Abstract

We present a series of studies based on high-resolution UVES/VLT spectroscopy of several faint stars for which a transit by a giant planet has been detected. The spectra were used to derive accurate stellar parameters and chemical abundances for the targets, as well as to estimate their ages and galactic cartesian coordinates. The results are discussed in the context of the chemical abundances of stars with known giant planets. Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the pregnancy outcome after laparoscopic tubal anastomosis. Methods: From December 1998 to December 2001, 26 patients with bilateral tubal ligation who underwent laparoscopic tubal anastomosis were prospectively evaluated. Patients’ age varied from 28 to 37 years. Results: Laparoscopic tubal reversal was performed in 23 patients. Bilateral reversal was possible in all but two patients. The operation time ranged from 95 to 155 min and all patients were discharged in the following morning after surgery. After 3 months, tubal patency was confirmed in 15 patients (15/23). Pregnancy rate was 56.5% (13/23), without ectopic pregnancies. The average time from tubal reversal and pregnancy was 6 months. Conclusions: In selected cases, laparoscopic tubal reversal can be offered to patients who had been submitted to tubal sterilization and desire new pregnancies. Patient selection as well as meticulous surgical technique are key factors in achieving satisfactory pregnancy rates. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The spectroscopic analysis of systems with transiting planets gives strong constraints on planetary masses and radii as well as the chemical composition of the systems. The properties of the system OGLETR10 are not wellconstrained, partly due to the discrepancy of previous measurements of the effective temperature of the host star.This work, which is fully independent from previous works in terms of data reduction and analysis, uses the Hαprofile in order to get an additional constraint on the effective temperature. We take previously published UVESobservations which have the highest available signaltonoise ratio for OGLETR10. A proper normalization to the relative continuum is done using intermediate data products of the reduction pipeline of the UVES spectrograph. The effective temperature then is determined by fitting synthetic Hαprofiles to the observed spectrum.With a result of Teff 6020 ± 140 K, the Hαprofile clearly favours one of the previous measurements. The Hαline is further consistent with dwarflike surface gravities as well as solar and supersolar metallicities previously derived for OGLETR10.The Hαline could not be used to its full potential, partly because of the varying shape of the UVES échelle orders after flat field correction.
