54. Performance and mechanism of Ficus caricabranch waste based biochar in removing Cd2+from aqueous solution

Abstract

Woody orchard wastes have caused tremendous pressure on the environment. In the study, Ficus caricabranch (FB) wastes were recycled and prepared for biochars (FBBs) through pyrolytic technique and the characteristics of FBBs, their Cd2+adsorption behaviors and mechanism in solution were investigated. The FBBs yield, H, N and O contents and hydrophilicity decreased, but the pH, Si, C and ash contents, aromaticity, specific surface area, total pore volume, and stability increased with the increase of pyrolysis temperature. Meanwhile, significant morphological and functional groups changes were observed with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The optimum Cd2+adsorption conditions were pH 6 and dosage of 5 g·L−1. The Cd2+adsorption capacities of all the FBBs were well described by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models and the maximum adsorption capacity was 34.85 mg·g−1for FBB800. The adsorption of FBB800 was spontaneous. Moreover, the selective adsorption sequence was in the order of Cd2+> Pb2+> Cu2+> Zn2+. After 5 cycles, the adsorption efficiency could still reach 80%. Precipitation with minerals and surface functional group complexation were the dominant mechanism for Cd2+adsorption. The results indicated that the FBBs could be applied as a low-cost adsorbent to remove Cd2+effectively from aqueous solutions.

74. Enhanced removal efficiency of Cd2+and Pb2+from aqueous solution by H3PO4–modified tea branch biochar: Characterization, adsorption performance and mechanism

Abstract

Biochar has been widely recognized as an environmentally efficient adsorbent for removal of heavy metals in wastewater. However, inferior adsorption capacity limits its practical application. In this study, a H3PO4–modified tea branch biochar (PTBB) was firstly prepared through the one step pyrolysis of H3PO4-pretreated tea branch powder for enhancing removal efficiency of Cd2+and Pb2+from aqueous solutions. H3PO4modification altered the physicochemical properties of pristine biochar. The PTBB exhibited superior adsorption performance. Its maximum adsorption capacities of Cd2+and Pb2+were 98.25 mg g−1and 127.5 mg g−1at the pH 6 and dosage of 2 g L−1, which was 1.5 and 1.3 folds of the pristine biochar, respectively. Cd2+and Pb2+adsorption data by PTBB were well fitted by the Langmuir isothermal and pseudo-second order kinetic models, indicating monolayer chemical adsorption controlled the adsorption process. The adsorption of Cd2+and Pb2+by PTBB was a spontaneous endothermic process and less affected by coexisting cations. PTBB demonstrated a greater affinity for Pb2+as compared with Cd2+in binary metal systems. Moreover, PTBB could maintain good stability and regeneration properties. The adsorption of Cd2+and Pb2+by PTBB was attributed to cation exchange, precipitation, complexation, and π electron interactions. The quantitative analysis indicated that complexation and precipitation were the primary adsorption mechanisms, which accounted for 50.52–50.56% and 36.7–42.18% to total Cd2+and Pb2+adsorption for PTBB, respectively. Therefore, PTBB exhibits great potential for application in the remediation of wastewater containing Cd2+or Pb2+.

75. In situdeposited multilayer integrated hydrogels for deformable and stretchable supercapacitors

Abstract

Hydrogel systems promote the development of flexible energy storage devices because of their inherent mechanical elasticity and ionic conductivity. However, achieving stable energy storage capacity under violent mechanical deformation is still a challenge for hydrogel devices. In this work, an all-in-one integrated supercapacitor (AISC) was assembled using in situdeposited polyaniline/graphene oxide nanocomposites for both sides of the incorporated ionic hydrogel electrolyte. The assembly process of the AISC was greatly simplified, and the displacement and separation of the multilayer structured hydrogel complex were avoided during mechanical deformation. The hydrogel electrolyte with ionic additives exhibited strong adhesion and flexibility, and high ionic conductivity, thereby ensuring the excellent specific capacitance and rate performance of the AISC. The specific capacitances of the AISC were 222.8 mF cm−2at the current density of 0.2 mA cm−2and 151.7 mF cm−2at 3.2 mA cm−2. The capacitance retention rate was 68.1%. The energy density of a piece of the device reached 44.6µW h cm−2at a power density of 120.0 µW cm−2. Moreover, reliable and reproducible energy storage was acquired under bending, compression, and stretching deformations. The AISC was also easily assembled in series to power a light-emitting diode (LED) light. This work provides a facile approach to the construction of flexible supercapacitors for the development of energy storage devices in flexible electronics.

