Abstract

Swarm robotics is one of the novel approaches being explored in multiple quadrotor. It aims to mimic social behaviors of animals and insects. This paper presents the physical implementation of the swarm behavior aggregation in a quadrotor swarm. It is implemented over a quadrotor swarm testbed that makes use of external motion capture cameras. The completed algorithm makes use of the artificial potential function model with a linear attraction and bounded repulsion. Results show successful demonstration of the aggregation algorithm with minimal error in position. It is tested for an increasing number of quadrotors and errors are seen to increase with swarm size. Results show an error of 3.293 cm from the individual target position for aggregation. It also shows and average aggregation speed of 1.896 secs for all test while having an increase in aggregation speed of about 1.772 sec per increase in swarm size. The time in aggregate is seen to be at an average of 98.5405% of the time. All the tests show successful demonstration of the swarming behavior which can now mark the start of development of implementation of more complex swarming behaviors.

Abstract

This paper uses the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics technique to perform formation control of quadrotor swarms. The swarm is to be modelled to behave like water. A simple aggregation behavior is exhibited with certain primitives that act as obstacles to force formations from the swarm. Different primitives are implemented to manifest various formations. Results show that SPH outperforms APF by a margin of 7.31% for a cubic container primitive and by a margin of 27.81% for a spherical target enclosure primitive. Formation control was successfully implemented using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics and is proven to be more efficient than the benchmark algorithm.

Abstract

The property of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method of being mesh free, adaptable and sui table for tracking of individual particles makes it appropriate for approximating swarm behaviors for multi-agent robotics applications. The researchers modeled each of the swarm robots as SPH particles and then subjected them to external forces to exhibit aggregation and force certain formations. The external forces subjected to the SPH particles are gravity forces and container constraints . The containers explored in the study are simple geometrical primitives: sphere and cube . Computer simulations were done to show how SPH can facilitate in forcing swarm formations with the help of bounding primitives. Algorithm benchmarking was done to show how well SPH performs. Results show that SPH performs better than the benchmark algorithm by a margin of 0.703 and 1.016 units for the two set-ups, respectively. Actual robot implementation was also done to verify the effectivity and viability of the proposed algorithm in exhibiting the aggregation behavior. After 15 seconds of system run time, the interparticle distance and motion accuracy reached 96.93% and 91.14%, respectively.

Abstract

Because the aetiology of chronic pelvic pain is complex, studies of the condition involve extensive investigation but provide few conclusions. Numerous studies have addressed the experiences of women with chronic pelvic pain, as well as the interaction between those women and their health care providers. Our objective was to investigate how physicians at a specialised clinic perceive the medical care provided to such women. This was a qualitative study employing semi-structured interviews and content analysis. We interviewed seven physicians at the Chronic Pelvic Pain Outpatient Clinic of the University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine of Ribeir?o Preto, University of S?o Paulo, Brazil. Medical training and practice constituted the central theme of the study, which was subdivided into categories addressing the influence that the current medical training has on the type of medical care provided to women with chronic pelvic pain. Medical practice has been characterised by a reductionist approach to health and illness, as well as by the fragmentation of health care. These characteristics are, to a certain extent, the result of the biomedical model of education, which has been predominant, ignoring social, cultural, psychological and emotional aspects. There is a need to shift the medical paradigms toward a humanistic model of health care. We hope that we have provided a critical view of current medical training and practice, as well as of their effects in various health care settings, particularly in the provision of care to women with chronic pelvic pain.

Abstract

Droplet-free metal plasma sources are a promising technology for enhancing the adhesion of deposited films to a smooth surface. High-power pulsed sputtering (HPPS) plasma is an arc-free glow discharge plasma with an instantaneous power consumption of several tens of kilowatts, although the average power consumed is the same as that in conventional sputtering discharge systems. Sputtered metallic species are significantly ionized. The fractions of singly and doubly charged ions of argon and titanium in an HPPS plasma are studied using a time-averaged ion energy distribution function in the power-density region from 0.5 to 2.5 kW/cm2. Facile production of metallic ions is confirmed. Singly charged ions are dominant in the plasma. Argon and titanium ions together constitute more than 90% of the charged particles in the plasma. The metal ions are produced with increasing plasma power consumption. The instantaneous power contributes to the ionization of the plasma species. The gas ion energies is in a narrow range of a few electronvolts. Conversely, metallic ions is in a wider range of energy up to approximately 10 eV. It is seen from an optical emission spectrum of the HPPS plasma that metallic species are highly ionized.

