ObjectivesTo target health communication at less health-conscious groups, evidence on health behaviours’ effects on non-health-related outcomes – such as academic performance – is necessary. Recent research has highlighted the associations of various health behaviours on academic performance of university students. However, there is a lack of research investigating the most predominant health behaviours simultaneously and their association with academic performance, as well as the factors that potentially influence the direction or strength of these associations. Therefore, this study investigated (I) which of the predominant health behaviours (physical activity, healthy diet, sleep, sedentary behaviour, alcohol consumption, smoking, drug use) are most associated with academic performance and (II) whether the personal resource of trait mindfulness moderates these associations.MethodsAn online survey was conducted amongst university students during the 2021 summer semester. Group differences in academic performance regarding health behaviours were analysed using ANOVA (N = 1,049). A first linear regression model (N = 571), considering all selected health behaviours simultaneously, assessed their association with academic performance. A second model (N = 540) assessed interaction effects of health behaviours and trait mindfulness. Separate regressions assessed each interaction’s association with academic performance.ResultsSleep, fruit and vegetable consumption, and gender were significantly associated with academic performance. The second model showed no significant interaction effects.ConclusionTargeting sleep and fruit and vegetable consumption might be the most promising strategies for elevating students’ academic performance, thereby enabling health communication strategies to reach groups driven by performance improvements rather than health benefits.

IntroductionEnergy imbalance gap (EIG) is defined as the average daily difference between energy intake (EI) and energy expenditure (EE). This study aimed to examine the associations between EIG and sociodemographic and anthropometric variables in the adolescent population of eight Latin America countries.MethodsA total of 680 adolescents aged 15 to 18 were included in this study. The estimation of EI was based on two non-consecutive 24-h dietary recalls. EE was predicted from Schofield equations using physical activity level obtained through the long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Sociodemographic data and anthropometric measurements were also obtained. A descriptive analysis and multilevel linear regression models were used to examine associations between variables.ResultsThe mean EI, EE, and EIG were 2091.3 kcal, 2067.8 kcal, and 23.5 kcal, respectively. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Contamination of the breathing circuit and medication preparation surface of an anesthesia machine can increase the risk of cross-infection. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the contamination of the anesthetic medication preparation surface, respiratory circuits, and devices used in general anesthesia with assisted mechanical ventilation. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional, quantitative study conducted at the surgical center of a philanthropic hospital, of medium complexity located in the municipality of Três Lagoas, in the eastern region of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. METHODS: Eighty-two microbiological samples were collected from the breathing circuits. After repeating the samples in different culture media, 328 analyses were performed. RESULTS: A higher occurrence of E. coli, Enterobacter spp., Pseudomonas spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae (P < 0.001) were observed. Variations were observed depending on the culture medium and sample collection site. CONCLUSION: The study findings underscore the inadequate disinfection of the inspiratory and expiratory branches, highlighting the importance of stringent cleaning and disinfection of high-touch surfaces.

The purpose of this work is to propose a decision-making algorithm to select the optimal composite material for thermally conductive but electrically insulating applications, such as microelectronic packaging heat sinks, diodes, and other electronic devices. In particular, an algorithm based on the criteria importance through inter-criteria correlation (CRITIC) and additive ratio assessment (ARAS) methods are used to evaluate several conflicting attributes. The evaluated samples were acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) composites filled with 0–30 vol% of boron nitride (BN) particles and prepared through melt compounding. The performance attributes considered through testing were heat conductivity, electrical resistivity, density, hardness, and tensile properties (Young's modulus, tensile strength, and elongation). As expected, the composite containing 30 vol% BN exhibited the highest heat conductivity, electrical resistivity, and Young's modulus. Meanwhile, unfilled ABS had the highest elongation at break, tensile strength, and lowest density. With respect to hardness, the 1 vol% BN-loaded composite proved to be superior. Therefore, the experimental data revealed a considerable compositional dependence with no obvious trend. The optimal composition was identified by adopting the CRITIC-ARAS multi-criteria decision-making algorithm, based on which the 30 vol% BN-containing composite was dominant among all the prepared samples. A validation through other decision-making techniques was performed to support the robustness of the proposed technique. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out on several weight exchange scenarios to see the stability of the ranking results.

