Abstract

This article presents the potential of a combined analysis of the JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA experiments to determine the neutrino mass ordering. This combination is particularly interesting as it significantly boosts the potential of either detector, beyond simply adding their neutrino mass ordering sensitivities, by removing a degeneracy in the determination of $\Delta m_{31}^2$ between the two experiments when assuming the wrong ordering. The study is based on the latest projected performances for JUNO, and on simulation tools using a full Monte Carlo approach to the KM3NeT/ORCA response with a careful assessment of its energy systematics. From this analysis, a $5\sigma$ determination of the neutrino mass ordering is expected after 6 years of joint data taking for any value of the oscillation parameters. This sensitivity would be achieved after only 2 years of joint data taking assuming the current global best-fit values for those parameters for normal ordering., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures

58. New submonolayer copper telluride phase on Cu(111) -- ad-chain and trough formation

Abstract

We present a so far undetected submonolayer phase of copper telluride on Cu(111) with $\left(5 \times \sqrt{3}\right)_{\text{rect}}$ periodicity and coverage of 0.40 ML Tellurium (Te), which can be grown with perfect long-range order. It is structurally characterized by a combination of quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED-IV), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and density functional theory (DFT). We find that Te induces the formation of four atom wide linear troughs within the Cu(111) surface filled up by two Te atoms per unit cell. Additionally, the interspace between the troughs is decorated by Cu$_2$Te$_2$ ad-chains sitting at hcp sites. All Te atoms exhibit the same local sixfold coordination: They occupy threefold hollow sites of the substrate and are one-sided attached to another three Cu atoms. The presented structural model is verified by a LEED-IV analysis with Pendry R-factor of R = 0.174 and quantitative agreement of structural parameters with DFT predictions. It also has by far the lowest energy of all models tested by DFT and simulated STM images agree perfectly with experiment. It turns out that the new $\left(5 \times \sqrt{3}\right)_{\text{rect}}$ phase is the most dense surface telluride phase possible on Cu(111) before bulk-like copper telluride starts to growth.

Abstract

The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory and the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) are two leading instruments in the ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray domain. HAWC employs the water Cherenkov detection (WCD) technique, while H.E.S.S. is an array of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The two facilities therefore differ in multiple aspects, including their observation strategy, the size of their field of view and their angular resolution, leading to different analysis approaches. Until now, it has been unclear if the results of observations by both types of instruments are consistent: several of the recently discovered HAWC sources have been followed up by IACTs, resulting in a confirmed detection only in a minority of cases. With this paper, we go further and try to resolve the tensions between previous results by performing a new analysis of the H.E.S.S. Galactic plane survey data, applying an analysis technique comparable between H.E.S.S. and HAWC. Events above 1 TeV are selected for both datasets, the point spread function of H.E.S.S. is broadened to approach that of HAWC, and a similar background estimation method is used. This is the first detailed comparison of the Galactic plane observed by both instruments. H.E.S.S. can confirm the gamma-ray emission of four HAWC sources among seven previously undetected by IACTs, while the three others have measured fluxes below the sensitivity of the H.E.S.S. dataset. Remaining differences in the overall gamma-ray flux can be explained by the systematic uncertainties. Therefore, we confirm a consistent view of the gamma-ray sky between WCD and IACT techniques.

Abstract

KM3NeT/ORCA is a next-generation neutrino telescope optimised for atmospheric neutrino oscillations studies. In this paper, the sensitivity of ORCA to the presence of a light sterile neutrino in a 3+1 model is presented. After three years of data taking, ORCA will be able to probe the active-sterile mixing angles $\theta_{14}$, $\theta_{24}$, $\theta_{34}$ and the effective angle $\theta_{\mu e}$, over a broad range of mass squared difference $\Delta m^2_{41} \sim [10^{-5}, 10]$ $\rm{eV}^2$, allowing to test the eV-mass sterile neutrino hypothesis as the origin of short baseline anomalies, as well as probing the hypothesis of a very light sterile neutrino, not yet constrained by cosmology. ORCA will be able to explore a relevant fraction of the parameter space not yet reached by present measurements.

