Abstract

We present a new analysis of previously published SuperCDMS data using a profile likelihood framework to search for sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles through two inelastic scattering channels: bremsstrahlung radiation and the Migdal effect. By considering these possible inelastic scattering channels, experimental sensitivity can be extended to DM masses that are undetectable through the DM-nucleon elastic scattering channel, given the energy threshold of current experiments. We exclude DM masses down to 220 MeV/c2 at 2.7×10−30 cm2 via the bremsstrahlung channel. The Migdal channel search provides overall considerably more stringent limits and excludes DM masses down to 30 MeV/c2 at 5.0×10−30 cm2.

Abstract

Quantum-correlated biphoton states play an important role in quantum communication and processing, especially considering the recent advances in integrated photonics. However, it remains a challenge to flexibly transport quantum states on a chip, when dealing with large-scale sophisticated photonic designs. The equivalence between certain aspects of quantum optics and solid-state physics makes it possible to utilize a range of powerful approaches in photonics, including topologically protected boundary states, graphene edge states, and dynamic localization. Optical dynamic localization allows efficient protection of classical signals in photonic systems by implementing an analogue of an external alternating electric field. Here, we report on the observation of dynamic localization for quantum-correlated biphotons, including both the generation and the propagation aspects. As a platform, we use sinusoidal waveguide arrays with cubic nonlinearity. We record biphoton coincidence count rates as evidence of robust generation of biphotons and demonstrate the dynamic localization features in both spatial and temporal space by analyzing the quantum correlation of biphotons at the output of the waveguide array. Experimental results demonstrate that various dynamic modulation parameters are effective in protecting quantum states without introducing complex topologies. Our Letter opens new avenues for studying complex physical processes using photonic chips and provides an alternative mechanism of protecting communication channels and nonclassical quantum sources in large-scale integrated quantum optics.

Abstract

Integrated photonic architectures based on optical waveguides are one of the leading candidates for the future realisation of large-scale quantum computation. One of the central challenges in realising this goal is simultaneously minimising loss whilst maximising interferometric visibility within waveguide circuits. One approach is to reduce circuit complexity and depth. A major constraint in most planar waveguide systems is that beamsplitter transformations between distant optical modes require numerous intermediate SWAP operations to couple them into nearest neighbour proximity, each of which introduces loss and scattering. Here, we propose a 3D architecture which can significantly mitigate this problem by geometrically bypassing trivial intermediate operations. We demonstrate the viability of this concept by considering a worst-case 2D scenario, where we interfere the two most distant optical modes in a planar structure. Using femtosecond laser direct-writing technology we experimentally construct a 2D architecture to implement Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between its most distant modes, and a 3D one with corresponding physical dimensions, demonstrating significant improvement in both fidelity and efficiency in the latter case. In addition to improving fidelity and efficiency of individual non-adjacent beamsplitter operations, this approach provides an avenue for reducing the optical depth of circuits comprising complex arrays of beamsplitter operations.

70. How elite professional service firms recruit graduates in China

Abstract

China has been experiencing a series of socio-economic transitions since the market reform was explicitly accentuated in the 1990s. On the one hand, China has grown to be the second largest economy and is now producing one of the largest groups of university-educated workers in the world. On the other hand, as a newly emergent player, the professional service sector has contributed to assimilating highly-educated graduates and accelerating the trends of financialisaton, internationalisation and knowledge-based expansion of Chinese society and economy. However, how the growing professional service sector intersects with Chinese transitions is underexplored. In particular, regardless of its theoretical and empirical significance, how professional service firms recruit graduates has long been neglected by existing literature. In this sense, this thesis aims to remedy this gap through a qualitative investigation into the campus recruitment of professional service firms in China. In Chapter 1, I begin by describing key background and context of this thesis as well as its theoretical framework and methodology. In light of a theoretical framework of symbolic boundaries and positional conflict, it attempts to provide the insights into a site of elite hiring and explore its theoretical potential. Drawing on 73 semi-structured interviews with recruiters in elite financial and consulting firms, contents of job advertisements and an array of on-site observations to campus fairs and a day of job interviews, this study is structured as four empirical chapters that chronologically analyse the process of graduate recruitment. Chapter 2 surveys what kinds of talents recruiters were looking for before the formal selection started. Chapter 3 and 4 focus on how recruiters screened and selected résumés. Chapter 5 probs into how recruiters assessed interview performances. Overall, this thesis argues that graduate hiring was a culturally ‘scripted’ project of elite professional service firms in China and shaped by recruiters’ cultural belief and wider organisational and institutional circumstances. In this context, recruiters tended to use various information in order to select graduates akin to or preferred by them or resonant to their ideals for the purpose of maintaining the order of professional workplaces.

