to be scheduled rapidly. Therefore, we use two-priority queuing model in order to schedule and analyze IIoT data. Finally, we further introduce a workload assignment algorithm to offload peak loads over higher tiers of the fog hierarchy. Using realistic industrial data from Bosch group, the benefits of the proposed architecture compared to the conventional flat design are proved using various performance metrics and through extensive simulations.

Abstract: The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2017 (IDP2017) is the second publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2016. The IDP2017 includes data from the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Southern and Indian oceans, with about twice the data volume of the previous IDP2014. For the first time, the IDP2017 contains data for a large suite of biogeochemical parameters as well as aerosol and rain data characterising atmospheric trace element and isotope (TEI) sources. The TEI data in the IDP2017 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data comparisons at crossover stations. The IDP2017 consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 450 TEIs as well as standard hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing an on-line atlas that includes more than 590 section plots and 130 animated 3D scenes. The digital data are provided in several formats, including ASCII, Excel spreadsheet, netCDF, and Ocean Data View collection. Users can download the full data packages or make their own custom selections with a new on-line data extraction service. In addition to the actual data values, the IDP2017 also contains data quality flags and 1-σ data error values where available. Quality flags and error values are useful for data filtering and for statistical analysis. Metadata about data originators, analytical methods and original publications related to the data are linked in an easily accessible way. The eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas is the visual representation of the IDP2017 as section plots and rotating 3D scenes. The basin-wide 3D scenes combine data from many cruises and provide quick overviews of large-scale tracer distributions. These 3D scenes provide geographical and bathymetric context that is crucial for the interpretation and assessment of tracer plumes near ocean margins or along ridges. The IDP2017 is the result of a truly international effort involving 326 researchers from 25 countries. This publication provides the critical reference for unpublished data, as well as for studies that make use of a large cross-section of data from the IDP2017. Abstract: International audience; Very few characteristic functions, or equations, are reported so far for fractals. Such functions, called Rvachev functions in function-based modeling, are zero on the boundary, negative for inside points and positive for outside points. This paper proposes Rvachev functions for some classical fractals. These functions are convergent series, which are bounded with interval arithmetic and interval analysis in finite time. This permits to extend the Recursive Space Subdivision (RSS) method, which is classical in Computer Graphics (CG) and Interval Analysis, to fractal geometric sets. The newly proposed fractal functions can also be composed with classical Rvachev functions today routinely used in Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) trees of CG or function-based modeling.

Abstract: Heart rate variability (HRV) has been analyzed using linear and nonlinear methods. In the framework of a controlled neonatal stress model, we applied Tone-Entropy (T-E) analysis at multiple lags to understand the influence of external stressors on healthy term neonates. Forty term neonates were included in the study. HRV was analyzed using multi-lag T-E at two resting and two stress phases (heel stimulation and a heel stick blood drawing phase). Higher mean entropy values and lower mean tone values when stressed showed a reduction in randomness with increased sympathetic and reduced parasympathetic activity. A ROC analysis was utilized to estimate the diagnostic performances of tone and entropy and combining both features. Comparing the resting and simulation phase separately, the performance of tone outperformed entropy, but combining the two in a quadratic linear regression model, resting from stress phases in neonates could be distinguished with high accuracy. This raises the possibility that when applied across short time segments, multi-lag T-E becomes an additional tool for more objective assessment of neonatal stress.

Abstract: Background: Change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure could be due to both shifts in the entire distribution of blood pressure (representing the combined effects of public health interventions and secular trends) and changes in its high-blood-pressure tail (representing successful clinical interventions to control blood pressure in the hypertensive population). Our aim was to quantify the contributions of these two phenomena to the worldwide trends in the prevalence of raised blood pressure. Methods: We pooled 1018 population-based studies with blood pressure measurements on 88.6 million participants from 1985 to 2016. We first calculated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and prevalence of raised blood pressure by sex and 10-year age group from 20-29 years to 70-79 years in each study, taking into account complex survey design and survey sample weights, where relevant. We used a linear mixed effect model to quantify the association between (probit-transformed) prevalence of raised blood pressure and age-group-and sex-specific mean blood pressure. We calculated the contributions of change in mean SBP and DBP, and of change in the prevalence-mean association, to the change in prevalence of raised blood pressure. Results: In 2005-16, at the same level of population mean SBP and DBP, men and women in South Asia and in Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa would have the highest prevalence of raised blood pressure, and men and women in the high-income Asia Pacific and high-income Western regions would have the lowest. In most region-sex-age groups where the prevalence of raised blood pressure declined, one half or more of the decline was due to the decline in mean blood pressure. Where prevalence of raised blood pressure has increased, the change was entirely driven by increasing mean blood pressure, offset partly by the change in the prevalence-mean association. Conclusions: Change in mean blood pressure is the main driver of the worldwide change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure, but change in the high-blood-pressure tail of the distribution has also contributed to the change in prevalence, especially in older age groups., This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust [101506/Z/13/Z].

