The piedmont plain in southwestern Turkmenistan has experienced a millennia-long settlement history despite prevailing arid climates. One of the prerequisites for the various agricultural efforts was irrigation. Most of the water used for irrigation measures came from the adjacent Kopet Dag mountain chain. This situation changed with the introduction of the Karakum canal in the middle of the 20th century. The present study evaluates the rich irrigation history of the piedmont plain by investigating two small catchments that drain the eastern ranges of the Kopet Dag. Within their catchments, geomorphological and hydrological analyses were conducted. We present several Optically Stimulated Luminescence and 14-C dating results that add to the understanding of the landscape history from the Pleistocene until modern ages. Moreover, modern climatological and hydrological data were analyzed that show a remarkable drop in runoff from the Kopet Dag since the 1960s.

Op de oostelijke helft van wierde Grote Houw bij Leens is onderzoek gedaan naar de snelheid van erosieprocessen. Deze wierde bevat archeologische resten uit de vroege en volle middeleeuwen en heeft een zeer hoge archeologische waarde. Het doel van dit onderzoek dat tussen 2012 en 2014 plaatsvond, was om te onderzoeken hoe intensief de erosieprocessen zijn die deze vindplaats bedreigen. Verschillende technieken werden ingezet om de snelheid van erosie te bepalen. Ook zijn er nieuwe rekenmethodes ontwikkeld. Naast informatie over de snelheid van erosie op dit terrein, leverde het veldwerk ook nieuwe informatie op over de opbouw en ouderdom van de wierde en over de verspreiding van archeologische resten op het terrein. De Grote Houw Oost is één van de vier locaties waar in het kader van het TOPsites project onderzoek is uitgevoerd naar de snelheid van erosie. Doel van het project TOPsites is om wettelijk beschermde archeologische monumenten te beschermen tegen de effecten van sluipende degradatie.

Doel wasom te proberen vast te stellen hoe snel op dezelocatie erosie plaatsvindt. Bijkomende doelenwaren (1) om te testen welke methodes hetmeest geschikt zijn in een dergelijke context omerosiesnelheden te meten en (2) om te onderzoekenin hoeverre erosie schade toebrengt aande archeologische vindplaats.Grote Houw – een terrein van zeer hoge archeologischewaarde – bevat een deel van eencomplexe dubbelwierde. De verschillendemethodes die werden getest voor het meten vande erosiesnelheden gaven variabele resultaten:• Een vergelijking van de maaiveldhoogtesvolgens AHN1, AHN2 en een nieuwe groundbasedLIDAR opname leverde geen duidelijkbeeld op.• Met booronderzoek zijn aanwijzingen voorerosie gevonden in de vorm van variaties indiktes van de bouwvoor.• Een intensieve veldkartering leverde eenduidelijk beeld van de vondspreiding in relatietot de ligging van de wierde. Er waren echtergeen eenduidige aanwijzingen voor het recentopploegen van vondstmateriaal.• Vijf profielputten werden gegraven om debodemopbouw te bestuderen – met aandachtvoor de dikte van de bouwvoor en het evt.aanwezig zijn van colluvium.• OSL analyses (uit de profielputten) blekenvooral geschikt om erosie- en sedimentatieprocessenop langere tijdschalen teonderzoek. Daarbij was de spreiding aandateringen binnen één monster van groterbelang dan een absolute datering. Demetingen gaven een duidelijk beeld van deontstaansgeschiedenis van de wierde. Erosieof colluviumvorming was niet duidelijk aan tetonen.• Met metingen van de gehaltes aan 137Cs enplutonium in het profiel bleek het welmogelijk om schattingen van erosiesnelhedente maken over de periode van ca. 1960(detonatie van waterstofbommen in deatmosfeer) tot nu. Schatting is dat gedurendedeze 50 jaar maximaal 2 mm/jaar erosie isopgetreden.• De resultaten van 137Cs oppervlaktemetingenwaren op deze locatie niet geschikt om erosievast te stellen.