Abstract

The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory surveys the very high energy sky in the 300 GeV to $>100$ TeV energy range. HAWC has detected two blazars above $11\sigma$, Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) and Markarian 501 (Mrk 501). The observations are comprised of data taken in the period between June 2015 and July 2018, resulting in a $\sim 1038$ days of exposure. In this work we report the time-averaged spectral analysis for both sources above 0.5 TeV. Taking into account the flux attenuation due to the extragalactic background light (EBL), the intrinsic spectrum of Mrk 421 is described by a power law with an exponential energy cut-off with index $\alpha=2.26\pm(0.12)_{stat}(_{-0.2}^{+0.17})_{sys}$ and energy cut-off $E_c=5.1\pm(1.6)_{stat}(_{-2.5}^{+1.4})_{sys}$ TeV, while the intrinsic spectrum of Mrk 501 is better described by a simple power law with index $\alpha=2.61\pm(0.11)_{stat}(_{-0.07}^{+0.01})_{sys}$. The maximum energies at which the Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 signals are detected are 9 and 12 TeV, respectively. This makes these some of the highest energy detections to date for spectra averaged over years-long timescales. Since the observation of gamma radiation from blazars provides information about the physical processes that take place in their relativistic jets, it is important to study the broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED) of these objects. To this purpose, contemporaneous data in the gamma-ray band to X-ray range, and literature data in the radio to UV range, were used to build time-averaged SEDs that were modeled within a synchrotron self-Compton leptonic scenario., Comment: 16 pages, 5 tables, 9 figures

Abstract

The invention of self-shielding copper substrate neutron guides is described, along with the rationale behind the development, and the realisation of commercial supply. The relative advantages with respect to existing technologies are quantified. These include ease of manufacture, long lifetime, increased thermal conductivity, and enhanced fast neutron attenuation in the keV-MeV energy range. Whilst the activation of copper is initially higher than for other material options, for the full energy spectrum, many of the isotopes are short-lived, so that for realistic maintenance access times the radiation dose to workers is expected to be lower than steel and in the lowest zoning category for radiation safety outside the spallation target monolith. There is no impact on neutron reflectivity performance relative to established alternatives, and the manufacturing cost is similar to other polished metal substrates.

Abstract

The next generation of water Cherenkov neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea are under construction offshore France (KM3NeT/ORCA) and Sicily (KM3NeT/ARCA). The KM3NeT/ORCA detector features an energy detection threshold which allows to collect atmospheric neutrinos to study flavour oscillation. This paper reports the KM3NeT/ORCA sensitivity to this phenomenon. The event reconstruction, selection and classification are described. The sensitivity to determine the neutrino mass ordering was evaluated and found to be 4.4 $\sigma$ if the true ordering is normal and 2.3 $\sigma$ if inverted, after three years of data taking. The precision to measure $\Delta m^2_{32}$ and $\theta_{23}$ were also estimated and found to be $85\cdot10^{-6}$ eV$^2$ and $(^{+1.9}_{-3.1})^{\circ}$ for normal neutrino mass ordering and, $75\cdot10^{-6}$ eV$^2$ and $(^{+2.0}_{-7.0})^{\circ}$ for inverted ordering. Finally, a unitarity test of the leptonic mixing matrix by measuring the rate of tau neutrinos is described. Three years of data taking were found to be sufficient to exclude $\nu_{\tau}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\tau}$ event rate variations larger than 20% at $3\sigma$ level., Comment: Accepted for publication at EPJ-C

Abstract

Cosmic rays with energies up to a few PeV are known to be accelerated within the Milky Way. Traditionally, it has been presumed that supernova remnants were the main source of very-high-energy cosmic rays but theoretically it is difficult to get protons to PeV energies and observationally there simply is no evidence to support the remnants as sources of hadrons with energies above a few tens of TeV. One possible source of protons with those energies is the Galactic Center region. Here we report observations of 1-100 TeV gamma rays coming from the 'Cygnus Cocoon', which is a superbubble surrounding a region of OB2 massive star formation. These gamma rays are likely produced by 10-1000 TeV freshly accelerated CRs originating from the enclosed star forming region Cygnus OB2. Hitherto it was not known that such regions could accelerate particles to these energies. The measured flux is likely originated by hadronic interactions. The spectral shape and the emission profile of the Cocoon changes from GeV to TeV energies, which reveals the transport of cosmic particles and historical activity in the superbubble.

