Zombie companies can be classified as being nonprofitable, having low productivity and being ten years old or over; these businesses continue to exist due to the support of banks and governments. This paper aims to understand the impact of these types of firms on the investment, employment growth and labour productivity of healthy companies from the wholesale and retail trade and the hospitality sector during the period 2011-2018. The data obtained indicate that the prevalence of zombie companies in Portugal (in the sectors under study) is higher in periods of economic crisis and that most of them are old and large companies, especially in the hotel industry sector. By using panel data models with fixed effects, our investigation concludes that zombie firms negatively affect how healthy companies are run, because they reduce the latter’s investment expenditure and workforce productivity.

Marketing - Abstract
PurposeThe digital revolution has changed consumer–service provider interaction, spawning a new generation of FinTech. This paper analyzes consumers' reactions to artificial intelligence (AI) (vs human) decisions.Design/methodology/approachThe authors tested their predictions by conducting two experimental studies with FinTech consumers (n = 503).FindingsThe results reveal that consumers' responses to AI (vs human) credit decisions depend on the type of credit product. For personal loans, the rejection by an AI provider triggers higher levels of satisfaction compared to a credit analyst. This effect is explained via the perceived role congruity. In addition, the findings reveal that consumers’ rejection sensitivity determines how they perceive financial services role congruity.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this research is the first to jointly examine AI (vs human) credit decisions in FinTech and role congruity, extending prior research in the field.

Emerging Science Journal, 7(2), 313-327. https://doi.org/10.28991/ESJ-2023-07-02-01 --- Funding: This paper received support from the Management of Information Research Center (MagIC), project UIDB/04152/2020, and from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT Portugal), project DSAIPA/DS/0113/2019. Despite the recent developments in AI, ethical questions arise when consumers contemplate how their data is being treated. This paper develops a conceptual model building on the theory of acceptance, risk, trust, and attitudes towards AI to understand the drivers that lead consumers to accept AI, considering consumers' ethical concerns. The model was empirically tested with 200 consumers of AI marketing services. The findings reveal that perceived risk significantly impacts attitudes toward AI, ethical concerns, and perceived trust and suggest a significant association between perceived risk, ethical concerns, and social norms. This research provides important theoretical and managerial implications for the ethical aspects of AI in marketing by highlighting the ethical and moral questions surrounding AI's acceptance. publishersversion published

There has been an increasing growth of the distilled beverages consumption in Portugal, mostly among young generations. Recent studies proved young consumers drink almost four times more vodka than the average Portuguese consumer. The present research focuses on understanding consumer behaviour in the vodka market through interviews with market experts and vodka consumers and conducting structured surveys. Applying market research techniques such as maps and conjoint analysis, it was possible to understand how consumers perceive some existing brands – Eristoff, Smirnoff, Misss, Grey Goose, Cirôc and Absolut -, their preferences regarding product features and also to identify the main consumer decision making styles. It was verified that quality is associated with price, being the two most important attributes in the consumer decision-making of vodka and that although Portuguese vodka consumers are essentially price driven, they have minimum standards for quality. In addition, Cirôc and Grey Goose were perceived as the highest quality and sophisticated brands, while Eristoff and Absolut are more associated to excitement and enthusiasm.

Genome sequences from evolving infectious pathogens allow quantification of case introductions and local transmission dynamics. We sequenced 11,357 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) genomes from Switzerland in 2020—the sixth largest effort globally. Using a representative subset of these data, we estimated viral introductions to Switzerland and their persistence over the course of 2020. We contrasted these estimates with simple null models representing the absence of certain public health measures. We show that Switzerland’s border closures decoupled case introductions from incidence in neighboring countries. Under a simple model, we estimate an 86 to 98% reduction in introductions during Switzerland’s strictest border closures. Furthermore, the Swiss 2020 partial lockdown roughly halved the time for sampled introductions to die out. Last, we quantified local transmission dynamics once introductions into Switzerland occurred using a phylodynamic model. We found that transmission slowed 35 to 63% upon outbreak detection in summer 2020 but not in fall. This finding may indicate successful contact tracing over summer before overburdening in fall. The study highlights the added value of genome sequencing data for understanding transmission dynamics.