Abstract

Exploring cost‐efficient, high‐active bifunctional electrochemical catalysts with long‐term stability are significant for green economy. Herein, a noble‐metal‐free sandwich‐structured catalyst, prepared with facile hydrothermal method and phosphorization process, in which the amorphous MoSx serves as an intermediate layer between the Fe‐doped Ni2P and Ni foam substrate (Fe‐Ni2P/MoSx/NF) is reported. The obtained free‐standing catalyst performs an enhanced electrochemical activity compared with Fe‐Ni2P/NF and MoSx/NF. The Fe‐Ni2P/MoSx/NF catalyst only requires overpotentials of 246 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2 and 277 mV to reach 50 mA cm−2 for oxygen evolution reaction process with a low Tafel slope of 59.7 mV dec−1 in alkaline solution. Meanwhile, an overpotential of 112 mV is demanded to reach 10 mA cm−2 for hydrogen evolution reaction. When the Fe‐Ni2P/MoSx/NF is used as two electrodes for overall water splitting, it requires 1.61 V to attain 10 mA cm−2 with prominent durability. Abstract

Electrocatalytic water splitting is one of the most promising green solutions for large‐scale hydrogen production, which has developed rapidly in recent years. The slow reaction rate of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has become the bottleneck to improve the electrocatalytic efficiency. Herein, Fe‐doped CoF2 nanowire arrays on 3D nickel foam are prepared by two steps of hydrothermal reaction and fluorination process. The increased catalytic activity sites and accelerated charge transfer rate make the self‐supported Fe‐doped CoF2 electrode show excellent OER performance in alkaline electrolyte. An overpotential of 230 mV is only required to release a current density of 10 mA cm−2. The Tafel slope derived from the polarization curves is 59 mV dec−1, indicating outstanding electrochemical kinetics performance. A stable output current density of 84 mA cm−2 for more than 96 h is achieved under an invariant overpotential of 338 mV, attributing to the anion reconstruction making part of CoF2 transform into cobalt hydroxide and further improving its electrocatalytic performance. Abstract

To investigate the alleviated effects of Cd stress on rice roots with Pr treatment,solution culture experiments were conducted to study the effects of different Pr levels (10,20,40,60,80,100 mg/L) on root physiological characteristics of rice (Oryza sativa L.) under Cd stress.The results showed that Cd stress had significant inhibitory effects on root growth.Under Cd stress,the root dry mass,root activities,SOD,APX and CAT activities decreased by 31.6%,46.1%,23.3%,57.6% and 40.1%.However,POD activities,electrolytic leakage,MDA and proline content were significantly higher than those of control,which were 1.61,2.05,1.82,1.63 times respectively.With the treatment of 10～80 mg/L Pr,root growth was reconditioned to different degrees and the damage of Cd toxicity reduced.It proved,by the experiment,that Pr can improve root activities and proline content,reduce cell membrane permeability and MDA content,and keep the activities of SOD,APX and CAT of rice root.By contrast,the optimum concentration of Pr was 40 mg/L.However,under the treatment of 100 mg/L Pr,the toxic effect of C was aggravated.

91. Muscle-Inspired Self-Healing Hydrogels for Strain and Temperature Sensor

Abstract

Recently, self-healing hydrogel bioelectronic devices have raised enormous interest for their tissue-like mechanical compliance, desirable biocompatibility, and tunable adhesiveness on bioartificial organs. However, the practical applications of these hydrogel-based sensors are generally limited by their poor fulfillment of stretchability and sensitivity, brittleness under subzero temperature, and single sensory function. Inspired by the fiber-reinforced microstructures and mechano-transduction systems of human muscles, a self-healing (90.8%), long-lasting thermal tolerant and dual-sensory hydrogel-based sensor is proposed, with high gauge factor (18.28) within broad strain range (268.9%), low limit of detection (5% strain), satisfactory thermosensation (−0.016 °C–1), and highly discernible temperature resolution (2.7 °C). Especially by introducing a glycerol/water binary solvent system, desirable subzero-temperature self-healing performance, high water-retaining, and durable adhesion feature can be achieved, resulting from the ice crystallization inhibition and highly dynamic bonding. On account of the advantageous mechanoreception and thermosensitive capacities, a flexible touch keyboard for signature identification and a “fever indicator” for human forehead’s temperature detection can be realized by this hydrogel bioelectronic device.

