Due to its history, recharge-discharge mechanisms, geologic formations and the hydrodynamic characteristics, the groundwater of the Morsott-El Aouinet basin show a very wide range of chemistries. In this paper the groundwater hydrochemistry is studied through sampling from wells in the studied area. Hydrochemical members are identified and the sources of water salinization are defined. It was found that the evaporate within the Triassic rocks are the main contributors to the salinization of groundwater. The ionic speciation and mineral dissolution/ precipitation was calculated by WATEQF software. The increase in salinity is related to the dissolution and/or precipitation processes during the water-rock interaction and to the cationic exchange reactions between groundwater and clay minerals. The isotopic analysis of some groundwater samples shows a similarity with the meteoric waters and indicates no significant isotopic modifications by evaporation, which means that the recharge of the aquifer is quite rapid and the residence time of meteoric water in the soil zone is short. BACKGROUND: There is a need for studies on bilingual language acquisition in combination with language impairment (LI). The speech and language clinician must have tools to differentiate between problems depending on inadequate exposure to a language and problems depending on a LI. Another important issue is the pace of bilingual language acquisition relative to the severity of LI. AIMS: To investigate grammatical development over 12 months in both languages in 10 Swedish-Arabic pre-school children with severe LI and 10 Swedish-Arabic pre-school children without LI. METHODS & PROCEDURES: The children were matched for age, gender, exposure to Swedish dialect, and exposure to Arabic dialect. The developmental hierarchy predicted by Processability Theory was used in tests in both Swedish and Arabic. Processability Theory was used as a yardstick to measure grammatical development in both languages. OUTCOME & RESULTS: Bilingual children, both with and without LI, developed grammatical structures in Swedish and Arabic in the same implicational way. Children with severe LI could develop two languages, although the pace of development was much slower in both languages. Bilingual children with severe LI were also more vulnerable to limited exposure of both their languages. CONCLUSIONS: A developmental perspective is important to understand the nature of LI in bilingual children. The results also have implications for the assessment of language development in bilingual children with severe LI, since a hardly perceptible development over time is observed. Unlabelled: In this study two groups of children were compared, 192 bilingual and 246 monolingual, referred over a 12-mo period to University Hospital in Malmö for suspected language impairment. Compared with monolingual children, bilingual children ran a significantly lower risk (RR = 0.76, p < 0.0001) of being referred by a child health centre, and a significantly higher risk (RR= 1.54, p < 0.0103) of being referred after 5 y of age. In the bilingual group there was also a significantly higher risk of parental refusal of assessment (RR = 2.35, p < 0.0016) and of the children being diagnosed with a severe language impairment (RR = 1.87, p < 0.0009). The risk for bilingual children with severe language impairment being discharged owing to non-attendance was high (RR = 6.20, p < 0.0002) compared to monolingual children. The risk increased with severity of language impairment.Conclusion: Bilingual children displayed a higher risk of a diagnosis of severe language impairment and of being discharged for non-attendance. Introduction: Stress and burnout rank among the foremost dentistry-related concerns. Understanding stress and burnout among Palestinian dentists is crucial for developing targeted interventions and support systems. The study aimed to assess stress levels among dentists in Palestine, identify factors contributing to stress, and determine the relationship between stress and burnout in this professional group., Method: ology: A cross-sectional study was conducted, employing a self-administered questionnaire to gather data from 271 dentists from March to June 2023. The Maslach burnout inventory was utilized to measure burnout across emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment dimensions, while the 10-item perceived stress scale was employed to measure stress levels., Results: The findings revealed that 81% of Palestinian dentists reported experiencing moderate to high levels of stress. Emotional exhaustion was a prominent aspect of burnout, with 48% of participants reporting high levels. The multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated a significant association between stress scores and female participants (p = 0.001), daily sleeping hours (p = 0.016), as well as emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment burnout subscales (p ≤ 0.001 for both)., Conclusion: The study revealed high-stress levels among Palestinian dentists, which were associated with sex and daily sleep hours. Furthermore, burnout was prevalent among dentists, particularly in terms of emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment, which were strongly associated with increased stress levels. The results underscore the need for targeted interventions and support mechanisms tailored to factors facing dentists, especially among females and those who receive inadequate sleep. Background: Migraine is a prevalent