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a decentralized scheduling architecture for Electric Vehicles (EVs) energy management based on fog computing paradigm, where optimal load balancing algorithms are implemented using priority-queuing model. The proposed architecture consists of multiple decentralized fog operation centers that assist vehicle-to-grid (V2G) communication in order to manage and schedule EVs charging/discharging requests in real-time way and to maintain the electric smart grid stability. We introduce two scheduling algorithms; 1) priority levels assignment, 2) optimal load balancing of EVs requests over fog servers. The extensive simulations and comparisons with different scenarios proved that our proposed model reduces the response time and maximizes EVs utility. In addition, the proposed scheduling algorithms optimize the energy load during peak hours, and maintain the micro grid stability using real scenarios in the city of Toronto.

Abstract: Smart grids (SG) energy management system and electric vehicle (EV) have gained considerable reputation in recent years. This has been enabled by the high growth of EVs on roads; however, this may lead to a significant impact on the power grids. In order to keep EVs far from causing peaks in power demand and to manage building energy during the day, it is important to perform an intelligent scheduling for EVs charging and discharging service and buildings areas by including different metrics, such as real-time price and demand–supply curve. In this paper, we propose a real-time dynamic pricing model for EVs charging and discharging service and building energy management, in order to reduce the peak loads. Our proposed approach uses a decentralized cloud computing architecture based on software define networking (SDN) technology and network function virtualization (NFV). We aim to schedule user's requests in a real-time way and to supervise communications between microgrids controllers, SG and user entities (i.e., EVs, electric vehicles public supply stations, advance metering infrastructure, smart meters, etc.). We formulate the problem as a linear optimization problem for EV and a global optimization problem for all microgrids. We solve the problems by using different decentralized decision algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that proposes a pricing model based on decentralized Cloud-SDN architecture in order to solve all the aforementioned issues. The extensive simulations and comparisons with related works proved that our proposed pricing model optimizes the energy load during peak hours, maximizes EVs utility, and maintains the microgrid stability. The simulation is based on real electric load of the city of Toronto.

Abstract: In highly dynamic systems (such as wireless mobile ad hoc networks, robotic swarms, vehicular networks, etc.) connectivity does not necessarily hold at a given time but temporal paths, or journeys, may still exist over time and space, rendering computing possible; some of these systems allow waiting (i.e., pauses at intermediate nodes, also referred to as store-carry-forward strategies) while others do not. These systems are naturally modeled as time-varying graphs, where the presence of an edge and its latency vary as a function of time; in these graphs, the distinction between waiting and not waiting corresponds to the one between indirect and direct journeys.We consider the expressivity of time-varying graphs, in terms of the languages generated by the feasible journeys. We examine the impact of waiting by studying the difference in the type of language expressed by indirect journeys (i.e., waiting is allowed) and by direct journeys (i.e., waiting is unfeasible), under various assumptions on the functions that control the presence and latency of edges. We prove a general result which implies that, if waiting is not allowed, then the set of languages Lnowait that can be generated contains all computable languages when the presence and latency functions are computable. On the other end, we prove that, if waiting is allowed, then the set of languages Lwait contains all and only regular languages; this result, established using algebraic properties of quasi-orders, holds even if the presence and latency are unrestricted (e.g., possibly non-computable) functions of time.In other words, we prove that, when waiting is allowed, the power of the accepting automaton can drop drastically from being at least as powerful as a Turing machine, to becoming that of a Finite-State Machine. This large gap provides an insight on the impact of waiting in time-varying graphs.We also study bounded waiting, in which waiting is allowed at a node for at most d time units, and prove that Lwait[d]=Lnowait; that is, the power of the accepting automaton decreases only if waiting time is unbounded.

