A femtosecond pump-study of the primary events of nitrosyl chloride (CINO) photochemistry in solution is presented. Following 266 nm photolysis, the resulting evolution in optical density is measured for CINO dissolved in acetonitrile, chloroform, and dichloromethane.

Abstract

A novel approach is developed to simultaneously achieve high first-order hyperpolarizability [beta] values while providing an adjustable dipole moment by linking a strong neutral-ground-state (NGS) nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore with positive [beta] to a zwitterionic (ZWI) chromophore with negative [beta] in an antiparallel fashion. The results have shown that an antiparallel-aligned NGS chromophore and a zwitterionic chromophore can simultaneously achieve an increase in [beta] and a decrease of the dipole moment.

Abstract

A series of nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores incorporating the ferrocenyl (F) group as an electron donor and 2-dicyanomethylene-3-cyano-4-methyl 1-2,5-dihydrofuran (TCF) derivatives as electron acceptors is discussed. The excellent agreement between the theoretical and experimental beta values demonstrates that a linear relation exists between the hyperpolarizability and the bond length alteration.

A study was conducted to describe the first examination of the early-time photo dissociation dynamics of isopropyl nitrate (IPN) in the condensed phase using absolute resonance Raman intensity analysis (RRIA). Comparison of the results in cyclohexane and acetonitrile revealed that the excited-state structural evolution was solvent dependent.

Abstract

The photochemical reaction dynamics of chlorine dioxide were investigated. The results of absorption and resonance Raman spectroscopy showed significant scattering intensity for the symmetric stretch, bend, and asymmetric stretch. This indicates that structural evolution occurs along all three normal coordinates upon photoexcitation. The measured measured absorption and resonance Raman intensities were compared to the intensities predicted using both empirical and ab initio calculations.

Abstract

A detailed study was conducted relating to research on solvated electrons as model systems for probing condensed-phase structure and ultrafast molecular dynamics. The experiment examined the three-pulse pump-probe spectroscopy of the solvated electron in methanol/ethanol solvents as a function of probe wavelength in the visible and near-IR as a function of pump intensity. The data provides new insights into the validity of the models proposed in the study for the dynamics of the electron in alcohols.

Frontiers in Marine Science, 6, (2019): 429, doi:10.3389/fmars.2019.00429., There is a growing need for operational oceanographic predictions in both the Arctic and Antarctic polar regions. In the former, this is driven by a declining ice cover accompanied by an increase in maritime traffic and exploitation of marine resources. Oceanographic predictions in the Antarctic are also important, both to support Antarctic operations and also to help elucidate processes governing sea ice and ice shelf stability. However, a significant gap exists in the ocean observing system in polar regions, compared to most areas of the global ocean, hindering the reliability of ocean and sea ice forecasts. This gap can also be seen from the spread in ocean and sea ice reanalyses for polar regions which provide an estimate of their uncertainty. The reduced reliability of polar predictions may affect the quality of various applications including search and rescue, coupling with numerical weather and seasonal predictions, historical reconstructions (reanalysis), aquaculture and environmental management including environmental emergency response. Here, we outline the status of existing near-real time ocean observational efforts in polar regions, discuss gaps, and explore perspectives for the future. Specific recommendations include a renewed call for open access to data, especially real-time data, as a critical capability for improved sea ice and weather forecasting and other environmental prediction needs. Dedicated efforts are also needed to make use of additional observations made as part of the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP; 2017–2019) to inform optimal observing system design. To provide a polar extension to the Argo network, it is recommended that a network of ice-borne sea ice and upper-ocean observing buoys be deployed and supported operationally in ice-covered areas together with autonomous profiling floats and gliders (potentially with ice detection capability) in seasonally ice covered seas. Finally, additional efforts to better measure and parameterize, The development of the new generation of floats (PRO-ICE) to be operated under ice was funded by the French project NAOS. Twelve PRO-ICE were funded by NAOS and nine by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (FCI-30124). Abstract

Picosecond, time-resolved UV stokes and anti-stokes resonance Raman spcetroscopy were used to establish the photoproduct development, conformational kinetics and vibrational relaxation kinetics in the photochemical ring-openings of 1,3-cyclohexadiene (CHD) and alpha-phellandrene (alpha-PHE), and experiments were conducted on the transformation of alpha-PHE to 3,7-dimethyl-1,3,5-octatriene (OT) and of CHD to cis-hexatriene (c-HT). The photoproduct anti-stokes ethylenic intensity in both reactions decays in nine plus or minus two ps, and has a time constant of eight plus or minus two ps, suggesting that the intermolucular vibrational relaxation kinetics and the emergence of the photoproduct are not significantly influenced by the existence of alkyl substituents.