57. Reducing impurities of multicrystalline silicon in a unidirectional solidification furnace for solar cells

Abstract

Multicrystalline silicon has now become the main material in the photovoltaic market because of its low production cost and the relative high conversion efficiency of solar cells made from this material. Effective control of carbon and oxygen impurities in the crystal is required for the production of a high-quality component. In order to reduce impurity levels in a unidirectional solidification furnace, it is proposed to add a crucible cover to the casting process. Results from numerical simulations indicate a marked reduction of carbon impurity in a multicrystalline silicon ingot. The effect of crucible cover material on impurities in multicrystalline silicon was also investigated. These results show that the carbon concentration within the silicon ingot can be reduced by 10 times if the cover is made from carbon and by 1,000 times if the cover is made from tungsten. These results show that an effective and economical method for designing a cover is to use carbon and deposit a thin layer of tungsten on it. Experimental tests have also been carried out by placing a tungsten cover above the crucible. Results indicated that the carbon impurity has significantly decreased; however, the measured carbon concentration in the crystal is larger than the theoretically predicted value, despite the use of a crucible cover. A theoretical analysis has shown that this difference is due to a reaction between the crucible and the graphite susceptor. Furthermore, global simulations have shown that this reaction has a marked effect on carbon and oxygen impurities. When the carbon activity on the surface of the graphite susceptor increases, both oxygen and carbon impurities in crystal increase rapidly. Therefore, the production of high-purity multicrystalline silicon can be improved by designing a crucible cover with a thin layer of tungsten on it and by setting a free space between the silica crucible and the graphite susceptor to prevent reaction between them.

Abstract

This paper reconsiders the design methodology of the short-channel gate-all-around (GAA) silicon-on-insulator (SOI) MOSFET and proposes an advanced concept that offers enhanced performance. The new ideas raised herein are based on gate-field engineering and source and drain (S/D) diffusion engineering. The validity of the proposal is demonstrated by device simulations. Covering the junction of a Si wire body with a relatively thick gate insulator raises the carrier density of low-doped S/D diffusion regions, resulting in a drastic reduction in the parasitic resistance (that has, up to now, hindered performance enhancement) as well as the suppression of short-channel effects due to the effective extension of channel length; it is also demonstrated that this merit can be expected even for narrow highly doped S/D diffusion regions with abrupt junctions. The simulation results suggest that 15-nm- and 20-nm-channel GAA SOI MOSFETs with the abrupt junction will be promising if the device has a body cross section of 10 nm × 10 nm and a thick insulator covers the junction. On the other hand, since it is demonstrated that the proposed GAA device must have long and graduated S/D diffusion regions in order to achieve the expected one-order-lower standby power consumption, a loss of drivability has to be accepted. However, it is shown that drivability can be improved by slightly expanding the cross section of S/D diffusion regions without seriously impacting the area penalty.

Abstract

The formation mechanism of a high density of nanovoids by annealing amorphous Al 2 O 3 thin films prepared by an electron beam deposition method was investigated. Transmission electron microscopy observations revealed that nanovoids ∼1–2 nm in size were formed by annealing amorphous Al 2 O 3 thin films at 973 K for 1–12 h, where the amorphous state was retained. The elastic stiffness, measured by a picosecond laser ultrasound method, and the density, measured by X-ray reflectivity, increased drastically after the annealing process, despite nanovoid formation. These increases indicate a change in the amorphous structure during the annealing process. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that an increase in stable AlO 6 basic units and the change in the ring distribution lead to a drastic increase in both the elastic stiffness and the density. It is probable that a pre-annealed Al 2 O 3 amorphous film consists of unstable low-density regions containing a low fraction of stable AlO 6 units and stable high-density regions containing a high fraction of stable AlO 6 units. Thus, local density growth in the unstable low-density regions during annealing leads to nanovoid formation (i.e., local volume shrinkage).

