AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the ways in which Irish and Australian Nurse Practitioners (NPs) implement leadership and research in their roles and whether there is a difference in how leadership and research are demonstrated between NPs in Ireland and Australia. BACKGROUND: The original concept of the NP role was to expand nursing practice in order to provide high-quality, accessible health care to patients. This placed NPs at the crux of changes to healthcare delivery. Implementing these changes requires leadership. Research demonstrates the effects of these changes to healthcare delivery and contributes to healthcare knowledge from the nursing profession. DESIGN: In the qualitative phase of a mixed methods study, an interpretative descriptive approach was used to draw on participant experiences. METHODS: Thirty-eight respondents agreed to be interviewed following an online survey. Ten interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analysed using Braun and Clarke thematic analysis method. The research complied with the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research, COREQ. RESULTS: Ten participants, five NPs from Ireland and five from Australia were interviewed. Four themes emerged from the analysis: (a) Innovative leadership, which included the categories of leadership activities, the work of NPs and trailblazers; (b) Optimism, incorporating pride in achievements, the future outlook for the role and continued innovation of NPs over time; (c) Research, which included the NP research role, research challenges, support and research leadership; and (d) Resilience, which included overcoming resistance, isolation and seeking positive support systems. CONCLUSION: Nurse Practitioners are clinical leaders focused on improving healthcare delivery for patient populations. There is a lack of understanding of the NP role. Nurse Practitioners lack confidence to be independently research active. Research by NPs requires support from nurses in academia.

Conclusion: Nurse Practitioners in both Ireland and Australia identify themselves as leaders of the nursing profession. NP work practices are primarily focused on provision of direct patient care. Research activity is lacking among NPs. Leadership ability influences research outcomes for NPs in both Ireland and Australia.

The management of heart failure (HF) is complex. As a consequence, most cardiology society guidelines now state that HF care should be delivered in a multiprofessional manner. The evidence base for this approach now means that the establishment of HF management programmes is a priority. This document aims to summarize the key elements which should be involved in, as well as some more desirable features which can improve the delivery of care in a HF management programme, while bearing in mind that the specifics of the service may vary from site to site. We envisage a situation whereby all patients have access to the best possible care, including improved access to palliative care services, informed by and responsive to advances in diagnosis management and treatment. The goal should be to provide a seamless system of care across primary and hospital care so that the management of every patient is optimal, no matter where they begin or continue their health-care journey.

In this collection of thirteen essays Lindemann successfully meets her goal of offering recent criticism that recenters Cather as a writer who responded fully to the "changing social and demographic conditions" of her time. The essays indeed encourage reading "against the grain of Cather's escapism" in a range of "interpretative possibilities." Particularly useful are essays exploring little-examined areas of Cather scholarship, including the late Susan Rosowski's study of the comic sense of self in Cather's works and Lisa Marcus's discussion of Cather and the "geography of Jewishness." Rosowski resituates Claude Wheeler's yearning for something splendid in One of Ours within the comedic tradition of the optimistic sacred fool who is hardly a tragic figure. Marcus's essay, though overlooking subtle tones and sarcasm that might clarify Cather's ambivalence toward Jewishness, provides excellent background on the Jewish culture of New York in Cather's day and elucidates the dual roles Jews play in Cather's works, that is, the "embodiment of American industry" and "excessive perversion of the American ideal." One regrets, however, that this essay begins with pointed criticism of Joan Acocella's Willa Cather and the Politics of Criticism (2000) and inadvertently becomes a precursor to Jonathan Goldberg's vitriolic attack on Acocella in the subsequent essay. Goldberg, while well delineating variant critical responses to Cather's sexual politics, detracts from his otherwise cogent argument by devolving into a multi-page and scathing "review" of Acocella.

Steven Trout offers a fresh approach to the study of Cather as a writer of war fiction and situates her squarely among the principally male writers of World War I. In lucid prose, Trout presents a convincing argument that Cather's prize-winning but much maligned novel One of Ours is "far more modernist than most critics have assumed" and merits a place alongside works by Hemingway and Remarque as a realistic account of the American experience in the "War to End All Wars."

The nominalizing -er suffix has been extremely productive throughout the history of English, and in Present-day English it has developed a wide range of base and referent types. Yet most formal linguistic treatments account satisfactorily for only a fraction of the types of -er nominals actually found. I propose a cognitive model which not only addresses the problems with verb-based forms that are encountered in other models, but includes an account of all the nonverb-based -er nominals as well.
