Mothers with insecure attachment styles may have increased difficulty establishing secure attachment with their infant and may experience emotion regulation difficulties in the postpartum period. This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of emotion dysregulation (ED) on the relationship between maternal insecure attachment style and self‐reported attachment to infant in women admitted to a mother‐baby unit. At admission, women completed self‐report questionnaires measuring attachment style, ED, postnatal attachment and postnatal depression (PND) symptoms. Descriptive statistics, correlations, and mediation analyses (PROCESS macro) were conducted. Insecure maternal attachment style was found to predict postnatal attachment through ED. When PND symptoms were accounted for, this model was no longer significant, and instead a serial mediation found that ED predicted PND, which was in turn associated with reduced postnatal attachment quality. This study provides preliminary support for continued research into maternal ED as a predictor of adverse maternal and infant outcomes postnatally. Individuals with attachment insecurity experiencing emotion regulation difficulties may be at an increased risk of developing PND and in turn experiencing adverse mother‐infant attachment outcomes. This has clinical implications for the screening, assessment and treatment of women experiencing mental health or attachment related concerns postnatally.

Thiopurines are part of a clinical regimen used for the treatment of autoimmune disorders and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. However, despite these successes, there are also unintended consequences such as therapy-induced cancer in long-term survivors. Therefore, a better understanding of cellular responses to thiopurines will lead to improved and personalized treatment strategies. RAD51D is an important component of homologous recombination (HR), and our previous work established that mammalian cells defective for RAD51D are more sensitive to the thiopurine 6-thioguanine (6TG) and have dramatically increased numbers of multinucleated cells and chromosome instability. 6TG is capable of being incorporated into telomeres, and interestingly, RAD51D contributes to telomere maintenance, although the precise function of RAD51D at the telomeres remains unclear. We sought here to investigate: (1) the activity of RAD51D at telomeres, (2) the contribution of RAD51D to protect against 6TG-induced telomere damage, and (3) the fates of Rad51d-deficient cells following 6TG treatment. These results demonstrate that RAD51D is required for maintaining the telomeric 3' overhangs. As measured by γ-H2AX induction and foci formation, 6TG induced DNA damage in Rad51d-proficient and Rad51d-deficient cells. However, the extent of γ-H2AX telomere localization following 6TG treatment was higher in Rad51d-deficient cells than in Rad51d-proficient cells. Using live-cell imaging of 6TG-treated Rad51d-deficient cells, two predominant forms of mitotic catastrophe were found to contribute to the formation of multinucleated cells, failed division and restitution. Collectively, these findings provide a unique window into the role of the RAD51D HR protein during thiopurine induction of mitotic catastrophe. Environ. Mol. Clinical guidelines recommend that women be asked about their past or current mental health as a routine component of maternity care. The purpose of this research was two-fold: first, to examine whether access to this universal aspect of care is equitable among women who have recently given birth in Australia; second, to examine the clinical effectiveness of this prevention and early intervention approach, in terms of referral rates, service utilisation and maternal mental health and parenting outcomes. A sub-sample of women from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health (ALSWH) 1973-1978 Cohort participated in the four studies undertaken to explore these issues. Study One showed that health care provider enquiry into a woman’s current emotional state has been largely embraced during pregnancy and the postpartum in Australia, that much less is occurring in terms of more in depth examinations of maternal psychosocial health, and that there are clear disparities in access to perinatal psychosocial assessment at health-service and socio-demographic levels. Study Two demonstrated that asking women about current mental health is not only a good practice approach but does not seem to inflate referral rates, and that health professionals appropriately taking into account risk factors such as past history will initiate referrals. Subsequent analyses undertaken in Study Three showed that health professional enquiry into past or current mental health is associated with help seeking among women who experienced significant emotional distress during the perinatal period, with the impact of such enquiry on help seeking most apparent when women were also referred by their health care provider for additional support or care. Study Four demonstrated that women who are asked about their emotional health in the second postnatal year have more optimal mental health outcomes than women who are not asked about these issues. However, the most consistent predictors of mental health and parenting outcomes across the first two years postpartum were overall social support, significant stressors in the previous 12 months and delayed help seeking. These studies provide an important contribution to the debate relating to the clinical efficacy of depression ‘screening’ or psychosocial assessment during the perinatal period, and are particularly timely given recent changes in the funding structure for the National Perinatal Depression Initiative in Australia.

The Ti-Al system is a promising substitute for Ni-based aeronautical superalloys. In the composition range of interest for these applications, the solidification of these alloys begins with a ß phase (body-centered cubic structure) followed by a peritectic transition ß + L → α (hexagonal close-packed structure). As a function of Al content, the proportions of ß and α phases over the course of solidification change, and the centrifuge casting process for aeronautical turbine blade fabrication introduces other structural variations. The present work explores the influence of Al content and centrifugation on the solidification process in these alloys. Remelting experiments in a cold-crucible induction furnace, directional solidification experiments in a large-diameter centrifuge and centrifuge casting experiments are presented and characterized. Potential mechanisms for the observed structural differences are proposed. Fragmentation assisted by a higher Al content is observed in cold crucible casting, and an early onset of the peritectic reaction is associated with fragmentation that more effectively provokes a columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET). Competition between convection and sedimentation is observed in directional solidification under centrifugation, and secondary arm remelting is responsible for CET. In centrifuge casting, heterogeneous “seagull wing” structures for low Al contents depend on cooling rates and convection. A different behavior under the same conditions is noted for higher Al contents, and the transition seems to coincide with the peritectic, Le système Ti-Al est prometteur pour la substitution aux superalliages base-Ni aéronautiques. Une compétition entre la convection et la sédimentation est observée lors des essais de solidification dirigée sous centrifugation, et la refusion des bras secondaires est responsable de la TCE.