Abstract The irritation scale is a widely used and reliable self-report scale for measuring cognitive and emotional strain related to the work environment. It extends existing measures by providing a sensitive assessment for pre-clinical stress at work. Existing normative data are based on convenience samples and are therefore not representative. This study provides new normative data for the irritation scale based on a representative German sample (N = 1480). The new normative data indicate that the overall level of irritation in the German workforce is significantly lower compared to previously published data. Convergent and discriminant validity is confirmed by correlations with depression and anxiety (Patient Health Questionnaire-4 for Depression and Anxiety), somatic symptom scales (Bodily Distress Syndrome 25 checklist, Somatic Symptom Scale-8, Giessen Subjective Complaints List-8, comorbidity), psychological functioning (Mini-ICF rating for activity and participation disorders in mental illness), work-related stressors (overcommitment and bullying) and individual resources (self-efficacy). The results confirm the utility of the irritation scale and provide new benchmarks that avoid an underestimation of the levels of irritation in future studies.

The topic of e-cigarettes is controversial. Opponents focus on e-cigarettes' risks for young people, while supporters emphasize the potential for e-cigarettes to assist smokers in quitting smoking. Most US health organizations, media coverage, and policymakers have focused primarily on risks to youths. Because of their messaging, much of the public-including most smokers-now consider e-cigarette use as dangerous as or more dangerous than smoking. By contrast, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine concluded that e-cigarette use is likely far less hazardous than smoking. Policies intended to reduce adolescent vaping may also reduce adult smokers' use of e-cigarettes in quit attempts. Because evidence indicates that e-cigarette use can increase the odds of quitting smoking, many scientists, including this essay's authors, encourage the health community, media, and policymakers to more carefully weigh vaping's potential to reduce adult smoking-attributable mortality. We review the health risks of e-cigarette use, the likelihood that vaping increases smoking cessation, concerns about youth vaping, and the need to balance valid concerns about risks to youths with the potential benefits of increasing adult smoking cessation.

IntroductionCytisinicline (known as cytisine), a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonist, is a smoking cessation aid currently marketed in Central and Eastern Europe using a 1.5-mg/tablet 25-day downward titration schedule. No prior studies have evaluated other doses or administration schedules. This study evaluated the effects of a higher dosage and simplified dosing schedule on drug efficacy and tolerability.MethodsORCA-1 was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial that provided cytisinicline or placebo tablets plus behavioral support for 25 days. Adult smokers (>10 cigarettes daily) committed to quitting smoking were randomized to compare 2 cytisinicline doses (1.5 mg and 3 mg) versus placebo, and 2 administration schedules [downward titration versus 3 times daily (TID)]. Primary outcome was a reduction in expected cigarettes smoked at end of treatment; secondary outcomes were biochemically confirmed 7-day abstinence at Week 4 and continuous abstinence from Weeks 5 to 8.ResultsAmong 254 participants, those in cytisinicline arms (regardless of dose or schedule) had greater reductions in cigarettes smoked versus placebo, with differences observed in 3 cytisinicline arms statistically significant versus placebo. All cytisinicline arms had statistically significantly higher abstinence rates at Week 4 versus placebo. Both cytisinicline arms using TID schedules had statistically significantly higher continuous abstinence rates from Weeks 5 to 8 compared with placebo. Participants in the cytisinicline 3-mg TID arm had the highest abstinence rate. There were no safety concerns with either 1.5-mg or 3-mg cytisinicline.ConclusionBased on simpler dose scheduling, excellent tolerability, and best-continued abstinence rate, cytisinicline 3-mg TID was selected for future Phase 3 studies.ImplicationsAlthough the 1.5-mg 25-day titration schedule has been marketed in Central and Eastern Europe for decades, this study explored using a higher dosage and a simplified dosing schedule for impact on cytisinicline efficacy and tolerability. Based on these results, a Phase 3 program was initiated using cytisinicline 3-mg tablets on a TID schedule for potential market approval in the United States.

The present study aims at investigating the effect of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoplatelets on the properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) polymer. Composites containing 0-30 vol% hBN were prepared through batchwise melt compounding, which was followed by compression molding. Subsequently, the thermal and thermomechanical properties of the fabricated samples were investigated. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed that the storage modulus of the samples was markedly improved in the entire examined temperature range, while the glass transition temperature also gradually increased as a function of hBN content. According to the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the incorporated boron nitride particles enhanced the thermal stability of ABS composites, exhibiting a notably higher decomposition onset temperature. Additionally, the thermal conductivity of the ABS/hBN composites significantly increased by 570% when the hBN content was 30 vol%.

