Background: An increased intestinal permeability is a common feature in patients with diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). Probiotics have shown to improve IBS symptoms and might also affect intestinal barrier function. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 6-week intervention with Limosilactobacillus reuteri ATCC PTA 6475 alone (single strain) or in combination with Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 (dual strain) on gut barrier function, immune markers, and symptoms in IBS-D patients (ClinicalTrials.gov registration number: NCT03986476). Methods: 65 IBS-D patients were randomised into three groups (placebo, single strain, dual strain). Small and large intestinal permeability were assessed using a multi-sugar urinary recovery test. Blood, saliva, faecal samples, and several symptom scales were collected before, and after three and six weeks of intervention. Results: Small and large intestinal permeability as well as other markers of gut barrier function were not significantly affected by the probiotic interventions. Serum IL-6 levels showed a tendency to be reduced in the single strain group (descriptive p = 0.052). In addition, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein was significantly reduced in the dual strain group (p = 0.041). The participants in both treatment groups reported less gastrointestinal symptoms after three weeks, but this reached significance only in the dual strain group (total score: p = 0.032, pain subscore: p = 0.028). After six weeks, none of the assessed symptoms were significantly different from the placebo. Conclusion: The probiotic compounds investigated in this study did not seem to affect IBS-D patients' gut barrier function, but showed potential anti-inflammatory and symptom-improving properties, which need to be confirmed in larger study cohorts. - Abstract
The presence of visceral adipose tissue implies a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases than subcutaneous adiposity, the most dangerous heart fat. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) could have great potential as a detection indicator of cardiovascular diseases, although it has seldom been studied in Spanish children. Objective: The objective of the current research was to describe the values of EAT in a Spanish pediatric population and to investigate the associations between EAT and anthropometric measures, blood pressure, lipid and glucose profiles, and metabolic syndrome. Method: An analytical cross-sectional study of elementary and high school students (aged 6 to 17) measured anthropometrics, blood pressure, lipid and glycemic profiles, and echocardiographic fat thickness. The analysis was based on regression and discriminant analysis. Results: The results of this study (N = 227) showed that the body mass index (BMI) was 20.29 ± 4.54, with an overweight set of 49.77%, and the percentage for metabolic syndrome was 5.3%. EAT was linked to being male, BMI percentile, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio (p < 0.001), hypertension, higher low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, and metabolic syndrome (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This paper argues that in children with higher elevated EAT thickness values, this correlates with cardiovascular risk factors including high blood pressure, elevated LDL levels, and metabolic syndrome. The intestine plays a fundamental role as a regulator of the mucosal immune response, mostly through the production and secretion of secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA) by the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). Enteral stimulation, a balance between the commensal microbiota and pathogenic microorganisms, in addition to an adequate nutritional status is required for the optimal immune function of the intestine. Fasting subjects or those supported only with parenteral nutrition, show a progressive anatomical and physiological deterioration of the GALT, triggering a series of alterations resulting in a decrease in the intestinal immune response, modification in the type of microbiota, and changes that lead to or aggravate malnutrition. Patients with malnutrition present an increase in the rate of nosocomial infections, hospital length of stay, and mortality. An adequate nutritional assessment at hospital admission and avoiding long periods of fasting are paramount to prevent these unfavorable outcomes. Herein, we present a mini-state of the art review on the role and importance of enteral stimulation by GALT-mediated immune response., Author(s): Gabriela Quiroz-Olguín [sup.1] [sup.2] , Gabriela Gutiérrez-Salmeán [sup.2] , Juan G Posadas-Calleja [sup.3] , María F Padilla-Rubio [sup.1] , Aurora E Serralde-Zúñiga [sup.1] Author Affiliations: (1) Clinical Nutrition Service, [...]

This research explores the potential to analyze bank card payments and ATM cash withdrawals in order to map and quantify how people are impacted by and recover from natural disasters. Our approach defines a disaster-affected community's economic recovery time as the time needed to return to baseline activity levels in terms of number of bank card payments and ATM cash withdrawals. For Hurricane Odile, which hit the state of Baja California Sur (BCS) in Mexico between 15 and 17 September 2014, we measured and mapped communities' economic recovery time, which ranged from 2 to 40 days in different locations. We found that -- among individuals with a bank account -- the lower the income level, the shorter the time needed for economic activity to return to normal levels. Gender differences in recovery times were also detected and quantified. In addition, our approach evaluated how communities prepared for the disaster by quantifying expenditure growth in food or gasoline before the hurricane struck. We believe this approach opens a new frontier in measuring the economic impact of disasters with high temporal and spatial resolution, and in understanding how populations bounce back and adapt., Comment: Presented at the Data For Good Exchange 2016

- Abstract
The incorporation of novel, functional, and sustainable foods in human diets is increasing because of their beneficial effects and environmental-friendly nature. Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) has proved to be a suitable source of bioactive peptides via enzymatic hydrolysis. These peptides could be responsible for modulating several physiological processes if able to reach the target organ. The bioavailable peptides contained in a hydrolysate obtained with Alcalase, as functional foods, were identified using a transwell system with Caco-2 cell culture as the absorption model. Furthermore, 20 unique peptides with a molecular weight lower than 1000 Da and the higher statistical significance of the peptide-precursor spectrum match (−10 log P) were assessed by in silico tools to suggest which peptides could be those exerting the demonstrated bioactivity. From the characterized peptides, considering the molecular features and the results obtained, the peptides AGDAHWTY, VDAHPIKAM, PNYHPNPR, and ALPPGAVHW are anticipated to be contributing to the antioxidant and/or ACE inhibitor activity of the chia protein hydrolysates.

