We present the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS) a survey of 20 fields containing distant galaxy clusters with redshifts ranging from 0.4 to almost 1.0. Candidate clusters were chosen from among the brightest objects identified in the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey, half with estimated redshift z_est~0.5 and half with z_est~0.8. They were confirmed by identifying red sequences in moderately deep two colour data from VLT/FORS2. For confirmed candidates we have assembled deep three-band optical photometry using VLT/FORS2, deep near-infrared photometry in one or two bands using NTT/SOFI, deep optical spectroscopy using VLT/FORS2, wide field imaging in two or three bands using the ESO Wide Field Imager, and HST/ACS mosaic images for 10 of the most distant clusters. This first paper presents our sample and the VLT photometry we have obtained. We present images, colour-magnitude diagrams and richness estimates for our clusters, as well as giving redshifts and positions for the brightest cluster members. Subsequent papers will present our infrared photometry, spectroscopy, HST and wide-field imaging, as well as a wealth of further analysis and science results. We present deep 3.6 - 8 micron imaging of the Hubble Deep Field South with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We study Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) at z>2 selected by Js - Ks > 2.3 and compare them to a sample of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z=2-3. The observed UV-to-8 micron spectral energy distributions are fit with stellar population models to constrain star formation histories and derive stellar masses. We find that 70% of the DRGs are best described by dust-reddened star forming models and 30% are very well fit with old and ``dead'' models. Using only the I - Ks and Ks - 4.5 micron colors we can effectively separate the two groups. The dead systems are among the most massive at z~2.5 (mean stellar mass = 0.8 x 10^11 Msun) and likely formed most of their stellar mass at z>5. To a limit of 0.5 x 10^11 Msun their number density is ~10 x lower than that of local early-type galaxies. Furthermore, we use the IRAC photometry to derive rest-frame near-infrared J, H, and K fluxes. The DRGs and LBGs together show a large variation (a factor of 6) in the rest-frame K-band mass-to-light ratios (M/L_K), implying that even a Spitzer 8 micron-selected sample would be very different from a mass-selected sample. The average M/L_K of the DRGs is about three times higher than that of the LBGs, and DRGs dominate the high-mass end. The M/L_K ratios and ages of the two samples appear to correlate with derived stellar mass, with the most massive galaxies being the oldest and having the highest mass-to-light ratios, similar as found in the low-redshift universe., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ Letters, uses emulateapj

We present spectroscopic observations of galaxies in 4 clusters at z = 0.7-0.8 and in one cluster at z~0.5 obtained with the FORS2 spectrograph on the VLT as part of the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS), a photometric and spectroscopic survey of 20 intermediate to high redshift clusters. We describe our target selection, mask design, observation and data reduction procedures, using these first 5 clusters to demonstrate how our strategies maximise the number of cluster members for which we obtain spectroscopy. We present catalogues containing positions, I-band magnitudes and spectroscopic redshifts for galaxies in the fields of our 5 clusters. These contain 236 cluster members, with the number of members per cluster ranging from 30 to 67. Our spectroscopic success rate, i.e. the fraction of spectroscopic targets which are cluster members, averages 50% and ranges from 30% to 75%. We use a robust biweight estimator to measure cluster velocity dispersions from our spectroscopic redshift samples. We also make a first assessment of substructure within our clusters. The velocity dispersions range from 400 to 1100 km s-1. Some of the redshift distributions are significantly non-Gaussian and we find evidence for significant substructure in two clusters, one at z~0.79 and the other at z~0.54. Both have velocity dispersions exceeding 1000 km s-1 but are clearly not fully virialised; their velocity dispersions may thus be a poor indicator of their masses. The properties of these first 5 EDisCS clusters span a wide range in redshift, velocity dispersion, richness and substructure, but are representative of the sample as a whole. We investigate the nature of the substantial population of high-z galaxies with Js-Ks>2.3 discovered as part of our FIRES survey. This colour cut efficiently isolates z>2 galaxies with red rest-frame optical colors ("Distant Red Galaxies" or DRGs). We select objects in the 2.5'x2.5' HDF-South (HDF-S) and 5'x5' field around the MS1054-03 cluster; the surface densities at Ks<21 are 1.6+-0.6 and 1.0+-0.2 arcmin^-2. We discuss the 34 DRGs at 2

