IMMUNOELECTROPHORESIS was applied for cross-wise checking of the different stages in the life cycle of schistosoma mansoni with extracts of hepato-pancreas from its intermediate host snails Biomphalaria glabrata and Biomphalaria alexandrina. Only few fractions were common to non infected snail organ and parasite development stage, while more crossreactions were detected with infected snail hepato - pancreas.

Cervical mucus was collected from 24 normal (control) women, and 45 cases fitted with Cu T200 IUDs. Glucose concentration was measured by spectrophotometry before and after insertion of the IUDs. In the control group, glucose concentration at midcycle was 1.802 +or- 0.235 mg/gm wet weight cervical mucus. Pre- and postinsertion mean values in Cu T200 users were 0.746 +or- 0.149 mg/gm and 0.487 +or- 0.045 mg/gm of mucus respectively. This decrease in mucus glucose concentration in Cu T200 users may be a factor by which this device affects sperm migration at the cervical level.

127 breast scans were performed on 83 female patients using technetium-99m diphosphonate. 46 out of 48 patients with breast cancer had positive breast scans manifested by a focal increased uptake in 37 patients and a diffuse increased uptake in the remaining 9 patients. Benign breast lesions such as fibrocystic disease, fibroadenoma and fat necrosis may also concentrate the radioactive agent in a focal or a diffuse pattern. So breast scanning is a sensitive though nonspecific modality to detect malignant breast lesions and it is worthwhile performing it on all women referred for bone scan.

A total of 65 cases showing asymmetry of the pelvic ureters of greater than 1.4 cm for which no cause could be identified are presented. Only one was a male. The right ureter was situated more medially in 61 of the 64 females. Comparison of the characteristics of these patients with 51 females with symmetrical pelvic ureters revealed no differences except for a significantly more frequent left-sided position of the uterus in the asymmetrical group. Gross medial displacement of the right ureter in a female probably represents a normal variant in a large majority of patients.

A case of diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the heart discovered incidentally during life is reported. Resection of the tumor was impossible at operation. Two similar cases were found in the literature. Radation therapy is suggested, and the importance of a simple blood pool scan in the investigation of paracardiac masses is stressed.

IMMUNOELECTROPHORESIS was used for studies on immunological cross-reactions between both Schistosoma mansoni (S. m.) intermediate host snails Biomphalaria glabrata and Biomphalaria alexandrina. The preparation of antigens and their corresponding antisera from hepato-pancreas of S. m. infected and non infected snails was described as the homologous reactions of both snails either infected or non infected were rather similar, close immunological relationship between B. glabrata and B. alexandrina could be deduced.

The CT findings in 20 patients with pulmonary hydatid disease were reviewed. Sixty-four intrapulmonary cysts were imaged, 22% of which were ruptured or complicated. Simple hydatid cysts and water-density lung cysts of other etiology may have a similar CT appearance; however, the demonstration of the cystic nature of a lung lesion in endemic areas makes hydatid disease the primary consideration. Pathognomonic features in ruptured or complicated hydatid cysts that can be visualized better by CT than by conventional radiography include detached or collapsed endocyst membrane(s), collapsed daughter cyst membranes, and intact daughter cysts.

A case of traumatic bronchobiliary fistula is presented. It is a rare complication of liver injuries. The diagnosis can be made on the observation of biliptysis. Technetium 99m EHIDA cholescintigraphy is of great help in demonstrating the fistulous tract in these patients for early diagnosis and planning for surgical approach.