Abstract

We designed a protocol of 3-dimensional phase contrast (3D-PC-) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), which was performed in the axial plane to assess the circle of Willis and in the coronal plane to assess the arteries of the head and neck, for screening of the intra- and extracranial arterial occlusive diseases. We evaluated the accuracy of 3D-PC-MRA comparing it with intraarterial angiography. In 52 consecutive patients presenting with clinical suspicion of a stroke, common carotid bifurcation (CCB), petrous segment of internal carotid artery (C5 segment), carotid siphon, middle cerebral artery (MCA), posterior cerebral artery (PCA), vertebral artery (VA), and basilar artery (BA) were evaluated. Both examinations were blindly graded as normal, mild (0–29% stenosis), moderate (30–69% stenosis), severe (70–99% stenosis), or occluded. Abstract

Introduction/Background Falls are popular and major problem for stroke patient during their hospital stay. The aim of this study is to reveal the factors associated with the risk of fall in stroke inpatients. Material and method Retrospective study carried out with stroke hospitalized patients. Thirty-four stroke patients who fell and 34 stroke patients who did not fall during their hospital stay underwent structured medical examinations to identify factors associated with fall. The control subjects were matched for age, height, body weight, body mass index (BMI), and primary diagnosis. Potential variables related to fall risk factors were collected from medical records. A conditional logistic regression was performed to calculate odds ratios using SPSS. Clinical data were collected from January to December 2016. “An unexpected displacement of the body to a lower level than the initial position without loss of consciousness” was regarded as fall. Results Nutrition status, evaluated with modified CONUT score at admission, was significantly associated with fall risk (odds ratio = 3.11, 95% CI: 1.18–9.94). There were no statistically significant differences in the other candidate factors (e.g. sarcopenia, activities of daily living, and rehabilitation intervention) between the two groups. Conclusion Our findings demonstrated that nutrition status was associated with fall risk in stroke hospitalized patients. Further studies are needed to reveal that nutritional intervention can contribute to falls prevention in stroke patients.

Abstract

Chemical carcinogenesis is a multifactorial process comprising two main stages: initiation and promotion. Tumor promoters cause the development of tumors in initiated cells and the majority of them are non-genotoxic carcinogens. The identification of tumor promoters is important for preventing cancer. We previously identified 22 specific gene markers using a global gene expression analysis of chemically induced tumor promotion and established an in vitro real-time PCR screening assay for the assessment of the tumor promoting potential of chemicals in BALB/c 3T3 cells. Our in vitro tumor promoter screening test, based on these marker genes, enables earlier assessment, and is easier to conduct than classical methods. The general applicability of these markers, however, was unknown. In this study, to evaluate the performance of a set of markers, we independently validated a separate sample set, which had various structures and properties. Independent validation of the signature of 63 test chemicals showed an accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the assay of 96.8%, 97.0% and 96.7%, respectively. These results indicate that the tumor promoting activity assay, based on the expression of 22 marker genes, will become a valuable tool for rapid screening of potential tumor promoters.

Abstract

In 2004, we searched for very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the Galactic Plane using the CANGAROO-III stereoscopic observation system. Two different longitude regions (l = −19°.5 and l = +13°.0) on the Galactic Plane were observed during July and August 2004. We analyzed events that triggered three telescopes aiming to measure the diffuse emission component. No significant signal associated with the Galactic Plane was found from either of the regions. Assuming that the gamma-ray spectrum is described by a single power-law for energies ranging between a few GeV and TeV, lower limits of the power-law spectral indices were found to be 2.2 for both of the regions with a 99.9% confidence level. This result is consistent with the other VHE measurements and constrains a hypothesis in which a very hard (∼2.0) cosmic ray electron spectrum was introduced to explain the EGRET GeV anomaly.

