Different methods for the preparation of Ge(IV)‐containing title compounds such as (III) and (VII) are described.

(I) reacts in an exothermic reaction with the aldehyde (II) to give the heterocyclic expansion product (III), which decomposes thermally to afford germylated heterocycles (IV)‐(VI) and 1,2‐diphenylethylene.

The mesitylgermane (I) is chlorinated with NCS to produce a mixture of the chlorogermanes (II) ‐ (IV).

The dehydrofluorination of (I) leads to the stable and highly air‐sensitive germene (III), which can be isolated in part quantitatively as the adducts (IV) which exhibit thermochromism between ‐100 and 85 °C. Protic reagents such as H2O, MeOH, LiAlH4, or dimethyl disulfide add quantitatively to the double bond of (IVa) to give products such as (Va) or (Vb).

The triarylgermaphosphene (I) is subjected to thermolysis, yielding the benzogermaphosphetene (II).

1,3‐Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzene (I) is lithiated and subsequently treated with phosphorus trichloride (II) to yield the aryldichlorophosphine (III).

The germylamine (II) is treated with the o‐quinone (I) mentioned in the title.

The compound (III), thermally very stable, is converted into (IV) (P1, Z=4) by heating in a sealed tube.

The title complex (IIIb) is prepared analogously to (IIIa) at 110 °C with 80% yield.

The stannaphosphene (I) is treated with the nucleophiles (II) to yield the adducts (III).

Tetramethylgermane (I) is converted to the chloro compound (II) which is reduced with lithium amalgam to give the digermane (III).

Difluorogermylene (Ia) reacts with 3,5‐di‐tert‐butyl‐o‐quinone (II) in THF to form the 1,3,2‐dioxagermole (IIIa).

Germaphosphene (I) is very reactive toward the compounds (II) with active hydrogens to give the sec. phosphines (III) with high regiospecificity.

Two methods of preparing the dibisyldiphosphene (V) are investigated as shown in the reaction scheme.

Preparation modes for the title compounds of type (I) are described.

The general synthetic method does not lead to dioxaphosphagermatanes such as (III), only the corresponding dimer (IVa) is isolated.

A new route for the preparation of the title compounds (III) is presented.

Studies on ring opening of (I) in cycloaddition reactions with the nitrones (II), catalyzed by Lewis bases (HMPA) or Lewis acids (ZnCl2; M(CO)6; M(CO)5(THF), M: Cr, W) show that (Ia) is much less reactive than (Ib).

The photoreaction of the chlorogermanes (I) with acetylene (II) yields the vinylchlorogermanes (III) which add (I) to form the bis(chlorogermyl)ethanes (IV).

The stability of the new compounds (III) depends on Ar and the solvent.

Germylated heterocyclic compounds such as (I), (IV), and (VII) react with dihalides such as phenyldichlorophosphine (II), thiophosgene (V), and phenyldichloroarsine (VIII) with exchange of the germanium atom to yield the corresponding heterocyclic derivatives as outlined in the reaction scheme.

Since the isolation of the first stable diphosphene by YOSHIFUJI, some other diphosphenes have been prepared and stabilized by very bulky substituents. We have recently described the synthesis, via a germylated way, of the bis [bis (trimethylsilyl)methyl]diphosphene 1, one of the least crowded stable diphosphenes:

The germanium heterocycles (III) are prepared by reaction of the Grignard compound, derived from the dichloride (I), with elemental sulfur (II).

The ortho‐benzoquinone (I) reacts with triethyl‐ or triphenylgermane (II) to produce the germylcatechols (III), together with the benzodioxagermols (IV).
