Abstract

The Red River basin is a typical Asian river system affected by climate and anthropogenic changes. The purpose of this study is to build a tool to separate the effect of climate variability and anthropogenic influences on hydrology and suspended sediments. A modeling method combining in situ and climatic satellite data was used to analyze the discharge (Q) and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) at a daily time scale from 2000 to 2014. Scenarios of natural and actual conditions were implemented to quantify the impacts of climate variability and dams. The modeling gained satisfactory simulation results of water regime and SSC compared to the observations. Under natural conditions, the Q and SSC show decreasing tendencies, and climate variability is the main influence factor reducing the Q. Under actual conditions, SSC is mainly reduced by dams. At the outlet, annual mean Q got reduced by 13% (9% by climate and 4% by dams), and annual mean SSC got reduced to 89% (13% due to climate and 76% due to dams) of that under natural conditions. The climate tendencies are mainly explained by a decrease of 9% on precipitation and 5% on evapotranspiration, which results in a 13% decrease of available water for the whole basin.

Abstract

A study was conducted on GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum well mid-infrared intersubband stimulated emission under optical pumping. Two-color picosecond free-electron laser-based time-resolved pump-probe experiments were employed for gain measurements. The stimulated gain exhibited broadening caused by mid-infrared waveguide coupled high intensities. The stimulated gain may be applied in the development of long-wavelength intersubband lasers under optical pumping.

65. Assessment of ecological function indicators related to nitrate under multiple human stressors in a large watershed

Abstract

Important ecological functions indicators, such as nitrate net balance (NNB), including nitrate removal (NR) and nitrate production (NP), seem to be impacted by human stressors and climate change, particularly during low flow periods associated with high nitrate pollution. NR is induced by in-stream processes such as nitrate uptake, denitrification, and transient storage. These processes are usually investigated by means of in-situ measurements, but the evaluation on a large scale is not yet developed. Hence, the objectives of this study are (i) to validate a model that quantifies NR indicator in a reach at a monthly time step in the Garonne watershed; (ii) use this model to quantify NR in all reaches at watershed scale; (iii) to analyze NR spatially and temporally at the reach scale, and finally (iv) to identify drivers influencing NR patterns. We used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to simulate the impact of human stressors such as land management and municipalities effluents on in-stream nitrogen cycles. The results show the seasonal variation of NR and NP ranging between −1.77 gN.m−2.d−1 and +1.62 gN.m−2.d−1. NR is stronger during the spring and summer periods (median of −0.1 gN.m−2. d−1). The hot spots of NP are located downstream in the main rivers whereas NR strongly occurs in small reaches of lowlands and intermediate streams defined by a Strahler order between 3 and 5 and a slope under 0.5%. NR is stronger in hillsides areas such as forests, wetlands and surprisingly agricultural areas and NP increases down in the municipalities due to the effluents. The spatio-temporal variability of NR makes the validation of the model for reaches with Strahler number more difficult than the measured one. However, this study shows that the NNB dynamics in time and space depend on a combination of influencing factors (slope, discharge and hydraulic condition explained by Froude number and nitrate concentration). Abstract

The optical emission of germanium-based luminescent and/or laser devices can be enhanced by tensile strain and n-type doping. In this work, we study by simulation the interplay between electrical transport and optical gain in highly n-doped and intrinsic germanium p-n heterostructure diodes under tensile strain. The effects of strain and doping on carrier mobilities and energy distribution are taken into account. Whereas the n-doping of Ge enhances the filling of the indirect L and Brillouin zone-center conduction band states, the n-doping also reduces the carrier injection efficiency, which is detrimental for the achievement of optical gain at reduced current densities. For applied biaxial strains larger than 1.25%, i.e., far before reaching the cross-over from indirect to direct band gap regime, undoped germanium exhibits a lower optical gain threshold as compared to doped germanium. We also show that the threshold current needed to reach transparency in germanium heterostructures has been significantly underestimated in the previous works. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The integration of nitride semiconductors on a silicon platform is a very promising field for nanophotonic applications in the UV-blue spectral range. Efficient sources are a main topic that can be achieved by compact microlasers based on GaN/AlN and InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQW) grown on a silicon substrate. The epitaxy of these structures is performed by the controlled-growth of an AlN and GaN buffer layers to prevent from dislocations. To obtain versatile and efficient micro-emitters, the technological development of micro-resonator has been improved for nitride MQW micro-disks on silicon. This unique Nitride-on-Silicon platform has been allowed by releasing the micro-disk membrane with selective under-etching of the silicon substrate. For integrated photonics applications, these micro-disks can be electrically powered but also coupled to optical waveguides to a better extract of the emission. We have already shown that we can reach a few thousand for the quality factor of the microdisks with nitride MQW grown by MBE1 but also in nitride-on-silicon photonic crystal cavities2. The laser emission of the microdisks under optical pumping and at room temperature was obtained over a broad spectral range extending from 275 nm to 470 nm1.Here we investigate the physics of the micro-resonators with InGaN/GaN MQW grown by MOCVD. Photoluminescence (PL) emission is probed under pulsed optical pumping at 266 nm. Laser emission is reached at room temperature at 390 nm. We focus on the gain properties of the InGaN/GaN MQW active layer. We have investigated the temperature dependence of the microlaser threshold vs temperature. We show that the typical T0 for these microlaser is elevated (T0=77K), meaning that the temperature dependence around room temperature is reduced. We also model the spectra to extract the carrier density at threshold. And we will draw up a comparison with InGaN/GaN MQW microlasers grown by MBE.References: 1M. Abstract