The present research aims to overcome the restricted concept of entrepreneurship linked to the practice of creating companies, to focus on entrepreneurial potential, considering the relevance of higher education, in particular University education. For its framework, a theoretical methodological (re)innovation of the concept of entrepreneurship is proposed, based on a social sciences approach, especially from the contribution of sociology. The analytical dimensions are structured around the following areas: (i) educational dynamics with a focus on teaching-learning methodologies in entrepreneurship; ii) (re)configurations of graduates’ professional trajectories in order to highlight the range of socio-professional statuses assumed; (iii) development of social aspirations, namely the position occupied by entrepreneurship in the motivations, expectations, values, identity references and representations regarding the professional future. The methodological strategy includes an extensive cross-sectional diagnosis of social, organizational and educational conditions in order to understand and explain the students' entrepreneurial ‘mindset’ and an intensive longitudinal study of its implications for the construction of projects and professional paths. It is expected that the overall results of this research will contribute critically to the sociological debate, focusing on increasing the knowledge of the actors’ motivational structures, potentialities and critical factors present in the educational processes and their implications in the labour market. With an alternative proposal of the potential of entrepreneurship, one that has a multidimensional and relational nature, the aim is to contribute to a sociological perspective concerned with reflection and discussion about the consequences of entrepreneurial education and the requirements of employability. These will tend to be accompanied by processes of worsening fragmentation, uncertainty and precariousness of work and employment relations, and, at the limit, of social relations, to constitute one of the dominant features of the current generation of graduates., Esta dissertação foi financiada pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) através da concessão de uma bolsa de doutoramento (SFRH/BD/60807/2009) no âmbito do QREN – POPH – Tipologia 4.1 – Formação Avançada, comparticipado pelo Fundo Social Europeu e por fundos nacionais do MCTES.

Todo o processo teve o auxílio de metodologias de diversos artigos e dados estatísticos, destacando-se os elaborados por José Manuel Ferraz, José Manuel Sobral e Maria Luísa Lima., Due to the current pandemic that the whole world is experiencing, which unfortunately falls mainly on the economy, it is necessary to reflect on the similarities between pandemics to avoid in the present mistakes that were made in the past. The three pandemics under review - Spanish Flu, Swine Flu, and COVID-19 - take place in different periods, but nevertheless have similarities between them. The Spanish Flu began in 1918 and lasted until 1920. This pandemic claimed more than 50 million lives worldwide. In 2009, the world was shaken by Swine Flu, called the H1N1 Flu virus. One particularity of this flu is that, unlike a common flu, Swine Flu caused a higher number of deaths in young and middle-aged adults. The most recent pandemic, COVID-19 records, as of August 24, 2022, a total of 247 138 114 confirmed cases. In general, pandemics affect people, their ways of living and consequently the economy. The analysis of structural breaks in economic aggregates, through the Normal Distribution curve, allowed us to study the probability of breaks in the real variables GDP, Trade Balance, Trade Balance and Inflation. This dissertation entitled "The impact of major pandemics between 1900 and 2020 in globalized economies: the Portuguese case", was prepared as part of the master’s dissertation in Monetary, Banking and Financial Economics at the University of Minho. The main objective was to analyze the impacts of pandemics on the economy and what are the similarities between them. The whole process had the help of methodologies from several articles and statistical data, highlighting those prepared by José Manuel Ferraz, José Manuel Sobral and Maria Luísa Lima.

This article is an excerpt from research developed at the Professional Master's level in Science Teaching, characterized by a qualitative approach research, of the intervention research type, with the voluntary participation of seven Specialized Educational Service (SES) students, from a municipal school in Baixada Fluminense. In view of this, the objective of this article is to show a few didactic strategies in Science teaching, through the Science, Technology and Society (STS) approach, that were developed and that can be used by the SES teacher to teach science to students with disabilities, using the following resources: children's literature, games, videos and dialogue. In this way, the article brings the construction of the subjects' knowledge, which was based on the representation of their speech and subjectivity in the light of theoretical references of the STS approach and of special education, in the inclusive perspective. And, following the line of reasoning, some results are presented that show that the students had high self-esteem in front of themselves and in front of the group, the improvement of the organization and the processing of thought, the articulation and exposition of ideas, the improvement of the orality and the improvement of dialogicity with teachers and peers. Even so, the educational product affiliated with the research, a digital magazine entitled “Experiences in STS & Special Education”, confirms the teaching and learning possibilities of SES students, through the teaching of Science in STS, aiming at the development of skills and abilities aimed at a more critical citizen education.