episodic brain disorder known for recurrent attacks of unilateral headaches, accompanied by complaints of photophobia, phonophobia, nausea, and vomiting. Two main categories of migraine are migraine with aura (MA) and migraine without aura (MO). Main body: Early twin and population studies have shown a genetic basis for these disorders, and efforts have been invested since to discern the genes involved. Many techniques, including candidate-gene association studies, loci linkage studies, genome-wide association, and transcription studies, have been used for this goal. As a result, several genes were pinned with concurrent and conflicting data among studies. It is important to understand the evolution of techniques and their findings. Conclusions: This review provides a chronological understanding of the different techniques used from the dawn of migraine genetic investigations and the genes linked with the migraine subtypes.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has long been studied in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), due to the fact that both disorders are commonly associated with an increased body mass index (BMI). However, a link between OSA and non-obese diabetic patients is still not very elaborated, nor heavily explored. In this review, we elucidate some proposed mechanisms for the link between OSA and diabetic patients both with and beyond obesity, shedding the light on the latter case. One such mechanism is oxidative stress, a phenomenon of reactive oxygen species (ROS) imbalance seen in both of the previously mentioned disorders. A plausible explanation for the OSA-induced ROS production is the repeating episodes of hypoxia and reperfusion and their effect on the mitochondrial electron transport chain. This paper explores the literature regarding ROS imbalance as the possible missing link between OSA and Diabetes Mellitus beyond obesity, while still mentioning other possible proposed mechanisms such as a dysregulated autonomic nervous system (ANS), as well as mechanical and craniofacial abnormalities. This paper also suggests a link between OSA and diabetic complications, while exploring the clinical progress made in treating the former disorder with anti-oxidant and hypo-glycemic drugs. Aim: COVID-19 pandemic has spread widely at unpreceded pace. Cardiovascular comorbidities are significantly correlated with severe and critical illness. Nevertheless, studies examining the impact of congenital heart disease on COVID-19 severity are scarce and restricted to hospitalized patients. This study aims to explore the course of COVID-19 illness, severity and complications in patients with concomitant congenital heart disease., Methodology: This study is a cross sectional survey that includes patients with congenital heart disease who are registered at the Children Heart Center at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. The survey was conducted in the pediatric cardiology outpatient clinics or remotely via phone calls., Results: A total of 238 patients participated in the study, of which 47.9% had suspected or confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The majority of patients had mild illness. The symptoms ranged between rhinorrhea (15.6%), cough (15.6%), low-grade fever (11.2%), anosmia (2.7%), ageusia (2.5%), headache (9.8%), high-grade fever (8.5%), gastrointestinal symptoms (7.6%), lethargy (6.3%), muscle aches (5.6%), difficulty breathing (5.4%), joint pain (4.7%), and chills (4.7%). 20% of the surveyed patients required treatment at home. Hospitalization and oxygen therapy was required in 3.5% of cases, while only 1.5% demanded intensive care admission. Only one fatality was encountered., Conclusion: COVID-19 infection in pateints with congenital heart disease exhibits a mild to moderate course, and doesn't necessarily increase risk of complicated disease. Pre-pubertal murine models of acute colitis are lacking. Magnetic resonance colonography (MRC) is a promising minimally invasive tool to assess colitis. We aimed to: 1/ Adapt a model of acute experimental colitis to pre-pubertal rats and determine whether MRC characteristics correlate with histological inflammation. 2/ Test this model by administering a diet supplemented in transforming growth factor β2 to reverse inflammation. Twenty-four rats were randomized at weaning to one of 3 groups: Trinitrobenzene Sulfonic Acid (TNBS) group (n = 8) fed a standard diet, that received an intra-rectal 60 mg/kg dose of TNBS-ethanol; Control group (n = 8) fed standard diet, that received a dose of intra-rectal PBS; TNBS+MODULEN group (n = 8) that received a dose of TNBS and were exclusively fed MODULEN-IBD® after induction of colitis. One week after induction of colitis, rats were assessed by MRC, colon histopathology and inflammation markers (Interleukin 1β, Tumor necrosis factor α, Nitric Oxide Synthase 2 and Cyclooxygenase 2). TNBS induced typical features of acute colitis on histopathology and MRC (increased colon wall thickness, increased colon intensity on T2-weighted images, target sign, ulcers). Background: Treatments for childhood cancers have raised the survival rate, however different forms of malignancy continue to cause untimely deaths, and cancer remains a leading cause of death among children. Global research on paediatric cancer is limited for several reasons. Most research has focused on specific methodologies, including questionnaires with heterogeneous samples. In addition, many studies have covered a broad range of cancer