The Australian Language Levels (ALL) Project offers a coherent model for elementary and secondary language curriculum design. Book 4 of the four-volume series discusses aspects of curriculum change and inservice teacher education, emphasizing the fact that curriculum and staff development are ongoing processes. A section on implementing curriculum change looks at trends and directions in curriculum development, the concept of curriculum renewal, and the teacher's role in that process. A discussion of evaluation as it relates to curriculum renewal focuses on the purposes and processes of curriculum evaluation and the use of the ALL guidelines to that end. Principles guiding and conditions promoting teacher education are examined, and general and specific issues in the planning of inservice teacher education programs are outlined. Coordination of inservice activities is also addressed. Appended materials include forms for syllabus and program evaluation, evaluation of the teaching/learning approach according to the eight principles of language learning outlined in Book 1, evaluation of resources, and evaluation of the student assessment process and method. The Australian Language Levels (ALL) Project, begun in 1985 to develop an organizational framework and curriculum guidelines for language instruction in elementary and secondary education, offers a coherent model for curriculum design drawing on recent research on teaching and learning. The first volume in the four-volume series outlines the current context of language teaching and learning in Australia. It contains: an overview of the ALL guidelines; discussion of the values of language learning both for the individual and as a national resource; a summary of the ALL Project; a brief discussion of the need for language curriculum renewal; a description of the school language learning context in Australia, including student characteristics, common program types, the range of languages taught, and conditions promoting school language learning; a review of developments in approaches to language teaching and learning, from classical humanism through reconstructionism and progressivism to the balanced approach of the ALL Project; eight principles to guide the teaching and learning process; discussion of the goals of language learning, including their development, broad categories, and integration in the curriculum; and the framework of progressive, interlocking, and age-related instructional stages proposed by the ALL Project. The Australian Language Levels (ALL) Project offers a coherent model for elementary and secondary language curriculum design. Book 2 of the four-volume series elaborates on each of the major features of the ALL Project proposal for language curricula outlined in Book 1, focusing on the syllabus, suggesting possible content at different instructional stages, and describing procedures for planning of both syllabuses and classroom instruction. The volume contains: an introductory overview of the ALL Project and curriculum framework; a detailed description of foreign language syllabus organization and content, including the instructional stages, learner characteristics influencing syllabus content at the different stages, case study examples, general and specific goals, the concept of an activities-based syllabus, the activity-type as an organizing unit of syllabus design, and guidelines for sequencing syllabus content through activities; an overview of the syllabus development process; and a discussion of issues in classroom programming, including factors to be considered, the program development process, and useful programming tools. Appended materials include a statement on specific syllabus content, statements of suggested syllabus content for each instructional stage and examples of instructional units. Contains 88 references. In this paper we draw attention to people who journey from one temporal and spatial setting towards another in the 'South', who aspire to a reconfigured sense of belonging, prosperity and wellbeing, and their multilinguality and multilingualisms. Through three vignettes of journeys we illustrate how in changing of place that linguistic diversities are encountered and mediated. During moments of North-South and South-South entanglement and exception we argue that multilingualisms re-ecologise along horizontal axes of conviviality, and / or re-index along vertical axes of exclusion. We suggest that 'rooting' and 'rerouting' multilingualisms are not only multidimensional, but they are also multifaceted as people who choose or are obliged to experience dis-placement, undertake journeys of anticipation of replacement into regulated or unregulated situations. Multilingualisms in the memories, dreams, complex selves, materiality and complicities of coping have yet to receive sufficient attention from linguists. We attempt to capture these aspects and suggest that southern multilingualisms have much to offer and entice northern multilingualisms. We illustrate how closely integrated are multilingual repertoires with mobilities and temporalities of dislocation and change; with loss, nostalgia and the anticipation of new beginnings; and with multi-scaled complicities between individuals as they re-calibrate lives in turbulent and changing circumstances.
