The reproductive cycle of the eared horse mussel, Modiolus auriculatus, was followed for one year from February, 2011 to January, 2012 based on 240 individuals collected from Hurghada, north coast of Red Sea, Egypt. The gonadal maturation of M. auriculatus was examined by means of macroscopic and histological preparations of the mantle. Annual cycle with periods of growth, maturity and discharge of gonadic products occurs simultaneously in both sexes. Ripe individuals were observed throughout the year. The largest number of spawning for the individuals occurred from March to June and July for the population. So, it was clear to identify one heavy spawning period for this species. Sexation of M. auriculatus did not differ significantly from 1:1. Sexes were distinguishable in all individuals at the ripe stage with a shell length greater than 3.00 cm. A direct positive correlation was observed between gonad index and water temperature.

A crank-rocker engine is a new invention used to convert oscillating motion from the curve-piston into the rotary motion of the crankshaft. The configuration of this new engine is different from the normal slider-crank engine, so the existing model used to calculate the combustion characteristic is not appropriate for this new engine. A fundamental thermodynamic model of a single curved-cylinder spark-ignition crank-rocker engine is presented. The model was simulated in MATLAB to predict the combustion characteristics at different operating conditions. The friction losses, residual gas fraction and combustion efficiency were introduced into the combustion model to improve the overall accuracy of the model. The developed model was used to analyze and evaluate the in-cylinder pressure, fuel burn rate, and heat release under various crank angle positions. To validate the predictions of the model, experimental tests were conducted on a single-cylinder crank-rocker engine at an engine speed of 2000 rpm, spark timing of 8.60 CA BTDC, full load and wide-open throttle (WOT) condition. Finally, the results were plotted and compared with the simulation results. The findings obtained from the current study have shown the ability of the simulation model to predict the combustion characteristics under different operating conditions. The agreement between the results of the present model and experimental data was reasonably good. This research work proposes a new model which can predict the behavior of the crank-rocker engine. The information gained from this study will aid in the tuning process and future development of this engine.

The MAF family transcription factors are homologs of v-Maf, the oncogenic component of the avian retrovirus AS42. They are subdivided into 2 groups, small and large MAF proteins, according to their structure, function, and molecular size. MAFK is a member of the small MAF family and acts as a dominant negative form of large MAFs. In previous research we generated transgenic mice that overexpress MAFK in order to suppress the function of large MAF proteins in pancreatic β-cells. These mice developed hyperglycemia in adulthood due to impairment of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. The aim of the current study is to examine the effects of β-cell-specific Mafk overexpression in endocrine cell development. The developing islets of Mafk-transgenic embryos appeared to be disorganized with an inversion of total numbers of insulin+ and glucagon+ cells due to reduced β-cell proliferation. Gene expression analysis by quantitative RT-PCR revealed decreased levels of β-cell-related genes whose expressions are known to be controlled by large MAF proteins. Additionally, these changes were accompanied with a significant increase in key β-cell transcription factors likely due to compensatory mechanisms that might have been activated in response to the β-cell loss. Finally, microarray comparison of gene expression profiles between wild-type and transgenic pancreata revealed alteration of some uncharacterized genes including Pcbd1, Fam132a, Cryba2, and Npy, which might play important roles during pancreatic endocrine development. Taken together, these results suggest that Mafk overexpression impairs endocrine development through a regulation of numerous β-cell-related genes. The microarray analysis provided a unique data set of differentially expressed genes that might contribute to a better understanding of the molecular basis that governs the development and function of endocrine pancreas.

Objective: To evaluate the shear bond strength of one-step self-etch adhesives with different co-solvent ingredients to dry or moist dentin. Materials and methods: A total of 60 extracted teeth were used in this study, and were divided according to the adhesive systems and dentin conditions into 6 groups of 10 teeth each [Xeno III – dry dentin, Xeno III – moist dentin, Adper Prompot L-Pop – dry dentin, Adper Prompot L-Pop – moist dentin, iBond – dry dentin, and iBond – moist dentin]. Resin composite cylinder was built up on each specimen, and then thermocycled. A shear load was applied to the specimens using universal testing (Instron machine) at a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/min until failure occurred. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni multiple comparison test at 95% confidence level. Results and conclusion: Based on the findings of this study: The highest mean shear bond strength to dry dentin was seen when Xeno III containing ethanol co-solvent ingredient was used. The highest mean shear bond strength to moist dentin was seen when iBond which contains acetone co-solvent ingredient was used. In the absence of a co-solvent ingredient in self-etch adhesive (Adper Prompot L-Pop), the mean shear bond strengths to dry and moist dentin were low with no significant difference between them. Many Schiff bases were prepared by condensation reaction of certain aromatic amines with aromatic aldehydes derivatives, then the fluorescence properties of these Schiff bases were examined in acidic and basic media. It shows that, these compounds can be used for spectrofluorimetric monitoring of small pH changes.

