A total of 186 native Eskimos were administered the Circular Pencil Mazes in three remote villages in Alaska. Performance on the test was evaluated with respect to age, education, sex, emotional adjustment, occupational level, political leadership, and social leadership. Results of the study lend construct validity to the hypothesis that maze performance is a measure of intellectual functioning for this population. The mean standard score for this unique population was also close to the norm established for American adults (48.39 vs. 50.00), suggesting that this test may also be a relatively effective non- cultural measure of intelligence. To test whether students' knowledge about psychology undergoes a conceptual change when learning about the discipline, 227 Introductory Psychology students from six different classes were given the Psychology as a Science (PAS) Scale in one of two conditions. Students were randomly assigned to complete the questionnaire from their own (Self Condition) or their psychology professor's (Professor Condition) perspective. As predicted, results show scores on the PAS Scale were higher, reflecting greater appreciation for psychology as a science, in the Psychology Professor than the Self condition. These results suggest that learning psychology may be less about 'reflecting on and revising' misconceptions and more about 'sorting out' which beliefs are associated with scientific psychology and which with students' own intuitive understanding of the discipline. Babywearing is the practice of carrying an infant in a baby carrier, which may provide an inexpensive, nonpharmacological intervention for the parent-infant dyads to handle mental stressors, such as pain and anxiety, especially among vulnerable infants. This study investigated the influence of babywearing on parent-infant autonomic coregulation based on the changes in the HR of mother-infant and father-infant dyads for infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Guided by the Calming Cycle Theory as the framework, the correlation between parent HR and infant HR and the difference in the mother-infant dyad (n = 17) compared to the father-infant dyad (n = 8) were examined. Although only the mother-infant HRs reached statistical significance during babywearing (r̅ =.52, p = .03), both parent-infant dyads had strong correlations during babywearing (compared to pre- and post-babywearing conditions), indicating that babywearing, for parents and their infants with NAS, may influence autonomic coregulation., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. This study examined the use of teasing during observed videotaped interactions of Mexican American adolescent dating couples ( N  = 34; 15-17 years old) from an urban area of the Southwest United States. During the interaction task, couples discussed two relationship problems for 14 min and nearly all interactions (88.2%) contained teasing. In turn, we developed a grounded theory of teasing that delineated who initiated the teasing (boys/girls), teasing types, levels of severity of teasing incidents, youth's motivations for teasing, and the resulting consequences of teasing in real time. We found that most teasing incidents were mild to moderately severe and that girls initiated teasing to a greater extent than boys. Regarding motives, youth used teasing to exert power during the interaction and/or to repair a problem in the relationship. Despite various types of teasing, the resulting consequences were hurt feelings, power struggles, and shame. Participants overtly stated that they desired improved communication. Introduction: Comorbidities are common among older people, and during the last decade, a strong association between heart failure (HF) and cognitive impairment has been found. As much as 40-50% of individuals with HF will also have some degree of cognitive impairment. Previous studies report an undertreatment for some cardiovascular diseases in patients with major neurocognitive disorder (NCD)., Objective: The aim of this present study was to explore differences in pharmacological treatment of HF in individuals diagnosed with HF with or without comorbidity of major NCD., Methods: This study combined data from three different Swedish national registers: the Swedish National Patient Register, the Swedish registry for cognitive/dementia disorders (SveDem), and the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register. A logistic regression model including variables for age, sex, major NCD, and nursing home residency was used to analyze associations between drug use and major NCD., Results: We found a lower prevalence of filled prescriptions of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors, β-blockers (BBs), and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) among patients with major NCD. Living in a nursing home was associated with lower prevalence of RAS inhibitors, BBs, digitalis glycosides, and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Females were found to have higher odds of using BBs, loop diuretics and digitalis glycosides, and lower odds of using RAS inhibitors and SGLT2 inhibitors than males., Conclusion: Our findings indicate that there is possible undertreatment among individuals with HF identified in specialized care with co-occurring major NCD. Major NCD was associated with less filled prescriptions of basal pharmacological treatments such as RAS inhibitors, BBs, and MRAs. Some conceptualizations of attachment imply an instinctual behavior that occurs naturally. Mothers who endorse this view are at greater risk for psychological stress, depression, and harsh parenting styles if they do not feel an immediate bond with their infant postpartum. The purpose of this study is to explore actual experiences of attachment from the perspective of young mothers (N = 75, M age  = 19.45 years) and based on these findings the extent to which there is empirical support for a maternal instinct. Mothers were interviewed at home three times (2 weeks, four months, and seven months postpartum), and interviews were thematically analyzed using an open coding method. Three broad themes and six sub-themes emerged: 1) experiences with the immediacy of attachment at birth are diverse (traumatic birth experience, sense of a maternal identity), 2) contextual factors on the bonding experience (physical touch-based caretaking, parenting stress and depression), and 3) time spent parenting influences attachment (reciprocity, parental confidence/knowledge). In conclusion, we could not find empirical evidence to support an innate maternal instinct. Despite diverse experiences with felt attachment at birth, all mothers perceived that the mother-infant connection was influenced by contextual