Abstract

Summary. Serum ribavirin concentration is an important factor in antiviral therapy in combination with peginterferon (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin for patients with chronic hepatitis C in terms of both beneficial and adverse effects. We evaluated whether the serum ribavirin concentration can be predicted on the basis of renal function estimates. Serum creatinine and cystatin C concentrations were measured at the start of treatment in a total of 148 patients with chronic hepatitis C who underwent combination PEG-IFN and ribavirin therapy. Creatinine clearance (CrCl) and total clearance of ribavirin (CL/F) were calculated on the basis of the serum creatinine level. The glomerular filtration rate was calculated with two different formulae on the basis of the serum cystatin C level. These values were compared with serum ribavirin concentrations 4 weeks after the start of therapy. The cystatin C level increased with the progression of liver fibrosis, whereas the creatinine level was constant regardless of the degree of liver fibrosis. Significant correlation was not observed between the serum ribavirin concentration and serum creatinine level, cystatin C level, or calculated renal function estimates. However, significant correlation was found between the serum ribavirin concentration and CrCl and CL/F in patients who were given ribavirin >800 mg/day. Overall, renal function estimates do not correlate with the serum ribavirin concentration in Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis C who undergo combination PEG-IFN and ribavirin therapy. Serum creatinine-based renal function estimates might be predictive for the serum ribavirin concentration only in patients with a daily ribavirin intake of 800 mg or more.

Abstract

We observed the unidentified TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1804-216 with the CANGAROO-III atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes from May to July in 2006. We detected very high energy gamma rays above 600 GeV at the 10 sigma level in an effective exposure of 76 hr. We obtained a differential flux of (5.0+/-1.5_{stat}+/-1.6_{sys})\times 10^{-12}(E/1 TeV)^{-\alpha} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} with a photon index \alpha of 2.69 +/- 0.30_{stat} +/- 0.34_{sys}, which is consistent with that of the H.E.S.S. observation in 2004. We also confirm the extended morphology of the source. By combining our result with multi-wavelength observations, we discuss the possible counterparts of HESS J1804-216 and the radiation mechanism based on leptonic and hadronic processes for a supernova remnant and a pulsar wind nebula., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, Accepted in ApJ

Abstract

We have observed the supernova remnant MSH 15-52 (G320.4-1.2), which contains the gamma-ray pulsar PSR B1509-58, using the CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array from April to June in 2006. We detected gamma rays above 810 GeV at the 7 sigma level during a total effective exposure of 48.4 hours. We obtained a differential gamma-ray flux at 2.35 TeV of (7.9+/-1.5_{stat}+/-1.7_{sys}) \times 10^{-13} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} with a photon index of 2.21+/-0.39_{stat}+/-0.40_{sys}, which is compatible with that of the H.E.S.S. observation in 2004. The morphology shows extended emission compared to our Point Spread Function. We consider the plausible origin of the high energy emission based on a multi-wavelength spectral analysis and energetics arguments.

Abstract

The Japan Arteriosclerosis Longitudinal Study-Existing Cohorts Combine (JALS-ECC) is a pooled study based on individual participant data from existing prospective cohort studies in Japan. Its purpose was to consider associations between risk factors and cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes, as well as differences between subgroups, defined by age, gender or geographical region, which could not be detected in the smaller samples.Individual records for 66,691 participants in 21 cohort studies were pooled, accounting for a total of 575,628 person-years. From this data, there were 409 deaths attributed to stroke and 169 deaths attributed to coronary heart disease (CHD). Total stroke and CHD events were 1,478 and 178, respectively. Of the 1,424 total stroke events with a reported stroke subtype, 975 were classified as ischemic, 267 as hemorrhagic, and 178 as subarachnoid hemorrhage.The JALS-ECC collected data from existing cohort studies covering a diverse Japanese population, which has provided information about the effects of modifiable factors on the risks of the CVD. Such information should provide a reliable basis for establishing prevention strategies.

Abstract

Optical images of SN 1987A show a triple ring structure. The inner (dust) ring has recently increased in brightness and in the number of hot spots suggesting that the supernova shock wave has collided with the dense pre-existing circumstellar medium, a scenario supported by radio and X-ray observations. Such a shocked environment is widely expected to result in the acceleration of charged particles, and the accompanying emission of very high energy gamma-rays. Here, we report the results of observations made in 2004 and 2006 which yield upper limits on the TeV gamma-ray flux, which are compared with a theoretical prediction. In addition, we set upper limits on the TeV flux for four high energy objects which are located within the same field of view of the observation: the super-bubble 30 Dor C, the Crab-like pulsar PSR B0540$-$69, the X-ray binary LMC X-1, and the supernova remnant N157B., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

Seasonal changes in the gastric evacuation rate (R) and gut contents of a wild population of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss feeding on natural prey at four water temperatures (2, 7, 9 and 12° C) were measured. The R and mass of the gut contents increased with water temperature, and prey items changed seasonally. These results suggest that the R of fish feeding on natural food depends primarily on water temperature, with their consumed prey being a secondary factor.

