This paper describes BiographyNet, a digital humanities project (2012-2016) that brings together researchers from history, computational linguistics and computer science. The project uses data from the Biography Portal of the Netherlands (BPN), which contains approximately 125,000 biographies from a variety of Dutch biographical dictionaries from the eighteenth century until now, describing around 76,000 individuals. BiographyNet's aim is to strengthen the value of the portal and comparable biographical datasets for historical research, by improving the search options and the presentation of its outcome, with a historically justified NLP pipeline that works through a user evaluated demonstrator. The project's main target group are professional historians. The project therefore worked with two key concepts: "provenance" -understood as a term allowing for both historical source criticism and for references to data-management and programming interventions in digitized sources; and "perspective" interpreted as inherent uncertainty concerning the interpretation of historical results.

It is possible to automatically annotate a natural science spreadsheet using lexical matching, given that the tables in these spreadsheets meet a number of requirements regarding the content. Results of a survey show that most of the existing natural science spreadsheets deviate from the ideal situation. We propose to complement lexical matching with both heuristics and knowledge from external vocabularies to overcome these deviations.

Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) provides a data model and vocabulary for expressing Knowledge Organization Systems (KOSs) such as thesauri and classification schemes in Semantic Web applications. This paper presents the main components of SKOS and their formal expression in Web Ontology Language (OWL), providing an extensive account of the design decisions taken by the Semantic Web Deployment (SWD) Working Group of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which between 2006 and 2009 brought SKOS to the status of W3C Recommendation. The paper explains key design principles such as "minimal ontological commitment" and systematically cites the requirements and issues that influenced the design of SKOS components. By reconstructing the discussion around alternative features and design options and presenting the rationale for design decisions, the paper aims at providing insight into how SKOS turned out as it did, and why. Assuming that SKOS, like any other successful technology, may eventually be subject to revision and improvement, the critical account offered here may help future editors approach such a task with deeper understanding., Submitted to Journal of Web Semantics, 2012-02-05

In this paper we present a system that generates questions from an ontology to determine a crisis situation by ordinary people using their mobile phone: the Situation Awareness Question Generator. To generate questions from an ontology we propose a formalization based on Situation Theory and several strategies to determine a situation as quickly as possible. A suitable ontology should comply with human categorization to enhance trustworthiness. We created three ontologies, i.e. a pragmatic-based ontology, an expert-based ontology and a basiclevel ontology. Several experiments, published elsewhere, showed that the basic-level ontology is most suitable.

The growing number of cultural heritage collections published as Linked Data has given rise to a vast source of collection objects to explore. To provide an experience which goes beyond traditional search, the links from objects to terms from structured vocabularies can be used to create new paths to explore. We present INVENiT, a semantic search system which leverages these paths for result diversification and clustering. Users can freely explore the collection, but are also able to contribute their knowledge by annotating collection objects. The added information is directly incorporated in the search results. In this paper we present an experiment which has been performed to validate a pragmatic-based, expert-based and basic-level ontology. These ontologies were created for use in an application which generates questions for ordinary people with the purpose to determine a crisis situation. All three ontologies have specific characteristics related to their method of creation. This experiment shows that using the basic-level ontology results in the fastest and least ambiguous determination of a crisis situation.

Diversity and profundity of the topics in cultural heritage collections make experts from outside the institution indispensable for acquiring qualitative and comprehensive annotations. We define the concept of nichesourcing and present challenges in the process of obtaining qualitative annotations from people in these niches. We believe that experts provide better annotations if this process is personalized. We present a framework called Accurator, that allows to realize and evaluate strategies and applications for personalized nichesourcing.

In this document we describe the Amsterdam Museum Linked Open Data set. The dataset is a five-star Linked Data representation and comprises the entire collection of the Amsterdam Museum consisting of more than 70,000 object descriptions. Furthermore, the institution's thesaurus and person authority files used in the object metadata are included in the Linked Data set. The data is mapped to the Europeana Data Model, utilizing Dublin Core, SKOS, RDA-group2 elements and the OAI-ORE model to represent the museum data. Vocabulary concepts are mapped to GeoNames and DBpedia. The two main contributions of this dataset are the inclusion of internal vocabularies and the fact that the complexity of the original dataset is retained.

In this paper we build on our methodology for combining and selecting alignment techniques for vocabularies, with two alignment case studies of large vocabularies in two languages. Firstly, we analyze the vocabularies and based on that analysis choose our alignment techniques. Secondly, we test our hypothesis based on earlier work that first generating alignments using simple lexical alignment techniques, followed by a separate disambiguation of alignments performs best in terms of precision and recall. The experimental results show, for example, that this combination of techniques provides an estimated precision of 0.7 for a sample of the 12,725 concepts for which alignments were generated (of the total 27,992 concepts). Thirdly, we explain our results in light of the characteristics of the vocabularies and discuss their impact on the alignments techniques.

Semantic descriptions of non-textual media available on the web can be used to facilitate retrieval and presentation of media assets and documents containing them. While technologies for multimedia semantic descriptions already exist, there is as yet no formal description of a high quality multimedia ontology that is compatible with existing (semantic) web technologies. We explain the complexity of the problem using an annotation scenario. We then derive a number of requirements for specifying a formal multimedia ontology before we present the developed ontology, COMM, and evaluate it with respect to our requirements. We provide an API for generating multimedia annotations that conform to COMM.

Current information retrieval (IR) approaches do not formally capture the explicit meaning of a keyword query but provide a comfortable way for the user to specify information needs on the basis of keywords. Ontology-based approaches allow for sophisticated semantic search but impose a query syntax more difficult to handle. In this paper, we present an approach for translating keyword queries to DL conjunctive queries using background knowledge available in ontologies. We present an implementation which shows that this interpretation of keywords can then be used for both exploration of asserted knowledge and for a semantics-based declarative query answering process. We also present an evaluation of our system and a discussion of the limitations of the approach with respect to our underlying assumptions which directly points to issues for future work.

Multimedia in all forms (images, video, graphics, music, speech) is exploding on the Web. The content needs to be annotated and indexed to enable effective search and retrieval. However, recent standards and best practices for multimedia metadata don't provide semantically rich descriptions of multimedia content. On the other hand, the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C's) Semantic Web effort has been making great progress in advancing techniques for annotating semantics of Web resources. To bridge this gap, a new W3C task force has been created to investigate multimedia annotations on the Semantic Web. This article examines the problems of semantically annotating multimedia and describes the integration of multimedia metadata with the Semantic Web. (Editor's note by John R. Smith).
