Abstract

We propose a method to distinguish between trivial and topological, Majorana, zero-energy states in both short and long superconductor-normal-superconductor junctions based on Rashba nanowires using phase-biased equilibrium transport measurements. In particular, we show how the sawtooth profile of the supercurrent, due to the Majorana oscillation suppression in the topological phase for sufficiently long superconductor regions, leads to a strong signal in its zero-frequency susceptibility for a phase difference of $\phi=\pi$. This signal is notably insensitive to the chemical potential in the normal region, while trivial zero-energy states only causes signals in the susceptibility that is highly varying with the chemical potential, thus turning gating of the normal region into a simple experimental control knob. Furthermore, we obtain that, by tuning the junction transparency, critical currents in both short and long junctions undergo a reduction in the number of oscillations as a function of magnetic field only in the topological phase, an effect that find to be intimately linked to Majorana non-locality. Finally, we show that our results also hold at finite temperatures, thus highlighting their potential measurability under realistic experimental conditions., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

Parafermion bound states (PBSs) are generalizations of Majorana bound states (MBSs) and have been predicted to exist as zero-energy eigenstates in proximitized fractional quantum Hall edge states. Similarly to MBSs, a finite distance between the PBS can split the ground state degeneracy. However, parafermionic modes have a richer exchange statistics than MBSs, so several interaction terms are allowed by the underlying $\mathbb{Z}_{2n}$ symmetry, rendering the effective Hamiltonian governing a pair of PBSs at a finite distance nontrivial. Here, we use a combination of analytical techniques (semiclassical instanton approximation) and numerical techniques (quantum Monte Carlo simulations) to determine the effective coupling Hamiltonian. For this purpose, we go beyond the dilute one-instanton gas approximation and show how finite-size effects can give rise to higher-order parafermion interactions. We find excellent agreement between the analytical results and Monte Carlo simulations. We estimate that these finite-size corrections should be observable in some of the recently proposed experiments to observe PBSs in strongly correlated systems., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon (CdGM) states are localized states with a discrete energy spectrum bound to the core of vortices in superconductors. In topological superconductors, CdGM states are predicted to coexist with zero-energy, chargeless states widely known as Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Due to their energy difference, current experiments rely on scanning tunneling spectroscopy methods to distinguish between them. This work shows that electrostatic inhomogeneities can push trivial CdGM states arbitrarily close to zero energy in non-topological systems where no MZM is present. Furthermore, the BCS charge of CdGM states is suppressed under the same mechanism. Through exploration of the impurity parameter space, we establish that these two phenomena generally happen in consonance. Our results show that energy and charge shifts in CdGM may be enough to imitate the spectroscopic signatures of MZMs even in cases where the estimated CdGM level spacing (in the absence of impurities) is much larger than the typical experimental level broadening., Comment: Revised and expanded version. 8 pages, 5 figures

78. Exploring the Relationship between Socioemotional Skills and Decision-Making Styles in Health Students

Abstract

Higher education in health study programs is particularly focused on the development of technical skills, despite there being a consensus on the importance of training students regarding socioemotional and life skills. The aim of this study was to characterize and explore correlations between socioemotional skills and decision-making styles in undergraduate health students. Undergraduate students (18-25 years old) were recruited at a School of Health Sciences in Portugal. Participants were characterized in terms of sociodemographic data, socioemotional skills (Study on Social and Emotional Skills questionnaire) and decision-making styles (Melbourne Decision Making questionnaire). Descriptive statistics and correlations between questionnaires´ subscales were calculated. Students presented higher scores in tolerance (34.8±3.4), cooperation (34.7±2.4), empathy (31.1±3.2), vigilance (16.0±1.9), and procrastination (9.9±2.1). Assertiveness presented negative correlations with buck-passing ("rho"=-0.43, p<0.01) and procrastination ("rho"=-0.38, p<0.01) and positive correlation with vigilance ("rho"=0.22, p=0.03). Students demonstrated higher values in empathy, cooperation, and tolerance skills, meaning they tend to be kind and care for others' well-being. Vigilance style is related to assertiveness characterizing hard working leaders able to pay attention to others' needs. Training that involves socioemotional skills might be crucial for the style of decision-making in future health professionals.

Abstract

Introduction: Physical activity and exercise are protective factors for physical and cognitive decline in older adults, but recent studies reveal that a large percentage of this population do not practice exercise at the levels recommended by international guidelines. The frequency, intensity, type, time, volume, and progression (FITT-VP) principles are a widely used method for prescribing physical exercise, allowing the development of a personalized exercise program that meets the needs of each individual. Objectives: This masterclass is intended to serve as a professional application tool for physical therapists who prescribe physical exercise for older adults. We present a section for each FITT-VP principle to facilitate handling these principles individually when prescribing exercise for this population. Methods: Review of the scientific literature and international guidelines on the prescription of physical exercises for older adults. Results: Aerobic, mobility, resistance, balance, and flexibility exercises, as well as functional training, should be included in an exercise program for older adults, which should be progressed using different methods for each of the exercise modalities. Conclusions: An exercise program for older adults should integrate different exercise modalities. Exercise progression should be performed following the FITT-VP principles and some specific progression factors recommended for each exercise modality. Significance: Considering the challenge faced by clinicians in designing a viable exercise program for older adults that responds to international recommendations, with this masterclass we hope to help physical therapists to plan an exercise program that is feasible and at the same time, responds to the expected needs of this population. Abstract

Purpose: To characterize the time structure of K1 kickboxing matches of Glory World Series (Glory) and to determine potential differences between winners and losers. Methods: Seventeen matches of Glory 2019 (17 first rounds, 13 second rounds, and 8 third rounds) were video-analyzed to quantify (1) the time expended in high- and low-intensity activity and pauses, (2) the number and pattern of attacks, and (3) the number of effective attacks. Fighters were professional male athletes (age 27.9 [2.7] y) of the middle-weight category (85 kg). The number and the pattern of attacks and the number of effective attacks were compared between winners and losers. Results: The mean times expended in high- and low-intensity activity and pauses were 234.6 (133.9) seconds, 97.4 (60.1) seconds, and 36.0 (19.9) seconds, respectively, resulting in an effort-to-pause ratio of ∼1.8:1. Compared with losers, winners presented (1) a greater number of attacks in the second round (P =.004) and entire match (P =.009), (2) a greater number of attacks containing 3 attacks in sequence in the second round (P =.001) and attacks containing >3 attacks in the third round (P =.049), and (3) a greater number of effective attacks in the second round (P =.011) and entire match (P =.008). Conclusions: The findings of the present study indicate that K1 kickboxing in Glory matches presents a ∼1.8:1 effort-to-pause ratio and that winners perform more attacks, effective attacks, and attacks in sequence. Abstract

Parafermions modes are non-Abelian anyons which were introduced as $\mathbb{Z}_N$ generalizations of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Majorana states. In particular, $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions can be used to produce Fibonacci anyons, laying a path towards universal topological quantum computation. Due to their fractional nature, much of theoretical work on $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions has relied on bosonization methods or parafermionic quasi-particles. In this work, we introduce a representation of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions in terms of purely fermionic models operators in the t-J regime. We establish the equivalency of a family of lattice fermionic models written in the $t-J$ model basis with a Kitaev-like chain supporting free $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermonic modes at its ends. By using density matrix renormalization group calculations, we are able to characterize the topological phase transition and study the effect of local operators (doping and magnetic fields) on the spatial localization of the parafermionic modes and their stability.