Abstract

The KM3NeT research infrastructure is under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of two water Cherenkov neutrino detectors, ARCA and ORCA, aimed at neutrino astrophysics and oscillation research, respectively. Instrumenting a large volume of sea water with $\sim$ 6,200 optical modules comprising a total of $\sim$ 200,000 photomultiplier tubes, KM3NeT will achieve sensitivity to $\sim$ 10 MeV neutrinos from Galactic and near-Galactic core-collapse supernovae through the observation of coincident hits in photomultipliers above the background. In this paper, the sensitivity of KM3NeT to a supernova explosion is estimated from detailed analyses of background data from the first KM3NeT detection units and simulations of the neutrino signal. The KM3NeT observational horizon (for a $5\,\sigma$ discovery) covers essentially the Milky-Way and for the most optimistic model, extends to the Small Magellanic Cloud ($\sim$ 60 kpc). Detailed studies of the time profile of the neutrino signal allow assessment of the KM3NeT capability to determine the arrival time of the neutrino burst with a few milliseconds precision for sources up to 5$-$8 kpc away, and detecting the peculiar signature of the standing accretion shock instability if the core-collapse supernova explosion happens closer than 3$-$5 kpc, depending on the progenitor mass. Abstract

Microquasars with high-mass companion stars are promising very-high-energy (VHE; 0.1-100 TeV) gamma-ray emitters, but their behaviors above 10 TeV are poorly known. Using the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, we search for excess gamma-ray emission coincident with the positions of known high-mass microquasars (HMMQs). No significant emission is observed for LS 5039, Cygnus X-1, Cygnus X-3, and SS 433 with 1,523 days of HAWC data. We set the most stringent limit above 10 TeV obtained to date on each individual source. Under the assumption that HMMQs produce gamma rays via a common mechanism, we have performed source-stacking searches, considering two different scenarios: I) gamma-ray luminosity is a fraction $\epsilon_\gamma$ of the microquasar jet luminosity, and II) very-high-energy gamma rays are produced by relativistic electrons up-scattering the radiation field of the companion star in a magnetic field $B$. We obtain $\epsilon_\gamma < 5.4\times 10^{-6}$ for scenario I, which tightly constrains models that suggest observable high-energy neutrino emission by HMMQs. In the case of scenario II, the non-detection of VHE gamma rays yields a strong magnetic field, which challenges synchrotron radiation as the dominant mechanism of the microquasar emission between 10 keV and 10 MeV., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

Abstract

The study of high-energy gamma rays from passive Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) in our Galaxy is an indirect way to characterize and probe the paradigm of the "sea" of cosmic rays in distant parts of the Galaxy. By using data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, we measure the gamma-ray flux above 1 TeV of a set of these clouds to test the paradigm. We selected high-galactic latitude clouds that are in HAWC's field-of-view and which are within 1~kpc distance from the Sun. We find no significant excess emission in the cloud regions, nor when we perform a stacked log-likelihood analysis of GMCs. Using a Bayesian approach, we calculate 95\% credible intervals upper limits of the gamma-ray flux and estimate limits on the cosmic-ray energy density of these regions. These are the first limits to constrain gamma-ray emission in the multi-TeV energy range ($>$1 TeV) using passive high-galactic latitude GMCs. Assuming that the main gamma-ray production mechanism is due to proton-proton interaction, the upper limits are consistent with a cosmic-ray flux and energy density similar to that measured at Earth., Comment: 6 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