The interesting thermomechanical properties of rubber materials have favored their widespread application in many fields, with a consequent increase in the amount of worn synthetic and natural rubber discarded every year. However, the complex three-dimensional molecular structure of rubber complicates the recycling and degradation process, and the current rubber waste management measures (i.e., landfilling, incineration, rubber grinding) are found to be unsustainable or substantially inadequate. On the other hand, devulcanization technologies, thanks to the selective cleavage of crosslinks, represent a sustainable and feasible approach to obtain a material that can be reintroduced into the rubber value chain or reused in novel eco-sustainable thermoplastic or elastomeric blends. Hence, this review provides an overview of the current rubber waste management techniques and devulcanization technologies, highlighting the underlying devulcanization mechanisms, describing the pros and cons of each method, and presenting some literature examples. Since most of the research on devulcanization has been made on waste tires, this review mainly focuses on the most widely used rubber classes for this application, i.e., natural rubber (NR) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and the most common vulcanization technique, i.e., sulfur vulcanization. Considering the importance of the application of a circular economy approach, this work also reviews the applications of rubber devulcanizates, focusing on how devulcanized rubber can be compounded with different polymeric matrices to develop eco-sustainable polymer blends with suitable physical properties.

Objective To characterize the sociodemographic and clinical variables of people with intestinal stomas. Materials and Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study with 47 patients of a Specialized Rehabilitation Center (CER II/APAE) in the municipality of Três Lagoas, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Midwestern Brazil, from December 2019 to June 2020. Data was analyzed using inferential descriptive statistics (Anderson-Darling, Chi-squared, and Mann-Whitney normality tests). Results Regarding the patients, 87.23% were from Três Lagoas, 51.06% were female, 40.43% were aged from 60 to 69 years, 59.57% were married, 53.19% were brown, 59.57% were catholic, 36.17% finished elementary school, 46.81% were retired, and 57.45% earned a monthly income below 1 minimum wage. Moreover, 61.70% had undergone terminal colostomy (61.70%), 61.70% had received guidance about its placing, 57.45% had it placed due to situations of urgency, 74.47% had a stoma installed due to a neoplasia, 38.30% were permanent, with 46.81% located in the inferior left quadrant (ILQ), 59.57% presented pasty effluent, 63.83% had a circular diameter, 53.19% had pouches with 2 pieces and 57.45%, with a flexible base, 87.23% had other adjunct equipment, and 95.74% had been trained in self-care. The most common complication was skin/peristomal irritant contact dermatitis (59,57%), and 65,95% of these cases were solved by teaching self-care. The type of stoma was significantly associated with the consistency of the effluent and the size of the protrusion (p > 0.05). Conclusion The results found can support strategies to implement practices to promote health, develop new public policies, to provide training in self-care, and prevent and treat complications.

Resumen: Introducción: existe evidencia sobre el desgaste profesional experimentado por el profesorado del área de la salud producto de la sobrecarga que implica la combinación de los roles académico, investigador y asistencial. Es mandatorio generar conocimiento sobre iniciativas que promuevan su autocuidado a nivel individual e institucional. El objetivo del estudio es examinar a través de indicadores de desgaste profesional y bienestar subjetivo la implementación del programa «Bases científicas del bienestar y herramientas de autocuidado para profesionales de la salud». Material y métodos: se evaluó el síndrome de desgaste profesional, atención plena, bienestar psicosocial, vitalidad y afectividad de 120 participantes de 2 cohortes. El estudio cuantitativo comparó las mediciones en 2 tiempos. El cambio se analizó mediante las pruebas de Wilcoxon y Mann-Whitney. Cronbach y McDonald se utilizaron para evaluar la confiabilidad de los instrumentos. Resultados: se implementó un programa de 5 semanas que incluyó actividades individuales preferentemente asincrónicas, retroalimentación y evaluación sumativa. Seis tutores recibieron entrenamiento en bienestar y autocompasión. Los indicadores de bienestar y desgaste profesional cambiaron favorablemente al término del programa (valor p < 0,01). El cambio se mantuvo al analizar los indicadores separados por sexo, cohorte y carrera, excepto en despersonalización, realización personal y afectividad positiva. Los instrumentos alcanzaron una confiabilidad > 0,7. Conclusión: el programa de autocuidado fue efectivo para reducir el agotamiento emocional y promover las estrategias que mejoran la atención plena y la autorregulación. Cursos a distancia acotados que promuevan el aprendizaje de estrategias de autocuidado podrían formar parte de programas de desarrollo de las competencias docentes para profesionales de la salud. Abstract: Introduction: There is evidence of burnout experienced by faculty due to the overload involved in combining the academic and research roles and the practice with patients. It is interesting to generate knowledge on initiatives that favor learning individual and institutional self-care strategies. The study aims to examine the implementation of the program ''Scientific Basis of Well-Being and Self-Care Tools for Health Professionals'' through burnout and well-being indicators. Material and methods: One hundred twenty participants from two cohorts completed questionnaires. Burnout, Mindfulness, Psychosocial Well-being, Vitality, and Affectivity indicators were measured. The quantitative study compared the measurements in two moments. Change t1-t2 was analyzed with W Wilcoxon-test and U Mann-Whitney-test. Cronbach's and McDonald's tests were used to analyze the instruments’ reliability. Results: A five-week online program was implemented in the Moodle platform. Asynchronous individual activities and learning assessments were incorporated. Six tutors were trained in well-being and self-compassion. Levels of wellbeing and burnout changed post-program favorably (p-value < 0.01). The change is maintained when analyzing the variables separated by sex, profession, and cohort, except the depersonalization, personal accomplishment, and positive affectivity variables. Questionnaires achieved reliability > 0.7. Conclusion: A five-week self-care online program effectively reduced emotional exhaustion and promoted strategies that enhanced dispositional mindfulness and self-regulation. Short online courses that encourage learning self-care strategies could be part of programs that develop teaching competencies in health professionals.

