Abstract

This article reviews efforts to build a new type of quantum device, which combines an ensemble of electronic spins with long coherence times, and a small-scale superconducting quantum processor. The goal is to store over long times arbitrary qubit states in orthogonal collective modes of the spin-ensemble, and to retrieve them on-demand. We first present the protocol devised for such a multi-mode quantum memory. We then describe a series of experimental results using NV (as in nitrogen vacancy) center spins in diamond, which demonstrate its main building blocks: the transfer of arbitrary quantum states from a qubit into the spin ensemble, and the multi-mode retrieval of classical microwave pulses down to the single-photon level with a Hahn-echo like sequence. A reset of the spin memory is implemented in-between two successive sequences using optical repumping of the spins.

Abstract

International audience; The control and stabilisation of the charge state of nitrogen‐vacancy centres in diamond is an important issue for the achievement of reliable processing of spin‐based quantum information. The effect of phosphorous and boron doping of diamond on the charge state of nitrogen‐vacancy (NV) centres is shown here. Ensembles of NV centres are produced at a depth of 60 nm in ultrapure diamond by implantation of nitrogen ions. Overlapping with the NV ensembles, donor and acceptor doped regions of different doping levels are prepared by ion implantation of phosphorus and boron followed by annealing in vacuum at 1500 °C. We show how the charge state of NV centres is controlled by the presence of phosphorous or boron atoms in their neighbourhood. For the lowest doping level, spectral measurements on the ensemble of NV centres reveal a higher amount of NV0 in the case of boron and a higher amount of NV− in the case of phosphorus, as compared with undoped regions. This behaviour is strengthened when the doping level is increased. Interestingly, the charge state control of native silicon‐vacancy centres is also evidenced. Finally, we discuss the role of the surface termination of diamond on the average charge state of the NV ensemble (still dominant even at a depth of 60 nm) and confirm that the surface 2D‐hole‐gas (H‐termination) can be compensated by nitrogen itself.

International audience; The finding of nonlinear nanometric-sized probes is of key importance for the development of nonlinear microscopy in nanosciences and biology. We isolate nonlinear KTiOPO4 nanocrystals with remarkable photostability in second-harmonic generation under femtosecond infrared laser light excitation. Their size distribution is determined using dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy. With both polarization analysis and defocused imaging of the emitted second-harmonic field, we also extract the Euler angles of the crystalline axes of a single nanocrystal. These sub-wavelength particles can find application as near-field vectorial probes

Abstract

The subject of this work is the study of Quantum Non-Demolition (QND) Measurements - in Optics. We show, both theoretically and experimentally, that such measurements can be performed using a non-linear coupling between two light beams. This interaction is obtained with a two-photon transition, inside a sodium atomic beam. The principle of this experiment is to use the crossed-phase modulation (crossed-Kerr effect), so as to transfer non-destructively the quantum intensity fluctuations of a laser beam, taken as the "signal", to the phase fluctuations of another beam, used as the "meter". The non-linear medium is located in a cavity. It is then possible to enhance the coupling between the two bearns, and also to use the cavity as an interferometric detector, which allows one to read out the phase fluctuations of the meter beam. The QND measurement can be characterized by simple parameters, which are directly measured. The experimental results that we obtained clearly show that our set-up has an actual efficiency above the quantum limit, appearing in standard coupling devices such as a beamsplitter. An analysis of a two-photon double-beam bistable device, in the dispersive and highfinesse limits, is also presented. The experimental results are compared with a simple crossedphase modulation model, and also with a numerical solution of the interaction between the cavity fields and three-level atoms, using the Optical Bloch Equations. Finally, we analyze several new quantum noise reduction effects, allowed by this system.; Le sujet de ce mémoire est l'étude de mesures Quantiques Non-Destructives (mesures QND) en Optique. Nous montrons, théoriquement et expérimentalement, qu'une telle mesure peut être réalisée en couplant deux faisceaux lumineux dans un milieu non-linéaire, ici une transition à deux photons dans un jet atomique de sodium. Le principe fondamental est d'utiliser une modulation de phase croisée (effet Kerr croisé) : les fluctuations quantiques d'intensité d'un faisceau laser, choisi comme "signal", peuvent alors être transférées nondestructivement sur les fluctuations de phase d'un autre faisceau, choisi comme "mesure". La perturbation due à la mesure apparaît sur le signal, sous la forme d'une augmentation de son bruit de phase. Afin d'augmenter le couplage entre les deux faisceaux, le milieu non-linéaire est placé dans une cavité optique. Cette configuration joue également le rôle de détection interféromètrique, permettant la mesure de l'information apparue sur les fluctuations de phase du faisceau de mesure. La mesure QND peut être caractérisée à l'aide de paramètres simples, directement mesurables. Les résultats obtenus expérimentalement montrent une amélioration fondamentale, par rapport aux performances de tout coupleur standard, tel qu'une simple lame semitransparente. Enfin, nous présentons une analyse d'un bistable à deux photons, couplant deux modes distincts du champ. Les résultats expérimentaux sont comparés avec le moàèle correspondant à la modulation de phase croisée, ainsi qu'A une solution numérique de l'interaction entre les champs intra-cavité et les atomes à trois niveaux, décntes par les Equations de Bloch Optiques. Nous montrons théoriquement qu'un tel système permet de prédire plusieurs effets de réduction des fluctuations quantiques.

Abstract

The efficiency of an optical quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement can be characterized using three criteria, which describe respectively the quality of the quantum measurement, the non-destruction of the signal, and the conditional variance of the output signal beam, given the output meter beam (quantum-state-preparation criterion). Quantitative limits can be defined with respect to these criteria, delimiting "classical" and "quantum" domains of operation. We describe the implementation of two experiments which fulfill these criteria, using either three-level atoms inside a doubly-resonant optical cavity, or semiconductors emitters and receivers.