Aracati, a municipality in the State of Ceará, is experiencing water shortages. The unpredictability of rainfall and a lack of management of these resources worsen water scarcity. The work diagnosed water availability in the municipality to aid municipal water planning. The secondary data was precipitation, drilling wells, and water bodies mapped in Google Earth Pro®. The municipality presents a severe drought and has a poor water-to-land ratio. The 19 operating wells intended for human use have a daily output estimate sufficient to supply water to 65% of the local population. A further 23 wells are inactive, contributing another 20% to the groundwater supply deficit. Concerning water quality, there is fresh water in 23% of the wells, saline water in 25%, and brackish water in 52% of the wells. Therefore, it is critical to focus on managing and supporting projects for the sustainable use of water resources. RESUMO Aracati, município do Estado do Ceará, apresenta problemas hídricos.

Linguistics and Language ,Language and Linguistics - Abstract
In this paper we compare dative ditransitive structures in nativized and nativizing urban varieties of Portuguese spoken in Angola, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe, using a corpus-based approach. It is shown that the expression of the Recipient exhibits considerable variation within and across these varieties, as well as at intraspeaker level. Despite the use of non-canonical patterns, namely prepositional structures with em and para and double object constructions, the canonical European Portuguese pattern with Case marker a is predominant in our data. Moreover, the pronominalized counterparts of these different realizations show much less variation and strong convergence toward dative clitic lhe(s). To account for the data, we propose a Larsonian VP-shell in which Recipients as extended DPs occur internally to a K(ase) projection whose functional head can be spelled out as a, em or para. Recipients in double object constructions, on the other hand, are treated as plain DPs which may pronominalize as dative clitics or, less commonly, as strong pronouns. Overall, our hypothesis weakens the role of language contact, which has often been assumed as a critical factor in the literature, but still allows for (individual) grammars that show evidence of being substrate-induced.

Background:\ud The pathophysiology of changes in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detected after a seizure is not fully understood.\ud \ud Objective:\ud To characterize and describe seizure‐induced changes detected by MRI.\ud \ud Animals:\ud Eighty‐one client‐owned dogs diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy.\ud \ud Methods:\ud Data collected retrospectively from medical records and included anatomical areas affected, T1‐, T2‐weighted and T2‐FLAIR (fluid‐attenuated inversion recovery) appearance, whether changes were unilateral or bilateral, symmetry, contrast enhancement, mass effect, and, gray and white matter distribution. Diffusion‐ and perfusion weighted maps were evaluated, if available.\ud \ud Results:\ud Seizure‐induced changes were T2‐hyperintense with no suppression of signal on FLAIR. Lesions were T1‐isointense (55/81) or hypointense (26/81), local mass effect (23/81) and contrast enhancement (12/81). The majority of changes were bilateral (71/81) and symmetrical (69/71). The most common areas affected were the hippocampus (39/81) cingulate gyrus (33/81), hippocampus and piriform lobes (32/81). Distribution analysis suggested concurrence between cingulate gyrus and pulvinar thalamic nuclei, the cingulate gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus, hippocampus and piriform lobe, and, hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus. Diffusion (DWI) characteristics were a mixed‐pattern of restricted, facilitated, and normal diffusion. Perfusion (PWI) showed either hypoperfusion (6/9) or hyperperfusion (3/9).\ud \ud Conclusions and Clinical Importance:\ud More areas, than previously reported, have been identified that could incur seizure‐induced changes. Similar to human literature, DWI and PWI changes have been identified that could reflect the underlying metabolic and vascular changes.

Acute noncompressive nucleus pulposus extrusion (ANNPE) is related to contusive spinal cord injuries, and dogs usually appear to be exercising vigorously at the time of onset. ANNPE has a characteristic peracute onset of clinical signs during exercise or following trauma, with non-progressive signs during the first 24 h and possibly signs of spinal shock. The main aim was to assess if the presence of spinal shock affects the neurorehabilitation outcomes of ANNPE dogs. This prospective controlled cohort clinical study was conducted at the Arrábida Rehabilitation Center. All of the dogs had T3–L3 injuries and were paraplegic/monoplegic with/without nociception, the study group (n = 14) included dogs with ANNPE spinal shock dogs, and the control group (n = 19) included ANNPE dogs without spinal shock. The study group was also evaluated using a new scale—the Spinal Shock Scale (SSS)—and both groups were under the same intensive neurorehabilitation protocol. Spinal shock was a negative factor for a successful outcome within less time. SSS scores > 4 required additional hospitalization days. The protocol was safe, tolerable, and feasible and accomplished 32% ambulation within 7 days, 29% in 14 days, and 29% in 30 days. The results were better than those obtained in previous studies—94% at 60 days—and 75% of the dogs without nociception recovered ambulation. Long-term follows-ups carried out 4 years later revealed a positive evolution.

