Abstract

The paper presents an original interactive on-line tutorial for Engineering Graphics and Design. The tutorial was developed in response to the great need of help for students in engineering graphics. Learning materials and resources are essential components in all learning systems. By the time of this writing, the system is not fully operational yet. Abstract

The article focuses on engineering graphic courses taught at technical universities in Romania and abroad. Some specific changes at POLITEHNICA University in Bucharest (PUB) are outlined including reducing the status of Descriptive Geometry. The main objective of the master program in Engineering Graphics and Design is cited. Also noted is the significant role of graphics in engineering as well as in the context of information society.

Abstract

The concave polyhedral surface of CC II can be used as a structural template for architectural design of domes, roofs or other covering or stand-alone structures. Subdivision of CC II faces in geometrically defined way can be observed as a part of the design process, if done with the intention to contribute to the aesthetic quality of the building itself. In this paper we discuss certain interventions on the tiled triangular faces of the CC II by regular triangles and hexagons, in order to get patterns applicable in architecture. By using different colors and / or materials of the tiles, we can get solutions that add the decorative layer to the structural one. Examining various solutions, this research focused on the D subdivision of the lateral polyhedral triangle (LPT) and in the resulting uniform tilings, searching for the ways to overcome monotony of highly symmetrical patterns. As opposed to exploring the ways of assembling the tiled LPTs with assigned layouts of tiles into shape of the CC II in order to get desired patterns on its surface, this paper explores the creation of various patterns within the existing, formerly obtained uniform tilings (2-uniform, trihexagonal tiling). A couple of conceptual solutions are given, as an illustration of the idea. Abstract

Concave pyramids of second sort (CP II) are formed similarly to concave cupolae of second sort (CC II) with a comparable logic of emergence to the regular-faced convex pyramids. They are formed by enclosing the space over a regular polygonal base by the lateral deltahedral wrapper consisting of equilateral triangles meeting in common apex. The plane net is composed of double row of equilateral triangles, so it is possible to form a regular faced pyramid even with bases greater than pentagonal, whereat the obtained polyhedron will be concave. In this paper we focus on a type of concave pyramids of second sort formed over the basic polygons with an even number of sides, type CP II-B which has half the number of lateral unit cells than the type CP II-A.
