Abstract

Typesetting industry is still the primary instrument of communication, despite the development of new technological systems. This study focuses on the analysis of the hepatic effects induced by the use of some organic solvents employed in the printing industry.We studied a group of 194 workers: 93 exposed and 101 not exposed. The level of the exposure to chemical pollutants were assessed through the environmental monitoring of blood concentrations and the analysis of airborne substances. The health survey was performed through the collection of the medical history and the use of hepatic tests, which were evaluated by calculating Mean, Standard Deviation, Student's t-test and X² test with Yates Correction, to investigate statistically significant differences in some hepatic parameters: AST, ALT, ALP, GGT, fractional and total bilirubin. The environmental data sometimes exceeded the TLV-TWA.The clinical evaluation of the hepatic parameters showed statistically significant differences as to the hematic concentrations of AST, ALT, GGT.The results we obtained support the hypothesis of a risk among the printing industrial workers attributable to the hepatotoxic solvents. This risk seems to be related to the use of a mixture of solvents, although at low doses, and the analysis of the results obtained confirms the validity of the investigation for the health screening protocol adopted in order to identify subjects and/or population at risk of hepatotoxicity.

Abstract

Background: Statins, due to their well-established pleiotropic effects, have noteworthy benefits in stroke prevention. Despite this, a significant proportion of high-risk patients still do not receive the recommended therapeutic regimens, and many others discontinue treatment after being started on them. The causes of non-adherence to current guidelines are multifactorial, and depend on both physicians and patients. The aim of this study is to identify the factors influencing statin prescription at Stroke Unit (SU) discharge.Methods: This study included 12,750 patients enrolled on the web-based Lombardia Stroke Registry (LRS) from July 2009 to April 2012 and discharged alive, with a diagnosis of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) and without contra-indication to statin therapy. By logistic regression analysis and classification trees, we evaluated the impact of demographic data, risk factors, tPA treatment, in-hospital procedures and complications on statin prescription rate at discharge.Results: We observed a slight increase in statins prescription during the study period (from 39.1 to 43.9%). Lower age, lower stroke severity and prestroke disability, the presence of atherothrombotic/lacunar risk factors, a diagnosis of non-cardioembolic stroke, tPA treatment, the absence of in-hospital complications, with the sole exception of hypertensive fits and hyperglycemia, were the patient-related predictors of adherence to guidelines by physicians. Overall, dyslipidemia appears as the leading factor, while TOAST classification does not reach statistical significance.Conclusions: In our region, Lombardia, adherence to guidelines in statin prescription at Stroke Unit discharge is very different from international goals. The presence of dyslipidemia remains the main factor influencing statin prescription, while the presence of well-defined atherosclerotic etiopathogenesis of stroke does not enhance statin prescription. Some uncertainties about the risk/benefit of statin therapy in stroke etiology subtypes (cardioembolism, other or undetermined causes) may partially justify the underuse of statin in ischemic stroke. The differences that exist between current international guidelines may prevent a more widespread use of statin and should be clarified in a consensus. © 2014 Canavero et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd

Abstract

The comprehension of the molecular mechanisms involved in the physiology of human cells and in the pathogenesis of complex disorders, requires the development of new bioinformatic and biostatistic approaches able to integrate and interpret the huge amount of data derived from different kind of "omics" technologies. Nowadays, the interpretation of the transcriptional state of the cell and its alterations in particular experimental or pathological conditions is of particular interest. To this aim several technologies have been developed to identify and quantify the entire set of cellular transcripts, thus resulting in the availability of expression profiles of many different cell types in many different conditions. With the aim of contributing to the elucidation of transcriptional dynamics in the cell, we developed CorrelaGenes, a new bioinformatic tool that exploits the expression data available in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/ (Last accessed on Sep 26, 2012). The main goal of this tool is to help identifying sets of genes whose expression appeared simultaneously altered in different experiments, thus suggesting co-regulation or coordinated action in the same biological process.

Nella seconda parte sono analizzate 600 opere architettoniche (simbolicamente una per anno) per ciascuna delle quali viene fornita anche una breve bibliografia. Ad A. Buccaro si deve il capitolo "Ottocento" e le relative schede di lettura di architetture significative (pp. 505-645), oltre alla generale impostazione della monografia insieme con gli altri autori. Ad Alessandro Castagnaro si deve il capitolo "Cinquecento"e le relative schede di lettura di architetture significative e le tavole sinottiche (pp. 98-243) per un totale di 146 pagine.

Abstract

En la actualidad, las bases de datos clínicas contienen un gran volumen de información temporal que no está siendo suficientemente aprovechada y puede resultar fundamental para el óptimo cuidado de los pacientes. En este trabajo se describe un nuevo algoritmo que permite la asociación temporal del comportamiento de las variables que describen la evolución de los pacientes y la posterior obtención de reglas de interés clínico. Dicho interés es evaluado mediante el uso de diferentes métricas de demostrada utilidad en la extracción de conocimiento en bases de datos clínicas. Se presentan además los resultados obtenidos al aplicar este algoritmo a datos clínicos de pacientes con VIH/SIDA con objeto de detectar patrones de comportamiento de las variables que dan lugar a un fallo del tratamiento antirretroviral.

Abstract

Experimental Trichinella zimbabwensis infections were established in three baboons (Papio sp.) and four vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) and the clinical-pathological manifestations assessed. The infected animals showed clinical signs ranging from fever, diarrhoea, periorbital oedema and muscular pain in varying degrees. One baboon became blind due to the infection. Levels of creatinine phosphokinase and lactate dehydrogenase increased to reach a peak on Day 42 post-infection (pi) for both baboons and monkeys. Blood parameters such as packed cell volume, levels of red blood cells and white blood cells did not change significantly from the normal ranges except for the levels of eosinophils which peaked above the normal ranges at Day 28 and 56 pi in baboons and at Day 56 pi in monkeys. Two baboons and two monkeys died during the course of the experiment. They were emaciated and showed lesions such as ascites, hydropericardium, congested liver and enlarged gall bladder. Histopathological findings of various muscles included a basophilic transformation of muscle cells, the disappearance of sarcomere myofibrils and basophilic sarcoplasm with the presence of Trichinella larvae in the sarcoplasm. These changes were mainly in the massetter and were of various intensities in the tail, gastrocnemius and biceps muscles. Five consecutive treatments with an oxfendazole-levamisole combination on surviving animals failed to clear the infection whereas ivermectin cleared the infection after one treatment in two monkeys and after two treatments in a baboon.