To develop the first Ophthalmology joint guidelines with Paediatric Rheumatology with recommendations on the screening, monitoring and medical treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis (JIA-U), endorsed by the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology (SPO).A systematic literature review was conducted to include publications up to July 14th 2020, with no language restrictions, in order to include all the international position papers/guidelines concerning the medical management of JIA-U and randomised clinical trials assessing the efficacy and safety of medical treatment in this field. We searched through MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library. The Delphi modified technique to generate consensus was used. Preliminary evidence statements were subject to an anonymous agreement assessment and discussion process using an online survey, followed by further discussion and update at a national meeting. A draft of the manuscript with all recommendations was then circulated among all participants and suggestions were incorporated. The final version was again circulated before publication.Twenty-six recommendations were developed focusing on the following topics: general management (3), screening and follow-up of uveitis (4), treatment (17) and health education in JIA-U among patients and families (2).These guidelines were designed to support the shared medical management of patients with JIA-U and emphasize the need for a multidisciplinary approach between Ophthalmology and Paediatric Rheumatology regarding the comprehensive care of JIA-U. We acknowledge that updating these recommendations will be warranted in the future, as more evidence becomes available.juvenile idiopathic arthritis, uveitis, biological treatment, conventional immunosuppressive treatment, multidisciplinary management, guidelines, consensus, review, Delphi Technique.

Dysphagia is described as a highly relevant comorbidity of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, there is a scarcity of studies aiming at the characteristics and progression of dysphagia. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the specific characteristics, progression, and prevalence of dysphagia in AD. Methods: Publications were searched in the PubMed (MEDLINE), EBSCO, ScienceDirect, and BASE databases. Critical appraisal and evidence-level analysis were conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute and Effective Public Health Practice Project’s (EPHPP) tools. Results: A total of 26 studies were reviewed. Symptoms begin in the early stage of AD, as oral phase impairments, and progress to pharyngeal symptoms and swallowing apraxia in the later stages of AD. Dysphagia progresses, as AD, along a continuum, with severity depending on individual variability. There were no studies found on prevalence. Conclusions: Dysphagia is a complex and important comorbidity in AD that impacts the quality of life. No recent publications on prevalence may imply that is not being coded as a potential cause for pneumonia deaths in AD.

The synthesis and biological evaluation of novel guanidino sugars as isonucleoside analogs is described. 5-Guanidino xylofuranoses containing 3-O-saturated/unsaturated hydrocarbon or aromatic-containing moieties were accessed from 5-azido xylofuranoses via reduction followed by guanidinylation with N,N'-bis(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-N''-triflylguanidine. Molecules comprising novel types of isonucleosidic structures including 5-guanidino 3-O-methyl-branched N-benzyltriazole isonucleosides and a guanidinomethyltriazole 3'-O-dodecyl xylofuranos-5'-yl isonucleoside were accessed. The guanidinomethyltriazole derivative and a 3-O-dodecyl (N-Boc)guanidino xylofuranose were revealed as selective inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (K

We aimed to determine the impact of pre-operative isolation on postoperative pulmonary complications after elective surgery during the global SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. We performed an international prospective cohort study including patients undergoing elective surgery in October 2020. Isolation was defined as the period before surgery during which patients did not leave their house or receive visitors from outside their household. The primary outcome was postoperative pulmonary complications, adjusted in multivariable models for measured confounders. Pre-defined sub-group analyses were performed for the primary outcome. A total of 96,454 patients from 114 countries were included and overall, 26,948 (27.9%) patients isolated before surgery. Postoperative pulmonary complications were recorded in 1947 (2.0%) patients of which 227 (11.7%) were associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Patients who isolated pre-operatively were older, had more respiratory comorbidities and were more commonly from areas of high SARS-CoV-2 incidence and high-income countries. Although the overall rates of postoperative pulmonary complications were similar in those that isolated and those that did not (2.1% vs 2.0%, respectively), isolation was associated with higher rates of postoperative pulmonary complications after adjustment (adjusted OR 1.20, 95%CI 1.05–1.36, p=0.005). Sensitivity analyses revealed no further differences when patients were categorised by: pre-operative testing; use of COVID-19-free pathways; or community SARS-CoV-2 prevalence. The rate of postoperative pulmonary complications increased with periods of isolation longer than 3days, with an OR (95%CI) at 4–7days or ≥8days of 1.25 (1.04–1.48), p=0.015 and 1.31 (1.11–1.55), p=0.001, respectively. Isolation before elective surgery might be associated with a small but clinically important increased risk of postoperative pulmonary complications. Longer periods of isolation showed no reduction in the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications. These findings have significant implications for global provision of elective surgical care.

