Complete characterization of metabolites is essential to advance a compound in preclinical drug discovery research. Identifying metabolites formed in small quantities helps to fix metabolic soft and hot spots in the molecule. Metabolites with toxic properties formed in two percent with respect to parent drug can exhibit significant pharmacological effect. Hence using mass spec functions such as neutral loss scan, precursor ion scan, enhanced mass scan and enhanced product ion scans play an important role in characterizing metabolic profile of a drug.
