Aims In recent years, stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) has radically changed, with increasing use of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs). Contemporary European data on AF thromboprophylaxis are needed. Methods and results We report 1-year follow-up data from the EURObservational Research Programme in Atrial Fibrillation (EORP-AF) General Long-Term Registry. Outcomes were assessed according to antithrombotic therapy. At 1-year follow-up, 9663 (88.0%) patients had available data for analysis: 586 (6.1%) were not treated with any antithrombotic; 681 (7.0%) with antiplatelets only; 4066 (42.1%) with vitamin K antagonist (VKA) only; 3167 (32.8%) with NOACs only; and 1163 (12.0%) with antiplatelet and oral anticoagulant. At 1-year follow-up, there was a low rate of stroke (0.7%) and any thromboembolic event (TE) (1.2%), while haemorrhagic events occurred in 222 patients (2.3%). Cardiovascular (CV) death and all-cause death occurred in 3.9% and 5.2% of patients, respectively. Cumulative survival for all the three main outcomes considered was highest amongst patients treated only with NOACs (P Conclusion The 1-year follow-up of EORP-AF General Long-Term Registry reported a low occurrence of thromboembolic and haemorrhagic events, although mortality was high. Both VKA and NOACs were associated with a lower risk of all main adverse outcomes. All treatments were associated with a lower risk for CV death and all-cause death.

- Abstract
The Grunehogna Craton (GC) in the Atlantic sector of East Antarctica is situated in western Dronning Maud Land between approximately 2 and 15°W. The GC was part of or adjacent to the Archaean Kalahari Craton of southern Africa and became attached to Antarctica during the Jurassic breakup of Gondwana. We report on magnetotelluric (MT) measurements from 20 sites in the vicinity of Neumayer III research station, which is located on the Ekström Ice Shelf (EIS) at the eastern coast of the Weddell Sea. The MT data was collected using broad band instruments with an average site spacing of 5 km. Contrary to sea ice, ice shelves originate from a glacier or ice sheet that flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface. Therefore ice shelves are firmly attached to the land masses and the EIS overlays in parts the GC. The MT data, particularly the inductions vectors, clearly mark the transition from areas which are underlain by sea water and where the ice is directly grounded on the craton. The MT sites located on the GC show generally high resistivity, which can be expected for Archean rocks.

Article Subject - Abstract
Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a frequent and severe complication in subjects receiving iodinated contrast media for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Several preventive strategies were evaluated in the past. Recent clinical studies and meta-analyses delivered some new aspects on preventive measures used in the past and present. We will discuss all pharmacological and nonpharmacological procedures. Finally, we will suggest individualized recommendations for CIN prevention.

This editorial refers to ‘Evaluation of SAMe-TT2R2 risk score for predicting the quality of anticoagulation control in a real-world cohort of patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation on vitamin-K antagonists’ by M. R.R.-Y. Abumuaileq et al. , doi:10.1093/europace/euu353. Maintaining the therapeutic range in patients treated with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) had always been challenging whilst the potential consequences of deviating from the optimal average time in therapeutic range(TTR) are deleterious in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), given the risk for thromboembolic and bleeding events.1,2 Various clinical decision-making tools have been developed to help decision-making in the management of AF patients. In 2013, a new score—with the acronym SAMe-TT2R2—was proposed to help identify those patients who were likely to have a propensity to poor INR control (as reflected by average time in the therapeutic range [TTR] 2).3 This score was derived from a trial cohort and thus independent validation in ‘real-world’ AF cohorts would be needed. In the current issue of EP-Europace , Abumaileq et al. 4 performed a retrospective analysis of a cohort of outpatients with non-valvular AF and found that SAMe-TT2R2 could indeed represented a useful clinical tool to identify a poor quality of anticoagulation control with VKAs. The predictive ability of SAMe-TT2R2 was acceptable for identifying low TTR and improved when integrated with other clinical characteristics. A strong relationship …

