In this work, we demonstrate that amorphous and porous molybdenum silicate microspheres are highly active catalysts for heterogeneous propylene metathesis. Homogeneous molybdenum silicate microspheres and aluminum-doped molybdenum silicate microspheres were synthesized via a nonaqueous condensation of a hybrid molybdenum biphenyldicarboxylate-based precursor solution with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane. The as-prepared hybrid metallosilicate products were calcined at 500 °C to obtain amorphous and porous molybdenum silicate and aluminum-doped molybdenum silicate microspheres with highly dispersed molybdate species inserted into the silicate matrix. These catalysts contain mainly highly dispersed MoOx species, which possess high catalytic activity in heterogeneous propylene metathesis to ethylene and butene. Compared to conventional silica-supported MoOx catalysts prepared via incipient wetness impregnation (MoIWI), the microspheres with low Mo content (1.5-3.6 wt %) exhibited nearly 2 orders of magnitude higher steady-state propylene metathesis rates at 200 °C, approaching site time yields of 0.11 s-1

The development of technologies to recycle polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), globally the two most produced polymers, is critical to increase plastic circularity. Here, we show that 5 wt % cobalt supported on ZSM-5 zeolite catalyzes the solvent-free hydrogenolysis of PE and PP into propane with weight-based selectivity in the gas phase over 80 wt % after 20 h at 523 K and 40 bar H2. This catalyst significantly reduces the formation of undesired CH4 (≤5 wt %), a product which is favored when using bulk cobalt oxide or cobalt nanoparticles supported on other carriers (selectivity ≤95 wt %). The superior performance of Co/ZSM-5 is attributed to the stabilization of dispersed oxidic cobalt nanoparticles by the zeolite support, preventing further reduction to metallic species that appear to catalyze CH4 generation. While ZSM-5 is also active for propane formation at 523 K, the presence of Co promotes stability and selectivity. After optimizing the metal loading, it was demonstrated that 10 wt % Co/ZSM-5 can selectively catalyze the hydrogenolysis of low-density PE (LDPE), mixtures of LDPE and PP, as well as postconsumer PE, showcasing the effectiveness of this technology to upcycle realistic plastic waste. Cobalt supported on zeolites FAU, MOR, and BEA were also effective catalysts for C2-C4 hydrocarbon formation and revealed that the framework topology provides a handle to tune gas-phase selectivity.

Distinctive local crystallographic ordering of the CHA/AEI intergrowths was revealed at the nanoscale level using integrated differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (iDPC STEM). These novel CHA/AEI materials have been tested for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx, presenting an outstanding catalytic performance and hydrothermal stability, even surpassing the performance of the well-established commercial CHA-type catalyst. This methodology opens the possibility for synthetizing new zeolite intergrowths with more complex structures and unique catalytic properties.

Hydrogen-free reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) is a promising method to extract and depolymerize lignin from native biomass without the use of external hydrogen gas. Here, we show that Pt/C and Pd/C achieve comparable monomer yields regardless of hydrogen pressure, whereas Ru/C and Ni/C show lower yields under H2-free conditions. Ru/C and Ni/C primarily perform hydrodeoxygenation regardless of the hydrogen pressure, but Pt/C and Pd/C demonstrated the ability to form both ethyl products from dehydrogenation and propanol products through hydrogenation depending on the presence of external H2. Adding water to the solvent increased HDO selectivity to propyl products for both Pt/C and Pd/C. Monomer yields from poplar RCF showed similar trends in yield and selectivity to reactions with the model compound coniferyl alcohol, suggesting that H2-free RCF performance is dictated by the stabilization rate of reactive monomer intermediates.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for a wide range of applications given their chemical stability and structural tunability. Most traditional MOF synthesis methods use batch reactors with intrinsic inefficiencies during scale-up that negatively impact process productivity. Here, we report a low-cost and energy-efficient continuous manufacturing process for MOF-808—a Zr-MOF widely studied as a catalyst and adsorbent in industrially important processes—using flow-through reactors that increase process yields and minimize solvent use compared to batch processes. The flow platform allowed us to investigate the influence of several synthesis parameters, including residence time, linker concentration, and volumetric ratio of modulator and solvent on the crystallization process. Under optimal conditions, the N,N-dimethylformamide solvent and formic acid modulator volumetric amounts were decreased by 84% and 67%, respectively, and resulted in an increase in productivity (defined in units of kgMOF m−3 day−1) by two orders of magnitude with similar yields, compared to established batch synthesis methods. A process engineering assessment based on laboratory-scale synthesis routes was performed to compare energy and cost savings for flow and batch workflows, indicating that solvent use was the largest contributor to the overall cost. The methodology presented in this work opens new pathways for critical assessment and optimization of continuous manufacturing routes on a lab-scale environment, which serve as a preliminary step for the transition to more efficient MOF synthesis routes at the industrial scale.