Nivellering en erosie zijn een algemeen bekendprobleem voor geaccidenteerde terreinenwaarop akkerbouw plaatsvindt. Grond zondervegetatie is gevoelig voor erosie, terwijl ploegenzorgt voor vervlakking en nivellering van reliëfverschillen.Verschillende tests zijn gedaan, metname in het buitenland, om de snelheid vandeze nivellering en erosie te karakteriseren.De resultaten zijn echter niet eenduidig, medeomdat verschillende tijdschalen wordengebruikt.Om beter grip te krijgen op de snelheid vanerosie en nivellering op archeologische vindplaatsenals gevolg van akkerbouw zijn vijflocaties uitgezocht. Met opzet is gekozen voorlocaties waarvan de verwachting is dat erosie/nivellering sterk is, zodat ze kunnen wordengezien als worst-case scenario. Binnen die groepis gekozen voor vindplaatsen waar eerderrelevante gegevens zijn verzameld overdegradatie en conservering. Twee (Beek-Kelmond en Meerssen – Onderste Herkenberg)liggen in het Limburgse lössgebied; drie andere(Schouwen, Grote Houw en Tjessens) zijnterpen/wierden. Op deze locaties wordenverschillende technieken ingezet om erosie ennivellering door de tijd in kaart te brengen.Uit het onderzoek op de vroegneolitische(Lineaire Bandkeramiek) vindplaats Kelmond-Beekerveld blijkt dat er aanwijzingen zijn voorvan significante erosie, met name op het steilstedeel van de helling. Hoewel het meestecolluvium op zijn laatst gevormd is tijdens delate middeleeuwen, zijn er duidelijke aanwijzingendat erosie actief was in de afgelopendecennia, en op dit moment ook nog plaatsvindt.De snelheid waarop de erosie plaatsvindt isaanzienlijk; in de afgelopen 50 jaar is enkeledecimeters aan grond verdwenen van de site,met name rond de hellingknik. De ouderedatering van het colluvium en de aanwezigheidvan een grote concentratie sporen op het steilstedeel van de helling zijn aanwijzingen dat dezeerosie komt na een langere periode van landschappelijkestabiliteit.De vergelijking van de maaiveldhoogtes uitverschillende jaren en de variaties daarin (metname de vergelijking tussen de twee generatiesvan het Actueel Hoogtebestand Nederland)duiden op erosie, maar deze resultaten op zichzijn niet overtuigend. De combinatie van 137Cs en239+240Pu metingen enerzijds en OSL metingenanderzijds geven wel uitkomsten die geschiktzijn voor het identificeren en kwantificeren vanerosie en colluviatie.Veel van de hier geteste methoden bleken nietgeschikt om de erosiesnelheden te meten. In demeeste gevallen waren ze te onnauwkeurig(bijvoorbeeld 137Cs oppervlaktekartering), warende effecten te onduidelijk (AHN/LIDARverschillen) of waren er oncontroleerbarevariaties in de gehaltes van bepaalde tracers.De tracers 137Cs en 239+240Pu gaven als enige welwaardes waaraan recente erosie kon wordenafgelezen. De schatting van de snelheden isgebaseerd op een aantal aannames, waardoorde schattingen vooral als indicatie moetenworden gezien. Nader onderzoek naar hetgebruik van deze isotopencombinatie zou debetrouwbaarheid van de schatting kunnenverbeteren.OSL bleek vooral geschikt om erosie en depositieop tijdschalen van (tientallen) eeuwen tebepalen. Het is daarmee een goede ondersteunendetechniek – in combinatie met tracers – omde landschappelijke ontwikkeling en erosiegevoeligheidvan een vindplaats te onderzoeken.Voor toekomstig onderzoek, waarbij hetschatten van mate van erosie van belang is, ishet aan te raden om een combinatie van 137Cs en239+240Pu als tracers en OSL als ondersteuning enlandschapsontwikkeling toe te passen. Een extravoordeel van deze combinatie is dat ze ook eenindicatie kunnen geven van de mate van bioturbatieop een vindplaats en de timing ervan.Ten aanzien van het monument zelf kunnen eenaantal aanbevelingen worden gedaan. Uit hetonderzoek blijkt dat er sprake is van stevigeerosie op delen van het terrein. Omdat veel vande sporen direct onder de bouwvoor liggen, is devindplaats zeer kwetsbaar. Eenmaal dieperploegen dan de bouwvoor brengt schade eninformatieverlies met zich mee. Een gebruik vanhet monument als grasland verdient daarom devoorkeur.