The French critical zone initiative, called OZCAR (Observatoires de la Zone Critique–Application et Recherche or Critical Zone Observatories–Application and Research) is a National Research Infrastructure (RI). OZCAR-RI is a network of instrumented sites, bringing together 21 pre-existing research observatories monitoring different compartments of the zone situated between “the rock and the sky,” the Earth’s skin or critical zone (CZ), over the long term. These observatories are regionally based and have specific initial scientific questions, monitoring strategies, databases, and modeling activities. The diversity of OZCAR-RI observatories and sites is well representative of the heterogeneity of the CZ and of the scientific communities studying it. Despite this diversity, all OZCAR-RI sites share a main overarching mandate, which is to monitor, understand, and predict (“earthcast”) the fluxes of water and matter of the Earth’s near surface and how they will change in response to the “new climatic regime.” The vision for OZCAR strategic development aims at designing an open infrastructure, building a national CZ community able to share a systemic representation of the CZ , and educating a new generation of scientists more apt to tackle the wicked problem of the Anthropocene. OZCAR articulates around: (i) a set of common scientific questions and cross-cutting scientific activities using the wealth of OZCAR-RI observatories, (ii) an ambitious instrumental development program, and (iii) a better interaction between data and models to integrate the different time and spatial scales. Internationally, OZCAR-RI aims at strengthening the CZ community by providing a model of organization for pre-existing observatories and by offering CZ instrumented sites. OZCAR is one of two French mirrors of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (eLTER-ESFRI) project.

Abstract

Ethane and propane are the most abundant non-methane hydrocarbons in the atmosphere. However, their emissions, atmospheric distribution, and trends in their atmospheric concentrations are insufficiently understood. Atmospheric model simulations using standard community emission inventories do not reproduce available measurements in the Northern Hemisphere. Here, we show that observations of pre-industrial and present-day ethane and propane can be reproduced in simulations with a detailed atmospheric chemistry transport model, provided that natural geologic emissions are taken into account and anthropogenic fossil fuel emissions are assumed to be two to three times higher than is indicated in current inventories. Accounting for these enhanced ethane and propane emissions results in simulated surface ozone concentrations that are 5-13% higher than previously assumed in some polluted regions in Asia. The improved correspondence with observed ethane and propane in model simulations with greater emissions suggests that the level of fossil (geologic + fossil fuel) methane emissions in current inventories may need re-evaluation. © 2018 The Author(s).

86. Evidence for Efficacy of Treatment with the Anti-PD-1 Mab Nivolumab in Radiation and Multichemorefractory Advanced Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PeSCC) is a rare tumor and advanced PeSCC is associated with poor survival due to the aggressiveness of the disease and lack of effective systemic therapies. We describe for the first time a case with advanced chemoradiation refractory PeSCC who had documented response to active immunotherapy with the immune checkpoint inhibitor, anti-programmed death-1 monoclonal antibody Nivolumab. The patient suffered from a poor prognosis human papillomavirus-negative PeSCC, with a somatic inactivation mutation of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A) gene in tumor cells, and treatment with Nivolumab resulted in a partial response to therapy and significant tumor shrinkage. Histology transitions and alterations in tumorinfiltrating cytotoxic CD8+ T-cell lymphocytes, programmed death ligand-1 expression on tumor cells and immune cells in tumor lesion biopsies pretreatment and posttreatment with Nivolumab were observed and described. In conclusion, in patients with metastatic PeSCC active immunotherapy combinations with an anti-programmed death-1/programmed death ligand-1 agent may be beneficial and further relative clinical studies are required.