Abstract: Highly dynamic networks rarely offer end-to-end connectivity at a given time. Yet, connectivity in these networks can be established over time and space, based on temporal analogues of multi-hop paths (also called journeys). Attempting to optimize the selection of the journeys in these networks naturally leads to the study of three cases: shortest (minimum hop), fastest (minimum duration), and foremost (earliest arrival) journeys. Efficient centralized algorithms exists to compute all cases, when the full knowledge of the network evolution is given. In this paper, we study the distributed counterparts of these problems, i.e. shortest, fastest, and foremost broadcast with termination detection (TDB), with minimal knowledge on the topology. We show that the feasibility of each of these problems requires distinct features on the evolution, through identifying three classes of dynamic graphs wherein the problems become gradually feasible: graphs in which the re-appearance of edges is recurrent (class [Formula: see text]), bounded-recurrent ([Formula: see text]), or periodic ([Formula: see text]), together with specific knowledge that are respectively n (the number of nodes), Δ (a bound on the recurrence time), and p (the period). In these classes it is not required that all pairs of nodes get in contact — only that the overall footprint of the graph is connected over time. Our results, together with the strict inclusion between [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text], implies a feasibility order among the three variants of the problem, i.e. TDB[foremost] requires weaker assumptions on the topology dynamics than TDB[shortest], which itself requires less than TDB[fastest]. Reversely, these differences in feasibility imply that the computational powers of [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] also form a strict hierarchy.

Therefore, timely detection of ADEs could reduce harm and improve people’s health outcomes. Nonetheless, it is not possible to identify all ADEs in clinical trials due to limited population sizes. Likewise, spontaneous reporting systems (SRSs) in pharmaco vigilance suffer from significant underreporting and reporting bias. As a result, in this thesis, we investigated the signal detection of ADEs from complementary data sources including medication dispensing data and social media. Our ultimate goal is to generate high-quality hypotheses of ADEs to reduce experts’workload. In particular, we developed three computational methods to improve the accuracy of existing adverse drug reaction (ADR) signal detection methods and explore other types of ADEs that have not been studied such as detrimental prescribing cascades (DPCs).

A new paradigm called Model Driven Engineering has emerged to switch from the object-oriented code to higher-level models. Higher-level definitions of concepts and behaviour are organised in a two-level meta-modelling environment, where models and meta-models aim to automate code generation and reduce costs, errors and time-to-market while improving software quality and usability. However, models with more than two levels of abstraction face modelling and implementation complexity in trying to fit an arbitrary number of abstraction levels into the traditional two levels. This thesis investigates a new multi-level modelling approach that decouples modelling and implementation by addressing implementation at meta-model level. It provides an integrated framework that encapsulates implementation, transformation and verification aspects. The aim is to support the user in the process of building models with more than two levels of abstraction in a modelling environment.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 211-230) In the past two decades, business process management (BPM) research has focused on process flexibility to facilitate the operation of business processes in an open and dynamic environment. This is important to ensure that processes accurately reflect and handle changes occurring in the real world. While existing works have investigated changes in business processes in general, two important types of changes have received limited attention. The first type of change results from the revision of previously published events; and the second, is the unplanned modification of temporal constraints - such as changes to deadlines at runtime - with disruptive impacts on process execution. These changes have not been sufficiently addressed in BPM research works mainly for the following reasons. First, events are considered to be immutable; and second, modifications of temporal constraints are thought to be known during design time, and hence, possible changes are incorporated into the business process design. However, high-level business events have been shown to be susceptible to changes in web and database domains. And, temporal constraint parameters are also known to be easily affected by unplanned modifications in real-world applications. Since these types of changes are not considered in existing BPM research, there are no existing techniques - to the best of our knowledge - designed to handle contingencies resulting from these changes. In this thesis, we address both types of changes in business processes to enhance the support of dynamic changes during runtime.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 128-145) In this thesis, we propose three research contributions to solve the problems in incorporating prior knowledge, handling censored observations, and choosing a more appropriate objective function in terms of better model interpretability and more effective sample utilization. First, we propose a novel constraint-based method which utilizes both prior knowledge and observational data to learn more reliable and accurate causal structures. The method is particularly useful for learning the regulatory network of human genes since it can utilize various sources of existing gene regulatory knowledge databases in combination with gene expression profiles. Then, we propose a recursive partitioning based heterogeneous causal effect estimation method to handle both censored and uncensored observations. At last, we propose a novel multi-objective splitting criterion for recursive partitioning which is more suitable for the task of estimating heterogeneous causal effects. The latter two contributions provide powerful tools for identifying cancer subtypes and tailoring personalized medical treatment because of the improvement in splitting criterion and the ability to utilized censored observations.