Abstract

Microendoscopic discectomy (MED) is one of the minimally invasive endoscopic procedures for treating lumbar disc herniation. We have applied MED techniques to posterior decompression procedures for treating lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). In the present study, we examined the surgical complications in 114 consecutive patients surgically treated with MED procedures for LSS. Intraoperative complications occurred in 9 patients. Six patients (5.3%) experienced a dural tear, and three (2.6%) had a fracture of an inferior facet. Early postoperative complications occurred in 13 patients. Twelve patients (10.5%) experienced transient neurological complications. The clinical outcomes at the mean 28-month follow-up were not affected by these surgical complications. Other major complications such as nerve injury and surgical site infection were not observed. Most of the complications occurred in the initial series of patients, and the incidence of complications decreased with an increase in the surgeon's experience and the application of several preventive measures against the complications. The surgeon should undergo training when MED techniques are applied in surgical treatment in order to recognize the specific complications associated with such procedures and apply preventive measures against these complications.

Abstract

Objective – To investigate the efficacy of low dose of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) for facial synkinesis and hyperlacrimation. Material and methods – Eleven patients suffering from facial synkinesis after Bell's palsy or facial nerve injury were treated with a low dose of BTX-A, 0.5–1.25 U per point into several points. One patient showing hyperlacrimation was also treated with BTX-A. The whole observational period was 43 months. Results – On average, 5.76 U of BTX-A, which was lower than that of previous reports, was injected per treatment. In seven cases, synkinesis disappeared completely after three or fewer sessions of BTX-A injection. The mean interval between treatments was 14.5 weeks. Hyperlacrimation was completely suppressed after a single subcutaneous injection of BTX-A. Only mild subcutaneous hemorrhage was observed as adverse reactions. Conclusion – Facial synkinesis can be treated with a lower dose of BTX-A without relevant adverse reactions.

Abstract

Swarm operation in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles is an emerging technology which has numerous uses. It can be used in industrial, agricultural, and even military applications. However, it must be able to perform formations for it to be effective. Also, countermeasures must be made by the swarm to account for certain obstructions that are present in the environment. This paper aims to address this issue by implementing an artificial neural network self-organizing map to give the correct coordinates to each swarm individual such that the swarm formation would be present in the given space while avoiding the obstructions present. Testing would include subjecting the system to three different obstruction patterns in a given 3D space. The results showed that for all cases, the swarm was able to avoid all the obstructions.

Abstract

There is growing interest in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) such as quadrotors over the past several years. Cooperation among multiple quadrotors is one of the areas of focus. This paper proposes a neural network form of control for a cooperative task done by four quadrotors and will be tested through simulations. The task at hand is a ball and plate balancing problem during flight of multiple quadrotors carrying the plate. The objective is to maintain the keep the ball at the center of the plate even if the ball is introduced at different parts of the plate. The neural network controller will output the appropriate motor speeds of the rotors based on the detected area of introduction of the ball. Results show that the artificial neural network controller successfully directs the ball towards the center of the plate. The network outputs an average deviation of 0.00924 units from the expected PWM signal strength which corresponds to a 0.249% error from the expected value.

Abstract

This paper shows an implementation of a feedforward artificial neural network capable of recognizing images of the CrazyFlie 2.0 quadrotor during flight. The network is to be used in a real-time quadrotor swarming application and has to be able to successfully differentiate pictures that show a quadrotor in flight versus pictures that do not. The network was trained using a standard backpropagation algorithm and images taken from a video of the said quadrotor in flight. These images were divided into three groups: a training set and validation set for the training stage, and a testing set for verification of the trained neural network. The results showed that the neural network was able to correctly identify the images in the testing phase 100 percent of the time while achieving a 94 percent accuracy for the images in the testing set.

