In this paper, the fact that poor people, and specifically poor children, are a problem for our society was discussed. The eradication of poverty is a goal that our nation has not been able to achieve and probably will not reach in the foreseeable future. Data that are supportive of links between poverty and increased needs for dental treatment and difficulty in the acquisition of professional dental care for children were reviewed. Finally, it was pointed out that social consequences surrounding the environments of poor children and, in some instances, the manner in which these children are reared, are predictive of misbehavior at dental appointments, particularly in younger age-groups. Such misbehavior paired with the finding that these children often do need restorative and surgical care may present challenges in patient management. The most important conclusion of this paper is that the dentist must be sensitive to the problems of poor children, responsive to their psychological needs, and prepared to give the extra energy and time that may be needed in management before and during the dental appointment.

Fluoride supplements for Indiana children are necessary for caries reduction where communal and well water tests show deficient levels of fluoride. The role of the physician in providing optimum preventive dental care to young patients is discussed. Also, the proper dental protocol for fluoride supplements is provided.

Deficiencies have been identified in dentists' knowledge about and use of proper protocol in systemic fluoride supplementation and water fluoride assay. Although AADS curriculum guidelines include systemic fluoride supplementation, little is known about actual predoctoral dental and dental hygiene curricula in this area. This study used a mail survey format to investigate dental and dental hygiene curricula concerning systemic fluoride supplementation. The majority of pertinent topics were reported to be included in most program curricula. However, the majority of programs reported no opportunities for students to apply the lecture material presented. Clinical evaluation of the fluoride supplement needs of all child patients is recommended. Student experience should be enhanced by the use of simulated experiences, especially in urban dental and dental hygiene programs. The dentist/dental hygienist team approach should be encouraged.

This 1984 survey focuses on the use of systemic fluoride supplements by North Carolina dentists. Respondents included all the state's pediatric dentists and general practitioners who assay water supplies before prescribing fluoride supplements, and other randomly selected general practitioners who treat children. As approximately 50 percent of the U.S. population does not have access to optimally fluoridated water, systemic fluoride supplements should be considered as an alternative. Faculty reported being very well informed about proper fluoride supplement protocol, whereas some practitioners were somewhat or well-informed.

The effects of physical health status, attitude toward retirement, and social class on temporal experience were studied in 70 male Ss, aged 52--74. A semistructured interview was utilized, and a content analysis by independent raters was performed on the resulting interview material. In general, it was found that chronic illness had a differential effect on experience, depending upon social class, for certain temporal variables. Among the healthy retirees it was also found that willingness to retire interacted with social class, and that blue collar workers who had resisted retirement resembled the chronically ill in terms of affect and temporal experience. The possibility for adjustment in retirement was linked to variations in temporal experience, and implications were drawn for preretirement intervention with specific social class target populations. Finally, psychological and behavioral consequences of variations in temporal experience were discussed, and the possibility of developing methods of altering temporal experience as a means of helping the elderly to adjust to life transitions was explored.

The findings presented here provide support for the validity of the Children's Oral Health Status Index. The COHSI is a good predictor of dentists' ranking of the oral health of pairs of children when there are at least ten points difference between the scores.

The frequencies, patterns, and results of 1,900 patient drinking water assays for fluoride content requested in a six-month period by North Carolina health professionals were determined. Twelve per cent of the samples warranted adjustment from the full dosage fluoride supplement. Less than 3 per cent of physicians and 8 per cent of dentists submitted samples. Water supplies should be tested before a systemic fluoride supplement is prescribed. Either few dentists and physicians in North Carolina test water before prescribing supplements or few prescribe them at all.

Although findings from recent animal studies suggest that behavioral factors such as "helplessness" play a role in cancer progression, very few such studies with humans have been carried out. The study investigated the predictive power of an immunologic effector cell, the natural killer (NK) cell, as well as selected psychological and demographic factors, to breast cancer prognostic risk status. It was found that NK activity predicted the status of cancer spread to the axillary lymph nodes. Patients who had low levels of NK activity were rated as well-adjusted to their illness; patients who had higher NK activity appeared to be distressed or maladjusted. These findings are discussed in the light of recent animal findings linking environmental stress and behavioral responsiveness to biological vulnerability via endocrine and immune pathways.

We have shown that the absorption of tetraphenylborate into black lipid membranes formed from either bacterial phosphatidylethanolamine or glycerolmonooleate produces concentration-dependent changes in the electrostatic potential between the membrane interior and the bulk aqueous phases. These potential changes were studied by a variety of techniques: voltage clamp, charge pulse, and "probe" measurements on black lipid membranes; electrophroetic mobility measurements on phospholipid vesicles; and surface potential measurements on phospholipid monolayers. The magnitude of the potential changes indicates that tetraphenylborate absorbs into a region of the membrane with a low dielectric constant, where it produces substantial boundary potentials, as first suggested by Markin et al. (1971). Many features of our data can be explained by a simple three-capacitor model, which we develop in a self-consistent manner. Some discrepancies between our data and the simple model suggest that discrete charge phenomena may be important within these thin membranes.