This dissertation extends the scope of existing knowledge in this space by looking at methodologies by which the effectiveness of augmented reality for procedural task instruction can be measured. One of the key theories investigated in this dissertation is cognitive load theory. Abstract: International audience; Fiducial markers are images or landmarks placed in real environment, typically used for pose estimation and camera tracking. Reliable fiducials are strongly desired for many augmented reality (AR) applications, but currently there is no systematic method to design highly reliable fiducials. In this paper, we present fiducial marker optimizer (FMO), a tool to optimize the design attributes of ARToolKit markers, including black to white (B:W) ratio, edge sharpness, and information complexity, and to reduce inter-marker confusion. For these operations, the FMO provides a user friendly interface at the front-end and specialized image processing algorithms at the back-end. We tested manually designed markers and FMO optimized markers in ARToolKit and found that the latter were more robust. The FMO will be used for designing highly reliable fiducials in easy to use fashion. It will improve the application's performance, where it is used.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 141-151) Brain structures governing olfactory sensation provide a unique window for study of cortical information processing. The largest and most well studied cortical area of the olfactory system is the piriform cortex. The piriform cortex in particular is attractive for study as it is considered a simple structure in comparison with other primary sensory cortices. Additionally, the physical location of the piriform cortex on the outer surface of the brain allows accessibility for electrophysiological techniques. As a result, research on the piriform cortex has a long history that has produced many experimental,theoretical and computational investigations. However, recent electrophysiological studies have provided new insights into the cellular properties and connectivity within piriform cortex, that together constitute a microcircuit not previously studied using computational models of the olfactory system. It was the aim of this thesis to construct a biophysically detailed model that incorporates this new data and investigates its role in dynamics and function of piriform cortex. The model of this thesis is the first to include two classes of principal neuron, the semi-lunar (SL) and superficial pyramidal (SP) cells of the piriform cortex. Additionally, effects of short term plasticity shown to be present in cortex are included that are unique to this model. Throughout this thesis the role of the SL cells and other unique model inclusions are analysed for their influence on both function and dynamics of the piriform cortex model. This was achieved by analysis of dynamic behaviour and functional performance of model variants.

Abstract: International audience; We address the challenge of correctly estimating the position of wireless sensor network (WSN) nodes in the presence of malicious adversaries. We consider adversarial situations during the execution of node localization under three classes of colluding adversaries. We describe a decentralized algorithm that aims at determining the position of nodes in the presence of such colluders. Colluders are assumed to either forge or manipulate the information they exchange with the other nodes of the WSN. This algorithm allows location-unknown nodes to successfully detect adversaries within their communication range. Numeric simulation is reported to validate the approach. Results show the validity of the proposal, both in terms of localization and adversary detection

Abstract: Electric Vehicle (EV) and smart grids have gained much popularity in recent years. This has been enabled by the high increase of EVs on roads; however, this may lead to a significant impact on the power grids. In order to keep EVs far from causing peaks in power demand during the day, it is important to perform an intelligent scheduling for EVs charging and discharging by including metrics, such as price and demand-supply curve. In this paper, we propose a dynamic pricing model for EV charging (i.e., grid-to-vehicle, G2V) and discharging (i.e., vehicle-to-grid, V2G) services, in order to reduce the peak load. Our proposed model uses cloud computing architecture to schedule EV requests. We formulate our problem as a linear optimization problem and solve it using new algorithms for charging and discharging. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that proposes a model that tries to solve all the aforementioned issues. The extensive simulations proved that our proposed pricing model, based on cloud computing and EVs interactions, optimizes the energy load during peak hours and satisfies EVs users and micro grid constraints.

The objective of this thesis was to find measurement methods to answer this question. Australian economic activities are the main source of waste generation and understanding waste flows is the core of waste management. This can assist in the analysis of the origins of waste generation, waste generation characteristics, and waste treatment capacities. There is a major stumbling block in the economic waste debate. Previously, it has been strongly suggested that the successful development of the economy normally depends on the production and use of more resources whilst the minimisation of waste must make and use less. Therefore, Australia must have a comprehensive and accurate quantification of waste flows and better analysis of relationships between the economy and waste management to illustrate how to overcome this blockage. This will allow greater understanding of the current and future economic conditions and ultimately allow the formulation of effective waste management strategies.