diagnoses, and a wide range of children's ages and periods between diagnosis and treatment. These methods are unable to capture the essence of experiences and cultural differences. This study aimed to explore the experience of family carers of children with incurable cancer in occupied Palestinian territory., Methods: The study was conducted in the Paediatric Cancer Department of Beit Jala Hospital, which is the first public cancer department for children in the West Bank. The family carers of children aged 1-18 years with any type of incurable cancer in this hospital were considered eligible for participation, and the individual most involved in the care of the child was selected. To recruit participants, head nurses of medical and surgical paediatric floors provided assistance in approaching the carers of eligible children. The main objectives of the study were then discussed with the family carers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants, and an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach was used to analyse the collected information. Ethical approval was obtained from the Beit Jala Hospital ethical review board and written informed consent was obtained from all participants., Findings: 14 interviews were conducted. Participants were nine mothers, four grandmothers, and one father. Family carers discussed their caring experiences, including their experiences in administering special treatments, their suffering due to treating irritable children, and the information given to them about their children's illness. Family carers reported that they changed the focus of their care from an initial emphasis on normalising their children's lives to relieving their physical and psychological discomfort. This change of focus accompanied changes in carers' understanding of their child's disease over time. As carers became more realistic regarding the future of their children, they attempted to make their lives as comfortable as possible. Finally, carers discussed the support system around them; they found several resources to support them in the care of their children, including the experiences of other parents of children with similar diseases, the hospital environment, and their religious beliefs. Nevertheless, they stated that they needed more support during this difficult time of their lives., Interpretation: There is a need to support parents of children with incurable cancer in the occupied Palestinian territory. Background & Aims: In the last decade, the role of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in eating behavior and anxiety-depressive disorders has gained increasing attention. Although a gut microbiota dysbiosis has been reported in anorectic patients, its pathophysiological role remains poorly understood. Thus, we aimed to characterize the potential role of gut microbiota by evaluating the effects of its depletion in the Activity-Based Anorexia (ABA) mouse model both in male and female mice., Methods: Male and female C57Bl/6 mice were submitted (ABA group) or not (CT group) to the ABA protocol, which combines access to a running wheel with a progressive limited food access. Gut microbiota was previously depleted or not by a cocktail of antibiotics (ATB) delivered by oral gavages. We monitored body composition, anxiety-like behavior, leptin and adiponectin plasma levels, hypothalamic and hippocampal neuropeptides mRNA levels, as well as dopamine (DRD) and serotonin (5HT1 and 4) receptors mRNA expression., Results: In response to the ABA model, the body weight loss was less pronounced in ATB-treated ABA compared to untreated ABA, while food intake remained unaffected by ATB treatment. ATB-treated ABA exhibited increased fat mass and decreased lean mass compared to untreated ABA both in male and female mice, whereas but plasma adipokine concentrations were affected in a sex-dependent manner. Only male ABA mice showed a reduced anticipatory physical activity in response to ATB treatment. Similarly, anxiety-like behavior was mainly affected in ATB-treated ABA male mice compared to ATB-treated ABA female mice, which was associated with male-specific alterations of hypothalamic CRH mRNA and hippocampal DRD and 5-HT1A mRNA levels., Conclusions: Our study provides evidence that ATB-induced gut microbiota depletion triggers alterations of nutritional and behavioral responses to the activity-based anorexia model in a sex-dependent manner., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd and European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. We consider a whispering gallery mode (WGM) sensor where a dielectric perturber extends into the evanescent tail of the microresonator. The position of the perturber rather than the morphology of the resonator is modified by a change in the measured property, inducing a shift in the WGM. This approach can be used for both three-dimensional (spheres, toroids) and planar (disks, rings) resonator geometries. We demonstrate, through analysis and experiments, the feasibility of this sensor approach for both geometries by using a sphere resonator and an on-chip ring resonator. Experiments show that the motion of the perturber across the evanescent tail on the resonator's outer surface leads to a measurable shift in the resonator WGM. In the latter experiment, a ferromagnetic structure is attached to the perturber stem so that the system acts as a magnetic field detector. The results show a consistent relationship between the mode shift and the magnetic field strength.