Zeolites are inorganic materials with wide industrial applications due to their topological diversity. Tailoring confinement effects in zeolite pores, for instance by crystallizing intergrown frameworks, can improve their catalytic and transport properties, but controlling zeolite crystallization often relies on heuristics. In this work, we use computational simulations and data mining to design organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) to favor the synthesis of intergrown zeolites. First, we propose design principles to identify OSDAs which are selective toward both end members of the disordered structure. Then, we mine a database of hundreds of thousands of zeolite-OSDA pairs and downselect OSDA candidates to synthesize known intergrowth zeolites such as CHA/AFX, MTT/TON, and BEC/ISV. The computationally designed OSDAs balance phase competition metrics and shape selectivity toward the frameworks, thus bypassing expensive dual-OSDA approaches typically used in the synthesis of intergrowths. Finally, we propose potential OSDAs to obtain hypothesized disordered frameworks such as AEI/SAV. This work may accelerate zeolite discovery through data-driven synthesis optimization and design.

The selective incorporation of isolated framework Lewis acid sites at specific crystallographic positions in high-silica zeolites was achieved by applying a rationalized post-synthetic grafting methodology. The removal of framework Ge atoms from a Ge-BEC zeolite with low concentrations of Ge in the framework (Si/Ge ∼ 150) followed by grafting allows the synthesis of Sn-BEC zeolites with Sn atoms positionally biased into the double-4-ring (D4R) crystallographic positions of the BEC framework. Spectroscopic characterization using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) coupled with theoretical calculations revealed that Sn atoms preferentially form open Sn sites in the D4R of Sn-BEC. This observation was supported by IR spectra of adsorbed deuterated acetonitrile (CD3CN), a known titrant of Sn sites in zeolites. The catalytic implications of selective incorporation of open Sn sites in Sn-BEC were probed using the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley-Oppenauer (MPVO) reaction. Although the MPVO turnover rates normalized by the total number of open Sn sites were comparable on Sn-BEC and a conventional Sn-Beta catalyst synthesized in fluoride media (Sn-Beta(F)), Sn-BEC demonstrated higher per gram reaction rates because of its larger fraction of open sites compared to Sn-Beta(F). These results highlight the advantage of placing active sites in targeted locations within a zeolite structure. The methodology presented here to selectively place catalytic active sites via sacrificial heteroatoms, such as Ge, can be generalized for the design of many other tetrahedrally-coordinated metal-containing zeolites. Large oriented electric fields spontaneously arise at all solid-liquid interfaces via the exchange of ions and/or electrons with the solution. Although intrinsic electric fields are known to play an important role in molecular and biological catalysis, the role of spontaneous polarization in heterogeneous thermocatalysis remains unclear because the catalysts employed are typically disconnected from an external circuit, which makes it difficult to monitor or control the degree of electrical polarization of the surface. Here, we address this knowledge gap by developing general methods for wirelessly monitoring and controlling spontaneous electrical polarization at conductive catalysts dispersed in liquid media. By combining electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements, we demonstrate that proton and electron transfer from solution controllably, spontaneously, and wirelessly polarize Pt surfaces during thermochemical catalysis. We employ liquid-phase ethylene hydrogenation on a Pt/C catalyst as a thermochemical probe reaction and observe that the rate of this nonpolar hydrogenation reaction is significantly influenced by spontaneous electric fields generated by both interfacial proton transfer in water and interfacial electron transfer from organometallic redox buffers in a polar aprotic ortho-difluorobenzene solvent. Across these vastly disparate reaction media, we observe quantitatively similar scaling of ethylene hydrogenation rates with the Pt open-circuit electrochemical potential (E OCP). These results isolate the role of interfacial electrostatic effects from medium-specific chemical interactions and establish that spontaneous interfacial electric fields play a critical role in liquid-phase heterogeneous catalysis. Consequently, E OCP-a generally overlooked parameter in heterogeneous catalysis-warrants consideration in mechanistic studies of thermochemical reactions at solid-liquid interfaces, alongside chemical factors such as temperature, reactant activities

The rates of catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane and CO are 4 and 20 times higher, respectively, with Cu supported on a cerium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) than on the structurally analogous zirconium material. Both Ce- and Zr-based copper catalysts feature uncommon three-coordinate CuII sites bearing different nuclearities, as determined by Cu K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. These results offer molecular-level understanding of the metal-support interface in MOF catalysts and establish correlations with the more established literature on zirconia- and ceria-supported heterogeneous catalysis.