En este artículo de revisión analizamos la actitud de vigilancia epistemológica que Bourdieu propone para la construcción de conocimiento científico que se “está haciendo”. Luego, ubicamos esa actitud junto a las otras sugerencias y distinciones que nos brinda. A partir de allí, analizamos las propuestas de Lakatos y Habermas a lo largo de su obra acerca de la reconstrucción. Finalizamos nuestro recorrido con los puntos en común entre ambos autores, así como sus diferencias, y con esos aportes sugerimos la ampliación de la actitud reflexiva de vigilancia epistemológica hacia la ciencia que “ya está hecha”.

Abstract Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) frequently metastasizes into the peritoneum, which contributes to poor prognosis. Metastatic spreading is promoted by cancer cell plasticity, yet its regulation by the microenvironment is incompletely understood. Here, we show that the presence of hyaluronan and proteoglycan link protein-1 (HAPLN1) in the extracellular matrix enhances tumor cell plasticity and PDAC metastasis. Bioinformatic analysis showed that HAPLN1 expression is enriched in the basal PDAC subtype and associated with worse overall patient survival. In a mouse model for peritoneal carcinomatosis, HAPLN1-induced immunomodulation favors a more permissive microenvironment, which accelerates the peritoneal spread of tumor cells. Mechanistically, HAPLN1, via upregulation of tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (TNFR2), promotes TNF-mediated upregulation of Hyaluronan (HA) production, facilitating EMT, stemness, invasion and immunomodulation. Extracellular HAPLN1 modifies cancer cells and fibroblasts, rendering them more immunomodulatory. As such, we identify HAPLN1 as a prognostic marker and as a driver for peritoneal metastasis in PDAC.

Abstract Background Individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) have high prevalence of cigarette smoking and difficulty quitting. Peer recovery coaches (PRCs; individuals with lived SUD experience) facilitate SUD behavior change in recoverees but it is unknown if/how they address tobacco treatment in SUD recovery coaching. We assessed PRC’s tobacco-related practices and attitudes about tobacco treatment in SUD recovery. Methods The Tobacco use In Peer-recovery Study (TIPS) was a cross-sectional mixed-methods pilot survey (January–March 2022) of the 26 PRCs employed by a Massachusetts-based healthcare system’s 12 SUD treatment clinics/programs. PRCs completed a quantitative survey (n = 23/26; 88%) and a telephone-based qualitative interview (n = 20/26; 77%). Results One-third of PRCs reported current smoking, 50% reported former smoking, and 18% never smoked. Among PRCs, 61% reported accompanying recoverees outdoors to smoke, 26% smoked with recoverees, 17% had provided cigarettes to recoverees, 32% used smoking to help build peer-relationships, and 74% rated smoking as socially acceptable in SUD treatment. PRCs reported regularly talking to recoverees about tobacco treatment (65%), believed they should have a role in helping recoverees quit smoking (52%), and were interested in tobacco treatment training (65%). A majority of both nonsmoking and current smoking PRCs (73% vs. 57%) regularly talked to recoverees about quitting smoking. Conclusion PRCs’ attitudes about integrating tobacco treatment into SUD recovery coaching were generally positive and PRCs reported they could have a role in helping recoverees with tobacco treatment. Barriers to integrating tobacco treatment into SUD recovery include use of cigarettes as a peer-recovery tool and high prevalence and social acceptability of smoking in SUD recovery.