The highest-energy known gamma-ray sources are all located within 0.5 degrees of extremely powerful pulsars. This raises the question of whether ultra-high-energy (UHE; $>$ 56 TeV) gamma-ray emission is a universal feature expected near pulsars with a high spin-down power. Using four years of data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory, we present a joint-likelihood analysis of ten extremely powerful pulsars to search for UHE gamma-ray emission correlated with these locations. We report a significant detection ($>$ 3$\sigma$), indicating that UHE gamma-ray emission is a generic feature of powerful pulsars. We discuss the emission mechanisms of the gamma rays and the implications of this result. Abstract

The MGRO J2019+37 region is one of the brightest sources in the sky at TeV energies. It was detected in the 2 year HAWC catalog as 2HWC J2019+367 and here we present a detailed study of this region using data from HAWC. This analysis resolves the region into two sources: HAWC J2019+368 and HAWC J2016+371. We associate HAWC J2016+371 with the evolved supernova remnant CTB 87, although its low significance in this analysis prevents a detailed study at this time. An investigation of the morphology (including possible energy dependent morphology) and spectrum for HAWC J2019+368 is the focus of this work. We associate HAWC J2019+368 with PSR J2021+3651 and its X-ray pulsar wind nebula, the Dragonfly nebula. Modeling the spectrum measured by HAWC and Suzaku reveals a $\sim$7 kyr pulsar and nebula system producing the observed emission at X-ray and ${\gamma}$-ray energies., Comment: Submitted to ApJ: 13 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The Earth is bombarded by ultra-relativistic particles, known as cosmic rays (CRs). CRs with energies up to a few PeV (=10$^{15}$ eV), the knee in the particle spectrum, are believed to have a Galactic origin. One or more factories of PeV CRs, or PeVatrons, must thus be active within our Galaxy. The direct detection of PeV protons from their sources is not possible since they are deflected in the Galactic magnetic fields. Hundred TeV $\gamma$-rays from decaying $\pi^0$, produced when PeV CRs collide with the ambient gas, can provide the decisive evidence of proton acceleration up to the knee. Here we report the discovery by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory of the $\gamma$-ray source, HAWC~J1825-134, whose energy spectrum extends well beyond 200 TeV without a break or cutoff. The source is found to be coincident with a giant molecular cloud. The ambient gas density is as high as 700 protons/cm$^3$. While the nature of this extreme accelerator remains unclear, CRs accelerated to energies of several PeV colliding with the ambient gas likely produce the observed radiation., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

Abstract

The Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (SCT) is a telescope concept proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array. It employs a dual-mirror optical design to remove comatic aberrations over an $8^{\circ}$ field of view, and a high-density silicon photomultiplier camera (with a pixel resolution of 4 arcmin) to record Cherenkov emission from cosmic ray and gamma-ray initiated particle cascades in the atmosphere. The prototype SCT (pSCT), comprising a 9.7 m diameter primary mirror and a partially instrumented camera with 1536 pixels, has been constructed at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory. The telescope was inaugurated in January 2019, with commissioning continuing throughout 2019. We describe the first campaign of observations with the pSCT, conducted in January and February of 2020, and demonstrate the detection of gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula with a statistical significance of $8.6\sigma$., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

The discovery of the TeV point source 2HWC J2006+341 was reported in the second HAWC gamma-ray catalog. We present a follow-up study of this source here. The TeV emission is best described by an extended source with a soft spectrum. At GeV energies, an extended source is significantly detected in Fermi-LAT data. The matching locations, sizes and spectra suggest that both gamma-ray detections correspond to the same source. Different scenarios for the origin of the emission are considered and we rule out an association to the pulsar PSR J2004+3429 due to extreme energetics required, if located at a distance of 10.8 kpc., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

The surface atomic and electronic structure after deposition of 1/3 monolayer (ML) Te on Cu(111) was determined using a combination of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), angle-resolved single and two-photon photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES /AR-2PPE) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Contrary to the current state in literature Te does not create a two-dimensional surface alloy but forms Cu$_2$Te$_2$ adsorbate chains in a $\left(2\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}\right)\textrm{R30}^\circ$ superstructure. We establish this by a high-precision LEED-IV structural analysis with Pendry $R$ factor of $R = 0.099$ and corroborating DFT and STM results. The electronic structure of the surface phase is dominated by an anisotropic downward dispersing state at the Fermi energy $E_F$ and a more isotropic upward dispersing unoccupied state at $E-E_F = + 1.43\,\textrm{eV}$. Both states coexist with bulk states of the projected band structure and are therefore surface resonances.