Combining field reconstruction and landscape evolution modelling can be useful to investigate the relative role of different drivers on catchment response. The Geren Catchment (~45 km2) in western Turkey is suitable for such a study, as it has been influenced by uplift, climate change and lava damming. Four Middle Pleistocene lava flows (40Ar/39Ar- dated from 310 to 175 ka) filled and dammed the Gediz River at the Gediz–Geren confluence, resulting in base-level fluctuations of the otherwise uplift-driven incising river. Field reconstruction and luminescence dating suggest fluvial terraces in the Geren Catchment are capped by Middle Pleistocene aggradational fills. This showed that incision of the Geren trunk stream has been delayed until the end of MIS 5. Subsequently, the catchment has responded to base-level lowering since MIS 4 by 30 m of stepped net incision. Field reconstruction left us with uncertainty on the main drivers of terrace formation. Therefore, we used landscape evolution modelling to investigate catchment response to three scenarios of base-level change: (i) uplift with climate change (rainfall and vegetation based on arboreal pollen); (ii) uplift, climate change and short-lived damming events; (iii) uplift, climate and long-lived damming events. Outputs were evaluated for erosion–aggradation evolution in trunk streams at two different distances from the catchment outlet. Climate influences erosion–aggradation activity in the catchment, although internal feedbacks influence timing and magnitude. Furthermore, lava damming events partly control if and where these climate-driven aggradations occur. Damming thus leaves a legacy on current landscape evolution. Catchment response to long-duration damming events corresponds best with field reconstruction and dating. The combination of climate and base level explains a significant part of the landscape evolution history of the Geren Catchment. By combining model results with fieldwork, additional conclusions on landscape evolution could be drawn.

Soil formation depends on bedrock, climate, relief, vegetation and time. Bioturbation and colluvial soil re-location are important and significant processes that affect the mechanisms and rate of bedrock weathering. The estimation of the relative fraction of bedrock grains which has been mixed in the soil and transported either vertically or laterally to different depths gives an indication of the degree to which bedrock weathering is controlled by the latter processes. However, despite the great effort dedicated to the analysis of these processes, little is known about the quantitative relationship between geomorphological changes and soil formation, especially for long timescales. This study presents reconstruction of soil processes by single grain optically stimulated luminescence techniques (OSL) in several profiles sampled along a hillslope. The OSL analyses provide a direct measurement of soil forming processes (e.g. bioturbation, colluviation) and with them a more precise formulation of soil formation models at longer timescales. Single-grain OSL techniques have been applied to quartz and feldspar minerals which were extracted from different soil horizons from a hillslope catena located in Sierra Morena, Córdoba, in the south of Spain. Four profiles were explored extracting twelve samples in order to study vertical and lateral mixing (e.g. soil creep, colluvial processes) of soils. The suitability of three different OSL single grain approaches, quartz OSL, IRSL (infrared stimulated luminescence) and pIRIR (post-IRSL) feldspar, was tested on four samples. From this analysis parameters from single-grain OSL age distributions (e.g. number of zeroed grains, scatter and shape of the distribution) were deduced to be used as indicators for bioturbation and/or soil-relocation. The most suitable approach was the applied to the several samples from hillslope catena. This study reveals the potential of OSL single-grain techniques in order to shed light on bioturbation and pedoturbation processes within soil formation and their interrelationship with geomorphological processes.

Novel single-grain luminescence measurements of quartz and feldspar grains offer exciting ways forward to characterize rates and mechanisms of soil bioturbation. However, to fulfil this potential, the attribution problem must be solved – we must know which bioturbation mechanisms can lead to the observed outcome. Inverse modelling is a well-known solution for such problems. We present a new stochastic model of the evolution of grain properties such as apparent age and intrinsic brightness of quartz and feldspar grains in a bioturbated soil column. The model can rapidly simulate the depth profiles of these grain properties due to various bioturbation mechanisms over long periods of time. These can then be compared with the observed profiles.We illustrate the inverse model process for a case study site near Cordoba in Spain, where apparent ages and intrinsic brightness were determined for single quartz grains and single feldspar grains (with a 50 degree and a 175 degree protocol). Results indicate that several hypothesized bioturbation mechanisms can indeed be excluded by inverse modelling. The model can easily be extended to include hillslope processes.