93. Influence of inversion defects and Cr-Cr pairs on the photoluminescent performance of ZnAlO crystals.

Abstract

ZnAlO:Cr crystals were synthesized by using sol-gel method at 1000 °C. The results showed that with the concentration of Cr in spinel lattices increasing, the x-ray diffraction peaks shifted toward lower diffraction angles, and the grain size revealed a rapid increase and became invariable when the Cr dopant concentration was above 0.7 mol%. All the samples showed a series of emission peaks ranging from 660 to 730 nm assigned to spin-forbidden E→A transition of Cr ions in spinel lattices. The intensity of emission peaks revealed a strong dependence on the Cr concentration. An additional emission peak at 740 nm was present when the Cr ions concentration was above 0.5%. All emission peaks were quenched when the Cr concentration reaches 1.3 mol%. The results of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) suggested that the Cr ions occupied the octahedral sites in spinel lattices, and with the Cr concentration increasing, the exchange interaction and coupling interaction between Cr-Cr were enhanced and the antisite defects related to Zn in octahedral sites increased. 96. Defense Responses of Salicylic Acid in Mango Fruit Against Postharvest Anthracnose, Caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and its Possible Mechanism.

Abstract

The effects and mechanisms of salicylic acid (SA) on defense response to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides from mango fruits were investigated by in vitro and in vivo test. In vitro experiment results showed that SA significantly reduced mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides in a concentration-dependent manner. SA effectively controlled anthracnose decay on inoculated mango fruit, as well as natural infection. Disease incidence and lesion diameter in SA-treated fruit were significantly lower than those of the control fruit. SA treatment increased the activities of chitinase, β-1,3-glucanase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and polyphenoloxidase, and the content of total phenolic compounds and lignin in mango fruit. Moreover, SA treatment effectively maintained fruit firmness by suppressing conversion of insoluble protopectin into water soluble pectin. And correlation analysis showed there is a higher negative correlation between fruit firmness and disease incidence. These findings suggest that the effect of SA on postharvest diseases was attributed to its direct antimicrobial activity and the elicitation of resistant responses, as well maintaining the firmness in mango fruit. Therefore, SA treatment is a promising measure for controlling postharvest anthracnose rot in mango. Practical Applications Induction of fruit resistance against pathogenic infection with biological or chemical elicitors has been thought to be a promising approach for controlling of postharvest diseases and reducing the use of synthetic fungicides. Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is the predominant postharvest disease in mango production that causes severe postharvest losses and fruit quality deterioration. SA is a natural plant substance involved in plant defense responses to biotic stresses. The present results from in vitro and in vivo experiment suggested that SA treatment could effectively inhibit mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides, enhance resistance of mango fruit against the pathogen and reduce anthracnose rot, as well maintain fruit firmness. Abstract

Objective Bone grafts (sinus lift and/or ridge augmentation) may become an obstacle for some patients who desire implant treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the success of six- and eight-millimeters rough surface design short dental implants, for up to 2 years in function, when compared to conventional length (11 mm) implants. Materials and Methods A total of 25.6-, 20.8- and 35.11-mm length implants were placed and restored in 30 subjects (11 males, 19 females) between the age of 22 and 80, following a standard protocol. Implant mobility, crestal bone loss as well as periodontal parameters were evaluated immediately after restoration placement, at 6, 12 and 24 months. Results There was one failure of one 6-mm implant during the healing phase and one restorative failure. The median crestal bone loss at 24 months was 0.45 mm for the 6-mm implants, 0.55 mm for the 8 mm implants and 0.65 mm for the 11-mm implants. The success rate for 6-mm implants was 97% and for 8-mm and 11-mm implants 100%. Conclusions Based on this preliminary data, we conclude that rough surface design short dental implants (6 and 8 mm in length) have similar success rate when compared to 11-mm implants.