Abstract

A technique for estimating the age–depth relationship in an ice core and evaluating its uncertainty is presented. The age–depth relationship is mainly determined by the accumulation of snow at the site of the ice core and the thinning process due to the horizontal stretching and vertical compression of ice layers. However, since neither the accumulation process nor the thinning process are fully understood, it is essential to incorporate observational information into a model that describes the accumulation and thinning processes. In the proposed technique, the age as a function of depth is estimated from age markers and δ18O data. The estimation is achieved using the particle Markov chain Monte Carlo (PMCMC) method, in which the sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) method is combined with the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. In this hybrid method, the posterior distributions for the parameters in the models for the accumulation and thinning processes are computed using the Metropolis method, in which the likelihood is obtained with the SMC method. Meanwhile, the posterior distribution for the age as a function of depth is obtained by collecting the samples generated by the SMC method with Metropolis iterations. The use of this PMCMC method enables us to estimate the age–depth relationship without assuming either linearity or Gaussianity. The performance of the proposed technique is demonstrated by applying it to ice core data from Dome Fuji in Antarctica.

Abstract

The aims of this phase I/II study of docetaxel and S-1 were to determine the dose-limiting toxicity (DLT), maximum-tolerated dose (MTD), and recommended dose (RD) in the phase I part and to explore the tumour response, survival and safety in the phase II part. Patients with histologically- or cytologically confirmed unresectable or recurrent gastric cancer were eligible. Treatment consisted of intravenous docetaxel on day 1 (starting dose 50 mg m(-2)) and oral S-1 at a fixed dose of 40 mg m(-2) twice daily on days 1-14, every 4 weeks up to six cycles. Nine patients took part in the phase I portion of the study. The MTD of docetaxel was determined to be 50 mg m(-2), with the DLTs of grade 3 infection associated with grade 3 neutropenia and grade 4 neutropenia during S-1 administration. The RD of docetaxel was 40 mg m(-2) in combination with S-1 40 mg m(-2) b.i.d. The efficacy and safety of this regimen was therefore assessed in 46 patients with at least one measurable lesion. The overall response rate and estimated median overall survival were 46% (95% CI, 31-61%) and 14.0 months (8.3-17.3 months), respectively. The most common grade 3/4 toxicity was neutropenia (67% of patients), which was predictable and manageable. This regimen showed promising activity with moderate toxicities in advanced gastric cancer.

Abstract

Several different species of ions, Au, Fe, Ag, Ti and Si, were implanted into austenite stainless steel sheets at an energy of 3 MeV respectively. The martensite transformation induced with the ion implantation was investigated with transmission electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. The residual stresses induced with ion implantation were evaluated by the curvature technique. The effects of irradiation doses and ion species on the residual stress near surface induced by ion implantation were investigated. It is found that compressive residual stresses were induced by all the ions, and Fe and Au ions, among these ions, produced a higher level of residual stress at the same implantation. It shows that ion implantation can be employed to control and modify the internal stress near surface by changing the irradiation dose and selecting ion specie of the ion implantation.

HHT (Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia or Rendu Osler Weber disease) is a known autosomal dominant dysplasia. The first clinical presentation of HHT in a child may be a cerebral or spinal AVM. We present the case of a young boy with HHT who had a previous spinal cord AVF treated by surgical obliteration and then presented with a spinal dural AVF nine months later. This patient had surgical obliteration of a spinal cord perimedullary AVF and subsequently developed a new spinal dural AVF at a different level. A 600-MHz single-chip multiprocessor, which includes two M32R 32-bit CPU cores , a 512-kB shared SRAM and an internal shared pipelined bus, was fabricated using a 0.15-/spl mu/m CMOS process for embedded systems. This multiprocessor is based on symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), and supports modified-exclusive-shared-invalid (MESI) cache coherency protocol. The multiprocessor inherits the advantages of previously reported single-chip multiprocessors, while its multiprocessor architecture is optimized for use as an embedded processor. The internal shared pipelined bus has a low latency and large bandwidth (4.8 GB/s). These features enhance the performance of the multiprocessor. In addition, the multiprocessor employs various low-power techniques. The multiprocessor dissipates 800 mW in a 1.5-V 600-MHz multiprocessor mode. Standby power dissipation is less than 1.5 mW at 1.5 V. Hence, the multiprocessor achieves higher performance and lower power consumption. This paper presents a single-chip multiprocessor architecture optimized for use as an embedded processor and its various low-power techniques.