Abstract

The High Altitude Water Cherenkov Gamma-Ray Observatory (HAWC) continuously detects TeV photons and particles within its large field-of-view, accumulating every day a deeper exposure of two thirds of the sky. We analyzed 1523~days of HAWC live data acquired over four and a half years, in a follow-up analysis of {138} nearby ($z<0.3$) active galactic nuclei from the {\em Fermi} 3FHL catalog culminating within $40^\circ$ of the zenith at Sierra Negra, the HAWC site. This search for persistent TeV emission used a maximum-likelihood analysis assuming intrinsic power-law spectra attenuated by pair production of gamma-ray photons with the extragalactic background light. HAWC clearly detects persistent emission from Mkn~421 and Mkn~501, the two brightest blazars in the TeV sky, at 65$\sigma$ and 17$\sigma$ level, respectively. {Weaker evidence for long-term emission is found for three other known very-high energy emitters:} the radiogalaxy M87 and the BL Lac objects VER~J0521+211 and 1ES~1215+303, the later two at $z\sim 0.1$. We find evidence for collective emission from the set of 30 previously reported very high-energy sources that excludes Mkn~421 and Mkn~501 with a random probability $\sim 10^{-5}$. Abstract

High-temperature superconducting cuprates exhibit an intriguing phenomenology for the low-energy elementary excitations. In particular, an unconventional temperature dependence of the coherent spectral weight (CSW) has been observed in the superconducting phase by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), both at the antinode where the d-wave paring gap is maximum, as well as along the gapless nodal direction. Here, we combine equilibrium and time-resolved ARPES to track the temperature dependent meltdown of the nodal CSW in Bi-based cuprates with unprecedented sensitivity. We find the nodal suppression of CSW upon increasing temperature to be ubiquitous across single- and double-layer Bi cuprates, and uncorrelated to superconducting and pseudogap onset temperatures. We quantitatively model both the lineshape of the nodal spectral features and the anomalous suppression of CSW within the Fermi-Liquid framework, establishing the key role played by the normal state electrodynamics in the description of nodal quasiparticles in superconducting cuprates., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; Supplementary Materials available upon request

Abstract

By quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) we investigate the extensively studied commensurate charge density wave (CDW) phase of trigonal tantalum disulphide (1T-TaS$_2$), which develops at low temperatures with a $\left(\sqrt{13}\times\sqrt{13}\right)$R13.9{\deg} periodicity. A full-dynamical analysis of the energy dependence of diffraction spot intensities reveals the entire crystallographic surface structure, i.e. the detailed atomic positions within the outermost two trilayers consisting of 78 atoms as well as the CDW stacking. The analysis is based on an unusually large data set consisting of spectra for 128 inequivalent beams taken in the energy range 20-250 eV and an excellent fit quality expressed by a bestfit Pendry R-factor of R=0.110. The LEED intensity analysis reveals that the well-accepted model of star-of-David-shaped clusters of Ta atoms for the bulk structure also holds for the outermost two TaS$_2$ trilayers. Specifically, in both layers the clusters of Ta atoms contract laterally by up to 0.25 $\r{A}$ and also slightly rotate within the superstructure cell, causing respective distortions as well as heavy bucklings (up to 0.23 $\r{A}$) in the adjacent sulphur layers. Most importantly, our analysis finds that the CDWs of the 1$^{\text{st}}$ and 2$^{\text{nd}}$ trilayer are vertically aligned, while there is a lateral shift of two units of the basic hexagonal lattice (6.71 $\r{A}$) between the 2$^{\text{nd}}$ and 3$^{\text{rd}}$ trilayer. The results may contribute to a better understanding of the intricate electronic structure of the reference compound 1T-TaS$_2$ and guide the way to the analysis of complex structures in similar quantum materials., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