While there have been numerous examples of co-located and remote synchronous collaborative AR applications, there has not been the same interest in pursuing asynchronous interfaces. The variance between synchronous and asynchronous processes is the consequence of time on the collaboration.While simultaneous and repetitive communication between stakeholders is a key element in synchronous collaboration, asynchronous collaboration requires the creation and retention of information, before the captured content is later consumed by stakeholders.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 197-213) Mobile devices and apps can be compromised by cyber criminals in order to target the users and their data, for example by exploiting design flaws and vulnerabilities in such devices and (poorly designed) apps. Examples of attack vectors include malware, unauthorised access, (distributed) denial of service, man-in-the-middle (MiTM) attacks, app reverse engineering, and exploitation of a trusted relationship between a mobile device and another device, such as a personal computer. This thesis focuses on Apple’s iOS platform, since iOS is one of two most widely used platforms but is relatively less studied than Google’s Android platform. In addition, it is generally accepted that iOS is more ‘secure’, in the sense of having hardened encryption and data protection mechanisms, and a stringent vetting process for apps for dissemination in the official App Store. By contrast, Android offers much more flexibility and the potential for customisation.

AOA localization finds many applications in both military and civilian areas such as radar/sonar tracking, sensor networks, and mobile positioning in wireless communication systems. Numerous solutions have been proposed for AOA target localization and tracking in both 2-dimensional (2D) plane and 3-dimensional (3D) space.The nonlinear relationship between the noisy angle measurements and unknown target state presents unique challenges for the development of accurate and low-complexity estimation algorithms. This thesis focuses on improving the performance of AOA target localization and tracking in the 3D space by (i) sensor-target geometry optimization, (ii) distributed pseudolinear Kalman filtering, and (iii) mobile sensor trajectory optimization.

Following innovative mapping schemes and decoding algorithms, the original data can be retrieved at the receivers from the signal superimposition broadcast by the relay.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 490-495) In this thesis we present an approach to automate the process of generating low-level device configurations for existing network deployments,from a high-level specification. We present a specification abstraction to capture high-level policy in a format which is compatible with current industry practice, and an approach to transform this to an intermediate network-wide configuration state representation. A second transformation step converts the intermediate representation into the low-level device configuration state appropriate for the target device, which is then assembled using simple templates. We show how this multi-stage compiler approach allows the expression of new high-level policies on different network topologies, variation of network designs and routing protocols, and generation of configurations for different target devices.

While most existing solutions for the privacy preserving publication problem are geared towards structured relational data,very few focus on unstructured data, particularly transactional data. This work explores the existing privacy preserving mechanisms for publishing transactional data, and develops useful and effective new publishing techniques.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 107-117) There are many situations where authorship attribution is crucial (i.e. determine if the same person has written distinct texts). Such situations include intrusion detection and user re-authentication, plagiarism detection, and the detection of online manipulation activity such as astroturfing. The challenges with identifying astroturfing are as follows: except authors’ text, other valuable information is limited; the language used is often informal; the texts are often short; and the contents can span multiple topics. All of these challenges make it more difficult for traditional authorship attribution methods. To address these problems, this thesis proposes a new method for authorship attribution based on binary n-gram analysis combined with other statistical techniques. N-gram analysis has been widely used for many years in different domains. An n-gram is a contiguous sequence of n items from a given sequence of text or speech. The items are usually bytes, or characters or words. In this work, the sequence is represented by strings of “0” and “1” (bits), and is called a binary n-gram method.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 137-152) The known optimal transforms of random vectors have been successfully applied to the solution of a number of real-life problems in engineering, signal processing, statistics,bioinformatics and many other research fields. In this thesis, we consider new approaches to constructing computationally efficient transforms that allow us to improve the performance of known methods. The thesis marks the coming together of two basic research streams. One stream consists of work on compression, filtering and reconstruction of random vectors. The term “compression" refers to dimensionality reduction of a random vector. This approach is based on the use of reduced-rank matrices and associated methods in numerical algebra. In Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7, we develop four new reduced-rank transforms, namely, the generalized Brillinger transform (GBT1), the double reduced-rank transform (DRRT), the generalized Brillinger transform of the second order (GBT2) and the GBT2 with multiple consecutive filtering.