In the contemporary emphasis on weight reduction, the utilization of advanced materials like Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs) and cutting-edge technologies such as 3D printing of metal is increasingly crucial. This study delves into the junction of CFRP and titanium, aiming to conduct Single Lap shear tests on specimens featuring a co-lamination of long fiber composite onto a metal lattice structure. Different specimens with different dimensions of the Simple Cubic (SC) unit cell were subjected to testing. A microscope investigation facilitated an exploration of junction failure and epoxy resin infiltration into the lattice substrate. Employing an efficient 2D Finite Element Model, the homogenization process yielded theoretical models underestimating the Young Modulus by approximately 10% compared to real specimens. Despite the challenges in bonding titanium and CFRP, the novel junction exhibited a shear stress of 17.25 MPa, which is nearly equivalent to those of a co-lamination between sandblasted steel and CFRP, that is 17.15 MPa.

Psychosocial status and lifestyle are key risk factors of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which, in turn, are main drivers of healthcare costs and morbimortality worldwide, including Chile. Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is one of the healthiest dietary patterns under study. However, its impact on high-risk conditions, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS), and NCDs outside the Mediterranean Basin remains mostly unexplored. Even though Central Chile has an environment, food production, and culinary traditions comparable to those present in Mediterranean countries, few studies -some with significant methodological limitations- have evaluated the effect of MedDiet on health and/or disease in Chilean subjects. Importantly, a Mediterranean lifestyle is a modus vivendi that integrates physical health with mental and social well-being. Psychological well-being (PWB) is associated with healthy behaviors, positive health outcomes, and longevity, thereby emerging as a novel healthcare goal. We report here an ongoing randomized controlled clinical trial in Chilean patients with MetS seeking to test whether (1) a PWB theory-based intervention facilitates induction to and increases long-term adherence to a locally adapted MedDiet, and (2) a MedDiet intervention -implemented alone or combined with well-being promotion- is more effective at reversing MetS compared to individuals following a low-fat diet without psychological support. The CHILEan MEDiterranean (CHILEMED) diet intervention study is a 1-year trial including patients with MetS living in Chile. Participants will be assigned randomly by a computer-generated random number sequence to one of the three intervention arms: a) low-fat diet as control group, b) MedDiet alone, and c) MedDiet plus well-being support. Patients will be followed-up by individual and/or group online nutritional sessions or phone cal as well as 6- and 12-month in-person re-assessment of medical history, medication use, food intake, PWB, anthropometrics/physical exam, and blood collection for laboratory analysis. The primary outcome of the trial will be the effect of the MedDiet -with or without PWB intervention- on overall reversal of MetS compared to low-fat diet alone. Based on a statistical superiority trial, expected impact, and patient loss, the estimated study sample is 339 subjects (113 individuals per arm in 3 equal-sized groups). Abstract Background Excess weight is increasing worldwide, and in Latin America more than half of the population is excess weight. One of the reasons for this increase has been excessive sitting time. Still, it remains to be seen whether there is an excessive amount of that time in Latin American adults. This study aimed to associate different sitting time cut-off points with the excess weight. Methods Data from the Latin American Study of Nutrition and Health (ELANS), a cross-sectional population-based survey conducted in eight Latin American countries, were used. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) is a key haemodynamic variable monitored in critically ill patients. The advantages of oscillometric noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP) measurement are its easy and fast methodology; however, the accuracy and the precision of this measurement in critically ill patients is constantly debated. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies comparing oscillometric NIBP methods with invasive arterial pressure (IAP) measurements. We included studies of adult critically ill patients, which evaluated MAP in the same patient by both NIBP and IAP at any site. We included only studies comparing simultaneous measurements of arterial pressure by NIBP and IAP, reporting their results using mean difference and SD of agreement. The main outcome was to define the bias of the MAP measured by NIBP over the IAP measurement. The quality of the studies was analysed by the QUADAS 2 tool. Seven studies and 1593 patients were included in the main analysis. The oscillometric NIBP method had a mean value of -1.50 mmHg when compared with IAP (95% CI: –3.34 to 0.35; I2 = 96% for random effects model, P < 0.01). The limits of agreement for MAP varied between –14.6 mmHg and +40.3 mmHg. NIBP had an adequate accuracy regarding MAP measurements by oscillometry. Limits of agreement may thus narrow the clinical applicability in scenarios in which there is a need for a more precise management of blood pressure.