- Abstract
The sources for the magnetotelluric method are naturally occurring electromagnetic field variations. Electromagnetic currents are excited over a wide frequency range in the earth’s ionosphere by solar activity and global lighting discharges. While these source are available everywhere on earth and at all times, their signal strength varies considerably. The so-called remote-reference technique is an effective way to improve magnetotelluric data quality by referencing the electromagnetic fields recorded at a local site to simultaneously recorded, undisturbed fields at a remote site. The remote reference approach has become standard for magnetotelluric field work, particularly in areas with high levels of man-made electromagnetic noise; i.e. almost everywhere in central Europe. Identifying a suitable location for a clean remote site is difficult and time-consuming. Maintaining such a site in addition to normal field operations is expensive and logistically challenging. A permanently installed reference station simplifies MT measurements considerably. The radius for which source fields are coherent depends mostly on the frequency content of the signals and the latitude of observations. According to our own tests, signals are coherent at frequencies of up to 10 kHz over distances of 1000 km. After a reconnaissance operation during which several locations all over Germany were tested, we could eventually identify an urban forest near the town of Wittstock in northern Germany as a suitable location for a reference station. A preliminary installation of the reference station was accomplished by mid-2010. The permanent installation in a wooden hut and operating with a range of sensors and sampling rates is available since November 2010. Meanwhile the data of the Wittstock site have been used very successfully to re-process a number of magnetotelluric stations in Germany. This report describes the installation, the type of sensors and the recorded data sets, which are freely available on request. - Abstract
We present a deep electrical resistivity image from the passive continental margin in Namibia. The approximately 700 km long magnetotelluric profile follows the Walvis Ridge offshore, continues onshore across the Kaoko Mobile Belt and reaches onto the Congo Craton. Two-dimensional inversion reveals moderately resistive material offshore, atypically low for oceanic lithosphere, reaching depths of 15–20 km. Such moderate resistivities are consistent with seismic P wave velocity models, which suggest up to 35 km thick crust. The Neoproterozoic rocks of the Kaoko Mobile Belt are resistive, but NNW-striking major shear-zones are imaged as subvertical, conductive structures in the upper and middle crust. Since the geophysical imprint of the shear zones is intact, opening of the South Atlantic in the Cretaceous did not alter the middle crust. The transition into the cratonic region coincides with a deepening of the high-resistive material to depths of more than 60 km.

MYOCARDIAL infarction ,AUTOPHAGY - Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs frequently in hospitals worldwide, but the therapeutic options are limited. Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects more and more people around the globe. The disease worsens the prognosis of AKI even further. In recent years, cell-based therapies have increasingly been applied in experimental AKI. The aim of the study was to utilize two established autophagy inducers for pharmacological preconditioning of so-called proangiogenic cells (PACs) in PAC treatment of diabetic AKI. Insulin-dependent DM was induced in male C57/Bl6N mice by intraperitoneal injections of streptozotocine. Six weeks later, animals underwent bilateral renal ischemia for 45 min, followed by intravenous injections of either native or zVAD (benzyloxycarbonyl-Val-Ala-Asp-fluoro-methylketone)- or Z-Leu-Leu-Leu-al (MG132)-pretreated syngeneic murine PACs. Mice were analyzed 48 h (short term) and 6 wk (long term) later, respectively. DM worsened postischemic AKI, and PAC preconditioning with zVAD and MG132 resulted in a further decline of excretory kidney function. Injection of native PACs reduced fibrosis in nondiabetic mice, but cell preconditioning promoted interstitial matrix accumulation significantly. Both substances aggravated endothelial-tomesenchymal transition (EndoMT) under diabetic conditions; these effects occurred either exclusively in the short (zVAD) or in the short and long term (MG132). Preconditioned cells stimulated the autophagocytic flux in intrarenal endothelial cells, and all experimental groups displayed increased endothelial abundances of senescenceassociated β-galactosidase, a marker of premature cell senescence. Pharmacological autophagy activation may not serve as an effective strategy for improving PAC competence in diabetic AKI in general. On the contrary, several outcome parameters (excretory function, fibrosis, EndoMT) may even be worsened. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Production from oil fields requires the monitoring of hydrocarbon saturation in the reservoir. In the Bockstedt oil field there exists a substantial difference in resistivity between an oil-filled (approximately 100-16 Ω·m) and a brine-filled (0.6 Ω·m) reservoir. Controlledsource electromagnetics (CSEM) is chosen to test whether sufficient resistivity differences can be observed by means of surface measurements. The target is a Lower Cretaceous clastic interval at an approximate depth of 1200 m. Forward modeling demonstrates that the expected resistivity changes at reservoir level cannot be resolved with a survey setup of only surface electrical sources and sensors. Therefore a borehole-to-surface technique has been developed, whereby the metal casing of an abandoned production well serves as an input electrode. CSEM surveys were acquired in 2014 and 2015 as a time-lapse baseline and monitor for both horizontal electric (Ex and Ey) components. A four-transmitter and 25-receiver configuration was deployed for these surveys. Forward modeling indicates that induction effects from metal objects, such as casings of production wells, cannot be ignored in the electromagnetics (EM) modeling. A shallow observation well was drilled in 2015 to make the collection of vertical electric field (Ez) data sets possible. A new downhole sensor was developed for this purpose. Numerical simulations suggest Ez data are more sensitive to the anticipated resistivity changes in the reservoir. Because Ez is two orders of magnitude smaller than the horizontal components, verticality is of great importance to avoid masking the Ez signal by interference from unwanted horizontal components. Similar acquisition parameters are adopted for 2014 baseline and 2015 monitor surveys to facilitate the comparisons. The repeatability is good, generating comparable response functions. A new, computationally efficient approach considers the effect of the metal casings, and is implemented in the 3D modeling and inversion codes. Preliminary resistivity models obtained from 3D CSEM inversion explain the observed data, and are in agreement with results from a 3D-seismic survey and resistivity logs in the calibration wells. Incorporation of the metal casings in the EM-modeling scheme increases the lateral continuity of inverted resistivity bodies. In November 2016, a new time-lapse acquisition campaign was undertaken to collect a second Ex/Ey monitor and the first monitor survey for the Ez component. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