Neuromorphic computing has the potential to further the success of software-based artificial neural networks (ANNs) by designing hardware from a different perspective. Current research in neuromorphic hardware targets dramatic improvements to ANN performance by increasing energy efficiency, speed of operation, and even seeks to extend the utility of ANNs by natively adding functionality such as spiking operation. One promising neuromorphic hardware platform is based on superconductive electronics, which has the potential to incorporate all of these advantages at the device level in addition to offering the potential of near lossless communications both within the neuromorphic circuits as well as between disparate superconductive chips. Here we explore one of the fundamental brain-inspired architecture components, the fan-in and fan-out as realized in superconductive circuits based on Josephson junctions. From our calculations and WRSPICE simulations we find that the fan-out should be limited only by junction count and circuit size limitations, and we demonstrate results in simulation at a level of 1-to-10,000, similar to that of the human brain. We find that fan-in has more limitations, but a fan-in level on the order of a few 100-to-1 should be achievable based on current technology. We discuss our findings and the critical parameters that set the limits on fan-in and fan-out in the context of superconductive neuromorphic circuits., Comment: 17 pages 10 figures

Abstract

Motivated by the importance of magnetization dynamics in nanomagnets for the development and optimization of magnetic devices and sensors, we measured and modeled spin wave spectra in patterned elliptical nanomagnets. Ferromagnetic resonance spectra for multiple nanomagnets of Ni80Fe20 , fabricated by electron-beam lithography to have nominal short-axes of 200 nm or 100 nm, were measured by use of heterodyne magneto-optical microwave microscopy. Scanning electron microscope images taken of the same nanomagnets were used to define element shapes for micromagnetic simulations. Measured spectra show significant differences between nominally identical nanomagnets, which could be only partially attributed to uncontrolled shape variations in the patterning process, as evidence by the limited agreement between the measured and simulated spectra. Agreement between measurements and simulations was improved by including a zone of reduced magnetization and exchange at the edges of the nanomagnets in the simulations. Our results show that the reduction of shape variations between individual magnetic random-access memory elements can potentially improve their performance. However, unambiguous determination of materials parameters in nanomagnets based on analysis and modeling of spin wave spectra remains problematic.

Abstract

Filtered diode array spectrometers are routinely employed to infer the temporal evolution of spectral power from x-ray sources, but uniquely extracting spectral content from a finite set of broad, spectrally overlapping channel spectral sensitivities is decidedly nontrivial in these underdetermined systems. We present the use of genetic algorithms to reconstruct a probabilistic spectral intensity distribution and compare to the traditional approach most commonly found in literature. Unlike many of the previously published models, spectral reconstructions from this approach are neither limited by basis functional forms, nor do they require a priori spectral knowledge. While the original intent of such measurements was to diagnose the temporal evolution of spectral power from quasi-blackbody radiation sources, where the exact details of spectral content was not thought to be crucial, we demonstrate that this new technique can greatly enhance the utility of the diagnostic by providing more physical spectra and improved robustness to hardware configuration for even strongly non-Planckian distributions.

Abstract

We present a new catalog of TeV gamma-ray sources using 1523 days of data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory. The catalog represents the most sensitive survey of the Northern gamma-ray sky at energies above several TeV, with three times the exposure compared to the previous HAWC catalog, 2HWC. We report 65 sources detected at $\geq$ 5 sigma significance, along with the positions and spectral fits for each source. The catalog contains eight sources that have no counterpart in the 2HWC catalog, but are within $1^\circ$ of previously detected TeV emitters, and twenty sources that are more than $1^\circ$ away from any previously detected TeV source. Of these twenty new sources, fourteen have a potential counterpart in the fourth \textit{Fermi} Large Area Telescope catalog of gamma-ray sources. We also explore potential associations of 3HWC sources with pulsars in the ATNF pulsar catalog and supernova remnants in the Galactic supernova remnant catalog., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. Abstract

