Mayurbhanj Chemical Laboratory, Ravenshaw College, Cuttaok-753 003 Manuscript received 3 February 1978, revised 28 August 1978, accepted 3 November 1978 A series of 5-aryl-1,2-dithioles and 5-phenyl-3-hydroxythiophenes have been synthesised and assayed for fungicidal and insecticidal activities against the fungus \(Pyricularia\) \(oryzae\) (Cav.) and the insect \(Nephotettix\) \(impicticeps\). Majority of these compounds are found to possess appreciable fungicidal and insecticidal activities.

In a prospective study hyponatremia was observed in 30 per cent of 100 elderly hospital in-patients, the serum sodium ranging from 106 to 129 mmol/l. In 67 per cent of the subjects symptoms were absent or non-specific, and the remainder had symptoms of altered sensorium without any focal neurological deficit. Hyponatremia was iatrogenic in 30 per cent, while 17 per cent had an underlying bacterial chest infection. Removal of the cause rapidly reversed hyponatremia and the relevant symptoms. It is stressed that early detection and reversal of this abnormality would significantly limit morbidity in the elderly.

In the field of emulsion polymerization, it is well known that the nature of the process (batch, semi-continuous, or continuous methods) can affect the kinetic behavior (rate of polymerization) or some polymer latex properties (number and size of particles, particle size distribution), and molecular weight development.1−2 In the particular case of emulsion copolymerization the homogeneity of the copolymer composition is also found to be controlled by the process.4 In fact, a copolymer composition-drift generally prevails, due to change in the composition of the monomeric mixture versus conversion, as a result of differences in reactivity ratios and/or water solubility between the two monomers. Obviously, the compositional homogeneity of the copolymer products determines their molecular properties and consequently their physical and mechanical behavior.

The first case of orbital paecilomycosis is described. Fungal hyphae were found in a KOH preparation of the granulomatous tissue, removed from the orbit, and also in histological sections. Culture of the tissue was positive for fungus which was resistant to cycloheximide (0.5 g/l). It was identified as Paecilomyces lilacinus (Thom) Samson (IMI 213487) and shown to be pathogenic for the rabbit cornea.

Synthesis of a number of 2-aryl-1, 3-bi-2'-quinolylpropanes, piperidino-, and morpholino-ethylquinolines as well as their reduction products as possible antiamoebic agents is described.

SUMMARY Methaqualone, a non-barbiturate hypnotic, was used as the sole anaesthetic for short surgical procedures in 27 patients. In a further 13 it was, in addition, injected intermittently during nitrous oxide anaesthesia for longer operations. Rapid loss of consciousness followed intravenous injection of adequate doses. Transient generalized muscle spasm followed theonset of sleep, after which there was muscle relaxation. Recovery was uneventful and after a single dose consciousness began to return in 10–15 minutes.

Osteoclastoma involves the long bones of the extremities and some of the flat bones such as the sacrum, mandible patella and vertebrae. Eggston and Wolff (1947) mentioned the possibility of its origin from bones of the upper jaw, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. Amongst the skull bones, Rosenwasser (1969) described a case of giant cell tumour of the middle ear, yet such a tumour arising from the nasopharynx and sphenoid seems to be extremely rare.