- Abstract
A group of restaurants created a club around a lamb meat product to improve its promotion and achieve customers’ commitment and satisfaction. The objective is to analyse the relationship between the restaurateurs and the final consumer (B2C). A structured questionnaire survey was used to collect the data. Consumers like promotional activities, but their participation is rather low depending on age. From the structural equation model, it was determined that customer satisfaction has a high influence on customer commitment to the establishment; however, promotion and recognition have a very low influence on customer satisfaction and commitment., Un grupo de restaurantes crearon un club en torno a la carne de cordero para mejorar su promoción, el compromiso y la satisfacción de los clientes.

2023 Acuerdos transformativos CRUE, This study presents our findings from a systematic analysis of gender and entrepreneurship in Spanish and Argentinian incubators for 2020 and 2021. We improved our understanding of the unique challenges women entrepreneurs face in Spain compared to those in Argentina. Regarding gender and entrepreneurship in incubators, our findings show that neither country exhibits significant differences in success or failure rates nor in the type of financial model (state or public). However, we encountered significant differences in the internationalisation rates of businesses, which reflect a predominantly male profile. Finally, the analysis of the reach of this rate will focus on the type of financing, state versus private., Depto. de Economía Aplicada, Estructura e Historia, Fac. de Comercio y Turismo, TRUE, pub, APC financiada por la UCM

- Abstract
The main objective of this study is to describe the teaching experience in an applied thermodynamics course, using MATLAB applications developed with MATLAB® App Designer. This course is compulsory for students in their sophomore year of the BSc in Chemical Engineering. MATLAB applications are developed to serve as tools for the teaching of thermodynamic cycles: steam and gas power, and vapor-compression refrigeration cycles. The computer applications are case-based problem generators, that is, based on chosen groups of initial variables, which values are randomly selected each time the MATLAB applications are run. Solutions of the cycle problems, which include thermodynamic cycles plotted in p–h, T–s, and p–v diagrams, and thermodynamic properties of each state of the cycle, are shown when students want to check their calculations. Moreover, the applications allow exporting initial data and solutions to an MS Excel file. The usability and learning experience of the applications were evaluated through anonymous surveys to students and the feedback of the academic staff involved in the course. The main problem, that the students referred, to was the utilization of the MATLAB applications that they considered it was not straightforward. The students believed that the utilization of these computer applications represented a significant improvement in teaching (70%) and expressed their interest in having similar materials in other degree courses (75%). After implementing the computer applications, the academic results showed an increase of ca. 16% in the pass rate., Depto. de Ingeniería Química y de Materiales, Fac. de Ciencias Químicas, TRUE, pub, Descuento UCM

- Abstract
This article presents a corpus-assisted analysis of the rhetoric employed in the political tweets of Lauren Boebert and Isabel Díaz-Ayuso on the micro-blogging site X (formerly Twitter). This study adopts the analytical framework Appraisal Theory (Martin & White, 2005), to explore how these politicians utilize negativity as a strategic tool to discredit and weaken their adversaries. The research identifies key motifs and evaluative strategies within their tweets, illustrating the role of negativity in political discourse. Findings reveal that both politicians direct their negativity toward their political rivals, viz., presidents Joe Biden and Pedro Sánchez, while channeling it towards immigrants and independentist parties. Amongst the evaluative resources most commonly deployed, Lauren Boebert and Isabel Díaz-Ayuso utilize inscribed negative judgments of propriety and veracity to accuse their rivals based on their lack of morality and truthfulness regarding various policy issues. The qualitative study has also revealed that politicians present their stances through monoglossic formulations that leave no room for argumentation and debate. This idea reinforces that even if their negativity is not intended as a polarizing agent, it may affect the potential electorate. This study contributes to understanding the dynamics of online political communication, highlighting the implications of negativity in shaping public opinion and political narratives.

- Abstract
The relationship between the significant loss of a loved one and alcoholism has minimized the implications on coping mechanisms to generate healthy behaviors. This article is based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with men between the ages of 30 and 70, with more than 10 years in Alcoholics Anonymous in the State of Tamaulipas, Mexico. The objective was to reflect on the meanings of the significant loss of a loved one and alcoholism. In the search for meaning, it is explained that a factor that leads to alcoholism is not a single significant loss of loved ones, but also an accumulation of material and non-material losses, limited resources were reflected to face the losses, the relationship between the loss significant with alcoholism was mediated by two main aspects, beliefs about the effects that alcohol consumption produces as ways of escaping from reality and the influence of the family at the beginning of alcohol consumption. On the other hand, the presence of the spiritual, the conscience and the emotions that they experience during their mourning process and alcoholism, led them to identify the problem of addiction, which allowed them to influence the rehabilitation process., A relação entre a perda significativa de um ente querido e o alcoolismo tem minimizado as implicações nos mecanismos de enfrentamento para gerar comportamentos saudáveis.

- Abstract
Due to cultural and social diversity, there are groups of people who depend on media accessibility services in order to consume audiovisual products because of their physical impairments, one of these services being audio description for the blind and visually impaired people (AD). The aim of this paper is to provide an approach to how humour and cultural aspects travel in audiovisual comedies, and their influence on how audio described scripts are produced in different countries. For this purpose, we will carry out a corpus analysis comparing the Spanish and the American AD versions of the original comedy film Campeones (Javier Fesser 2018) and its remake Champions (Bobby Farrelly 2023). The main findings of this descriptive study suggest that the AD practice of humorous audiovisual texts in a multicultural context is indeed a complex issue that could be addressed by Relevance Theory (Sperber & Wilson 1986), as suggested by Martínez Sierra (2009), although further research is needed.