We use time-resolved x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (tr-XRMS) at the Co M$_{2,3}$- and Tb O$_1$-edges to study ultrafast demagnetization in an amorphous Co$_{88}$Tb$_{12}$ alloy with stripe domains. Combining the femtosecond temporal with nanometer spatial resolution of our experiment, we demonstrate that the equilibrium spin texture of the thin film remains unaltered by the optical pump-pulse on ultrashort timescales ($<$1 ps). However, after $\simeq$ 4 ps, we observe the onset of a significant domain wall broadening, which we attribute to a reduction of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the system, due to energy transfer to the lattice. Static temperature dependent magnetometry measurements combined with analytical modeling of the magnetic structure of the thin film corroborate this interpretation.

Abstract

Relaxation of linear magnetization dynamics is well described by the viscous Gilbert damping processes. However, for strong excitations, nonlinear damping processes such as the decay via magnon-magnon interactions emerge and trigger additional relaxation channels. Here, we use space- and time-resolved microfocused Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and micromagnetic simulations to investigate the nonlinear relaxation of strongly driven propagating spin waves in yttrium iron garnet nanoconduits. We show that the nonlinear magnon relaxation in this highly quantized system possesses intermodal features, i.e., magnons scatter to higher-order quantized modes through a cascade of scattering events. We further show how to control such intermodal dissipation processes by quantization of the magnon band in single-mode devices, where this phenomenon approaches its fundamental limit. Our study extends the knowledge about nonlinear propagating spin waves in nanostructures which is essential for the construction of advanced spin-wave elements as well as the realization of Bose-Einstein condensates in scaled systems., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present the detection of VHE gamma-ray emission above 100 TeV from HAWC J2227+610 with the HAWC observatory. Combining our observations with previously published results by VERITAS, we interpret the gamma-ray emission from HAWC J2227+610 as emission from protons with a lower limit in their cutoff energy of 800 TeV. The most likely source of the protons is the associated supernova remnant G106.3+2.7, making it a good candidate for a Galactic PeVatron. 93. Blending and obscuration in weak lensing magnification

Abstract

We test the impact of some systematic errors in weak lensing magnification measurements with the COSMOS 30-band photo-$z$ Survey flux limited to $I_{auto}<25.0$ using correlations of both source galaxy counts and magnitudes. Systematic obscuration effects are measured by comparing counts and magnification correlations. We use the ACS-HST catalogs to identify potential blending objects (close pairs) and perform the magnification analyses with and without blended objects. We find that blending effects start to be important ($\sim$ 0.04~mag obscuration) at angular scales smaller than 0.1 arcmin. Extinction and other systematic obscuration effects can be as large as 0.10~mag (U-band) but are typically smaller than 0.02~mag depending on the band. After applying these corrections, we measure a $3.9\sigma$ magnification signal that is consistent for both counts and magnitudes. The corresponding projected mass profiles of galaxies at redshift $z \simeq 0.6$ ($M_I \simeq -21$) is $\Sigma= 25\pm 6 M_{sun}h^3/pc^2$ at 0.1 Mpc/h, consistent with NFW type profile with $M_{200} \simeq 2 \times 10^{12} M_{sun} h/pc^2$. Tangential shear and flux-size magnification over the same lenses show similar mass profiles. We conclude that magnification from counts and fluxes using photometric redshifts has the potential to provide complementary weak lensing information in future wide field surveys once we carefully take into account systematic effects, such as obscuration and blending., Comment: matches version accepted in MNRAS

Abstract

We report on the impact of anisotropy to tokamak plasma configuration and stability. Our focus is on analysis of the impact of anisotropy on ITER pre-fusion power operation 5~MA, $B=1.8$~T ICRH scenarios. To model ITER scenarios remapping tools are developed to distinguish the impact of pressure anisotropy from the change in magnetic geometry caused by an anisotropy-modified current profile. The remappings iterate the anisotropy-modified current profile to produce the same $q$ profile with matched thermal energy. The analysis is a step toward equilibria that are kinetically self-consistent for a prescribed scenario. We find characteristic detachment of flux surfaces from pressure surfaces, and an outboard (inboard) shift of peak density for $T_{\parallel}>T_\perp$ ( $T_{\parallel}

