In the problem Max Lin, we are given a system $Az=b$ of $m$ linear equations with $n$ variables over $\mathbb{F}_2$ in which each equation is assigned a positive weight and we wish to find an assignment of values to the variables that maximizes the excess, which is the total weight of satisfied equations minus the total weight of falsified equations. Using an algebraic approach, we obtain a lower bound for the maximum excess. Max Lin Above Average (Max Lin AA) is a parameterized version of Max Lin introduced by Mahajan et al. (Proc. IWPEC'06 and J. Comput. Syst. Sci. 75, 2009). In Max Lin AA all weights are integral and we are to decide whether the maximum excess is at least $k$, where $k$ is the parameter. It is not hard to see that we may assume that no two equations in $Az=b$ have the same left-hand side and $n={\rm rank A}$. Using our maximum excess results, we prove that, under these assumptions, Max Lin AA is fixed-parameter tractable for a wide special case: $m\le 2^{p(n)}$ for an arbitrary fixed function $p(n)=o(n)$. Max $r$-Lin AA is a special case of Max Lin AA, where each equation has at most $r$ variables. In Max Exact $r$-SAT AA we are given a multiset of $m$ clauses on $n$ variables such that each clause has $r$ variables and asked whether there is a truth assignment to the $n$ variables that satisfies at least $(1-2^{-r})m + k2^{-r}$ clauses. Using our maximum excess results, we prove that for each fixed $r\ge 2$, Max $r$-Lin AA and Max Exact $r$-SAT AA can be solved in time $2^{O(k \log k)}+m^{O(1)}.$ This improves $2^{O(k^2)}+m^{O(1)}$-time algorithms for the two problems obtained by Gutin et al. (IWPEC 2009) and Alon et al. (SODA 2010), respectively.

Erd\H os and R\'{e}nyi claimed and Vu proved that for all $h \ge 2$ and for all $\epsilon > 0$, there exists $g = g_h(\epsilon)$ and a sequence of integers $A$ such that the number of ordered representations of any number as a sum of $h$ elements of $A$ is bounded by $g$, and such that $|A \cap [1,x]| \gg x^{1/h - \epsilon}$. We give two new proofs of this result. The first one consists of an explicit construction of such a sequence. The second one is probabilistic and shows the existence of such a $g$ that satisfies $g_h(\epsilon) \ll \epsilon^{-1}$, improving the bound $g_h(\epsilon) \ll \epsilon^{-h+1}$ obtained by Vu. Finally we use the "alteration method" to get a better bound for $g_3(\epsilon)$, obtaining a more precise estimate for the growth of $B_3[g]$ sequences., Comment: 12 pages, no figures

We give asymptotic sharp estimates for the cardinality of a set of residue classes with the property that the representation function is bounded by a prescribed number. The aim of this paper is to prove a general version of Pl\"unnecke's inequality. Namely, assume that for finite sets $A$, $B_1, ... B_k$ we have information on the size of the sumsets $A+B_{i_1}+... +B_{i_l}$ for all choices of indices $i_1, ... i_l.$ Then we prove the existence of a non-empty subset $X$ of $A$ such that we have `good control' over the size of the sumset $X+B_1+... +B_k$. As an application of this result we generalize an inequality of \cite{gymr} concerning the submultiplicativity of cardinalities of sumsets., Comment: 8 pages

For finite sets of integers $A_1, A_2 ... A_n$ we study the cardinality of the $n$-fold sumset $A_1+... +A_n$ compared to those of $n-1$-fold sumsets $A_1+... +A_{i-1}+A_{i+1}+... A_n$. We prove a superadditivity and a submultiplicativity property for these quantities. Let A be a finite set of integers. For a polynomial f(x_1,...,x_n) with integer coefficients, let f(A) = {f(a_1,...,a_n) : a_1,...,a_n \in A}. In this paper it is proved that for every pair of normalized binary linear forms f(x,y)=u_1x+v_1y and g(x,y)=u_2x+v_2y with integral coefficients, there exist arbitrarily large finite sets of integers A and B such that |f(A)| > |g(A)| and |f(B)| < |g(B)|., Comment: 20 pages

The Schinzel hypothesis claims (but it seems hopeless to prove) that any irreducible Q[x] polynomial without a constant factor assumes infinitely many prime values at integer places. On the other hand, it is easy to see that a reducible Q[x] polynomial can have only finitely many such places. In this paper we prove that a reducible Z[x] polynomial of degree n (where n is not 4 or 5) can have at most n+2 such places, and there exist examples with n+1 places. If the Schinzel hypothesis and the k-prime-tuple conjecture are true, then there are also polynomials with n+2 such places. (For n=4 or 5 the maximum possible value is 8.) If a Z[x] polynomial is the product of two non-constant integer-valued Q[x] polynomials, then there are at most 1.87234...n+o(n) such places. Even in this case, the number of integer places with positive prime values is at most n. More generally, if f=gh \in R[x] is a product of two non-constant real polynomials, then the number of real places x such that |g(x)|=1 or |h(x)=1|, while f(x)>1, is at most n. For a natural complex version of this last statement we give a counterexample. A famous result of Freiman describes the structure of finite sets A of integers with small doubling property. If |A + A| <= K|A| then A is contained within a multidimensional arithmetic progression of dimension d(K) and size f(K)|A|. We study the extent to which sets A in Z/NZ, N prime, resemble sets of integers from the additive point of view (``up to Freiman isomorphism''). We give a direct proof of a result of Freiman, namely that if |A + A| < K|A| and |A| < c(K)N then A is Freiman isomorphic to a set of integers. Because we avoid appealing to Freiman's structure theorem, we get a reasonable bound: we can take c(K) > exp(-cK^2 log K). As a byproduct of our argument we obtain a sharpening of the second author's result on sets with small sumset in torsion groups. Let A be a subset of an abelian group G. We say that A is sum-free if there do not exist x,y and z in A satisfying x + y = z. We determine, for any G, the cardinality of the largest sum-free subset of G. This equals c(G)|G| where c(G) is a constant depending on G and lying in the interval [2/7,1/2]. We also estimate the number of sum-free subsets of G. It turns out that log_2 of this number is c(G)|G| + o(|G|), which is tight up to the o-term. For certain abelian groups, those whose order is divisible by a small prime of the form 3k + 2, we can obtain an asymptotic for the number of sum-free sets., Comment: 25 pages, even more revisions and corrections

Consider a trigonometric polynomial f of degree N, and associate to it the polynomial F in which each coefficient of f is replaced by its absolute value. F is called the majorant of f. We show that the L^3 norm of f can be larger than that of F by a power of N. Similar examples could be constructed in which 3 is replaced by any p > 2 not equal to an even integer. This provides a negative answer to a question, the "Hardy-Littlewood majorant problem", which has been the object of some study. Let S be an abelian semigroup, and A a finite subset of S. The sumset hA consists of all sums of h elements of A, with repetitions allowed. Let |hA| denote the cardinality of hA. Elementary lattice point arguments are used to prove that an arbitrary abelian semigroup has polynomial growth, that is, there exists a polynomial p(t) such that |hA| = p(h) for all sufficiently large h.