71. Using the SOCIO chatbot for UML modelling:a family of experiments

Abstract

Context: Recent developments in natural language processing have facilitated the adoption of chatbots in typically collaborative software engineering tasks (such as diagram modelling). Families of experiments can assess the performance of tools and processes and, at the same time, alleviate some of the typical shortcomings of individual experiments (e.g., inaccurate and potentially biased results due to a small number of participants). Objective: Compare the usability of a chatbot for collaborative modelling (i.e., SOCIO) and an online web tool (i.e., Creately). Method: We conducted a family of three experiments to evaluate the usability of SOCIO against the Creately online collaborative tool in academic settings. Results: The student participants were faster at building class diagrams using the chatbot than with the online collaborative tool and more satisfied with SOCIO. Besides, the class diagrams built using the chatbot tended to be more concise —albeit slightly less complete. Conclusion: Chatbots appear to be helpful for building class diagrams. In fact, our study has helped us to shed light on the future direction for experimentation in this field and lays the groundwork for researching the applicability of chatbots in diagramming.

72. Modeling and Detecting Communities in Node Attributed Networks

Abstract

As a fundamental structure in real-world networks, in addition to graph topology, communities can also be reflected by abundant node attributes. In attributed community detection, probabilistic generative models (PGMs) have become the mainstream method due to their principled characterization and competitive performances. Here, we propose a novel PGM without imposing any distributional assumptions on attributes, which is superior to the existing PGMs that require attributes to be categorical or Gaussian distributed. Based on the block model of graph structure, our model incorporates the attribute by describing its effect on node popularity. To characterize the effect quantitatively, we analyze the community detectability for our model and then establish the requirements of the node popularity term. This leads to a new scheme for the crucial model selection problem in choosing and solving attributed community detection models. With the model determined, an efficient algorithm is developed to estimate the parameters and to infer the communities. The proposed method is validated from two aspects. First, the effectiveness of our algorithm is theoretically guaranteed by the detectability condition. Second, extensive experiments indicate that our method not only outperforms the competing approaches on the employed datasets, but also shows better applicability to networks with various node attributes.

Several anti‑Aβ monoclonal antibody drugs have been approved for clinical use at home and abroad recently. In order to facilitate its safe and effective treatment of anti‑Aβ monoclonal antibody drugs for Alzheimer's disease (AD) in China, we present recommendations for the clinical use of anti‑Aβ monoclonal antibody drugs based on existing clinical trials and the clinical practice of AD treatment with Aducanumab at Ruijin Hospital Hainan Branch, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. The recommendations include clinical indications, pre ‑ medication assessment and preparation, medication instructions and precautions, as well as post ‑ medication clinical monitoring, which is aimed to furnish clinicians with comprehensive medication guidance.

Abstract

Many low-threshold experiments observe sharply rising event rates of yet unknown origins below a few hundred eV, and larger than expected from known backgrounds. Due to the significant impact of this excess on the dark matter or neutrino sensitivity of these experiments, a collective effort has been started to share the knowledge about the individual observations. For this, the EXCESS Workshop was initiated. In its first iteration in June 2021, ten rare event search collaborations contributed to this initiative via talks and discussions. The contributing collaborations were CONNIE, CRESST, DAMIC, EDELWEISS, MINER, NEWS-G, NUCLEUS, RICOCHET, SENSEI and SuperCDMS. They presented data about their observed energy spectra and known backgrounds together with details about the respective measurements. In this paper, we summarize the presented information and give a comprehensive overview of the similarities and differences between the distinct measurements. Abstract