Abstract A great deal of empirical research on the consequences of a psychological contract breach (PCB) has overlooked the role of time in understanding individuals’ reactions to a PCB. Moreover, psychological contract research primarily focuses on how employees react to perceptions of a PCB, while questions regarding how the organization’s responsiveness (i.e., social account) might impact these reactions remain unanswered. We aimed to enhance the understanding of stress reactions and recovery that are triggered by PCB perceptions and stimulate empirical research that treats psychological contracts as a dynamic phenomenon. Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, we investigated how social account delivery timing—and its subjective experience—influences individuals’ stress resolution processes in the aftermath of a PCB. To this end, we used an experimental design and assessed participants’ physiological (i.e., heart rate) and psychological (i.e., self-report) stress reactions after inducing a breach. Our results underscore that a PCB is experienced as a stressful event. In addition, we find that social account timing influences heart rate recovery following a PCB. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our findings and offer recommendations for practitioners.

Abstract This study examines the associations between perceived urban environment attributes and obesity indices by country using data from an eight-nation study from Latin America. The data were collected from 8185 adults. The Neighbourhood Environment Walkability-abbreviated scale was used to assess perceived urban environment attributes. Obesity indices considered were body mass index, waist circumference, neck circumference, a body shape index and waist-to-height ratio. The perception of a more and better land use mix-diversity (β − 0.44; 95% CI − 0.59, − 0.28), traffic safety (− 0.39; − 0.66, − 0.12), and safety from crime (− 0.36; − 0.57, − 0.15) was associated with lower body mass index across the entire sample. Land use mix-diversity (− 1.21; − 1.60, − 0.82), street connectivity (− 0.26; − 0.37, − 0.15), and traffic safety (− 0.79; − 1.47, − 0.12) were negatively associated with waist circumference. Land use mix-diversity (− 0.11; − 0.20, − 0.03), land use mix-access (− 0.23; − 0.34, 0.12), walking/cycling facilities (− 0.22; − 0.37, − 0.08), and safety from crime (− 0.27; − 0.42, − 0.12) were negatively associated with neck circumference. No associations between perceived urban environment attributes and a body shape index were found. Land use mix-diversity (− 0.01; − 0.02, − 0.01), aesthetics (− 0.02; − 0.03, − 0.01), and safety from crime (− 0.02; − 0.04, − 0.01) were associated with waist-to-height ratio. Environmental interventions involving urban environment attributes are associated with obesity indices and, therefore, may help decrease the prevalence of overweight and obesity.

Abstract This study aims to establish cut-off points for the number of minutes of physical activity intensity and the number of daily steps that identify overweight/obesity in adolescents, adults, and older adults. This study examined data from 2737 participants. Physical activity intensity and the number of daily steps were assessed using GT3X+ ActiGraph model accelerometers. Body mass index, waist-to-height ratio, and waist-to-hip ratio were used as indicators of overweight/obesity. The cut-off points for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for the prevention of overweight/obesity according to body mass index in women ranged from 15.1 to 30.2 min/day; in men, the values were from 15.4 to 33.8 min/day. The lowest cut-off point for daily steps was established in the adolescent group for women and men (7304 and 5162). The highest value in women was 11,412 (51–65 years) and 13,234 in men (18–30 years). Results from measurements different from BMI, show average cut-off points for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and daily steps of 29.1/8348 and 43.5/10,456 according to waist-to-height ratio; and results of 29.3/11,900 and 44.3/11,056 according to the waist-to-hip ratio; in women and men respectively. A more specific recommendation of physical activity and daily steps adjusted by sex and age range is suggested to prevent overweight/obesity.

Waste tyres and their accumulation is a global environmental concern, as 1.5 billion of waste tyres are generated annually in the world. The products are not biodegradable and, if disposed of in landfills and stockpiles, are recognized for leaching toxic chemicals into the surrounding environment, acting as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and fueling inextinguishable fires. The potential of using rubber from worn tyres in many civil engineering works has been studied for more than 30 years, and their application in construction materials comprises cementitious concrete, asphalts, and granulates for earth structures. Recycling of tyres in these field represents a suitable way of disposal for both environmental and economic reasons. Therefore, the aim of this review is to present the state of the art in tyre recycling in civil applications. In particular, the re-use of waste tyres in cement-based materials has been discussed, and then the recycling of waste tyres in bituminous mixtures and in geotechnical applications has been reviewed. This review is mainly focused on the physical properties of construction materials when recycled rubber is incorporated, trying to highlight the effects deriving from the interaction between rubber and these materials, and analyzing the proposed technological approaches from a material science perspective.