Post-infrared (pIR) stimulated luminescence dating of sedimentary feldspar largely avoids the effects of anomalous fading that affect conventional infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) dating. However, optical resetting of pIR signals is more difficult than resetting the conventional IRSL signal, which may undermine the crucial assumption that pIR signals were effectively bleached upon deposition and burial of sediment grains. In this study, we quantify the bleaching properties of several pIR signals on various samples using laboratory-simulated bleaching in full sunlight and water-attenuated sunlight. Our data show that bleaching is most efficient under full spectrum conditions for all pIR signals and that pIR signals measured at elevated temperature are increasingly harder to bleach than IR and pIR signals measured at low temperature (e.g. IR at 50°C). All bleaching curves exhibit a very slow and steady decrease, indicating that a fixed un-bleachable residual level cannot be reached within the 11 days of solar simulator exposure undertaken here. We show that the magnitude of a laboratory-determined residual dose depends on the adopted bleaching protocol and cannot be used as a proxy for the dose that remains in the sample at the time of burial (remnant dose). Our data emphasize the importance of finding a balance between sufficient signal stability and a minimized contribution of a remnant dose when using pIR procedures for feldspar luminescence dating.

Fluvial terraces play an important role for research on previous geomorphic processes as their sediments can record various sedimentation stages. In the mountains of central Taiwan, however, the formation time of sediments in the Puli Basin is still unclear. In this study, we investigate the fluvial sediments of a fluvial terrace in the Taomi River catchment in the Puli Basin in terms of sedimentology and geochronology and consider their implications for geomorphic evolution in the Puli Basin. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating shows that fine-grained and homogeneous sediment in the studied fluvial terrace was deposited at 12.3 ± 1.7 ka and 12.0 ± 2.1 ka. These dating results are consistent with the age of 14.5 ± 0.4 ka cal B.P. from the radiocarbon dating of a charcoal fragment. A third OSL age of 8.7 ± 1.4 ka suggests that the overlying fluvial gravels started to form in the early Holocene.Based on the dating results and the sedimentological and geomorphic characteristics of the fluvial terrace under study, a preliminary model of the geomorphic evolution of the Taomi River catchment is proposed: I. The fine-grained sediment had been deposited at the end of the Late Pleistocene. II. In the early Holocene, fluvial gravel deposits were formed, probably caused by a climatic shift (from dry to wet). III. Huge-scaled incision of the Taomi River took place possibly associated with rapid Holocene river incision. IV. Incision stopped, and the studied fluvial terrace was formed. Later, young fluvial terraces, as derived from the analysis of a high resolution DTM, related to episodic incision of the river were formed. The modern river channel is 20 m below the studied outcrop.

In this work a formulation for a -f DES model has been used in its DES and URANS formulation to calculate the flow over an inclining plate in order to investigate the potential of DES on moving structures. It is shown that although the model is in LES mode, the fluctuations are not developed instantaneously. As a result, the turbulent kinetic energy is underpredicted in the LES zone, compared to pure URANS. The formulation for the -f DES model has been validated for the flow over a streamwise periodic 2D hill, whereat the results are in good agreement to the available benchmark data obtained from LES.

Since the 1930s, several European zoologists have developed scenarios for glacial refuges and postglacial expansions, mainly based on studies of the morphological differentiation of populations and distribution patterns of species. For example, Holdhaus described the distribution of blind euedaphic and troglobitic beetles restricted to an area South of a well-defined line crossing the Southern Europe from West to East. In these areas, where many endemic animal and plant species occur, other species that are currently more widely distributed in Europe were probably able to survive the glacial period(s). Molecular analyses of 77 populations of the silvicolous ground beetle Carabus auronitens support the existence of these postulated refuge areas. Genetic differentiation of C. auronitens provides good evidence for multiple refuges, which are, however, situated further North than previously assumed. Furthermore, genetic differentiation is more pronounced in the areas South of the Holdhaus line than in the areas North of it.

The new grid code could be a big step towards active participation of PV-Systems in low voltage network operation. Reactive power provision by PV systems is expected to be interesting in future. This paper starts with a theoretical introduction on how reactive power can be used to influence of PV power feed-in on the voltage at its point of common coupling. For a technical and economical optimization of the most common reactive power provision methods two typical German low voltage distribution test feeders (rural and suburban network structure) with high level PV penetration have been modelled and analyzed. Here, the economic evaluation considers the perspective of the PV plant operators as well as of the distribution system operator. The results show that the highest share of the total additional operational costs arises for the PV plant operators and that there exists a big difference in the costs of the different reactive power supply approaches. Also an overview is given about the actual situation on grid codes and the certification procedures in Germany.