factors after birth and was strengthened over time with more care-taking experience. This suggests that mothers likely developed a "maternal instinct" through repetitive interaction with their infant as the primary caretaker rather than a genetic predisposition to be superior nurturing parents., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Social touch through infant holding, skin-to-skin contact, and infant carrying (babywearing) decreases infant distress and promotes secure attachment. Unknown is the extent to which these effects are the result of the activation of C-Tactile afferents (CTs), the constellation of nerve fibers associated with affective touch, primarily located in the head and trunk of the body. The purpose of the present study was to compare dynamic touch (CTs activated) to static touch (CTs less activated) during a babywearing procedure among infants experiencing Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS). NOWS is a spectrum of clinical symptoms, including elevated heart rate (HR), associated with withdrawal from intrauterine opioid exposure. We hypothesized that stroking an infant's head during babywearing would amplify the pleasurable effect of babywearing as measured by changes in infant HR. Twenty-nine infants in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in the Southwestern USA were worn in an infant carrier starting at five days old (M = 5.4, SD = 2.6; 46.2 % White, 26.9 % Latinx, 11.5 % Native American) and physiological readings were conducted daily; heart rates of infants and caregivers were taken every 15-seconds for 5-minutes, before, during, and after babywearing (30 min per phase). Each day infants alternated (randomly) in a static touch (hands-free babywearing) or dynamic touch condition (stroking the top of the infants' head at a velocity of 3 cm/s while babywearing). On average, infants completed 3 dynamic and 3 static babywearing sessions. Hospital and research staff participated in babywearing when a parent was not available (31.0 % of infants were exclusively worn by volunteers, 27.6 % were exclusively worn by parents). We analyzed the data using Hierarchical Linear Models due to the 3-level nested design (N = 29 infants, N = 191 readings, N = 11,974 heart rates). Compared to baseline (infant calm/asleep and without contact), infant's HRs significantly declined during and after babywearing, controlling for pharmacological treatment. These effects were significantly stronger during the dynamic touch condition (reduction in HR of 11.17 bpm) compared to the static touch condition (reduction in HR of 3.74 bpm). These effects did not significantly vary by wearer (mother, father, volunteer). However, differences between the dynamic and static conditions were significantly stronger in earlier babywearing sessions, potentially indicating a learning effect. There was evidence for a calming effect among caregivers as well, particularly in the dynamic touch condition, when caregivers were engaged in active touch. Introduction: It is necessary to re-imagine nursing curriculums utilizing a postmodern approach, as outdated teacher-centred methods of nursing education with emphasis on memorization versus critical thinking no longer meet the needs of the contemporary learner and the current challenges of the healthcare environment. There is an explicit need to redesign nursing curriculums that are future-oriented, adaptive and flexible and serve the learners' best interests., Background: Distilled from a decade of teaching experience in an undergraduate, second-degree entry, accelerated nursing program, this paper describes the construction of a learner-centred, postmodern, concept-based nursing curriculum that aims to foster learners' inquiry skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, and experiential learning-all which develop learners' autonomy, self-direction, and lifelong learning. The objective is to foster learners' transformational and emancipatory learning and metacognition., Discussion: An extensive review of the current trends, contemporary nursing knowledge for the past decade (2013-2023), and seminal literature on theories and frameworks paralleled with the review of current and future trends in Canadian and global health care, including the socio-economic, politico and environmental contexts, led to the formulation of a concept-based curriculum. Grounded in the constructivist paradigm, the curriculum applies interperetivist, critical, feminist, and indigenous lenses. The Strength-Based Nursing framework was selected as the core guiding framework. The curriculum's four curricular themes and foundational pillars were adopted directly from the framework to provide a starting point for concept development. These initial themes were then juxtaposed with relevant nursing, and social theories, policies, and frameworks, ensuring a robust coverage of modern nursing knowledge and allowing for the core concepts of the curriculum to emerge. A total of 21 concepts and 192 sub-concepts were developed., Conclusion: Implications for future practice require nursing educators to receive support and professional development opportunities in developing skills and confidence in entering a classroom as co-learners and facilitators., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Objectives: Chronic pain is highly prevalent in nursing home residents and often occurs with depression as well as cognitive impairment, which can severely influence and limit the expression of pain., Methods: The present cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the prevalence of pain, depressive mood, and cognitive impairment in association with pharmacological treatment against pain and depressive symptoms among Swedish nursing home residents., Results: We found an overall pain prevalence of 52.8%, a prevalence of 63.1% for being in a depressive mood, and a prevalence of cognitive impairment of 68.3%. Among individuals assessed to have depressive mood, 60.5% were also assessed to have pain. The prevalence of pharmacological treatment for pain was 77.5 and 54.1% for antidepressants. Prescription of pharmacological treatment against pain was associated with reports of currently having pain, and paracetamol was the most prescribed drug. A higher cognitive function was associated with more filled prescriptions of drugs for neuropathic pain, paracetamol, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which could indicate an undertreatment of pain in those cognitively impaired., Conclusion: It is important to further explore the relationship between pain, depressive mood, and cognitive impairment in regard to pain management in nursing home residents., (© 2024 the author(s), published by De Gruyter.)