We study the rest-frame (U-V) color-magnitude relation in 4 clusters at redshifts 0.7-0.8, drawn from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey. We confirm that red-sequence galaxies in these clusters can be described as an old, passively-evolving population and we demonstrate, by comparison with the Coma cluster, that there has been significant evolution in the stellar mass distribution of red-sequence galaxies since z~0.75. The EDisCS clusters exhibit a deficiency of low luminosity passive red galaxies. Defining as `faint' all galaxies in the passive evolution corrected range 0.4>~ L/L*>~0.1, the luminous-to-faint ratio of red-sequence galaxies varies from 0.34+/-0.06 for the Coma cluster to 0.81+/-0.18 for the high redshift clusters. These results exclude a synchronous formation of all red-sequence galaxies and suggest that a large fraction of the faint red galaxies in current clusters moved on to the red-sequence relatively recently. We analyse the rest-frame (U-V) colour-magnitude relation for 2 clusters at redshift 0.7 and 0.8, drawn from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey. By comparing with the population of red galaxies in the Coma cluster, we show that the high redshift clusters exhibit a deficit of passive faint red galaxies. Our results show that the red-sequence population cannot be explained in terms of a monolithic and synchronous formation scenario. The proposed infrared space interferometry mission Darwin has two main aims: (i) to detect and characterize exo-planets similar to the Earth, and (ii) to carry out astrophysical imaging in the wavelength range 6 - 20 micron at a sensitivity similar to JWST, but at an angular resolution up to 100 times higher. In this contribution we will first briefly discuss the imaging performance of the Darwin mission. Using deep near-infrared imaging of the Hubble Deep Field South with ISAAC on the Very Large Telescope we find 6 large disk-like galaxies at redshifts z = 1.4-3.0. The galaxies, selected in K_s (2.2 micron), are regular and surprisingly large in the near-infrared (rest-frame optical), with face-on effective radii r_e = 0.65"-0.9" or 5.0-7.5 h_70^-1 kpc in a Lambda-CDM cosmology, comparable to the Milky Way. The surface brightness profiles are consistent with an exponential law over 2-3 effective radii. The WFPC2 morphologies in Hubble Space Telescope imaging (rest-frame UV) are irregular and show complex aggregates of star-forming regions ~2" (~15 h_70^-1 kpc) across, symmetrically distributed around the K_s-band centers. The spectral energy distributions show clear breaks in the rest-frame optical. The breaks are strongest in the central regions of the galaxies, and can be identified as the age-sensitive Balmer/4000 Angstrom break. The most straightforward interpretation is that these galaxies are large disk galaxies; deep NIR data are indispensable for this classification. The candidate disks constitute 50% of galaxies with L_V > 6 x 10^10 h_70^-2 L_sun at z = 1.4-3.0. This discovery was not expected on the basis of previously studied samples. The clustering properties of faint K<24 galaxies are measured in ultradeep J, H and K near-IR images of the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S), obtained with ISAAC at the VLT. A relatively large clustering amplitude is found up to K=24, at a level comparable to the measurements at K~19. The redshift distribution of K<24 galaxies extends to z_phot~4-5, and ~40% of the galaxies are at z_phot>2.At the highest redshifts, 21.7 reach r_0~8 h^-1 Mpc comoving. This is a factor of 3--4 higher than the correlation length of LBGs with similar number densities, down to V_606<27, and is also larger than the correlation length of galaxies with blue J-K<1.7 colors. Hence at z about 3 a color-density relation is observed which is similar to that observed locally. Fluctuations in the amplitude of clustering due to cosmic variance may affect our estimates derived from the small HDF-S field, but these are unlikely to change our main conclusions. We present deep near-infrared (NIR) Js, H, and Ks-band ISAAC imaging of the WFPC2 field of the HDF-S. The 2.5'x 2.5' high Galactic latitude field was observed with the VLT under the best seeing conditions with integration times amounting to 33.6 hours in Js, 32.3 hours in H, and 35.6 hours in Ks. We reach total AB magnitudes for point sources of 26.8, 26.2, and 26.2 respectively (3 sigma), which make it the deepest ground-based NIR observations to date, and the deepest Ks-band data in any field. The effective seeing of the coadded images is ~0.45" in Js, ~0.48" in H, and ~0.46" in Ks. Using published WFPC2 optical data, we constructed a Ks-limited multicolor catalog containing 833 sources down to Ks,tot ~< 26 (AB), of which 624 have seven-band optical-to-NIR photometry. These data allow us to select normal galaxies from their rest-frame optical properties to high redshift (z ~< 4). The observations, data reduction and properties of the final images are discussed, and we address the detection and photometry procedures that were used in making the catalog. In addition, we present deep number counts, color distributions and photometric redshifts of the HDF-S galaxies. We find that our faint Ks-band number counts are flatter than published counts in other deep fields, which might reflect cosmic variations or different analysis techniques. Compared to the HDF-N, we find many galaxies with very red V-H colors at photometric redshifts 1.95 < z < 3.5. These galaxies are bright in Ks with infrared colors redder than Js-Ks > 2.3 (in Johnson magnitudes). Because they are extremely faint in the observed optical, they would be missed by ultraviolet-optical selection techniques, such as the U-dropout method., Comment: LaTeX, 24 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables. We have obtained 1-2 A resolution optical Echellette spectra of the nuclear star cluster in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4449. The light is clearly dominated by a very young (6-10 Myr) population of stars. For our age dating, we have used recent population synthesis models to interpret the observed equivalent width of stellar absorption features such as the HI Balmer series and the CaII triplet around 8500 A. We also compare the observed spectrum of the nuclear cluster to synthesized spectra of simple stellar populations of varying ages. All these approaches yield a consistent cluster age. Metallicity estimates based on the relative intensities of various ionization lines yield no evidence for significant enrichment in the center of this low mass galaxy: the metallicity of the nuclear cluster is about one fourth of the solar value, in agreement with independent estimates for the disk material of NGC 4449., Comment: 24 pages (incl. 7 figures), accepted by AJ, March 2001 issue revised version with minor changes and additions, one additional figure

A small number of LINERs have been seen to display variable H-alpha emission with a very broad, double-peaked profile. Recent observations with the Hubble Space Telescope indicate that such emission may be a common attribute of LINERs. The double-peaked or double-shouldered line profiles resemble those found in a subset of broad-line radio galaxies. Several lines of argument suggest that such features trace an outer thin accretion disk irradiated by an inner ion torus, in accord with advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) models. Variability monitoring of this broad H-alpha component thus may provide a means of testing accretion physics on small scales within these sources., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Several prototypes of a Cherenkov Correlated Timing (CCT) Detector have been tested at the KEK-PS test beam line. We describe the results for Cherenkov light yields and timing characteristics from quartz and acrylic bar prototypes.