Background: Optimizing the refeeding of patients with anorexia nervosa remains important to limit somatic complications of malnutrition, as well as to avoid disease relapses by targeting persistent mood and intestinal disorders. We aimed to evaluate the effects of glutamine (Gln) and branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) supplementation during refeeding in activity-based anorectic (ABA) mice., Method: Male C57Bl/6 mice were randomized in control and ABA groups. Once ABA-induced malnutrition was established, mice were progressively refed or not. Refed mice had free access to drinking water supplemented or not with 1% Gln or 2.5% BCAA for 10 days., Results: A progressive refeeding was associated with a partial restoration of body weight and lean mass, while a fat mass rebound was observed. In addition, refeeding restored glucose and leptin. Gln did not affect these parameters, while BCAA tended to increase body weight, fat mass, and glycaemia. In the colon, refeeding improved total protein synthesis and restored the LC3II/LC3I ratio, a marker of autophagy. Gln supplementation enhanced colonic protein synthesis, which was associated with an increased p-p70S6kinase/p70S6kinase ratio, whereas these effects were blunted by BCCA supplementation., Conclusions: In ABA mice, Gln and BCAA supplementations during a progressive refeeding fail to restore body weight and lean mass. However, Gln supplementation improves total colonic protein synthesis conversely to BCAA. Further studies are needed to decipher the underlying mechanisms involved in these opposite results.

Undernutrition is a global health issue leading to 1 out 5 all deaths in children under 5 years. Undernutrition is often associated with environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), a syndrome associated with increased intestinal permeability and gut inflammation. We aimed to develop a novel murine model of undernutrition with these EED features. Post-weaning mice were fed with low-protein diet (LP) alone or combined with a gastrointestinal insult trigger (indomethacin or liposaccharides). Growth, intestinal permeability and inflammation were assessed. LP diet induced stunting and wasting in post-weaning mice but did not impact gut barrier. We therefore combined LP diet with a single administration of indomethacin or liposaccharides (LPS). Indomethacin increased fecal calprotectin production while LPS did not. To amplify indomethacin effects, we investigated its repeated administration in addition to LP diet and mice exhibited stunting and wasting with intestinal hyperpermeability and gut inflammation. The combination of 3-weeks LP diet with repeated oral indomethacin administration induced wasting, stunting and gut barrier dysfunction as observed in undernourished children with EED. As noninvasive methods for investigating gut function in undernourished children are scarce, the present pre-clinical model provides an affordable tool to attempt to elucidate pathophysiological processes involved in EED and to identify novel therapeutic strategies.

Obesity and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are two major public health issues. Interestingly previous data report a marked increase of IBS prevalence in morbid obese subjects compared with non-obese subjects but underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Obesity and IBS share common intestinal pathophysiological mechanisms such as gut dysbiosis, intestinal hyperpermeability and low-grade inflammatory response. We thus aimed to evaluate the link between obesity and IBS using different animal models. Male C57Bl/6 mice received high fat diet (HFD) for 12 weeks and were then submitted to water avoidance stress (WAS). In response to WAS, HFD mice exhibited higher intestinal permeability and plasma corticosterone concentration than non-obese mice. We were not able to reproduce a similar response both in ob/ob mice and in leptin-treated non-obese mice. In addition, metformin, a hypoglycemic agent, limited fasting glycaemia both in unstressed and WAS diet-induced obese mice but only partially restored colonic permeability in unstressed HFD mice. Metformin failed to improve intestinal permeability in WAS HFD mice. Finally, cecal microbiota transplantation from HFD mice in antibiotics-treated recipient mice did not reproduce the effects observed in stressed HFD mice. In conclusion, stress induced a more marked intestinal barrier dysfunction in diet-induced obese mice compared with non-obese mice that seems to be independent of leptin, glycaemia and gut microbiota. : Undernutrition is a major public health problem leading to 1 in 5 of all deaths in children under 5 years. Undernutrition leads to growth stunting and/or wasting and is often associated with environmental enteric dysfunction (EED). EED mechanisms leading to growth failure include intestinal hyperpermeability, villus blunting, malabsorption and gut inflammation. As non-invasive methods for investigating gut function in undernourished children are limited, pre-clinical models are relevant to elucidating the pathophysiological processes involved in undernutrition and EED, and to identifying novel therapeutic strategies. In many published models, undernutrition was induced using protein or micronutrient deficient diets, but these experimental models were not associated with EED. Enteropathy models mainly used gastrointestinal injury triggers. These models are presented in this review. We found only a few studies investigating the combination of undernutrition and enteropathy. This highlights the need for further developments to establish an experimental model reproducing the impact of undernutrition and enteropathy on growth, intestinal hyperpermeability and inflammation, that could be suitable for preclinical evaluation of innovative therapeutic intervention., Competing Interests: E.S., F.B.M. and M.Z. are employed by Nutriset S.A.S.