Abstract Vaccination hesitancy has been a major challenge for health authorities and societies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The general determinants of vaccination intentions and behavior include sociodemographic and health-related, psychological, and communication-related factors, with varying relevance for different types of vaccinations, countries, and target groups. The predictors of university students’ COVID-19 vaccination behavior have not been sufficiently studied. Using a German university as an example and based on an online survey of 1398 university students, we investigated factors related to (a) the likelihood of vaccination against COVID-19 and (b) vaccination intention among those who had not been vaccinated by summer of 2021. Psychological factors showed high relevance. Field of study, trust in, and use of certain media and information channels were found to be important determinants of students’ vaccination decision. Our findings can help better understand university students’ vaccination behavior to develop and implement tailored strategies and campaigns.

Abstract Background Evidence has shown that active transportation decreases obesity rates, but considering walking or cycling as separate modes could provide additional information on the health benefits in adolescents. This study aimed to examine the associations between walking and cycling as form active transportation and obesity indicators in Latin American adolescents. Methods Population-based study with 671 adolescents (mean age: 15.9 [standard deviation: 0.8] years) from eight countries participating in the Latin American Study of Nutrition and Health/Estudio Latino Americano Nutrition y Salud (ELANS). Walking and cycling for active transportation were measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire long version. Body mass index, waist circumference, neck circumference, and relative fat mass were used as obesity indicators. Associations were estimated using logistic regression models for the pooled data adjusted for country, sex, age, socio-economic levels, race/ethnicity, leisure-time physical activity and energy intake. Results Mean time spent walking and cycling was 22.6 (SD: 33.1) and 5.1 (SD: 24.1) min/day, respectively. The median values were 12.8 (IQR: 4.2; 25.7) and 0 (IQR: 0; 6.2) for walking and cycling. Participants reporting ≥ 10 min/week of walking or cycling for active transportation were 84.2% and 15.5%, respectively. Costa Rica (94.3% and 28.6%) showed the highest prevalence for walking and cycling, respectively, while Venezuela (68.3% and 2.4%) showed the lowest prevalence. There was no significant association between walking for active transportation and any obesity indicator. In the overall sample, cycling for ≥ 10 min/week was significantly associated with a lower likelihood of overweight/obesity based on BMI (OR: 0.86; 95%CI: 0.88; 0.94) and waist circumference (OR: 0.90; 95%CI: 0.83; 0.97) adjusted for country, sex, age, socio-economic level, race/ethnicity, leisure-time physical activity and energy intake compared to cycling for

Abstract Background Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS) is a rare functional gastrointestinal disorder, which has a considerable burden on quality of life of both children and their family. Aim of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic modalities and therapeutic approach to CVS among Italian tertiary care centers and the differences according to subspecialties, as well as to explore whether potential predictive factors associated with either a poor outcome or a response to a specific treatment. Methods Cross-sectional multicenter web-based survey involving members of the Italian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (SIGENP) and Italian Society of Pediatric Neurology (SINP). Results A total of 67 responses were received and analyzed. Most of the respondent units cared for less than 20 patients. More than half of the patients were referred after 3 to 5 episodes, and a quarter after 5 attacks. We report different diagnostic approaches among Italian clinicians, which was particularly evident when comparing gastroenterologists and neurologists. Moreover, our survey demonstrated a predilection of certain drugs during emetic phase according to specific clinic, which reflects the cultural background of physicians. Conclusion In conclusion, our survey highlights poor consensus amongst clinicians in our country in the diagnosis and the management of children with CVS, raising the need for a national consensus guideline in order to standardize the practice.

Information overload is a problem that is being exacerbated by the ongoing digitalization of the world of work and the growing use of information and communication technologies. Therefore, the aim of this systematic literature review is to provide an insight into existing measures for prevention and intervention related to information overload. The methodological approach of the systematic review is based on the PRISMA standards. A keyword search in three interdisciplinary scientific databases and other more practice-oriented databases resulted in the identification of 87 studies, field reports, and conceptual papers that were included in the review. The results show that a considerable number of papers have been published on interventions on the behavioral prevention level. At the level of structural prevention, there are also many proposals on how to design work to reduce information overload. A further distinction can be made between work design approaches at the level of information and communication technology and at the level of teamwork and organizational regulations. Although the identified studies cover a wide range of possible interventions and design approaches to address information overload, the strength of the evidence from these studies is mixed.