Objectives: While pregnancy presents a strong motivation to seek and comply with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) treatment, the risk for relapse during the postpartum period is high. The purpose of the present study was to examine the impact of babywearing while admitted to the NICU on urges to use substances within 9 months of childbirth., Methods: Mothers with a history of OUD ( N  = 47, M age = 28.91, SD  = 5.14; 48.9% White, 19.1% Latinx) and their newborns were randomly assigned to the intervention (babywearing) or control (infant rocker) condition while admitted to a NICU. Interviews occurred every 3-months. Participants reported their strong desire or urge to use substances since the last interview. Approximately 68.1% had urges within 9 months. At 3 months, participants were categorized as: never babywore (0 h, N  = 18), some babywearing (1-44 h, N  = 13), consistent babywearing (45+ hours, i.e., minimum of 3.5 h per week, N  = 16)., Results: Condition X 2 (2, N  = 47)=12.55, p  < 0.001, Phi  = 0.52 and babywearing category, X 2 (2, N  = 47)=6.75, p  = 0.034, Phi  = 0.38 significantly predicted urges to use. Mothers in the intervention condition were more likely to report no urges to use: 56.5% had no urges (43.5% had urges) compared to 8.3% of control mothers (91.7% had urges). Mothers who consistently babywore had significantly fewer urges to use (43.8% had urges) compared to mothers who never babywore (83.3% had urges)., Conclusions for Practice: There is a critical window to capitalize on mothers' desire to abstain from substance use. Babywearing, and specifically babywearing at least 30 min a day, reduced urges to use substances post-partum, a factor associated with relapse.

This computational study investigates the adsorption of various spiropyran and merocyanine isomers on a NaCl substrate using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and molecular mechanics (MM) calculations. Four different charge methods were used to determine the partial atomic charges for the adsorbate molecules, including Mulliken population analysis and three electrostatic potential (ESP) methods (Merz-Kollman, ChelpG, and Hu-Lu-Yang), while three different force fields (AMBER 3, CHARMM 27, and MM+) were employed for the MM calculations. The results show that the various DFT charge methods produced similar outcomes for the molecules' partial atomic charges, with some exceptions for individual atoms and methods. Additionally, it was found that the ESP charge methods were more sensitive to the conformer orientation than the Mulliken approach. The adsorption behavior of merocyanine conformers with the central bond in trans orientation (T-conformers) was similar for various configurations, with the molecule adsorbing mostly flat with its aromatic rings almost parallel to the substrate. However, C-conformers (with their central bond in cis orientation) and spiropyran isomers exhibited inconsistent adsorption behavior, mostly because only some of the aromatic rings contributed to the adsorption behavior. Due to additional van der Waals interactions of more aromatic rings, the adsorption energies for T-conformers are consistently 0.2-0.3 eV higher than for C-conformers and for spiropyran. The study found that the adsorption geometries and energies of stable T-conformers were independent of the partial atomic charge scheme and force field used, and C-conformers show parameter-dependent behavior upon adsorption, leading to metastable configurations. These findings indicate viable pathways during the spiropyran-merocyanine isomerization reactions. Vaccinating patients receiving dialysis may prevent morbidity and mortality in this vulnerable population. The National Forum of End-Stage Renal Disease Networks (the Forum) published a revised vaccination toolkit in 2021 to update evidence and recommendations on vaccination for patients receiving dialysis. Significant changes in the last 10 years include more data supporting the use of a high-dose influenza vaccine, the introduction of the Heplisav-B vaccine for hepatitis B, and changes in pneumococcal vaccines, including the approval of the PCV15 and PCV20 to replace the PCV13 and PPSV23 vaccines. Additional key items include the introduction of vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and a new vaccine to prevent respiratory syncytial virus disease. Historically, influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations were routinely administered by dialysis facilities, and because of possible risks of hematogenous spread of hepatitis B, dialysis providers often have detailed hepatitis B vaccine protocols. In March 2021, COVID-19 vaccines were made available for dialysis facilities to administer, although with the end of the public health emergency, vaccine policies by dialysis facilities against COVID-19 remains uncertain. The respiratory syncytial virus vaccine was authorized in 2023, and how dialysis facilities will approach this vaccine also remains uncertain.