We presented the comparative study of spin correlation functions of generalized spin orbital density functional theory (GSO-DFT) and configuration interaction (CI) wave function (WF) approaches, in particular for simple models. The differences between them are ascribed to that of their symmetry frameworks, which is similar to that between the Heisenberg (HB) model and its mean-field approximation. Therefore, the prescriptions to spin-frustrated and -degenerated systems are examined from the viewpoint of the HB model and its solutions. Both nondynamic electron correlation and spin-dependent interactions are found to be important in the surface crossing regions. Abstract

Water vapor effects on fire extinguishment are studied using a tubular flame burner and a CHEMKIN program. Methane/air mixtures with water vapor and carbon dioxide suppressant are studied on the basis of flammability limit. A 353 K water vapor is mixed with methane/air and is burned in a tubular flame. The whole mixture is kept at the constant temperature by heating up the mixture line. Although the heat capacities of water vapor and carbon dioxide are different each other, the methane flammability areas for both cases in the methane/suppressant coordinate are almost the same. Numerical analysis using a CHEMKIN program shows the same results which certifies both experimental and numerical results. Three suppressants, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and halon, are compared to clarify their suppression effects on methane/air premixed flame. From this good agreement with experiments, the CHEMKIN calculation is worth doing to see the flammability limit, even probably for higher hydrocarbon flames and many suppressants. This result enables water to be a good suppressant for fire.

Abstract

A basic study on the nuclear characteristics in the accelerator driven subcritical reactor (ADSR) was performed through a series of neutronics design calculations and reactor physics experiments. Calculations were executed mainly by the MCNPX code, and experiments were performed at the Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA). Some nuclear features of the research reactor type ADSR were revealed through the present study. The following facts were found: 1) Further studies are necessary concerning the nuclear data in the high energy region and the generated neutrons through the spallation reactions especially by the light nuclei and the lower energy protons. 2) The adjustment of subcriticality by the control rod significantly affects the reactor power of ADSR because of the distortion in the neutron flux distribution caused by the control rod insertion. 3) An accurate calculation is essential to evaluate the neutron multiplication in the ADSR. 4) The neutronics behavior after a pulse injection can be approximately simulated by the calculation.

Abstract

Activation of Src, which has an intrinsic protein tyrosine kinase activity, has been demonstrated in many human tumours, such as colorectal and breast cancers, and is closely associated with the pathogenesis and metastatic potential of these cancers. In this study, we have examined the effect of activated Src on the sensitivity to taxotere, an anticancer drug targeting microtubules, using v-src-transfected HAG-1 human gall bladder epithelial cells. As compared with parental HAG-1 cell line, v-src-transfected HAG/src3-1 cells became 5.9 and 7.0-fold sensitive to taxotere for 2 and 24-h exposure, respectively. By contrast, HAG-1 cells transfected with activated Ras, which acts downstream of Src, acquired approximately 2.5∼4.8-fold taxotere resistance. The taxotere sensitivity in HAG/src3-1 cells was reversed, if not completely, by herbimycin A, a specific inhibitor of Src family protein tyrosine kinase, indicating that Src protein tyrosine kinase augments sensitivity to taxotere. Treatment of HAG/src3-1 cells with taxotere resulted in phosphorylation of Bcl-2 and subsequent induction of apoptotic cell death, whereas neither Bcl-2 phosphorylation nor apoptosis occurred in parental or c-H-ras-transfected HAG-1 cells. Interestingly, the Bcl-2 protein is overexpressed in v-src-transfected cell line, compared to those in parental or Ras-transfected cell line. Treatment of HAG/src3-1 cells with herbimycin A significantly reduced the expression and phosphorylation of Bcl-2, and abrogated taxotere-induced apoptosis, suggesting a potential role for Src protein tyrosine kinase in the taxotere-induced apoptotic events. H-7, a protein kinase C inhibitor and wortmannin, a phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI-3 kinase) inhibitor, neither altered taxotere sensitivity nor inhibited taxotere-induced apoptosis in these cells. These data indicate that the ability of activated Src to increase taxotere sensitivity would be mediated by apoptotic events occurring through Src to downstream signal transduction pathways toward Bcl-2 phosphorylation, but not by activated Ras, PI-3 kinase or protein kinase C.
