Abstract

This paper aims to investigate how to improve the effectiveness and quality of high-level education course practices based on novel strategy and information technologies. We observe and discuss several important properties of course practices for undergraduates of engineering disciplines such as inheritance, continuation, dependency, integration, etc. These properties, together with the several success cases in information area such as open source and crowd engineering, inspires us to innovate the way that the course practices to be performed. We propose that the course practices in high-level education should be opened, reused and shared across time, space and object. Such way is helpful to facilitate the course practices to be performed in an effective way and obtain higher quality. We have developed a software platform PracStore that enables undergraduates to browse, query, publish, reuse, and manage large scale course practice resources, interact and share their practice experiences of both success and failure.

Abstract

Nowadays, the structure of the passive optical networks is evolving, to keep the network survivability, the powering of some elements in this kind of networks is a key issue. In this work we propose the recycling of the Raman pump remaining optical power at the receiver to be converted to electrical power. With a 24 dBm optical pump signal a 8 dB on/off gain over 25 km of single mode optical fiber was achieved. Abstract

We prove that the model with physical and human capital adjustment costs has optimal solution when the production function is increasing return and the structure of vetor fields of the model changes substantially when the prodution function from decreasing return turns to increasing return. And it is shown that the economy is improved when the coefficients of adjustment costs become small.

Abstract

In order to analyze the thermal characteristics of the cavity facet of a semiconductor laser, a home-built near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) is employed to probe the topography of the facet. By comparing the topographic images of two samples under different DC current injections, we can find that the thermal characteristic is related to its lifetime. We show that it is possible to predict the lifetime of the semiconductor laser diode with non-destructive tests.

Abstract

Using a photonic crystal fiber with a zero dispersion wavelength of the fundamental mode at 780 nm designed and fabricated in our lab, the ultraviolet and mid-infrared continua are generated by cross-phase modulation between red-shift solitons and blue-shift dispersive waves. The dependences of continuum on the pump power and wavelength are investigated. With the pump working at 820 nm, when the pump power increases from 300 to 500 mW, the bandwidths of ultraviolet and mid-infrared continua change from 80 to 140 nm and 100 to 200 nm, respectively. The wavelength of ultraviolet continuum is below 246 nm, and the wavelength of mid-infrared continuum exceeds 2500 nm. Moreover, the influences of pump power on wavelength and conversion efficiency of different parts of continua are also demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A new scheme to generate a 60-GHz millimetre (mm) wave by tripling the frequency of the 20-GHz DSB optical mm wave is proposed. According to our analysis and numerical simulation of transmission along a fibre, this scheme can not only eliminate code form distortion, but also reduces the influence of fading effect as it transmits along the fibre. Abstract

Gain and Noise figure (NF) characteristics in dual-pump parametric amplifier based on silicon on insulator (SOI) Rib waveguides are numerically investigated in the presence of nonlinear losses. The impact of structure parameters of the silicon optical parametric amplifiers (SOPAs) on the gain and the NF are also analyzed. The results show that both the height and the width of the silicon on insulator (SOI) can affect the gain and the NF of SOPAs. 354nm bandwidth (3dB) and 8.135 maximum gain can be achieved by tailoring the structure parameters of the SOI rib waveguides. Abstract

Broadband supercontinuums (SC) are generated by soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) of hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) in our laboratory. With the pump works at 810nm when the pump power increase from 400 to 600mW, the Raman Soliton shifts from 2089 to 2215nm, the bandwidth of SC increases from 2213 to 2320nm. The ultra-violet part of SC is below 180nm, and the mid-infrared part of SC exceeds 2500nm. Moreover, the influence of pump power on SC is also analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Aim: To study the effect of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) in a rat model., Methods: Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were administered an intraperitoneal injection of saline containing 20% L-Arg (250 mg/100 g) hourly for over 2 h to induce SAP. The rats were treated with DL-propargylglycine (PAG, 50 mg/kg) or different dosages of NaHS (5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg or 100 mg/kg). PAG or NaHS was administered 1 h before induction of pancreatitis. Rats were sacrificed 24 h after the last L-Arg injection. Blood and pancreas tissues were collected., Results: The H2S and cystathionine-γ-lyase mRNA levels in SAP rats were significantly lower than those in the control group, and treatment with PAG further reduced the H2S level. Nevertheless, H2S was significantly increased after NaHS administration compared with the SAP group, and the degree of upregulation was associated with the NaHS dosage. NaHS reduced the levels of plasma amylase, interleukin-6 and myeloperoxidase in pancreatic tissue. NaHS suppressed the degradation of IκBα and the activity of nuclear factor-κB, as well as the phosphorylation of PI3K/AKT., Conclusion: H2S plays an anti-inflammatory role in SAP in vivo.