The aims of this study are the following: first, to document and validate the phenomenon, identifying a representative set of titles whose plot – or at least part of it – is related to the Middle Ages and, secondly, contextualize this corpus in terms of genre features, on the one hand, and thematic ones, on the other, by using a comparative method. Thethird and last aim is the main one: to put forward a “poetics of estrangement”, outlining six especially remarkable features from the selected set of medievalist fiction. The six main chapters of this project are dedicated to the study of a series of thematic and rhetoric elements that enable the definition of a set of conventions on the current practice of literary Medievalism. The chapter “The Mask of the Middle Ages and its Disfiguring Artifices” analyses the existence of a series of grotesque representations in the construction of the Middle Ages imaginary – related to an aesthetic of carnivalization –, which allows to substantiate the reader’s proximity/alienation strategies...

Background: Inflammatory brain diseases are relatively common causes of CNS disease in dogs and cats but its overall incidence in the veterinary species is currently unknown. They can be associated with infectious agents (such as bacteria, virus, protozoa and fungi) or autoimmune causes. Achieving a definitive diagnosis can be challenging in most cases, as this would require obtaining samples from the CNS for histological examination and that would pose high risks to the patient and is associated with significant financial cost. In practice, clinicians use a combination of clinical, imaging and laboratory test findings to achieve a presumptive diagnosis, so an in-depth understanding of the most common conditions is essential in order to plan appropriate diagnostic investigations. Aim of the article: This article reviews the latest knowledge on inflammatory brain diseases in companion animals, including current thoughts on aetiology, treatment options and prognostic factors.

In 208 children seeking medical care, the seropositivity rate of anti–SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies was 8.7%, suggesting an infection rate similar to that observed in adults but >100-fold the incidence of RT-PCR–confirmed pediatric cases. Compared with the gold-standard combined ELISA + immunofluorescence, the MEDsan IgG rapid diagnostic test performed accurately.

Introduction: Alcohol and tobacco consumption are two worrying factors in Public Health which bring huge personal, family, and social costs and limit people's quality of life. COVID19 pandemic may have changed the prevalence of these consumptions and the existence of computer records, such as the BI-CSP in Portugal, makes easier the data analysis in order to allow the creation of combat strategies. Thus, it was intended to study the evolution of the values of the indicators "MORB.199.01 FL - Proportion of patients with "chronic alcohol abuse" and "MORB.200.01 FL - Proportion of patients with "tobacco abuse" between 2016 and 2020.Methodology: An observational, cross-sectional study of the indicators “MORB.199.01 FL” and “MORB.200.01 FL” was carried out for the years of 2016 to 2020 by the national total, and disaggregation the Region of Health and Grouping of Health Centres. It was performed a descriptive and inferential non-parametric statistic and calculated the dynamics of growth between 2016 and 2019, 2016 and 2020 and between 2019 and 2020.Results: From 2016 to 2019, both indicators increased nationally. From 2019 to 2020 there was only an increase in the proportion of patients with “tobacco abuse”.At the level of the ARS, from 2016 to 2019, regarding the proportion of patients with "chronic alcohol abuse", the highest values were found in the North, Centre and “Alentejo” while in the proportion of patients with "tobacco abuse" the North led. From 2019 to 2020, the proportion of patients with “chronic alcohol abuse” increased only in “Alentejo” and “Algarve” and the proportion of patients with “tobacco abuse” increased in all regions except in the North. In both studied indicators, there was no equity between regions.Discussion: The results obtained allow us to understand that the COVID19 pandemic influenced the indicators of this study, namely by the implementation of periods of confinement decreed by the Government and also by the reorganization of the NHS aimed to the management of the living epidemiological. It was possible to understand that the BI-CSP did not always have information that could be analysed more rigorously on these indicators, but that it is an important epidemiological tool. Conclusion: It seems that there is sensitivity of the indicators to measure trends, particularly in what concerns tobacco abuse. So, it is important to make an effort followed up by a duly encouragement, so that Health Professionals carry out a correct registration of data.