Viruses possessing a non-segmented genome require a specific recognition of their nucleic acid to ensure its protection in a capsid. A similar feature exists for viruses having a segmented genome, usually consisting of viral genomic segments joined together into one viral entity. While this appears as a rule for animal viruses, the majority of segmented plant viruses package their genomic segments individually. To ensure a productive infection, all viral particles and thereby all segments have to be present in the same cell. Progression of the virus within the plant requires as well a concerted genome preservation to avoid loss of function. In this review, we will discuss the “life aspects” of chosen phytoviruses and argue for the existence of RNA-RNA interactions that drive the preservation of viral genome integrity while the virus progresses in the plant.

The surface modification of minerals by bacteria has recently been examined in an attempt to improve their separation selectivities. In this paper, a study of the effect of Corynebacterium diphtheriae intermedius (CDI) bacteria on the dolomite/apatite separation process is reported. Bacterial interaction with both minerals was investigated employing Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy together with measurements of the adsorption isotherm and the zeta potential. FT-IR methods were used to identify the functional groups on the surface of each mineral before and after the adsorption of bacteria, while the adsorption isotherm and the zeta potential were used to illustrate the type of adsorption process involved, i.e. physical versus chemical adsorption. The application of bioflotation processes to natural ores using CDI bacteria can lower the MgO content of the ores to less than 1%.

A significant fraction of a plant's nuclear genome encodes chloroplast-targeted proteins, many of which are devoted to the assembly and function of the photosynthetic apparatus. Using digital video imaging of chlorophyll fluorescence, we isolated proton gradient regulation 7 (pgr7) as an Arabidopsis thaliana mutant with low nonphotochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (NPQ). In pgr7, the xanthophyll cycle and the PSBS gene product, previously identified NPQ factors, were still functional, but the efficiency of photosynthetic electron transport was lower than in the wild type. The pgr7 mutant was also smaller in size and had lower chlorophyll content than the wild type in optimal growth conditions. Positional cloning located the pgr7 mutation in the At3g21200 (PGR7) gene, which was predicted to encode a chloroplast protein of unknown function. Chloroplast targeting of PGR7 was confirmed by transient expression of a GFP fusion protein and by stable expression and subcellular localization of an epitope-tagged version of PGR7. Bioinformatic analyses revealed that the PGR7 protein has two domains that are conserved in plants, algae, and bacteria, and the N-terminal domain is predicted to bind a cofactor such as FMN. Thus, we identified PGR7 as a novel, conserved nuclear gene that is necessary for efficient photosynthetic electron transport in chloroplasts of Arabidopsis.

This study involved the synthesis of the UiO-67 metal-organic framework; UiO-67 is a well-known type of MOF obtained by coordinating the Zr6O4(OH)4 metal unit with the 4,42-biphenyldicarboxylate organic linker, using the hydrothermal technique. The novelty of the current work is to synthesize UiO-67 MOFs, and their application as biological agents for antibacterial and cancer cells. Subsequently, the composite material UiO-67 was subjected to a comprehensive characterization process involving Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA) and surface area analysis, and the results showed the successful synthesis of the UiO-67 MOFs, with a high specific surface area of 1415 m2/g. Thesynthesized UiO-67 for its antibacterial properties tested against five pathogenic bacterial strains, which include three gram-positive and mcillin-resistant pairs including MRSA, S. aureus and Enterococcus faecalis, and Two gram-negative bacteria E. colli and S. typhimurium using the agar well diffusion method. These findings have shown enhanced, strong antibacterial activity against all the five used gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains. Furthermore, the anticancer efficacy of UiO-67 was evaluated on two distinct types of cancer cells: We are using MCF-7 (human breast cancer cell line) and HepG2 (human liver cancer cells). The experiments prove that UiO-67 has the potential of cytotoxicity against both Glioblastoma and H460 cancer lines with the ability to inhibit apoptosis at the same time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