Donation after circulatory death (DCD) is a promising strategy for increasing organ supply worldwide. The Italian current legislative framework has represented a major barrier to the implementation of such program, given the 20-minute no-touch period required for donor death declaration.In this study, we describe DCD reporting activity in Veneto, number of procurements and kidney transplants performed from DCD donors since the beginning of its application, in 2017. We considered donor characteristics (DCD Maastricht category, age, sex) and number of kidney grafts retrieved and transplanted for each donor.All the procured kidney grafts underwent ex situ hypothermic perfusion and pre-implantation kidney biopsy according to Karpinski-Remuzzi score. Perfusion parameters were monitored in order to predict functional recovery after transplantation and the histological evaluation focused on evaluating the extension of the ischemic injury. In the Veneto experience, histological data and hypothermic perfusion have proven to be very useful tools to make a decision concerning whether a kidney is suitable for transplantation.Considering logistical, clinical, ethical and technical issues related to DCD donor program in Italy, many resources had to be dedicated in Veneto to build adequate technical expertise and to develop dedicated care pathways. The Veneto Region Transplant Coordination has encouraged and supported the development of DCD activity, increasing kidney transplantation from DCD donors.

BackgroundStudents were at an increased risk for elevated mental symptoms during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to pre-pandemic levels. As universities remained closed much longer than anticipated, the mental burden was expected to persist through the second year of the pandemic. The current study aimed to investigate the prevalence of mental distress from 2019 through 2021 and identify risk factors for elevated mental burden, focusing on gender.MethodsWe analyzed three cross-sectional online surveys among students at the University of Mainz, conducted in 2019 (n = 4,351), 2020 (n = 3,066), and 2021 (n = 1,438). Changes in the prevalence of depressive symptoms, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and loneliness were calculated using Pearson's chi-square tests and analyses of variance. Multiple linear regressions yielded associated risk factors.ResultsThe proportion of students with clinically relevant depressive symptoms was significantly higher during the pandemic (38.9% in 2020, and 40.7% in 2021), compared to pre-pandemic (29.0% in 2019). Similarly, more students reported suicidal ideation and generalized anxiety during the pandemic with a peak in the second pandemic year (2021). The level of loneliness was significantly higher in 2020, compared to 2019, and remained at a high level in 2021 (p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.142). Female and diverse/open gender, being single, living alone, and being a first-year student were identified as risk factors associated with mental burden during the pandemic.DiscussionMental burdens remained elevated among students through the second year of the pandemic and were associated with socio-demographic risk factors and pandemic-related concerns. Future research should monitor recovery and evaluate the need for psychosocial support.

(1) Background: Cigarette smoking, risky alcohol consumption, and marijuana smoking are the most common behaviors related to legal and illicit drug use worldwide, including among university students. To plan effective evidence-based programs to prevent the risky consumption of these substances among university students, the present study aimed to identify potential sociodemographic and study-related risk groups and predictors of consumption. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional online health survey with approximately 270 health-related items was conducted among students at the University of Mainz, Germany. Cigarette smoking, risky alcohol consumption (AUDIT-C score: female ≥ 4, male ≥ 5), and marijuana smoking were chosen as dependent variables. Of the 270 health-related items, 56 were chosen as independent variables and collated into five groups (sociodemographic, psychological, study-related psychosocial, general psychosocial and health behavior). The prevalence of cigarette smoking, risky alcohol consumption, and marijuana smoking was assessed using established and validated instruments. Pearson’s chi-square test was used to analyze the differences in prevalence between the sociodemographic and study-related groups, and binary logistic regression was used for analyses with stepwise inclusion of the five variable groups. (3) Results: Of the 3991 university students who entered the analyses, 14.9% reported smoking cigarettes, 38.6% reported risky alcohol consumption, and 10.9% reported smoking marijuana. The prevalence of these differed between genders, fields of study, and aspired degree level, among other factors. Binary logistic regression analyses revealed nine significant predictors (p ≤ 0.05) of cigarette smoking (Nagelkerke R2 = 0.314), 18 significant predictors of risky alcohol consumption (Nagelkerke R2 = 0.270), and 16 significant predictors of marijuana smoking (Nagelkerke R2 = 0.239). (4) Conclusions: This study showed cigarette smoking, risky alcohol consumption, and marijuana smoking among university students in Germany to be associated with multiple factors, especially health behaviors. Furthermore, each of the substances was highly associated with each of the two other substances we examined. Other variable groups, such as psychological or psychosocial variables, seemed to play a rather minor role. Therefore, our recommendation for future prevention programs is that substance use among university students should be addressed as a whole, not just in terms of specific substances.