In this communication, a novel transverse slot array with standing-wave excitation using substrate-integrated coaxial line (SICL) technique is proposed. The transverse series slots are arranged with a uniform spacing of one guided wavelength and centered over the inner strip of the SICL. A $5\times 1$ element linear subarray is designed with suppressed sidelobe levels (SLLs). A tapering power divider is then adopted to feed eight such subarrays and finally a $5\times 8\,\,2$ -D array is fabricated and tested for demonstration. A −10 dB impedance bandwidth (BW) from 33.87 to 35.10 GHz (3.57% at 34.5 GHz) is measured out with a peak broadside gain of 18.82 dBi. The E-plane and H-plane SLLs are −18.4 and −19.2 dB, respectively. Agreement between theory and experiment has been found to be good for both the linear array and the proposed antenna.

Abstract

The calculation and visualization of the dose field in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities is one of the important functions of the decommissioning virtual simulation system. The dose field simulation tools can provide radiation field distribution and play an important role in determining the decommissioning plan and protecting personnel during the engineering implementation process. This article investigates the development of dose field calculation and visualization in the reactor decommissioning virtual simulation systems. A preliminary technology plan suitable for the development of the decommissioning dose field calculation and visualization display programs of the first Heavy Water Research Reactor (HWRR) in China is proposed. The applicability of the selected scheme is analyzed. The functional requirement and development direction of the HWRR reactor decommissioning dose field tool are preliminarily determined. Furthermore, the reactor vessel of HWRR reactor is modeled, the dose field distribution is calculated and visualized based on the preliminary decommissioning code. This research can provide technical support for the development of the decommissioning simulation system for the first HWRR reactor in China.

Abstract

V-domain Ig suppressor of T cell activation (VISTA), encoded by the human VSIR gene, is a B7 family checkpoint homologous to the programmed death-Ligand 1 sequence. In gynecologic malignancies, VISTA is abnormally expressed and regulates the tumor immune microenvironment, causing a high upregulation of VISTA expression in T-cells and myeloid cells in the tumor microenvironment and promoting tumor proliferation, progression, and immune tolerance. Here, we review the research progress of VISTA in ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancers through its structure and immunomodulatory mechanism. The comprehensive study of VISTA is expected to improve the current problem of poor immunotherapeutic effects and provide new ideas for immune therapy in patients with gynecologic tumors.

100. Meridional and downward propagation of atmospheric circulation anomalies. Part II: Southern Hemisphere cold season variability

Abstract

As in the Northern Hemisphere, there exists a simultaneous poleward propagation of temperature anomalies in the stratosphere and equator-ward propagation in the troposphere in the Southern Hemisphere's cold season. It takes about 110 days for anomalies of one polarity to propagate from the equator to the pole (or half the period of the complete cycle), nearly twice as long as in the Northern Hemisphere. The earlier poleward propagation of temperature anomalies in upper levels compared with those in lower levels results in an apparent downward propagation in the stratosphere. Accompanying the poleward- and downward-propagating warm (cold) anomalies is a successive leveling (steepening) of isentropic surfaces, reflecting a simultaneous reduction (strengthening) of the meridional temperature gradient and increase (decrease) of the vertical static stability. Following changes in the thermal fields are poleward- and downward-propagating zonal wind anomalies of the opposite sign. The arrival of the poleward-propagating stratospheric thermal anomalies over the polar region coincides with the beginning of the compensating equatorward advancement of tropospheric thermal anomalies of the opposite sign. The synchronized meridional propagation in the thermal fields results from the temporal variation between stronger and weaker meridional mass circulations, which is responsible for a meridional out-of-phase variability pattern in both the stratosphere and troposphere and a vertical out-of-phase pattern between stratospheric and tropospheric temperature anomalies at high latitudes. The vertical alignment of a warm high (cold low) anomaly in the stratosphere overlying a cold high (warm low) anomaly at the surface explains the apparent 'equivalent barotropic' structure in the height anomalies.