Abstract

Cosmic rays, along with stellar radiation and magnetic fields, are known to make up a significant fraction of the energy density of galaxies such as the Milky Way. When cosmic rays interact in the interstellar medium, they produce gamma-ray emission which provides an important indication of how the cosmic rays propagate. Gamma rays from the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), located 785 kpc away, provide a unique opportunity to study cosmic-ray acceleration and diffusion in a galaxy with a structure and evolution very similar to the Milky Way. Using 33 months of data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory, we search for TeV gamma rays from the galactic plane of M31. We also investigate past and present evidence of galactic activity in M31 by searching for Fermi Bubble-like structures above and below the galactic nucleus. No significant gamma-ray emission is observed, so we use the null result to compute upper limits on the energy density of cosmic rays $>10$ TeV in M31. The computed upper limits are approximately ten times higher than expected from the extrapolation of the Fermi LAT results., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

The Rashba effect is fundamental to the physics of two-dimensional electron systems and underlies a variety of spintronic phenomena. It has been proposed that the formation of Rashba-type spin splittings originates microscopically from the existence of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the Bloch wave functions. Here, we present detailed experimental evidence for this OAM-based origin of the Rashba effect by angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) and two-photon photoemission (2PPE) experiments for a monolayer AgTe on Ag(111). Using quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) analysis we determine the structural parameters and the stacking of the honeycomb overlayer with picometer precision. Based on an orbital-symmetry analysis in ARPES and supported by first-principles calculations, we unequivocally relate the presence and absence of Rashba-type spin splittings in different bands of AgTe to the existence of OAM.

Abstract

Due to the high energies and long distances to the sources, astrophysical observations provide a unique opportunity to test possible signatures of Lorentz invariance violation (LIV). Superluminal LIV enables the decay of photons at high energy. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is among the most sensitive gamma-ray instruments currently operating above 10 TeV. HAWC finds evidence of 100 TeV photon emission from at least four astrophysical sources. These observations exclude, for the strongest of the limits set, the LIV energy scale to $2.2\times10^{31}$ eV, over 1800 times the Planck energy and an improvement of 1 to 2 orders of magnitude over previous limits., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

We present the experimental demonstration of the parallel parametric generation of spin-waves in a microscaled yttrium iron garnet waveguide with nanoscale thickness. Using Brillouin light scattering microscopy, we observe the excitation of the first and second waveguide modes generated by a stripline microwave pumping source. Micromagnetic simulations reveal the wave vector of the parametrically generated spin-waves. Based on analytical calculations, which are in excellent agreement with our experiments and simulations, we prove that the spin-wave radiation losses are the determinative term of the parametric instability threshold in this miniaturized system. The used method enables the direct excitation and amplification of nanometer spin-waves dominated by exchange interactions. Our results pave the way for integrated magnonics based on insulating nano-magnets., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) may have been created by density fluctuations in the early Universe and could be as massive as $> 10^9$ solar masses or as small as the Planck mass. It has been postulated that a black hole has a temperature inversely-proportional to its mass and will thermally emit all species of fundamental particles via Hawking Radiation. PBHs with initial masses of $\sim 5 \times 10^{14}$ g (approximately one gigaton) should be expiring today with bursts of high-energy gamma radiation in the GeV--TeV energy range. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is sensitive to gamma rays with energies of $\sim$300 GeV to past 100 TeV, which corresponds to the high end of the PBH burst spectrum. With its large instantaneous field-of-view of $\sim 2$ sr and a duty cycle over 95%, the HAWC Observatory is well suited to perform an all-sky search for PBH bursts. We conducted a search using 959 days of HAWC data and exclude the local PBH burst rate density above $3400~\mathrm{pc^{-3}~yr^{-1}}$ at 99% confidence, the strongest limit on the local PBH burst rate density from any existing electromagnetic measurement., Comment: Corresponding authors: K.L.
